इत्यज्ञानपरा सा च (ityajñānaparā sā ca) — thus, given over to ignorance, shethus, given over to ignorance, she·दर्शनार्थ शिवस्य च (darśanārtha śivasya ca) — for the sake of seeing Śivafor the sake of seeing Śiva·त्वया मुने समं सद्यः (tvayā mune samaṃ sadyaḥ) — together with you, O sage, at oncetogether with you, O sage, at once·चन्द्रशालां समागता (candraśālāṃ samāgatā) — came up to the moonlit terrace [balcony]came up to the moonlit terrace [balcony]

मदाज्ञया युवां तातौ (madājñayā yuvāṃ tātau) — by my command, you two, O dear onesby my command, you two, O dear ones·सदेवौ च पृथक्पृथक् (sadevau ca pṛthakpṛthak) — together with the gods, each separatelytogether with the gods, each separately·गच्छतं हि गिरिद्वारं (gacchataṃ hi giridvāraṃ) — go indeed to the mountain-lord's gatego indeed to the mountain-lord's gate·वयं पश्चाद् व्रजेमहि (vayaṃ paścād vrajemahi) — we shall go afterwardwe shall go afterward

इत्याकर्ण्य हरिः सर्वान् (ityākarṇya hariḥ sarvān) — having heard this, Hari, [summoning] allhaving heard this, Hari, [summoning] all·आहूयोवाच तन्मयाः (āhūyovāca tanmayāḥ) — called them and spoke, absorbed in that [command]called them and spoke, absorbed in that [command]·सुराः सर्वे तथैवाशु (surāḥ sarve tathaivāśu) — all the gods, likewise, at onceall the gods, likewise, at once·गमनं चक्रुरुत्सुकाः (gamanaṃ cakrurutsukāḥ) — eager, set out on their wayeager, set out on their way

स्थितां शिरोगृहे मेनां (sthitāṃ śirogṛhe menāṃ) — Menā, standing on the roof-terraceMenā, standing on the roof-terrace·मुने विश्वेश्वरस्त्वया (mune viśveśvarastvayā) — O sage, by you — the lord of the universe [acting through you]O sage, by you — the lord of the universe [acting through you]·तथैव दर्शयामास (tathaiva darśayāmāsa) — was shown [that vision] in such a waywas shown [that vision] in such a way·हृद्विभ्रंशो यथा भवेत् (hṛdvibhraṃśo yathā bhavet) — that her heart should be shatteredthat her heart should be shattered

प्रथमं चैव गन्धर्वाः (prathamaṃ caiva gandharvāḥ) — first of all, the Gandharvasfirst of all, the Gandharvas·सुन्दराः सुभगास्तदा (sundarāḥ subhagāstadā) — beautiful and comely, thenbeautiful and comely, then·आयाताः शुभवस्त्राढ्या (āyātāḥ śubhavastrāḍhyā) — came, rich in fine garmentscame, rich in fine garments·नानालंकारभूषिताः (nānālaṃkārabhūṣitāḥ) — adorned with manifold ornamentsadorned with manifold ornaments

नानावाहनसंयुक्ता (nānāvāhanasaṃyuktā) — furnished with manifold vehiclesfurnished with manifold vehicles·नानावाद्यपरायणाः (nānāvādyaparāyaṇāḥ) — intent upon manifold musical instrumentsintent upon manifold musical instruments·पताकाभिर्विचित्राभिः (patākābhirvicitrābhiḥ) — with wondrous, colourful bannerswith wondrous, colourful banners·अप्सरोगणसंयुताः (apsarogaṇasaṃyutāḥ) — and accompanied by hosts of Apsarasesand accompanied by hosts of Apsarases

अथ दृष्ट्वा वसुं तत्र (atha dṛṣṭvā vasuṃ tatra) — then, beholding there Vasu [the Vasus' chief]then, beholding there Vasu [the Vasus' chief]·तत्पतिं परमप्रभुम् (tatpatiṃ paramaprabhum) — their lord, of surpassing majestytheir lord, of surpassing majesty·मेना प्रहर्षिता ह्यासीत् (menā praharṣitā hyāsīt) — Menā indeed became greatly delightedMenā indeed became greatly delighted·शिवोऽयमिति चाब्रवीत् (śivo'yamiti cābravīt) — and she said, "This is Śiva"and she said, "This is Śiva"

