कोऽसि त्वं कुत आयातः (ko'si tvaṃ kuta āyātaḥ) — "who are you, whence have you come,"who are you, whence have you come,·किं वा त्वं च चिकीर्षसि (kiṃ vā tvaṃ ca cikīrṣasi) — or what is it you intend to do?or what is it you intend to do?·इतोऽद्य गच्छ दूरं वै (ito'dya gaccha dūraṃ vai) — go far away from here today,go far away from here today,·यदि जीवितुमिच्छसि (yadi jīvitumicchasi) — if you wish to live"if you wish to live"

तदीयं तद्वचः श्रुत्वा (tadīyaṃ tadvacaḥ śrutvā) — having heard that word of theirshaving heard that word of theirs·गिरिजातनयः स वै (girijātanayaḥ sa vai) — he, the son of Girijā,he, the son of Girijā,·निर्भयो दण्डपाणिश्च (nirbhayo daṇḍapāṇiśca) — fearless, staff in hand,fearless, staff in hand,·द्वारपानब्रवीदिदम् (dvārapānabravīdidam) — said this to the door-guards [gaṇas]said this to the door-guards [gaṇas]

यूयं के कुत आयाता (yūyaṃ ke kuta āyātā) — "who are you, whence have you come,"who are you, whence have you come,·भवन्तः सुन्दरा इमे (bhavantaḥ sundarā ime) — you gentlemen, so fine-looking?you gentlemen, so fine-looking?·यात दूरं किमर्थं वै (yāta dūraṃ kimarthaṃ vai) — go far away — why is itgo far away — why is it·स्थिता अत्र विरोधिनः (sthitā atra virodhinaḥ) — you stand here as adversaries?"you stand here as adversaries?"

एवं श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य (evaṃ śrutvā vacastasya) — thus having heard his wordthus having heard his word·हास्यं कृत्वा परस्परम् (hāsyaṃ kṛtvā parasparam) — and laughing with one anotherand laughing with one another·ऊचुःसर्वे शिवगणा (ūcuḥsarve śivagaṇā) — all the gaṇas of Śiva saidall the gaṇas of Śiva said·महावीरा गतस्मयाः (mahāvīrā gatasmayāḥ) — [being] great heroes, their astonishment past[being] great heroes, their astonishment past

परस्परमिति प्रोच्य (parasparamiti procya) — having said this to one another,having said this to one another,·सर्वे ते शिवपार्षदाः (sarve te śivapārṣadāḥ) — all those attendants of Śivaall those attendants of Śiva·द्वारपालं गणेशं तं (dvārapālaṃ gaṇeśaṃ taṃ) — to that door-guard Gaṇeśato that door-guard Gaṇeśa·प्रत्यूचुः क्रुद्धमानसाः (pratyūcuḥ kruddhamānasāḥ) — replied, their minds now angeredreplied, their minds now angered

श्रूयतां द्वारपाला हि (śrūyatāṃ dvārapālā hi) — "listen: the door-guards, indeed,"listen: the door-guards, indeed,·वयं शिवगणा वराः (vayaṃ śivagaṇā varāḥ) — are we, the excellent gaṇas of Śivaare we, the excellent gaṇas of Śiva·त्वां निवारयितुं प्राप्ताः (tvāṃ nivārayituṃ prāptāḥ) — we have come to remove youwe have come to remove you·शङ्करस्याज्ञया विभोः (śaṅkarasyājñayā vibhoḥ) — by the order of Śaṅkara, the mighty lord"by the order of Śaṅkara, the mighty lord"

त्वामपीह गणं मत्वा (tvāmapīha gaṇaṃ matvā) — "taking you too to be a gaṇa here,"taking you too to be a gaṇa here,·न हन्यामोऽन्यथा हतः (na hanyāmo'nyathā hataḥ) — we do not slay you — otherwise you would be slainwe do not slay you — otherwise you would be slain·तिष्ठ दूरे स्वतः त्वं च (tiṣṭha dūre svataḥ tvaṃ ca) — stand aside yourself, at a distance,stand aside yourself, at a distance,·किमर्थं मृत्युमीहसे (kimarthaṃ mṛtyumīhase) — why do you court death?"why do you court death?"

