Sūta tells the sages that, having heard the wondrous account of Kārtikeya, Nārada, well pleased, asked Brahmā to relate the equally auspicious story of Gaṇeśa's birth. Brahmā begins by noting that, by a difference of kalpa, Gaṇeśa's birth is told even earlier than his own — in that account his head was severed by the glance of Śani and an elephant's head was joined on in its place — but here he will recount the version belonging to the Śveta-kalpa, in which the beheading is done by the compassionate Śiva himself, an act not to be doubted since Śiva, sarvādhipa and both saguṇa and nirguṇa, creates, sustains, and destroys the universe by his own play. Some time after Śiva's marriage and return to Kailāsa, Pārvatī's friends Jayā and Vijayā pointed out to her that, although Rudra's countless gaṇas led by Nandī and Bhṛṅgī were nominally hers too, they were wholly devoted to Śiva's command alone, and urged her to fashion an attendant who would be truly her own; Pārvatī took this to heart, an impression only strengthened when Śiva, on one occasion, brushed past a rebuked Nandī and walked in on her unannounced while she bathed, leaving her flustered. Resolving that she needed a servant who would move only at her own command, Pārvatī later fashioned from the impurities of her own body a flawless, radiant, and mighty young man; having adorned him with garments, ornaments, and blessings and declared him her very own son, she accepted his offer of service by naming him her door-guard, arming him with a staff, and stationing him — now called Gaṇeśa — at her door with strict orders to admit no one without her leave, before going in to bathe with her friends. Śiva then arrived at that very door, and Gaṇeśa, not recognizing him, refused him entry, insisting his mother was bathing and raising his staff to block him; when Śiva, amused but firm, identified himself as the very lord of the house and tried to pass, Gaṇeśa struck him with the staff, provoking Śiva to identify himself again and be struck a second time as he pressed forward, at which point the now-enraged Śiva, halted just outside his own door, called upon his gaṇas to see who this was and settle the matter — setting up the confrontation that continues into the next chapter.

"You are a fool; you do not know that I am Śiva, the lord of Girijā. I am going to my own house, O child; why then do you forbid me?"
