Chapter 45·Śiva's Radiant Form and the City's Rejoicing·Verses 1–46
Continuing his narration to Nārada, Brahmā recalls how Nārada, sent by Viṣṇu, went to Śiva and, after praising him with many hymns, prevailed upon him to assume a wondrously beautiful and gracious form. Nārada, delighted beyond measure at the sight, returned with Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Indra and the whole host of gods, Gaṇas, Siddhas and sages, all in festive array, to where Menā sat; and there he showed her that radiant, moon-crowned form of Śiva, resplendent beyond description, served by Gaṅgā and Yamunā with chowries and by the eight Siddhis with dance. Menā, beholding it, stood transfixed for a moment like a figure in a painting, then joyfully declared her daughter blessed and begged Śiva's forgiveness for her past reviling of him. Meanwhile the women of Himavat's city, hearing the tumult, abandoned whatever they were doing — bathing, fanning their husbands, nursing their children, dressing, applying collyrium or lac-dye — and rushed out just as they were to see him, and were overcome with rapture at the sight. They declared their own eyes and lives fruitful for having seen him, praised Pārvatī as blessed for having won such a husband through her penance, praised Brahmā for having joined the divine pair, and likened Pārvatī's fortune to that of Lakṣmī winning Nārāyaṇa or Sarasvatī winning Brahmā. They then worshipped Śiva with sandal-paste, rice and parched grain, and stood on with Menā extolling her good fortune and that of Himavat, until Śiva himself, hearing their auspicious words, became greatly delighted along with Viṣṇu and all the assembled gods.