शिवस्य गणका एते (śivasya gaṇakā ete) — "these are Śiva's attendants"these are Śiva's attendants·न शिवोऽयं शिवापतिः (na śivo'yaṃ śivāpatiḥ) — this is not Śiva, the husband of Śivā [Pārvatī]"this is not Śiva, the husband of Śivā [Pārvatī]"·इत्येवं त्वं ततस्तां वै (ityevaṃ tvaṃ tatastāṃ vai) — thus, then, indeed, you to herthus, then, indeed, you to her·अवोच ऋषिसत्तम (avoca ṛṣisattama) — spoke, O best of sagesspoke, O best of sages

एवं श्रुत्वा तदा मेना (evaṃ śrutvā tadā menā) — hearing this, Menā thenhearing this, Menā then·विचारे तत्पराभवत् (vicāre tatparābhavat) — became absorbed in reflectionbecame absorbed in reflection·इतश्चाभ्यधिको यो वै (itaścābhyadhiko yo vai) — [thinking] "he indeed who is greater than this one[thinking] "he indeed who is greater than this one·स च कीदृग्भविष्यति (sa ca kīdṛgbhaviṣyati) — what, then, will he be like?"what, then, will he be like?"

तत्पतिं च मणिग्रीवं (tatpatiṃ ca maṇigrīvaṃ) — and their lord, Maṇigrīvaand their lord, Maṇigrīva·दृष्ट्वा शोभान्वितं हि सा (dṛṣṭvā śobhānvitaṃ hi sā) — having seen him, endowed with splendour, she indeedhaving seen him, endowed with splendour, she indeed·अयं रुद्रः शिवास्वामी (ayaṃ rudraḥ śivāsvāmī) — [said] "this is Rudra, the lord of Śivā"[said] "this is Rudra, the lord of Śivā"·मेना प्राहेति हर्षिता (menā prāheti harṣitā) — Menā said, being delightedMenā said, being delighted

नायं रुद्रः शिवास्वामी (nāyaṃ rudraḥ śivāsvāmī) — "this is not Rudra, the lord of Śivā"this is not Rudra, the lord of Śivā·सेवकोऽयं शिवस्य वै (sevako'yaṃ śivasya vai) — he is indeed a servant of Śiva"he is indeed a servant of Śiva"·इत्यवोचोऽगपत्न्यै त्वं (ityavoco'gapatnyai tvaṃ) — thus you spoke to the mountain's wife [Menā]thus you spoke to the mountain's wife [Menā]·तावद्वह्निः स आगतः (tāvadvahniḥ sa āgataḥ) — then Vahni [Agni] arrivedthen Vahni [Agni] arrived

ततोऽपि द्विगुणां शोभां (tato'pi dviguṇāṃ śobhāṃ) — his splendour, doubled beyond that [again]his splendour, doubled beyond that [again]·दृष्ट्वा तस्य च साब्रवीत् (dṛṣṭvā tasya ca sābravīt) — having seen it, she then saidhaving seen it, she then said·रुद्रोऽयं गिरिजास्वामी (rudro'yaṃ girijāsvāmī) — "is this Rudra, the lord of Girijā?""is this Rudra, the lord of Girijā?"·तदा नेति त्वमब्रवीः (tadā neti tvamabravīḥ) — then you said, "No"then you said, "No"

तावद्यमः समायातः (tāvadyamaḥ samāyātaḥ) — then Yama arrivedthen Yama arrived·ततोऽपि द्विगुणप्रभः (tato'pi dviguṇaprabhaḥ) — of splendour doubled beyond thatof splendour doubled beyond that·तं दृष्ट्वा प्राह सा मेना (taṃ dṛṣṭvā prāha sā menā) — seeing him, that Menā saidseeing him, that Menā said·रुद्रोऽयमिति हर्षिता (rudro'yamiti harṣitā) — "this is Rudra," being delighted"this is Rudra," being delighted

नेति त्वमब्रवीस्तां वै (neti tvamabravīstāṃ vai) — you indeed said to her, "No"you indeed said to her, "No"·तावन्निर्ऋतिरागतः (tāvannirṛtirāgataḥ) — then Nirṛti arrivedthen Nirṛti arrived·बिभ्राणो द्विगुणां शोभां (bibhrāṇo dviguṇāṃ śobhāṃ) — bearing a doubled splendourbearing a doubled splendour·शुभः पुण्यजनप्रभुः (śubhaḥ puṇyajanaprabhuḥ) — the auspicious lord of the Puṇyajanas [Rākṣasas]the auspicious lord of the Puṇyajanas [Rākṣasas]