इत्युक्तोऽपि गणेशश्च (ityukto'pi gaṇeśaśca) — though thus addressed, Gaṇeśa,though thus addressed, Gaṇeśa,·गिरिजातनयोऽभयः (girijātanayo'bhayaḥ) — Girijā's son, undaunted,Girijā's son, undaunted,·निर्भर्त्स्य शङ्करगणान् (nirbhartsya śaṅkaragaṇān) — having rebuked Śaṅkara's gaṇas,having rebuked Śaṅkara's gaṇas,·न द्वारं मुक्तवांस्तदा (na dvāraṃ muktavāṃstadā) — then did not release the doorthen did not release the door

ते सर्वेऽपि गणाः शैवाः (te sarve'pi gaṇāḥ śaivāḥ) — all those gaṇas of Śiva, present there,all those gaṇas of Śiva, present there,·तत्रत्या वचनं तदा (tatratyā vacanaṃ tadā) — having heard his wordhaving heard his word·श्रुत्वा तत्र शिवं गत्वा (śrutvā tatra śivaṃ gatvā) — then went there to Śivathen went there to Śiva·तद्वृत्तान्तमथाब्रुवन् (tadvṛttāntamathābruvan) — and then told him that whole affairand then told him that whole affair

ततश्च तद्वचः श्रुत्वा (tataśca tadvacaḥ śrutvā) — and then, having heard that word,and then, having heard that word,·अद्भुतलीलो महेश्वरः (adbhutalīlo maheśvaraḥ) — Maheśvara, of wondrous play,Maheśvara, of wondrous play,·विनिर्भर्त्स्य गणानूचे (vinirbhartsya gaṇānūce) — having rebuked his gaṇas, said [this]having rebuked his gaṇas, said [this]·निजाँल्लोकगतिर्मुने (nijā~llokagatirmune) — to his own [gaṇas], adopting a worldly manner, O sageto his own [gaṇas], adopting a worldly manner, O sage

कश्चायं वर्तते किं च (kaścāyaṃ vartate kiṃ ca) — "who is this, and what does he"who is this, and what does he·ब्रवीत्यरिवदुच्छ्रितः (bravītyarivaducchritaḥ) — say, so insolent, like an enemy?say, so insolent, like an enemy?·किं करिष्यत्यसद्बुद्धिः (kiṃ kariṣyatyasadbuddhiḥ) — what will this ill-minded one do?what will this ill-minded one do?·स्वमृत्युं वाञ्छति ध्रुवम् (svamṛtyuṃ vāñchati dhruvam) — he surely desires his own death"he surely desires his own death"

दूरतः क्रियतां ह्येष (dūrataḥ kriyatāṃ hyeṣa) — "let this one indeed be put far away —"let this one indeed be put far away —·द्वारपालो नवीनकः (dvārapālo navīnakaḥ) — this new door-guardthis new door-guard·क्लीबा इव स्थितास्तस्य (klībā iva sthitāstasya) — standing like impotent cowards over him,standing like impotent cowards over him,·वृत्तं वदथ मे कथम् (vṛttaṃ vadatha me katham) — why do you tell me his affair?"why do you tell me his affair?"

स्वामिनोक्ता गणास्ते (svāminoktā gaṇāste) — those gaṇas, addressed by their lord,those gaṇas, addressed by their lord,·च अद्भुतलीलेन शम्भुना (ca adbhutalīlena śambhunā) — Śambhu of wondrous play,Śambhu of wondrous play,·पुनरागत्य तत्रैव (punarāgatya tatraiva) — having come back to that very place,having come back to that very place,·तमूचुर्द्वारपालकम् (tamūcurdvārapālakam) — said this to that door-guardsaid this to that door-guard

रे रे द्वारप कस्त्वं हि (re re dvārapa kastvaṃ hi) — "hey, hey, door-keeper, who indeed are you,"hey, hey, door-keeper, who indeed are you,·स्थितश्च स्थापितः कुतः (sthitaśca sthāpitaḥ kutaḥ) — standing here — by whom were you stationed?standing here — by whom were you stationed?·नैवास्मान्गणयस्येवं (naivāsmāngaṇayasyevaṃ) — you thus pay us no regard at all —you thus pay us no regard at all —·कथं जीवितुमिच्छसि (kathaṃ jīvitumicchasi) — how do you wish to live?"how do you wish to live?"

द्वारपाला वयं सर्वे (dvārapālā vayaṃ sarve) — "the door-guards are, all of us,"the door-guards are, all of us,·स्थिताः किं परिभाषसे (sthitāḥ kiṃ paribhāṣase) — who stand here — why do you speak so [of yourself]?who stand here — why do you speak so [of yourself]?·सिंहासनगृहीतश्च (siṃhāsanagṛhītaśca) — a jackal, having seized a lion's throne,a jackal, having seized a lion's throne,·शृगालः शिवमीहते (śṛgālaḥ śivamīhate) — thereby seeks its own welfare — [can it]?"thereby seeks its own welfare — [can it]?"

