Brahma continues his narration to Narada: Mena, eager to behold the bridegroom Shiva before anyone else, climbs to the moonlit terrace of the palace with Narada, wishing to see him first. Shiva, perceiving her pride, resolves on a wondrous sport and sends Vishnu and Brahma ahead separately with the other gods, saying he himself will follow after. As the divine host draws near, Mena watches with growing delight, and one by one she asks Narada whether each new arrival - the Gandharvas, Vasu, Manigriva and the Yakshas, Agni, Yama, Nirriti, Varuna, Vayu, Kubera, Ishana, Indra, Chandra, Surya, the sages headed by Bhrigu, Brihaspati, and finally Brahma himself - is Shiva, each more splendid than the last; each time Narada tells her no. When Vishnu arrives, resplendent beyond all who came before, Mena is certain this at last is Shiva, but Narada corrects her: this is Kesava, Hari, who presides over all of Shankara's affairs and is dear to him - so the true bridegroom must be greater still, namely Shiva, Parvati's husband, whose splendour Narada confesses he cannot even describe. Hearing this, Mena rejoices at Parvati's - and her own - extraordinary fortune, declaring that whoever is lord over all these gods shall be her daughter's husband, and that a hundred years could not exhaust the praise her good fortune deserves. Even as she is speaking, Rudra himself arrives, working wondrous illusions, his attendants marvellous in themselves, showing himself untouched by Maya and unchanging; Narada, with great affection, tells Mena that this is indeed Shankara, for whose sake Parvati performed her great austerity. Delighted, Mena beholds him with joy - until Rudra's vast and grotesque host arrives, full of Bhutas, Pretas, and gana of every misshapen and fearsome description, and Narada points out to her, one by one, Rudra's attendants, Hara's other servants, and finally Hara himself: fearsome, five-faced, three-eyed, ash-smeared, ten-armed, skull and trident in hand, wearing a tiger-skin and an elephant-hide. At the sight of this terrifying form, Mena, trembling and distraught, collapses to the ground like a wind-struck creeper, crying out that she has been deceived, and swoons away; only after her companions attend her with many remedies does she slowly regain her senses.

Doubtful readingThe word printed as 'तसं' is grammatically anomalous (a past participle agreeing with तपः, i.e. तप्तम् — "performed" — is what sense and the parallel Hindi commentary require: "कठिन तप किया था"). It is transcribed exactly as printed rather than silently emended, since the intended reading could not be verified with certainty from the print.