तं दृष्ट्वा प्राह सा मेना (taṃ dṛṣṭvā prāha sā menā) — seeing him, that Menā saidseeing him, that Menā said·रुद्रोऽयमिति हर्षिता (rudro'yamiti harṣitā) — "this is Rudra," being delighted"this is Rudra," being delighted·नेति त्वमब्रवीस्तां वै (neti tvamabravīstāṃ vai) — you indeed said to her, "No"you indeed said to her, "No"·तावद्वरुण आगतः (tāvadvaruṇa āgataḥ) — then Varuṇa arrivedthen Varuṇa arrived

नेति त्वमब्रवीस्तां वै (neti tvamabravīstāṃ vai) — you indeed said to her, "No"you indeed said to her, "No"·तावद्धनद आगतः (tāvaddhanada āgataḥ) — then Dhanada [Kubera] arrivedthen Dhanada [Kubera] arrived·ततोऽपि द्विगुणां शोभां (tato'pi dviguṇāṃ śobhāṃ) — a splendour doubled beyond thata splendour doubled beyond that·बिभ्राणो गुह्यकाधिपः (bibhrāṇo guhyakādhipaḥ) — bearing it, the lord of the Guhyakasbearing it, the lord of the Guhyakas

तावदिन्द्रः समायातः (tāvadindraḥ samāyātaḥ) — then Indra arrivedthen Indra arrived·ततोऽपि द्विगुणप्रभः (tato'pi dviguṇaprabhaḥ) — of splendour doubled beyond thatof splendour doubled beyond that·सर्वामरवरो (sarvāmaravaro) — the finest of all the immortalsthe finest of all the immortals·नानादिव्यभास्त्रिदिवेश्वरः (nānādivyabhāstridiveśvaraḥ) — of manifold divine radiance, the lord of the third heavenof manifold divine radiance, the lord of the third heaven

तं दृष्ट्वा शंकरः सोऽयम् (taṃ dṛṣṭvā śaṃkaraḥ so'yam) — seeing him, [she said] "this is Śaṅkara"seeing him, [she said] "this is Śaṅkara"·इति सा प्राह मेनका (iti sā prāha menakā) — thus that Menakā saidthus that Menakā said·शक्रः सुरपतिश्चायं (śakraḥ surapatiścāyaṃ) — [you replied] "this is Śakra, the lord of the gods"[you replied] "this is Śakra, the lord of the gods"·स नेति त्वं तदाब्रवीः (sa neti tvaṃ tadābravīḥ) — "he is not [Śiva]," you then said"he is not [Śiva]," you then said

तावच्चन्द्रः समायातः (tāvaccandraḥ samāyātaḥ) — then Candra arrivedthen Candra arrived·शोभां तद्द्विगुणां दधत् (śobhāṃ taddviguṇāṃ dadhat) — bearing a splendour doubled over thatbearing a splendour doubled over that·दृष्ट्वा तं प्राह रुद्रोऽयं (dṛṣṭvā taṃ prāha rudro'yaṃ) — seeing him, she said, "this is Rudra"seeing him, she said, "this is Rudra"·तां तु नेति त्वमब्रवीः (tāṃ tu neti tvamabravīḥ) — but you said to her, "No"but you said to her, "No"

तावत्सूर्यः समायातः (tāvatsūryaḥ samāyātaḥ) — then Sūrya arrivedthen Sūrya arrived·शोभां तद्द्विगुणां दधत् (śobhāṃ taddviguṇāṃ dadhat) — bearing a splendour doubled over thatbearing a splendour doubled over that·दृष्ट्वा तं प्राह सा सोऽयं (dṛṣṭvā taṃ prāha sā so'yaṃ) — seeing him, she said, "is this he?"seeing him, she said, "is this he?"·तां तु नेति त्वमब्रवीः (tāṃ tu neti tvamabravīḥ) — but you said to her, "No"but you said to her, "No"

तावत्समागतास्तत्र (tāvatsamāgatāstatra) — then there arrivedthen there arrived·भृग्वाद्याश्च मुनीश्वराः (bhṛgvādyāśca munīśvarāḥ) — the lords of sages, headed by Bhṛguthe lords of sages, headed by Bhṛgu·तेजसो राशयः सर्वे (tejaso rāśayaḥ sarve) — all of them heaps of radianceall of them heaps of radiance·स्वशिष्यगणसंयुताः (svaśiṣyagaṇasaṃyutāḥ) — accompanied by their own bands of disciplesaccompanied by their own bands of disciples