तावद्गर्जसि मूर्ख त्वं (tāvadgarjasi mūrkha tvaṃ) — "you roar so, O fool, only so long"you roar so, O fool, only so long·यावद्गणपराक्रमः (yāvadgaṇaparākramaḥ) — as the might of the gaṇasas the might of the gaṇas·नानुभूतस्त्वयात्रैव (nānubhūtastvayātraiva) — has not yet been felt by you here;has not yet been felt by you here;·ह्यनुभूतः पतिष्यसि (hyanubhūtaḥ patiṣyasi) — once felt, you will fall"once felt, you will fall"

इत्युक्तस्तैस्सुसङ्क्रुद्धः (ityuktastaissusaṅkruddhaḥ) — thus addressed by them, greatly enraged,thus addressed by them, greatly enraged,·हस्ताभ्यां यष्टिकां तदा (hastābhyāṃ yaṣṭikāṃ tadā) — then, with both hands, his staffthen, with both hands, his staff·गृहीत्वा ताडयामास (gṛhītvā tāḍayāmāsa) — having seized, he began to strikehaving seized, he began to strike·गणांस्तान्परिभाषिणः (gaṇāṃstānparibhāṣiṇaḥ) — those reviling gaṇasthose reviling gaṇas

उवाचाथ शिवापुत्रः (uvācātha śivāputraḥ) — and then Śivā's son [Gaṇeśa] said,and then Śivā's son [Gaṇeśa] said,·परिभर्त्स्य गणेश्वरान् (paribhartsya gaṇeśvarān) — having thoroughly rebuked the lords of the gaṇas,having thoroughly rebuked the lords of the gaṇas,·शङ्करस्य महावीरान् (śaṅkarasya mahāvīrān) — those great heroes of Śaṅkara,those great heroes of Śaṅkara,·निर्भयस्तान्गणेश्वरः (nirbhayastāngaṇeśvaraḥ) — fearless, he, the lord of the gaṇasfearless, he, the lord of the gaṇas

यात यात इतो दूरे (yāta yāta ito dūre) — "go, go, far away from here,"go, go, far away from here,·नो चेद्वो दर्शयामि ह (no cedvo darśayāmi ha) — or else I shall show youor else I shall show you·स्वपराक्रममत्युग्रं (svaparākramamatyugraṃ) — my own most fierce prowess,my own most fierce prowess,·यास्यथात्युपहास्यताम् (yāsyathātyupahāsyatām) — and you will become utterly ridiculous"and you will become utterly ridiculous"

इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य (ityākarṇya vacastasya) — having heard this word of his,having heard this word of his,·गिरिजातनयस्य हि (girijātanayasya hi) — of Girijā's son indeed,of Girijā's son indeed,·परस्परमथोचुस्ते (parasparamathocuste) — they then said to one another,they then said to one another,·शङ्करस्य गणास्तदा (śaṅkarasya gaṇāstadā) — those gaṇas of Śaṅkara, thenthose gaṇas of Śaṅkara, then

किं कर्तव्यं क्व गन्तव्यं (kiṃ kartavyaṃ kva gantavyaṃ) — "what is to be done, where are we to go —"what is to be done, where are we to go —·क्रियते स न किं पुनः (kriyate sa na kiṃ punaḥ) — why then does he not act accordingly?why then does he not act accordingly?·मर्यादा रक्ष्यतेऽस्माभिः (maryādā rakṣyate'smābhiḥ) — propriety is what we uphold —propriety is what we uphold —·अन्यथा किं ब्रवीति च (anyathā kiṃ bravīti ca) — why then does he speak otherwise?"why then does he speak otherwise?"

