Brahmā continues the account: rebuked by Śiva, the gaṇas resolved on war and, armed for battle, advanced upon Śiva's dwelling; seeing them come, Gaṇeśa readied himself and declared that, although he was but a boy obeying his mother Pārvatī's command, he would meet them, so that the strength of Bhavānī's side and of Śiva's gaṇas alike might be seen — adding that whatever befell, no one in the three worlds could avert it. The gaṇas advanced gnashing their teeth; Nandī seized one of Gaṇeśa's feet and Bhṛṅgī the other, but he shook them off with a single blow and, taking up a great iron club at the door, struck down the whole host, breaking limbs, backs, and skulls, until the survivors, comparing him to Kāla himself, fled by the thousands while he returned alone to his post. Drawn by Nārada, Viṣṇu and the other gods arrived and begged Śiva, as the one supreme, ever-creating and destroying lord beyond the guṇas, to explain what play he had now set in motion; Śiva, on seeing his wounded gaṇas, told Brahmā everything and, laughing, sent him to conciliate the boy. Brahmā went with a company of sages but, unrecognized, was seized by the beard; pleading that he was a harmless brāhmaṇa come in peace, he fled the moment Gaṇeśa raised his club, and those who lingered were struck down or driven off, while others ran to report the matter to Śiva, provoking him to boundless anger. Śiva then dispatched Indra and the gods, Kārtikeya (Ṣaṇmukha) and his gaṇas, and hosts of bhūtas, pretas, and piśācas with every weapon to slay the boy, but Gaṇeśa let loose their own missiles back upon them and threw the three worlds into an uproar of terror, so that all wondered how the universe could be perishing before its appointed hour. Seeing this, Pārvatī herself, enraged, created two Śaktis — one a fearsome, mountain-dark form with a gaping mouth, the other lightning-bright and many-armed — who swallowed every weapon hurled at Gaṇeśa, leaving only his club visible on the field; alone, the boy churned the vast army as Mandara once churned the ocean, felling Indra and all the immortals along with Śiva's own gaṇas, until, terrified and directionless before his whirling club, only Kārtikeya stood his ground while the rest of the gods and gaṇas fled to Śiva. Meanwhile apsarases and sages crowding the sky to watch declared they had never witnessed such a battle, as the earth shook, mountains fell, and the heavens themselves reeled; the two Śaktis rendered every weapon useless, and those still gathered around Śiva asked in wonder who this peerless gaṇa could be and begged him to think of some way to secure victory. Enraged in turn, Rudra set out with his own gaṇas, followed in festive procession by Viṣṇu and the entire army of the gods; and it was then that Nārada, bowing to Śiva with folded hands, praised him as the all-pervading, playful lord who had humbled the pride of both gaṇas and gods alike by empowering this boy, and urged him now to cease that display, honour his gaṇas and the gods, and put an end to the boy's resistance once and for all — after which Nārada vanished, setting the stage for the direct confrontation between Śiva, Viṣṇu, and Gaṇeśa in the following chapter.

ityuktā vibhunā tena niścayaṃ paramaṃ gatāḥ | sannaddhāstu tadā tatra jagmuśca śivamandiram 1 ||
Thus addressed by that all-pervading lord [Śiva], they [the gaṇas] arrived at a firm resolve; then, having armed themselves, they went there to Śiva's abode.

Gaṇeśa too, having thus seen the foremost gaṇas who had arrived, made a show of battle-preparation and spoke thus to them as they stood [before him].

āyāntu gaṇapāḥ sarve śivājñāparipālakāḥ | ahamekaśca bālaśca śivājñāparipālakaḥ 3 ||
"Let all the gaṇa-lords come, the upholders of Śiva's command; I too, though alone and a mere child, am an upholder of Śivā's [Pārvatī's] command."
Noteशिवाज्ञापरिपालकः occurs twice in this verse with identical spelling, but by sandhi it can resolve two different ways: the first, addressed to the gaṇas, as śiva-ājñā- ("Śiva's command"); the second, said by Gaṇeśa of himself, as śivā-ājñā- ("Śivā's command," Śivā being an epithet of his mother Pārvatī).
आयान्तु गणपाः सर्वे (āyāntu gaṇapāḥ sarve) — "let all the gaṇa-lords come,शिवाज्ञापरिपालकाः (śivājñāparipālakāḥ) — the upholders of Śiva's commandअहमेकश्च बालश्च (ahamekaśca bālaśca) — I too, though alone and a mere child,शिवाज्ञापरिपालकः (śivājñāparipālakaḥ) — am an upholder of Śivā's command"
tathāpi paśyatāṃ devī pārvatī sūnujaṃ balam | śivaśca svagaṇānāṃ tu balaṃ paśyatu vai punaḥ 4 ||
Yet today let the goddess Pārvatī watch the strength of [her] son, and let Śiva, too, again watch the strength of his own gaṇas.

A mighty battle of a child [will take place] between the sides of Bhavānī and Śiva; battle has indeed been waged by you before, O you skilled in war.

Battle was never waged by me before; being a child, I am doing it now. Yet the shame here [of defeat in this battle] will be yours, [as also] that of Girijā [Pārvatī] and Śiva.

mamaivaṃ tu bhavennaiva vaiparītyaṃ bhaviṣyati | mamaiva bhavatāṃ lajjā girijāśivayoriha 7 ||
For me it will surely not turn out otherwise [I will not suffer defeat]; the shame here, if it occurs, will be yours alone, [as also] that of Girijā and Śiva.