तन्मध्ये चैव वागीशं (tanmadhye caiva vāgīśaṃ) — and among them, Vāgīśa [Bṛhaspati]and among them, Vāgīśa [Bṛhaspati]·दृष्ट्वा सा प्राह मेनका (dṛṣṭvā sā prāha menakā) — seeing him, that Menakā saidseeing him, that Menakā said·रुद्रोऽयं गिरिजास्वामी (rudro'yaṃ girijāsvāmī) — "is this Rudra, the lord of Girijā?""is this Rudra, the lord of Girijā?"·तदा नेति त्वमब्रवीः (tadā neti tvamabravīḥ) — then you said, "No"then you said, "No"

तावद्ब्रह्मा समायातः (tāvadbrahmā samāyātaḥ) — then Brahmā arrivedthen Brahmā arrived·तेजसां राशिरुत्तमः (tejasāṃ rāśiruttamaḥ) — the highest heap of radiancethe highest heap of radiance·सर्षिवर्यसुतः साक्षात् (sarṣivaryasutaḥ sākṣāt) — together with the finest sages, his sons, visiblytogether with the finest sages, his sons, visibly·धर्मपुंज इव स्तुतः (dharmapuṃja iva stutaḥ) — praised as though he were a mass of Dharma incarnatepraised as though he were a mass of Dharma incarnate

दृष्ट्वा मां तं तदा मेना (dṛṣṭvā māṃ taṃ tadā menā) — beholding me then, Menābeholding me then, Menā·महाहर्षवती मुने (mahāharṣavatī mune) — O sage, filled with great joyO sage, filled with great joy·सोऽयं शिवापतिः प्राह (so'yaṃ śivāpatiḥ prāha) — said, "is this the husband of Śivā?"said, "is this the husband of Śivā?"·तां तु नेति त्वमब्रवीः (tāṃ tu neti tvamabravīḥ) — but you said to her, "No"but you said to her, "No"

कोटिकन्दर्पलावण्यः (koṭikandarpalāvaṇyaḥ) — of the loveliness of a myriad Kāmadevasof the loveliness of a myriad Kāmadevas·पीताम्बरधरः स्वराट् (pītāmbaradharaḥ svarāṭ) — wearing yellow garments, self-resplendentwearing yellow garments, self-resplendent·राजीवलोचनः शान्तः (rājīvalocanaḥ śāntaḥ) — lotus-eyed, serenelotus-eyed, serene·पक्षीन्द्रवरवाहनः (pakṣīndravaravāhanaḥ) — mounted on the finest of birds [Garuḍa]mounted on the finest of birds [Garuḍa]

शंखादिलक्षणैर्युक्तो (śaṃkhādilakṣaṇairyukto) — furnished with the marks of the conch and the restfurnished with the marks of the conch and the rest·मुकुटादिविभूषितः (mukuṭādivibhūṣitaḥ) — adorned with a crown and other ornamentsadorned with a crown and other ornaments·श्रीवत्सवक्षा लक्ष्मीशो (śrīvatsavakṣā lakṣmīśo) — bearing the Śrīvatsa mark on his breast, the lord of Lakṣmībearing the Śrīvatsa mark on his breast, the lord of Lakṣmī·ह्यप्रमेयप्रभान्वितः (hyaprameyaprabhānvitaḥ) — indeed endowed with immeasurable radianceindeed endowed with immeasurable radiance

शंकराखिलकार्यस्य (śaṃkarākhilakāryasya) — of all Śaṅkara's undertakingsof all Śaṅkara's undertakings·ह्यधिकारी च तत्प्रियः (hyadhikārī ca tatpriyaḥ) — indeed the officiant, and dear to himindeed the officiant, and dear to him·अतोऽधिको वरो ज्ञेयः (ato'dhiko varo jñeyaḥ) — therefore he is to be known as an even greater bridegroomtherefore he is to be known as an even greater bridegroom·स शिवः पार्वतीपतिः (sa śivaḥ pārvatīpatiḥ) — namely Śiva, the husband of Pārvatīnamely Śiva, the husband of Pārvatī

