Chapter 32·The Arrival of the Seven Sages·Verses 1–65
Hearing what the disguised, self-reviling brāhmaṇa has reported of Śiva, Menā, distraught and enraged, tells Himavat she will never give Pārvatī to so ill-favoured and destitute a bridegroom, and threatens to die, to flee the house, or to drown herself and her daughter rather than consent; then, weeping, she withdraws to her chamber of wrath. Meanwhile Śiva, troubled at heart by separation from Kālī, remembers the Seven Sages, who arrive at once with Arundhatī, radiant as the sun; deeply honoured by them, Śiva sets aside his own recitation to receive their praise, and the sages, overwhelmed at his having remembered them, ask what task they may perform for him. Śiva explains that, though he himself needs nothing, his self-effacing conduct is always for the world's benefit — the gods being in distress from the boon-armoured demon Tāraka, whom only Śiva's own marriage to Pārvatī can ultimately check — and tells how, having gone in a beggar's guise to Himavat's house at Pārvatī's own bidding, he purified Kālī and was accepted as bridegroom by her devoted parents, and then, prompted by the gods, disguised himself as a reviling Vaiṣṇava to test that devotion, so that Himavat and Menā now hesitate to give their daughter. He therefore sends the sages to persuade the couple with fitting, Veda-sanctioned words, since he has already resolved on the marriage and promised Pārvatī her desired boon. The sages, delighted at being entrusted with a task serving the union of the world's father and mother, bow to Śiva and fly through the sky to Himavat's city, marvelling at its splendour — finer than Alakā, heaven, Bhogavatī, or Amarāvatī, with crystal and jewelled houses, wish-granting trees, gardens, lakes, and godlike inhabitants — until they reach Himavat's own dwelling. Seeing the seven sun-bright sages approaching from the sky, Himavat rejoices at the honour about to fall on his house, comes forward himself to receive them with reverence, worships them, and, once they are seated, asks with humility and devotion what small service he, a mere householder, might render to sages already so complete in themselves.
