Continuing his narration to Nārada, Brahmā describes how joyful Śambhu set out with his gaṇas, the gods and his messenger to Himācala's abode, while Menā too withdrew into her house with the women to prepare, then came forth with the sages' wives, lamp-vessel in hand, to perform nīrājana at the door for her arriving son-in-law. Beholding Śiva's radiant, five-faced, three-eyed form, adorned in unearthly jewels and garments beyond price, Menā's grief dissolved wholly into wonder and joy; recalling what Pārvatī herself had once told her of Śiva's beauty, she found the reality to exceed even that report, and returned inside marvelling. The young women praised Girijā's fortune, some hailing her as the goddess Durgā herself and declaring that no such priceless bridegroom had ever before been seen; gandharvas sang, apsarases danced, and musicians played on every side as all the gods rejoiced at the sight of Śaṅkara's form. Himācala and Menā then performed the door-ceremony (dvārācāra) amid great festivity, after which Menā took leave and returned within, while Śiva went with his gaṇas and the gods to his appointed quarters. Meanwhile the attendant women of the inner palace carried the family deity Durgā outside to worship her; the gods gazed upon her unblinking, dark and lustrous in hue, adorned from crown to sole in lavish, jewelled detail, and bowed their heads to her as the primal mother of the universe. Śiva himself, catching sight of her from the corner of his eye and recognizing her true form, forgot everything, his whole body thrilling with joy at this vision of Gaurī — for the Durgā worshipped as family deity is here revealed as none other than Śivā, the goddess herself. Kālī then, having worshipped the family Mother outside the city, entered her father's lovely mansion together with the Brahmin women; and Śaṅkara, together with Viṣṇu, Brahmā and the gods, went joyfully to the quarters assigned him by Himācala, where all remained happily in attendance upon him, richly honoured by the mountain-lord.

"What Pārvatī herself once told me of this — I now see the Supreme Lord's beauty to be even greater than that."
NoteThis verse and the next continue Menā's unspoken thought (मनसैव ह्युवाच, v.14) as inner speech; no separate speaker heading is printed for it, so none is added here — the whole chapter remains framed by the single ब्रह्मोवाच heading at v.1.

"Never before have we seen a bridegroom obtainable by any gift or bounty of ours — the goddess Girijā is indeed blessed!" — so said some of the maidens.
Noteअस्माभिर्दानगोचरः is a compressed and somewhat unusual phrase; it is rendered here as "obtainable by any gift or bounty of ours," i.e. a bridegroom of such worth that no dowry or largesse could have secured him — meaning no one so priceless had ever before been seen.

Meanwhile, the attendant women of the inner palace took up Durgā, the family deity, and went outside to worship her.
NoteDurgā here is Himavān's family deity (kuladevatā), whose image or embodied presence the palace women carry out for worship. The extraordinarily bejewelled description that follows (vv.24-30), and Śiva's own reaction to her in vv.32-33, identify this Durgā with Pārvatī/Śivā herself — the chapter's underlying point that the family goddess worshipped is none other than the bride.

The three-eyed Lord, filled with joy, beheld her from the corner of his eye; seeing her true form, Śiva let go of the fever of separation.
Noteसत्याकृतिं ("her true form") signals that Śiva recognizes this jewelled Durgā to be his own consort in her real nature, not merely her image — the identification made explicit in the following verse.

Then Kālī, having gone outside the city and worshipped the family Mother, entered, together with the Brahmin women, the lovely mansion of her own father.
Noteकाली here is an epithet of Pārvatī herself (she was dark-complexioned before her austerities, per the Purāṇa's own account) — confirming that the Durgā worshipped as kuladevatā in vv.23-33 and the bride "Kālī" who then walks back inside are one and the same goddess.
