Chapter 29 · The Dialogue of Śivā and Śiva · Verses 1–42

Nārada asks Brahmā to continue the story, and Brahmā tells how Pārvatī, overjoyed at the sight of Śiva's own blissful form, reminds him that he once destroyed Dakṣa's sacrifice for her sake in her former life as Satī, and that Dakṣa's earlier failure to honour the navagrahas at that wedding was itself the flaw that doomed it. She asks him now to go, in the guise of a mendicant, to seek her properly from her father Himavat, so that his fame may spread through the world and her father's household be fulfilled by a marriage performed exactly according to the prescribed rite. Śiva, delighted, reminds her in turn that all beings are impermanent, that he who is one has taken on multiplicity, and that though he is by nature the unchanging, independent, qualityless supreme Self, he becomes subject to her — Prakṛti, the great Māyā that fashions and sustains the whole world — purely out of love for his devotees. Pārvatī affirms this same truth from her own side, declaring that she is eternally his devotee and wife through every birth, that he is Brahman beyond Prakṛti, and yet, for the deliverance of his devotees, also playful and manifold; she asks him only to spread his fame through some wonderful act so that people may easily cross the ocean of existence by singing of it. Bowing low with joined hands, she falls silent, and Śiva, laughing and delighted at what is really a piece of worldly theatre he is agreeing to play out, resolves at once to act. He then vanishes from her sight and departs, his heart drawn by longing for Kālī, to Kailāsa, where he joyfully recounts the whole matter to Nandin and the other gaṇas — who, along with Bhairava and the rest, rejoice greatly and hold a grand celebration. Great auspiciousness fills that place, all sorrow is dispelled, and Rudra himself is filled with joy.
