Chapter 48 · The Giving Away of the Bride · Verses 1–56

Continuing his narration to Nārada, Brahmā describes how, urged on by the preceptor Garga, Himavān and Menā began the rite of giving their daughter Pārvatī in marriage. When the auspicious moment arrived and the officiating brāhmaṇas had recited the lunar day and other particulars, Himācala, moved by love for Śambhu, asked him to declare his gotra, lineage, name, Veda and branch, as custom required. Śaṅkara fell silent and downcast at the question; seen thus by the assembled gods, sages, gandharvas, yakṣas and siddhas, he said nothing, until Nārada broke into a gentle laugh and took up the vīṇā, his mind fixed on Śiva. Forcibly restrained by Himavān, Viṣṇu, Brahmā and all the gods and sages from playing it further, Nārada nonetheless would not stop, since it was Śiva's own will; when at last forbidden outright, he turned to Himavān and rebuked him for his folly in asking Hara's own gotra — a thing unknown even to Viṣṇu and Brahmā. He declared Śiva to be the formless, unqualified, changeless supreme Brahman, master of Māyā and higher than the highest, who though without gotra, lineage or name takes on qualities and a beautiful body only by his own will, and who had, through Pārvatī's austerity, without doubt become Himavān's son-in-law. No one, Nārada said, however wise, truly knows Śiva, whose Māyā holds even Hari and Brahmā in its sway; Himavān should entertain no further doubt about so extraordinary a bridegroom. Turning again to Himavān, Nārada explained that Maheśa's true gotra and lineage are Nāda, the primal sound, itself not different from Śiva and born first of all in creation, and that it was this same impulse, moved by Śiva, that had made him play the vīṇā. Hearing this, Himādri's doubts vanished, and Viṣṇu, the gods and sages, marvelling at Śiva's depth, praised him among themselves; the mountains, headed by Meru, urged Himavān with one voice to delay no further and give the maiden. Himavān then formally gave his daughter to Rudra with the appointed mantra, placing Śivā's hand in Śiva's; Giriśa took Girijā's lotus hand in his own with a Vedic mantra, and, touching the earth, recited by custom the mantra of Kāma beginning 'who gave', displaying thereby the way of the world. A great festival of rejoicing broke out in heaven, on earth and in the sky, with cries of 'well done' and 'homage', song and dance by gandharvas and apsarases, and universal delight among gods and sages alike. Himācala, well pleased, completed every rite of the giving-away in full; his kinsmen worshipped Śivā and made offerings to Śiva, and Himālaya himself, his heart content, bestowed lavish gifts and dowry — jewels, vessels, cows, horses, devoted maidservants, elephants and jewelled chariots — upon the divine couple. Having thus given his daughter Girijā to the supreme lord according to due rite, Himālaya attained the fulfilment of his life; with folded hands he praised Parameśvara with the hymn of the Mādhyandina recension, and, at his command, the assembled sages performed the anointing of Śivā's head and the rite of sprinkling while invoking the names of the gods, amid a great festival that brought supreme joy to all.
