Chapter 30 · The Celebration of Pārvatī's Return · Verses 1–54

Nārada asks what Pārvatī did and where she went after Śiva returned to his own mountain, and Brahmā tells how she went joyfully to her father's house, greeted at the city gates by Himavat, Menā, her brothers led by Maināka, and the whole town in festival array — decorated streets, auspicious pots, plantain-pillars, brāhmaṇas chanting, music and conch-blasts — and welcomed home by her overjoyed parents with blessing and embrace, all praising her for having redeemed the family, while the gods themselves showered flowers and sang her praises from the sky. Once the celebrations settle and Himavat departs to bathe in the Gaṅgā, Śiva, ever playful and devoted to his devotees, arrives at Menā's courtyard disguised as a brilliant dancer, and performs such enchanting music and dance that the whole city gathers to watch and Menā herself is captivated; Pārvatī, recognising Śiva in her heart, swoons with love and silently chooses him again as her husband, and he grants the boon before vanishing and resuming his dance. When Menā tries to reward the dancer with jewels, he refuses them and instead begs for Durgā herself as alms; outraged, Menā tries to have him thrown out, but no one can bear to approach his blazing splendour. To Himavat, who arrives from his bath, the mendicant then reveals form after wondrous form — Viṣṇu wreathed in the very flowers offered to him in worship, four-faced red Brahmā chanting the Vedas, the sun itself, Rudra laughing beside Pārvatī, and finally a formless, attributeless radiance beyond all shape — leaving Himavat astonished and filled with bliss. Still, when the mendicant again asks only for Durgā and nothing else, Himavat, bewildered by Śiva's own Māyā, cannot bring himself to consent, and the beggar accepts nothing and disappears on the spot. Only then do Menā and Himavat realise that Śiva has deceived them both and departed to his own abode — and reflecting on all they have seen, supreme, liberating devotion to Śiva is born in the hearts of them both.

Thus he saw there many forms of his; he became at once greatly astonished, filled with supreme bliss.

Then that excellent mendicant, indeed the very begetter of her from him and from her, asked as alms for Durgā herself, and accepted nothing else at all.

The lord of mountains, deluded by Śiva's own Māyā, did not accept this; the mendicant took nothing at all, and then vanished from that very place.
