अथ विंशोऽध्यायः
Sūta tells the worship of the earthen liṅga for devotees of the Veda. After the bath, the sandhyā prayer, the brahmayajña and the water offering, the worshipper wears ash and rudrākṣa. He brings clean clay from a river bank, a pond, a mountain, a forest or a temple, cleans it with water and shapes the liṅga. Then comes the full Vedic rite. Each step has its own mantra: the sprinkling, the preparing of the ground, the installing, the seat, the invoking, the water for the feet, the baths in milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar, the cloth, sandal paste, rice, flowers, bilva leaves, incense, lamp, food, fruit, the gift to the priest, the waving of lights, the walk around the god, the bow and five gestures. It ends with the Śatarudriya and the sending off. A short Vedic rite follows, with the five mantras sadyojāta, vāmadeva, aghora, tatpuruṣa and īśāna for fetching the clay, pouring the water, shaping, invoking and installing. Last comes a rite for everyone with eight names of Śiva, a meditation on Śiva on Kailāsa and a prayer of surrender. Reading or hearing the chapter cleans away sin and gives long life, health, fame and heaven.सूतजी वेदके भक्तोंके लिये पार्थिव लिंगकी पूजा बताते हैं। स्नान, सन्ध्या, ब्रह्मयज्ञ और तर्पणके बाद उपासक भस्म और रुद्राक्ष धारण करता है। वह नदीके किनारे, तालाब, पर्वत, वन या मन्दिरसे शुद्ध मिट्टी लाता है, उसे जलसे शुद्ध करके लिंग बनाता है। फिर पूरी वैदिक विधि आती है। हर चरणका अपना मन्त्र है: प्रोक्षण, भूमिकी तैयारी, स्थापना, आसन, आवाहन, पाद्य, दूध, दही, घी, शहद और शक्करसे स्नान, वस्त्र, चन्दन, अक्षत, फूल, बिल्वपत्र, धूप, दीप, नैवेद्य, फल, दक्षिणा, आरती, परिक्रमा, प्रणाम और पाँच मुद्राएँ। अन्तमें शतरुद्रियका पाठ और विसर्जन होता है। इसके बाद संक्षिप्त वैदिक विधि है, जिसमें सद्योजात, वामदेव, अघोर, तत्पुरुष और ईशान, इन पाँच मन्त्रोंसे मिट्टी लाना, जल डालना, लिंग बनाना, आवाहन और स्थापना होती है। अन्तमें सबके लिये शिवके आठ नामोंसे पूजा, कैलासपर विराजमान शिवका ध्यान और शरणागतिकी प्रार्थना बतायी गयी है। इस अध्यायको पढ़ने या सुननेसे पाप दूर होते हैं और आयु, आरोग्य, यश और स्वर्ग मिलते हैं।

सूत्रोंमें कही विधिसे स्नान करके विधिपूर्वक सन्ध्या करे। पहले ब्रह्मयज्ञ करके फिर तर्पण करे।
One should bathe by the rule the sūtras give and do the sandhyā prayer as the rule says. First one performs the brahmayajña. Then one should do the water offering.

पूरा फल पानेके लिये वेदमें कही विधिसे भली-भाँति परम भक्तिसे उत्तम पार्थिव लिंगकी पूजा करे।

विप्रके लिये सफेद मिट्टी कही गयी है और भुजाओंसे जन्मे पुरुषके लिये लाल। वैश्यके लिये पीली और चरणोंसे जन्मे पुरुषके लिये काली। अथवा जहाँ जो मिट्टी मिल जाय, वही ले।

Thus ends the twentieth chapter, called "The Account of the Rite for Worshipping the Earthen Śiva-Liṅga," in the section on the goal and the means, in the first, the Vidyeśvara Saṃhitā, of the glorious Śiva Mahāpurāṇa.
