Chapter Eight · The Body of Śabda-Brahman · Verses 1–53

Brahmā continues: he and Viṣṇu, humbled before the fire-liṅga, behold it resolve into the syllable Om — a, u, m — and then into a form of pure, undivided brahman; a sage appears, through whom Viṣṇu recognises Mahādeva, the śabda-brahman body, in it. The bīja/yoni symbolism of a-u-m is expounded — Brahmā as seed, Viṣṇu as womb, Śiva as seed-holder and sound itself — and the golden cosmic egg arises from it, splitting after a thousand years into heaven and earth, with four-faced Brahmā born from it. The two praise Maheśvara with mantras born of his śakti, and Maheśa, pleased, then shows them his own śabdamaya form, every letter of the alphabet mapped in turn to a limb of his body, before revealing the great mantras — mṛtyuñjaya, pañcākṣara, cintāmaṇi, dakṣiṇāmūrti, tattvamasi, gāyatrī and others — which Viṣṇu takes up and repeats, and with which the two praise Śiva once more.
