Continuing his narration to Nārada, Brahmā describes the day of Śiva and Pārvatī's wedding at Himavān's house. Himavān has the upanayana (sacred-thread) rite performed with Vedic mantras for both Pārvatī and Śiva; Viṣṇu, the gods and sages enter his inner apartments, and Pārvatī is bathed and richly adorned with the ornaments Śiva had sent, while festivities and gifts to brāhmaṇas fill both households. Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Indra and all the celestials, having paid homage to Śivā, withdraw to their places. Garga, the astrologer, then tells Himavān that the moment has come to bring Śiva to his house; overjoyed, Himavān sends mountains and brāhmaṇas to fetch him with great festivity. Hearing the approaching music, Śiva's attendants and the gods rise up rejoicing, certain that the hour of the wedding has arrived; when Himavān's ministers come in person to summon them, Viṣṇu and the gods rejoice and hail the mountain-lord, and Śiva himself, eager to attain Kālī (Pārvatī), conceals his own inner joy. Śiva bathes with auspicious substances, is dressed and mounted upon his bull, and processes toward Himavān's house beneath a great umbrella and whisks, escorted by Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Indra and the lokapālas, brāhmaṇas and mountains, amid conches, drums, song and dance, and showers of flowers. Welcomed and worshipped, Śiva enters the sacrificial pavilion; the mountains help him down from his bull, and Himavān performs the waving of lamps before him and honours all the assembled gods and sages, then leads Viṣṇu, Śiva and Brahmā to seats of honour on jewelled thrones in the courtyard, while Menā and the women perform nirājana and the family priest completes the madhuparka and other preliminary rites. Himavān then leads Śiva with great joy into the inner altar-ground where Pārvatī, richly adorned, sits waiting on the dais; as Bṛhaspati and the gods watch for the auspicious moment and Garga recites the praṇava beside the water-clock, Garga pronounces the puṇyāha and fills Pārvatī's cupped hands with unbroken rice, which she showers upon Śiva; she then worships Rudra with curd, rice, kuśa grass and water, gazing upon him for whose sake she had once undertaken her great austerity, and Śiva, at Brahmā's and Garga's urging, worships Śivā in turn according to worldly custom. Radiant, worshipping each other and pervading the whole universe, the divine pair are honoured with the waving of lamps — first by Lakṣmī and the other goddesses, then by the wives of the brāhmaṇas and the women of the city — amid universal rejoicing.