तच्छोभां वर्णितुं मेने (tacchobhāṃ varṇituṃ mene) — "his splendour, O Menā, to describe"his splendour, O Menā, to describe·मया नैव हि शक्यते (mayā naiva hi śakyate) — is indeed not possible for me"is indeed not possible for me"·स एवाखिलब्रह्माण्डपतिः (sa evākhilabrahmāṇḍapatiḥ) — he alone is the lord of the entire universehe alone is the lord of the entire universe·सर्वेश्वरः स्वराट् (sarveśvaraḥ svarāṭ) — the lord of all, self-resplendentthe lord of all, self-resplendent

धन्याहं सर्वथा जाता (dhanyāhaṃ sarvathā jātā) — "I have become blessed in every way"I have become blessed in every way·पार्वत्या जन्मनाधुना (pārvatyā janmanādhunā) — now, by the birth of Pārvatīnow, by the birth of Pārvatī·धन्यो गिरीश्वरोऽप्यद्य (dhanyo girīśvaro'pyadya) — Girīśvara [my husband] too is blessed todayGirīśvara [my husband] too is blessed today·सर्वं धन्यतमं मम (sarvaṃ dhanyatamaṃ mama) — everything of mine is most blessedeverything of mine is most blessed

ये ये दृष्टा मया देवा (ye ye dṛṣṭā mayā devā) — "whatsoever gods, leading ones, have been seen by me"whatsoever gods, leading ones, have been seen by me·नायकाः सुप्रभान्विताः (nāyakāḥ suprabhānvitāḥ) — endowed with fine splendourendowed with fine splendour·एतेषां यः पतिः सोऽत्र (eteṣāṃ yaḥ patiḥ so'tra) — he who is the lord of these herehe who is the lord of these here·पतिरस्या भविष्यति (patirasyā bhaviṣyati) — shall become her [Pārvatī's] husband"shall become her [Pārvatī's] husband"

अस्याः किं वर्ण्यते भाग्यम् (asyāḥ kiṃ varṇyate bhāgyam) — "what is there to say of her good fortune"what is there to say of her good fortune·अपि वर्षशतैरपि (api varṣaśatairapi) — even across a hundred years?even across a hundred years?·वर्णितुं शक्यते नैव (varṇituṃ śakyate naiva) — it can indeed not be describedit can indeed not be described·तत्प्रभुप्राप्तिदर्शनात् (tatprabhuprāptidarśanāt) — seeing that she has attained such a Lord [as husband]"seeing that she has attained such a Lord [as husband]"

इत्यवादीच्च सा मेना (ityavādīcca sā menā) — thus spoke that Menāthus spoke that Menā·प्रेमनिर्भरमानसा (premanirbharamānasā) — her mind overflowing with loveher mind overflowing with love·तावत्समागतो रुद्रः (tāvatsamāgato rudraḥ) — just then Rudra arrivedjust then Rudra arrived·अद्भुतातिकारकः प्रभुः (adbhutātikārakaḥ prabhuḥ) — the Lord, worker of surpassing wondersthe Lord, worker of surpassing wonders

अद्भुतात्मगणास्तात (adbhutātmagaṇāstāta) — O dear one, of wondrous form, [with] attendantsO dear one, of wondrous form, [with] attendants·मेनागर्वापहारकाः (menāgarvāpahārakāḥ) — [gaṇas] that were removers of Menā's pride[gaṇas] that were removers of Menā's pride·आत्मानं दर्शयन् (ātmānaṃ darśayan) — showing himselfshowing himself·मायानिर्लिप्तं निर्विकारकम् (māyānirliptaṃ nirvikārakam) — untouched by Māyā, unchanginguntouched by Māyā, unchanging

तमागतमभिप्रेत्य (tamāgatamabhipretya) — perceiving that he had arrivedperceiving that he had arrived·नारद त्वं मुने तदा (nārada tvaṃ mune tadā) — O Nārada, you, O sage, thenO Nārada, you, O sage, then·मेनामवोचः सुप्रीत्या (menāmavocaḥ suprītyā) — spoke to Menā with great affectionspoke to Menā with great affection·दर्शयंस्तं शिवापतिम् (darśayaṃstaṃ śivāpatim) — pointing out to her that husband of Śivāpointing out to her that husband of Śivā