ततः शम्भुगणाःसर्वे (tataḥ śambhugaṇāḥsarve) — then all of Śambhu's gaṇas,then all of Śambhu's gaṇas,·शिवं दूरे व्यवस्थितम् (śivaṃ dūre vyavasthitam) — to Śiva, stationed at a distance,to Śiva, stationed at a distance,·क्रोशमात्रं तु कैलासाद्गत्वा (krośamātraṃ tu kailāsādgatvā) — having gone a mere krośa [about two miles] from Kailāsa,having gone a mere krośa [about two miles] from Kailāsa,·ते च तथाऽब्रुवन् (te ca tathā'bruvan) — they spoke accordinglythey spoke accordingly

शिवो विहस्य तान्सर्वान् (śivo vihasya tānsarvān) — Śiva, having laughed at them all,Śiva, having laughed at them all,·त्रिशूलकर उग्रधीः (triśūlakara ugradhīḥ) — trident in hand, fierce of intent,trident in hand, fierce of intent,·उवाच परमेशो हि (uvāca parameśo hi) — the Supreme Lord indeed spokethe Supreme Lord indeed spoke·स्वगणान् वीरसम्मतान् (svagaṇān vīrasammatān) — to his own gaṇas, esteemed as heroesto his own gaṇas, esteemed as heroes

रे रे गणाः क्लीबमता (re re gaṇāḥ klībamatā) — "hey, hey, gaṇas, cowardly-minded,"hey, hey, gaṇas, cowardly-minded,·न वीरा वीरमानिनः (na vīrā vīramāninaḥ) — not heroes, though thinking yourselves heroes —not heroes, though thinking yourselves heroes —·मदग्रे नोदितुं योग्या (madagre nodituṃ yogyā) — fit to speak before me?fit to speak before me?·भर्त्सितः किं पुनर्वदेत् (bhartsitaḥ kiṃ punarvadet) — what indeed can one already rebuked say back?"what indeed can one already rebuked say back?"

गम्यतां ताड्यतां चैष (gamyatāṃ tāḍyatāṃ caiṣa) — "go, and let this one be struck,"go, and let this one be struck,·यः कश्चित्प्रभवेदिह (yaḥ kaścitprabhavediha) — whoever he may prove to be here;whoever he may prove to be here;·बहुनोक्तेन किं चात्र (bahunoktena kiṃ cātra) — what use is much talk about this?what use is much talk about this?·दूरीकर्तव्य एव सः (dūrīkartavya eva saḥ) — he is simply to be driven off"he is simply to be driven off"

इति सर्वे महेशेन (iti sarve maheśena) — thus, by Maheśa,thus, by Maheśa,·जग्मुस्तत्र मुनीश्वर (jagmustatra munīśvara) — [all] went there, O lord of sages,[all] went there, O lord of sages,·भर्त्सितास्तेन देवेन (bhartsitāstena devena) — rebuked by that god,rebuked by that god,·प्रोचुश्च गणसत्तमाः (procuśca gaṇasattamāḥ) — and the best of the gaṇas spokeand the best of the gaṇas spoke

रेरे त्वं शृणु वै बाल (rere tvaṃ śṛṇu vai bāla) — "hey, hey, listen, O boy —"hey, hey, listen, O boy —·बलात्किं परिभाषसे (balātkiṃ paribhāṣase) — why do you talk back so forcibly?why do you talk back so forcibly?·इतस्त्वं दूरतो याहि (itastvaṃ dūrato yāhi) — go far away from here,go far away from here,·नो चेन्मृत्युर्भविष्यति (no cenmṛtyurbhaviṣyati) — or else death will be your lot"or else death will be your lot"

इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तेषां (iti śrutvā vacasteṣāṃ) — having heard this word of theirs,having heard this word of theirs,·शिवाज्ञाकारिणां ध्रुवम् (śivājñākāriṇāṃ dhruvam) — [theirs] who surely do Śiva's bidding,[theirs] who surely do Śiva's bidding,·शिवासुतस्तदाभूत्स (śivāsutastadābhūtsa) — Śivā's son then became,Śivā's son then became,·किं करोमीति दुःखितः (kiṃ karomīti duḥkhitaḥ) — "what shall I do?" — distressed"what shall I do?" — distressed

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे देवी (etasminnantare devī) — meanwhile, the goddess,meanwhile, the goddess,·तेषां तस्य च वै पुनः (teṣāṃ tasya ca vai punaḥ) — of theirs and of him, once againof theirs and of him, once again·श्रुत्वा तु कलहं द्वारि (śrutvā tu kalahaṃ dvāri) — having heard the quarrel at the door,having heard the quarrel at the door,·सखीं पश्येति साब्रवीत् (sakhīṃ paśyeti sābravīt) — said to her friend, "go see"said to her friend, "go see"

समागत्य सखी तत्र (samāgatya sakhī tatra) — having come there, the friendhaving come there, the friend·वृत्तान्तं समबुध्यत (vṛttāntaṃ samabudhyata) — fully understood the whole affairfully understood the whole affair·क्षणमात्रं तदा दृष्ट्वा (kṣaṇamātraṃ tadā dṛṣṭvā) — having watched it there for just a moment,having watched it there for just a moment,·गता हृष्टा शिवान्तिकम् (gatā hṛṣṭā śivāntikam) — she went, pleased, to Śivā's sideshe went, pleased, to Śivā's side

