Continuing his narration to Nārada, Brahmā relates how Menā, on regaining her senses after the sight of Śiva's fearsome form, fell into violent lament and reviled everyone in turn — her sons, then Pārvatī, then herself and Himavān, then Nārada and the seven sages who had set Pārvatī upon her austerities, cursing her own fortune and threatening every manner of harm to her daughter and to herself. Nārada tried to reassure her that Śiva's terrible form was mere play and not his true one, but Menā drove him away in fury; Indra and the other gods, then the seven sages headed by Vasiṣṭha, came in turn to plead Śiva's case, only to be rebuffed as liars. Pārvatī herself came and gently reasoned with her mother, declaring that she had already chosen Śiva in mind, word and deed — at which Menā, enraged, struck her and had to be pulled away by the assembled sages. Himavān himself then came and tried to calm his wife, reminding her that Śiva's terrible guise was only sport and that they had both already agreed, on witnessing his greatness, to give Pārvatī to him; Menā, unmoved, demanded instead that Himavān either kill their daughter outright, drown her in the sea, or else she would take her own life rather than see her wed to so terrible a bridegroom. Brahmā himself then came and expounded at length the true, all-pervading, unknowable nature of Śiva — the source from which Brahmā, Viṣṇu and all creation spring — urging Menā to see Śiva in everything and to give Pārvatī to him gladly; Menā, only a little softened, still refused, and railed even at the Siddhas led by Sanaka when they too came pleading Śiva's case. Finally Viṣṇu himself, dear friend of Śiva, came and reasoned with her at length, declaring that Śiva alone is the source of the goddess and of Puruṣottama, of Brahmā and Rudra himself, and of the whole moving and unmoving universe, and that this very terrible form at her door was Śiva's own play, drawn there by the power of Pārvatī's austerity. Won over a little by Viṣṇu's gracious words, but still moved by Śiva's own Māyā, Menā would not wholly relent — she declared only that she would give her daughter if the bridegroom took on a beautiful body, and not otherwise, however great the effort — and, blessed and firm in her vow though impelled all the while by Śiva's own will, she fell silent.

Then, having regained consciousness, virtuous Menā, the beloved wife of the mountain-lord, wailed in great agitation and fell to reviling everyone.

O sage, you once declared that Śivā would choose Śiva; and thereafter, at Himavān's word, she was set to the task of worship and austerity.

And now its true fruit is seen: contrary to all hope, and ruinous. O evil-minded sage, I, the wretched one, have been utterly deceived by you.

And the austerity she performed — so severe that even sages could scarcely accomplish it — has yielded just this fruit: a thing that brings grief to all who behold it.

Doubtful readingThis verse prints as three pādas (six quarter-lines) rather than the usual two-line anuṣṭubh, and the compound printed as 'स्वामिन्निःश्रयेण' is unclear in the source scan — most plausibly a metrically-contracted form of निःश्रेयसेन ("for the sake of the highest good"), matching the accompanying Hindi gloss ("मैं शरीर त्याग दूँगी"), but the exact akṣaras could not be confirmed with certainty.