इत्युक्ता हर्षिता मेना (ityuktā harṣitā menā) — thus addressed, Menā, delightedthus addressed, Menā, delighted·तं ददर्श मुदा प्रभुम् (taṃ dadarśa mudā prabhum) — beheld that Lord with joybeheld that Lord with joy·अद्भुताकृतिमीशानम् (adbhutākṛtimīśānam) — of wondrous form, the Rulerof wondrous form, the Ruler·अद्भुतानुगमद्भुतम् (adbhutānugamadbhutam) — with a wondrous retinue, himself a wonderwith a wondrous retinue, himself a wonder

तावदेव समायाता (tāvadeva samāyātā) — then indeed there arrivedthen indeed there arrived·रुद्रसेना महाद्भुता (rudrasenā mahādbhutā) — the host of Rudra, greatly wondrousthe host of Rudra, greatly wondrous·भूतप्रेतादिसंयुक्ता (bhūtapretādisaṃyuktā) — joined by Bhūtas, Pretas and the restjoined by Bhūtas, Pretas and the rest·नानागणसमन्विता (nānāgaṇasamanvitā) — accompanied by manifold gaṇasaccompanied by manifold gaṇas

वात्यारूपधराः केचित् (vātyārūpadharāḥ kecit) — some bore the form of a whirlwindsome bore the form of a whirlwind·पताकामर्मरस्वनाः (patākāmarmarasvanāḥ) — making a rustling sound like bannersmaking a rustling sound like banners·वक्रतुंडास्तत्र केचित् (vakratuṃḍāstatra kecit) — some there had crooked snoutssome there had crooked snouts·विरूपाश्चापरे तथा (virūpāścāpare tathā) — and others likewise were deformedand others likewise were deformed

कराला श्मश्रुला केचित् (karālā śmaśrulā kecit) — some were terrible-faced and beardedsome were terrible-faced and bearded·केचित्खञ्जा हालोचनाः (kecitkhañjā hālocanāḥ) — some were lame, some cross-eyedsome were lame, some cross-eyed·दण्डपाशधराः केचित् (daṇḍapāśadharāḥ kecit) — some bore a staff and noosesome bore a staff and noose·केचिन्मुद्गरपाणयः (kecinmudgarapāṇayaḥ) — some had a mace in handsome had a mace in hand

विरुद्धवाहनाः केचित् (viruddhavāhanāḥ kecit) — some had contrary [unnatural] mountssome had contrary [unnatural] mounts·शृंगनादनिनादिनः (śṛṃganādaninādinaḥ) — resounding with the blast of hornsresounding with the blast of horns·डमरोवादिनः केचित् (ḍamarovādinaḥ kecit) — some were players of the damaru drumsome were players of the damaru drum·केचिद्गोमुखवादिनः (kecidgomukhavādinaḥ) — and some were players of the gomukha hornand some were players of the gomukha horn

अमुखा विमुखाः केचित् (amukhā vimukhāḥ kecit) — some gaṇas were faceless, some turned awaysome gaṇas were faceless, some turned away·केचिद्बहुमुखा गणाः (kecidbahumukhā gaṇāḥ) — and some gaṇas had many facesand some gaṇas had many faces·अकरा विकराः केचित् (akarā vikarāḥ kecit) — some were handless, some had deformed handssome were handless, some had deformed hands·केचिद्बहुकरा गणाः (kecidbahukarā gaṇāḥ) — and some gaṇas had many handsand some gaṇas had many hands

अनेत्रा बहुनेत्राश्च (anetrā bahunetrāśca) — eyeless, and many-eyedeyeless, and many-eyed·विशिराः कुशिरास्तथा (viśirāḥ kuśirāstathā) — headless, and likewise ill-headedheadless, and likewise ill-headed·अकर्णा बहुकर्णाश्च (akarṇā bahukarṇāśca) — earless, and many-earedearless, and many-eared·नानावेषधरा गणाः (nānāveṣadharā gaṇāḥ) — gaṇas wearing manifold guisesgaṇas wearing manifold guises

इत्यादिविकृताकाराः (ityādivikṛtākārāḥ) — of such distorted shapes, and the likeof such distorted shapes, and the like·अनेके प्रबला गणाः (aneke prabalā gaṇāḥ) — many powerful gaṇasmany powerful gaṇas·असंख्याता तथा तात (asaṃkhyātā tathā tāta) — innumerable, and, O dear oneinnumerable, and, O dear one·महावीरा भयंकराः (mahāvīrā bhayaṃkarāḥ) — greatly heroic and fearsomegreatly heroic and fearsome