तत्र गत्वा तु तत्सर्वं (tatra gatvā tu tatsarvaṃ) — having gone there, all of thathaving gone there, all of that·वृत्तं तद्यदभून्मुने (vṛttaṃ tadyadabhūnmune) — affair, whatever had occurred, O sage,affair, whatever had occurred, O sage,·अशेषेण तया सख्या (aśeṣeṇa tayā sakhyā) — in full, by that friend,in full, by that friend,·कथितं गिरिजाग्रतः (kathitaṃ girijāgrataḥ) — was told before Girijāwas told before Girijā

अस्मदीयो गणो यो हि (asmadīyo gaṇo yo hi) — "our own gaṇa, who indeed"our own gaṇa, who indeed·स्थितो द्वारि महेश्वरि (sthito dvāri maheśvari) — stands at the door, O great goddess,stands at the door, O great goddess,·निर्भर्त्सयन्ति तं वीराः (nirbhartsayanti taṃ vīrāḥ) — him the heroichim the heroic·शङ्करस्य गणा ध्रुवम् (śaṅkarasya gaṇā dhruvam) — gaṇas of Śaṅkara are certainly rebuking"gaṇas of Śaṅkara are certainly rebuking"

शिवश्चैव गणाः सर्वे (śivaścaiva gaṇāḥ sarve) — "Śiva and all his gaṇas —"Śiva and all his gaṇas —·विना तेऽवसरं कथम् (vinā te'vasaraṃ katham) — how, without your leave,how, without your leave,·प्रविशन्ति हठाद्गेहे (praviśanti haṭhādgehe) — can they force their way into the house?can they force their way into the house?·नैतच्छुभतरं तव (naitacchubhataraṃ tava) — this is not more auspicious for you"this is not more auspicious for you"

सम्यक् कृतं ह्यनेनैव (samyak kṛtaṃ hyanenaiva) — "well indeed has this one [the door-guard] done,"well indeed has this one [the door-guard] done,·न हि कोऽपि प्रवेशितः (na hi ko'pi praveśitaḥ) — in that no one at all has been let in,in that no one at all has been let in,·दुःखं चैवानुभूयात्र (duḥkhaṃ caivānubhūyātra) — though he has suffered distress in this,though he has suffered distress in this,·तिरस्कारादिकं तथा (tiraskārādikaṃ tathā) — and insult and the like as well"and insult and the like as well"

अतः परन्तु वाग्वादः (ataḥ parantu vāgvādaḥ) — "but hereafter, a dispute of words"but hereafter, a dispute of words·क्रियते च परस्परम् (kriyate ca parasparam) — is being carried on between them;is being carried on between them;·वाग्वादे च कृते नैव (vāgvāde ca kṛte naiva) — and once a dispute of words has arisen,and once a dispute of words has arisen,·तर्ह्यायान्तु सुखेन वै (tarhyāyāntu sukhena vai) — they can no longer enter peaceably"they can no longer enter peaceably"

कृतश्चैवात्र वाग्वादः (kṛtaścaivātra vāgvādaḥ) — "since a dispute of words has indeed arisen here,"since a dispute of words has indeed arisen here,·तं जित्वा विजयेन च (taṃ jitvā vijayena ca) — only having defeated him and won victoryonly having defeated him and won victory·प्रविशन्तु तथा सर्वे (praviśantu tathā sarve) — may all of them thus enter,may all of them thus enter,·नान्यथा कर्हिचित्प्रिये (nānyathā karhicitpriye) — never otherwise, O dear one"never otherwise, O dear one"

अस्मिन्नेवास्मदीये वै (asminnevāsmadīye vai) — "in this very [gaṇa] of ours indeed,"in this very [gaṇa] of ours indeed,·सर्वे सम्भर्त्सिता वयम् (sarve sambhartsitā vayam) — all of us have been rebuked;all of us have been rebuked;·तस्माद्देवि त्वया भद्रे (tasmāddevi tvayā bhadre) — therefore, O goddess, O gracious one, by youtherefore, O goddess, O gracious one, by you·न त्याज्यो मान उत्तमः (na tyājyo māna uttamaḥ) — your own high honour should not be abandoned"your own high honour should not be abandoned"

