Seeing Himavat and Menā's unwavering devotion to Śiva, the gods, led by Indra, grow anxious that the mountain-king may himself attain liberation and abandon the earth, and so, reasoning that Pārvatī will in any case accept no bridegroom but Śiva, they resolve to hasten matters by having Bṛhaspati go and revile Śiva before Himālaya, trusting that the sting of the insult will make Himavat give his daughter away all the sooner. Bṛhaspati, remembering Mahādeva, refuses outright, rebuking the gods for their self-interest and declaring he would rather send someone else, or have the gods themselves go praise Śiva and let him settle the matter through self-deprecation rather than through another's reviling. Following this counsel, the gods travel to Kailāsa and extol Śiva with heartfelt hymns; Śiva, laughing, agrees to handle the affair himself and sends the gods away reassured. Ever playful and devoted to his devotees, he then sets out for Himālaya's court disguised as a wandering Vaiṣṇava brāhmaṇa - staff, umbrella, crystal rosary, śālagrāma and tilaka - and is received with great honour by Himavat and, secretly recognised in her heart, by Pārvatī herself. Asked who he is, the disguised Śiva describes himself as a wise and virtuous wandering ascetic, then reveals that he has heard Himavat wishes to give his lotus-like daughter to Hara - and proceeds to catalogue Śiva's least flattering attributes at length: shelterless, unattached, ill-formed, dwelling in cremation grounds, garbed in snakes, naked, of unknown family, quick to fury, ash-smeared, matted-haired, a wandering beggar who has forsaken the Vedic path. He urges Himavat to reconsider this unwise resolve, protests that he himself is no fit vessel for such a gift, warns that the wise will only smile and grieve at the news, points out that Śiva has no wealth or kinsmen to match Himavat's own riches, and advises him to consult Menā, his sons, and all the learned - Pārvatī herself being absent - closing with the proverb that a sick man always dislikes good medicine and craves what harms him. Having spoken thus, the brāhmaṇa eats the meal offered him and, well pleased, quietly withdraws to his own abode - Śiva having played out, once more, one of his many līlās.

Having known their supreme, unwavering devotion to Śiva, O Nārada, all the gods headed by Śakra pondered as follows.
तयोर्भक्तिं शिवे (tayorbhaktiṃ śive) — the devotion of the two (Himavat and Menā) to Śivaज्ञात्वा परामव्यभिचारिणीम्। (jñātvā parāmavyabhicāriṇīm) — having known it to be supreme and unwaveringसर्वे शक्रादयो देवाश्चिचिन्तुरिति (sarve śakrādayo) — all the gods, headed by Śakraनारद॥ १ (devāścicinturiti nārada 1) — pondered thus, O Nārada

If, through exclusive devotion, the mountain gives his daughter to him, he will surely attain liberation at once, right here in Bhārata.

If the bearer of countless jewels abandons the earth and departs, the very name of the earth as “Ratnagarbhā” (jewel-wombed) will surely become false.
अनन्तरत्नाधारश्चेत्पृथ्वीं त्यक्त्वा (anantaratnādhāraścetpṛthvīṃ tyaktvā) — if the bearer of countless jewels, the earth,प्रयास्यति। (prayāsyati) — abandoning it, departsरत्नगर्भाभिधा भूर्मिथ्यैव भविता (ratnagarbhābhidhā bhūrmithyaiva) — the earth's name 'jewel-wombed' will surely become falseध्रुवम्॥ ३ (bhavitā dhruvam 3) — will certainly become so

Giving up his immobile nature and assuming a divine form, having given his daughter to the wielder of the trident, he will go to Śiva's world.

Having reasoned thus, all the gods, conferring among themselves, greatly astonished, resolved then to send the guru there.