अङ्गुल्या दर्शयंस्त्वं तां (aṅgulyā darśayaṃstvaṃ tāṃ) — pointing with your finger, you [showed] herpointing with your finger, you [showed] her·मुने रुद्रगणांस्ततः (mune rudragaṇāṃstataḥ) — O sage, then, Rudra's gaṇasO sage, then, Rudra's gaṇas·हरस्य सेवकान्यश्च (harasya sevakānyaśca) — and Hara's other servantsand Hara's other servants·हरं चापि वरानने (haraṃ cāpi varānane) — and Hara himself too, O fair-faced oneand Hara himself too, O fair-faced one

असंख्यातान् गणान् दृष्ट्वा (asaṃkhyātān gaṇān dṛṣṭvā) — seeing those innumerable gaṇasseeing those innumerable gaṇas·भूतप्रेतादिकान् मुने (bhūtapretādikān mune) — the Bhūtas, Pretas and the rest, O sagethe Bhūtas, Pretas and the rest, O sage·तत्क्षणादभवत्सा वै (tatkṣaṇādabhavatsā vai) — in that very instant she indeed becamein that very instant she indeed became·मेनका त्रासशंकुला (menakā trāsaśaṃkulā) — Menakā, filled with terrorMenakā, filled with terror

तन्मध्ये शंकरं चैव (tanmadhye śaṃkaraṃ caiva) — and, in their midst, Śaṅkaraand, in their midst, Śaṅkara·निर्गुणं गुणवत्तरम् (nirguṇaṃ guṇavattaram) — attributeless, yet most possessed of attributesattributeless, yet most possessed of attributes·वृषभस्थं पञ्चवक्त्रं (vṛṣabhasthaṃ pañcavaktraṃ) — seated on the bull, five-facedseated on the bull, five-faced·त्रिनेत्रं भूतिभूषितम् (trinetraṃ bhūtibhūṣitam) — three-eyed, adorned with ashthree-eyed, adorned with ash

कर्पर्दिनं चन्द्रमौलिं (karpardinaṃ candramauliṃ) — wearing matted, braided hair, moon-crestedwearing matted, braided hair, moon-crested·दशहस्तं कपालिनम् (daśahastaṃ kapālinam) — ten-armed, bearing a skullten-armed, bearing a skull·व्याघ्रचर्मोत्तरीयं च (vyāghracarmottarīyaṃ ca) — and wearing a tiger-skin as his upper garmentand wearing a tiger-skin as his upper garment·पिनाकवरपाणिनम् (pinākavarapāṇinam) — the excellent Pināka [bow] in his handthe excellent Pināka [bow] in his hand

शूलयुक्तं विरूपाक्षं (śūlayuktaṃ virūpākṣaṃ) — furnished with a trident, deformed-eyedfurnished with a trident, deformed-eyed·विकृताकारमाकुलम् (vikṛtākāramākulam) — of distorted form, agitatedof distorted form, agitated·गजचर्म वसानं हि (gajacarma vasānaṃ hi) — indeed clad in an elephant-hideindeed clad in an elephant-hide·वीक्ष्य त्रेसे शिवाप्रसूः (vīkṣya trese śivāprasūḥ) — beholding him, Śivā's mother trembledbeholding him, Śivā's mother trembled

चकितां कम्पसंयुक्तां (cakitāṃ kampasaṃyuktāṃ) — her, astonished and tremblingher, astonished and trembling·विह्वलां विभ्रमद्धियम् (vihvalāṃ vibhramaddhiyam) — distraught, her mind reelingdistraught, her mind reeling·शिवोऽयमिति चाङ्गुल्या (śivo'yamiti cāṅgulyā) — "this is Śiva" — with your finger"this is Śiva" — with your finger·दर्शयंस्तां त्वमब्रवीः (darśayaṃstāṃ tvamabravīḥ) — pointing her toward him, you saidpointing her toward him, you said

त्वदीयं तद्वचः श्रुत्वा (tvadīyaṃ tadvacaḥ śrutvā) — hearing that word of yourshearing that word of yours·वाताहतलता इव (vātāhatalatā iva) — like a creeper struck by the windlike a creeper struck by the wind·सा पपात द्रुतं भूमौ (sā papāta drutaṃ bhūmau) — she fell quickly to the groundshe fell quickly to the ground·मेना दुःखभरा सती (menā duḥkhabharā satī) — Menā, being laden with sorrowMenā, being laden with sorrow