Knowing this, O lords of the gaṇas, let battle be waged: by you with regard to your Lord [Śiva], and by me, then, for my mother [Pārvatī].

Nandī, having come first, seized his foot and dragged [it]; and Bhṛṅgī, running up second, seized the other foot of the gaṇa [Gaṇeśa].

While the two of them were dragging at his feet, the gaṇa [Gaṇeśa], meanwhile, having struck with both his hands, himself freed his two feet.

Among them, indeed, not a single one stood facing him in that battle; just as deer, upon seeing a lion, flee in the ten directions.

Just as Kāla [Time] appears terrible at the ending of a kalpa, so too was he [Gaṇeśa] seen by all of them as one bringing about their destruction.

[I said:] "Forgive [me], forgive [me], O lord! I have not come for the sake of battle. I am a brāhmaṇa, deserving of grace, a peace-maker, doing no harm."

While I was thus speaking, O holy one [Nārada], that great hero Gaṇeśa, a child, [yet] of no child's valour, straightway took up his iron club.
Note"ब्रह्मन्" here is a generic honorific vocative ("O holy one") addressed by the narrator Brahmā to his listener Nārada, not a reference to the god Brahmā himself — parallel to Brahmā elsewhere in this chapter addressing Nārada as मुनिश्रेष्ठ (v.25), मुनिसत्तम (v.26), and मुनीश्वर (v.45).
इत्येवं ब्रुवति ब्रह्मन् (ityevaṃ bruvati brahman) — while I was thus speaking, O holy one [Nārada],स्तावत्परिघमाददे (stāvatparighamādade) — just then he took up [his] iron club —स गणेशो महावीरो (sa gaṇeśo mahāvīro) — that great hero Gaṇeśa,बालोऽबालपराक्रमः (bālo'bālaparākramaḥ) — a child, [yet] of no child's valour

Those [with me], crying, "Go, go!", were then struck by the club; some fell of their own accord, and some were felled by him.

He then commanded them all: the hosts of gods headed by Indra, the gaṇas led by Ṣaṇmukha [Kārtikeya], and the bhūtas, pretas, and piśācas.

All of them, as was fitting, commanded by Śiva and with weapons raised, went out in all directions, desiring to slay that gaṇa [Gaṇeśa].

Then, O lord of sages, a pair of Śaktis were created there by that goddess, to give her own gaṇa [Gaṇeśa] every kind of help.

ekā pracaṇḍarūpaṃ ca dhṛtvātiṣṭhanmahāmune | śyāmaparvatasaṅkāśaṃ vistīrya mukhagahvaram 46 ||
One, O great sage, having assumed a fierce form resembling a dark mountain, stood there with her mouth's cavern stretched wide.
NoteThe two Śaktis created by Pārvatī in vv.45-47 are described but not named in the received text; no name for either is supplied here or elsewhere in this chapter, so none is invented for them.

The other, of a form like lightning, endowed with many hands, was a terrible great goddess, the punisher of the wicked.

All the weapons loosed by the gods and gaṇas were quickly seized and cast into their [the two Śaktis'] mouths.

No weapon of the gods was to be seen anywhere; only the club [of Gaṇeśa] all around. Thus a most wondrous feat was performed there by those two [Śaktis].

[The hosts of the gods said:] "What is to be done? Where is one to go? The ten directions cannot even be told apart — this one whirls his club to the right and to the left alike!"

"Now, O Lord, who are affectionate to your devotees, do not carry on that play any further; honour well your own gaṇas and the immortals too, and let them prosper."
इदानीं न कुरुष्वेश (idānīṃ na kuruṣveśa) — "now do not carry on, O Lord,तां लीलां भक्तवत्सलः (tāṃ līlāṃ bhaktavatsalaḥ) — that play [any further], O you who are affectionate to your devotees;स्वगणानमरांश्चापि (svagaṇānamarāṃścāpi) — your own gaṇas and the immortals too —सुसन्मान्याभिवर्द्धय (susanmānyābhivarddhaya) — honour them well and let them prosper"
imaṃ na khelayedānīṃ jahi brahmapadaprada | ityuktvā nārada tvaṃ vai hyantarddhānaṃ gatastadā 72 ||
"Do not toy with this one [Gaṇeśa] any longer now — strike him down, O bestower of the state of Brahman [liberation]!" Having said this, O Nārada, you then vanished from sight.
Noteजहि (from √han, "to strike/smite/overcome") is rendered here as "strike him down" rather than only "kill," since Nārada's plea is that Śiva stop merely toying with and deferring the decisive resolution of the boy's resistance; this sets up the direct confrontation, and Gaṇeśa's eventual beheading by Śiva's trident, narrated in the following chapter.
इमं न खेलयेदानीं (imaṃ na khelayedānīṃ) — "do not toy with this one [Gaṇeśa] any longer now;जहि ब्रह्मपदप्रद (jahi brahmapadaprada) — strike him down, O bestower of the state of Brahman"इत्युक्त्वा नारद त्वं वै (ityuktvā nārada tvaṃ vai) — having said this, O Nārada, you indeedह्यन्तर्द्धानं गतस्तदा (hyantarddhānaṃ gatastadā) — then vanished from sight
Thus ends the fifteenth chapter, called "The Description of the Battle of Gaṇeśa," in the Kumāra-khaṇḍa of the fourth section of the second Rudra-saṃhitā, in the glorious Śiva Mahāpurāṇa.
