The sages ask Sūta how many earthen liṅgas should be worshipped for each particular desire. Sūta gives the count for learning, wealth, a son, cloth, release, land, compassion, pilgrimage-merit, friendship, subjugation, an enemy's ruin, delusion, banishment, paralysis, estrangement, freedom from fetters, and safety from a king's wrath or thieves or witchcraft — up to ten thousand for every desire at once, and a crore for one who would become Śiva himself. He grades liṅgas threefold by size, declares the universal right of every varṇa and of women to worship the liṅga (Vedic-path worship reserved for Vedic twice-born), sets out the worship of Śiva's eight cosmic forms and his retinue of eleven Rudras, and closes with the rule of facing north, keeping to the liṅga's open (southern) side, and never worshipping Śaṅkara without ash, rudrākṣa and bilva leaves.

For the twice-born, worship by the Vedic path too is excellent; for other beings too, worship by the Vedic path is not sanctioned.