शिवो मर्कटवत्तेऽद्य (śivo markaṭavatte'dya) — "Śiva today, like a tame monkey,"Śiva today, like a tame monkey,·वर्तते सर्वदा सति (vartate sarvadā sati) — ever remains subject to you, O virtuous one;ever remains subject to you, O virtuous one;·किं करिष्यत्यहङ्कारम् (kiṃ kariṣyatyahaṅkāram) — what pride will he assert?what pride will he assert?·आनुकूल्यं भविष्यति (ānukūlyaṃ bhaviṣyati) — [he] will surely become favourable [to you]"[he] will surely become favourable [to you]"

अहो क्षणं (aho kṣaṇaṃ) — ah, for a moment,ah, for a moment,·स्थिता तत्र (sthitā tatra) — she paused there,she paused there,·शिवेच्छा वशतः (śivecchā vaśataḥ) — under the sway of Śiva's will,under the sway of Śiva's will,·सती (satī) — the virtuous one [Pārvatī]the virtuous one [Pārvatī]

मनस्युवाच सा (manasyuvāca sā) — she spoke in her own mind,she spoke in her own mind,·भूत्वा मानिनी (bhūtvā māninī) — having become proud,having become proud,·पार्वती (pārvatī) — Pārvatī,Pārvatī,·तदा (tadā) — thenthen

अहो क्षणं स्थितो नैव (aho kṣaṇaṃ sthito naiva) — "ah, he did not pause even a moment —"ah, he did not pause even a moment —·हठात्कारः कथं कृतः (haṭhātkāraḥ kathaṃ kṛtaḥ) — how has this forcing been done?how has this forcing been done?·कथं चैवात्र कर्त्तव्यं (kathaṃ caivātra karttavyaṃ) — and how should this now be handled —and how should this now be handled —·विनयेनाथ वा पुनः (vinayenātha vā punaḥ) — with courtesy, or otherwise?"with courtesy, or otherwise?"

भविष्यति भवत्येव (bhaviṣyati bhavatyeva) — "whatever will be will indeed be —"whatever will be will indeed be —·कृतं नैवान्यथा पुनः (kṛtaṃ naivānyathā punaḥ) — what has been done cannot again be otherwise"what has been done cannot again be otherwise"·इत्युक्त्वा तु सखी तत्र (ityuktvā tu sakhī tatra) — having said this, the friend therehaving said this, the friend there·प्रेषिता प्रियया तदा (preṣitā priyayā tadā) — was then sent by the beloved [Pārvatī]was then sent by the beloved [Pārvatī]

समागत्याऽब्रवीत्सा च (samāgatyā'bravītsā ca) — having come, she then toldhaving come, she then told·प्रियया कथितं हि यत् (priyayā kathitaṃ hi yat) — whatever had indeed been told by the beloved [Pārvatī],whatever had indeed been told by the beloved [Pārvatī],·समाचष्ट गणेशं तं (samācaṣṭa gaṇeśaṃ taṃ) — she related it to that Gaṇeśa,she related it to that Gaṇeśa,·गिरिजातनयं तदा (girijātanayaṃ tadā) — Girijā's son, at that timeGirijā's son, at that time

सम्यक्कृतं त्वया भद्र (samyakkṛtaṃ tvayā bhadra) — "well done by you, O good one —"well done by you, O good one —·बलात्ते प्रविशन्तु न (balātte praviśantu na) — let them not enter by force;let them not enter by force;·भवदग्रे गणा ह्येते (bhavadagre gaṇā hyete) — before you, indeed, what are these gaṇas —before you, indeed, what are these gaṇas —·किं जयन्तु भवादृशम् (kiṃ jayantu bhavādṛśam) — could they conquer one such as you?"could they conquer one such as you?"

कृतं चेद्वाकृतं चैव (kṛtaṃ cedvākṛtaṃ caiva) — "be it done or undone,"be it done or undone,·कर्त्तव्यं क्रियतां त्वया (karttavyaṃ kriyatāṃ tvayā) — let what must be done be done by you;let what must be done be done by you;·जितो यस्तु पुनर्वापि (jito yastu punarvāpi) — for whoever is once defeated,for whoever is once defeated,·न वैरमथ वा ध्रुवम् (na vairamatha vā dhruvam) — will surely bear no [further] enmity"will surely bear no [further] enmity"

इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्या (iti śrutvā vacastasyā) — having heard this word of hers,having heard this word of hers,·मातुश्चैव गणेश्वरः (mātuścaiva gaṇeśvaraḥ) — his mother's, Gaṇeśvara [Gaṇeśa]his mother's, Gaṇeśvara [Gaṇeśa]·आनन्दं परमं प्राप (ānandaṃ paramaṃ prāpa) — attained supreme joy,attained supreme joy,·बलं भूरि महोन्नतिम् (balaṃ bhūri mahonnatim) — abundant strength, and great exaltationabundant strength, and great exaltation

बद्धकक्षस्तथोष्णीषं (baddhakakṣastathoṣṇīṣaṃ) — his waist-cloth bound, and likewise his turbanhis waist-cloth bound, and likewise his turban·बद्ध्वा जङ्घोरु संस्पृशन् (baddhvā jaṅghoru saṃspṛśan) — having tied, slapping his shins and thighs,having tied, slapping his shins and thighs,·उवाच तान् गणान् सर्वान् (uvāca tān gaṇān sarvān) — he spoke to all those gaṇashe spoke to all those gaṇas·निर्भयं वचनं मुदा (nirbhayaṃ vacanaṃ mudā) — a fearless word, with joya fearless word, with joy

अहं च गिरिजासूनुः (ahaṃ ca girijāsūnuḥ) — "I am Girijā's son,"I am Girijā's son,·यूयं शिवगणास्तथा (yūyaṃ śivagaṇāstathā) — and you likewise are Śiva's gaṇas;and you likewise are Śiva's gaṇas;·उभये समतां प्राप्ताः (ubhaye samatāṃ prāptāḥ) — both of us stand on equal footing —both of us stand on equal footing —·कर्तव्यं क्रियतां पुनः (kartavyaṃ kriyatāṃ punaḥ) — let each, then, do his own duty"let each, then, do his own duty"

भवन्तो द्वारपालाश्च (bhavanto dvārapālāśca) — "you gentlemen are door-guards —"you gentlemen are door-guards —·द्वारपोऽहं कथं न हि (dvārapo'haṃ kathaṃ na hi) — why then am I not a door-guard too?why then am I not a door-guard too?·भवन्तश्च स्थितास्तत्रा (bhavantaśca sthitāstatrā) — you stand there,you stand there,·अहं स्थितोऽत्रेति निश्चितम् (ahaṃ sthito'treti niścitam) — I stand here — this is certain"I stand here — this is certain"

भवद्भिश्च स्थितं ह्यत्र (bhavadbhiśca sthitaṃ hyatra) — "and when your remaining here"and when your remaining here·यदा भवति निश्चितम् (yadā bhavati niścitam) — is a settled thing,is a settled thing,·तदा भवद्भिः कर्त्तव्यं (tadā bhavadbhiḥ karttavyaṃ) — then it is your duty tothen it is your duty to·शिवाज्ञापरिपालनम् (śivājñāparipālanam) — faithfully carry out Śiva's command"faithfully carry out Śiva's command"

इदानीं तु मया चात्र (idānīṃ tu mayā cātra) — "even now, indeed, here by me,"even now, indeed, here by me,·शिवाज्ञापरिपालनम् (śivājñāparipālanam) — the command of Śivāthe command of Śivā·सत्यं च क्रियते वीराः (satyaṃ ca kriyate vīrāḥ) — is truly being carried out, O heroes —is truly being carried out, O heroes —·निर्णीतं मे यथोचितम् (nirṇītaṃ me yathocitam) — this is my own proper, considered resolve"this is my own proper, considered resolve"

तस्माच्छिवगणाःसर्वे (tasmācchivagaṇāḥsarve) — "therefore, O all you gaṇas of Śiva,"therefore, O all you gaṇas of Śiva,·वचनं शृणुतादरात् (vacanaṃ śṛṇutādarāt) — hear my word with respect:hear my word with respect:·हठाद्वा विनयाद्वा (haṭhādvā vinayādvā) — whether by force or by courtesy,whether by force or by courtesy,·न गन्तव्यं मन्दिरे पुनः (na gantavyaṃ mandire punaḥ) — you shall not go into the house again"you shall not go into the house again"

इत्युक्तास्ते गणेनैव (ityuktāste gaṇenaiva) — thus addressed by that very gaṇa,thus addressed by that very gaṇa,·सर्वे ते लज्जिता गणाः (sarve te lajjitā gaṇāḥ) — all those gaṇas, ashamed,all those gaṇas, ashamed,·ययुः शिवान्तिकं तं वै (yayuḥ śivāntikaṃ taṃ vai) — went to that Śiva's presence,went to that Śiva's presence,·नमस्कृत्य पुरः स्थिताः (namaskṛtya puraḥ sthitāḥ) — and, having bowed, stood before himand, having bowed, stood before him

स्थित्वा न्यवेदयन्सर्वे (sthitvā nyavedayansarve) — standing there, all of them reportedstanding there, all of them reported·वृत्तान्तं च तदद्भुतम् (vṛttāntaṃ ca tadadbhutam) — that whole wondrous affair;that whole wondrous affair;·करौ बद्ध्वा नतस्कन्धाः (karau baddhvā nataskandhāḥ) — hands joined, shoulders bowed,hands joined, shoulders bowed,·शिवं स्तुत्वा पुरः स्थिताः (śivaṃ stutvā puraḥ sthitāḥ) — they praised Śiva and stood before himthey praised Śiva and stood before him

तत्सर्वं तु तदा श्रुत्वा (tatsarvaṃ tu tadā śrutvā) — having then heard all of thathaving then heard all of that·वृत्तं तत्स्वगणोदितम् (vṛttaṃ tatsvagaṇoditam) — affair, told by his own gaṇas,affair, told by his own gaṇas,·लौकिकीं वृत्तिमाश्रित्य (laukikīṃ vṛttimāśritya) — adopting a worldly manner,adopting a worldly manner,·शङ्करो वाक्यमब्रवीत् (śaṅkaro vākyamabravīt) — Śaṅkara spoke this wordŚaṅkara spoke this word

श्रूयतां च गणाःसर्वे (śrūyatāṃ ca gaṇāḥsarve) — "listen, all you gaṇas —"listen, all you gaṇas —·युद्धं योग्यं भवेन्न हि (yuddhaṃ yogyaṃ bhavenna hi) — battle would indeed not be fitting,battle would indeed not be fitting,·यूयं चात्रास्मदीया वै (yūyaṃ cātrāsmadīyā vai) — for you here are indeed my own,for you here are indeed my own,·स च गौरीगणस्तथा (sa ca gaurīgaṇastathā) — and he likewise is Gaurī's gaṇa"and he likewise is Gaurī's gaṇa"

विनयः क्रियते चेद्वै (vinayaḥ kriyate cedvai) — "if indeed deference is shown,"if indeed deference is shown,·वश्यः शम्भुः स्त्रिया सदा (vaśyaḥ śambhuḥ striyā sadā) — that Śambhu is ever ruled by a woman —that Śambhu is ever ruled by a woman —·इति ख्यातिर्भवेल्लोके (iti khyātirbhavelloke) — such would be the report in the world,such would be the report in the world,·गर्हिता मे गणा ध्रुवम् (garhitā me gaṇā dhruvam) — O gaṇas, surely a disgraceful one for me"O gaṇas, surely a disgraceful one for me"

कृते चैवात्र कर्तव्यम् (kṛte caivātra kartavyam) — "as one is treated, so must one be treated —"as one is treated, so must one be treated —·इति नीतिर्गरीयसी (iti nītirgarīyasī) — this is the weightiest policy;this is the weightiest policy;·एकाकी स गणो बालः (ekākī sa gaṇo bālaḥ) — that solitary boy-gaṇa —that solitary boy-gaṇa —·किं करिष्यति विक्रमम् (kiṃ kariṣyati vikramam) — what feat of valour will he achieve?"what feat of valour will he achieve?"

भवन्तश्च गणा लोके (bhavantaśca gaṇā loke) — "and you gaṇas in the world"and you gaṇas in the world·युद्धे चाति विशारदाः (yuddhe cāti viśāradāḥ) — are most expert in battle;are most expert in battle;·मदीयाश्च कथं युद्धं (madīyāśca kathaṃ yuddhaṃ) — being mine, how, having abandoned battle,being mine, how, having abandoned battle,·हित्वा यास्यथ लाघवम् (hitvā yāsyatha lāghavam) — will you fall into disgrace?"will you fall into disgrace?"

स्त्रियाऽऽग्रहः कथं कार्यो (striyā'grahaḥ kathaṃ kāryo) — "how should a woman's stubbornness be shown,"how should a woman's stubbornness be shown,·पत्युरग्रे विशेषतः (patyuragre viśeṣataḥ) — especially before her husband?especially before her husband?·कृत्वा सा गिरिजा तस्य (kṛtvā sā girijā tasya) — having shown it, that Girijā, of it,having shown it, that Girijā, of it,·नूनं फलमवाप्स्यति (nūnaṃ phalamavāpsyati) — will surely obtain the fruit"will surely obtain the fruit"
