Chapter Sixteen · The Beheading of Gaṇeśa · Verses 1–37

Nārada's account continues: hearing of the confrontation at Pārvatī's door, Maheśāna, gracious to his devotees, became willing to fight the boy at Nārada's own urging. Śiva summoned Viṣṇu and, taking counsel with him, advanced with a great army; the gods who had earlier been touched by Śiva's own auspicious glance also joined the battle, remembering his feet, while Viṣṇu fought the boy directly. Wielding the staff given him by his mother, Gaṇeśa struck down the foremost gods and even Viṣṇu, blunting the strength of the entire host, until Śiva himself, astonished at the boy's ferocity after fighting long with his army, resolved that Gaṇeśa could only be slain by a stratagem and took up a position amid the troops. When Śiva and Viṣṇu together entered the field, the gods and Śiva's own gaṇas rejoiced and made festival; Gaṇeśa then struck Viṣṇu first with his staff. Viṣṇu, judging the boy tāmasic and unconquerable without guile, proposed to Śiva that he himself would bewilder Gaṇeśa while Śiva delivered the death-blow; with Śiva's leave, the śaktis earlier given to Hari and to Gaṇeśa both merged into Gaṇeśa, making him mightier still, and he hurled his iron mace at the very spot where Viṣṇu stood, though Viṣṇu, remembering Śiva, deflected its course. Seeing Gaṇeśa's face from one side, the enraged Śiva himself advanced with his trident to slay him; Gaṇeśa, remembering his mother's feet and empowered by her, struck the trident from Śiva's hand with his spear, so that Śiva took up his bow Pināka instead — which Gaṇeśa also felled, wounding several of Śiva's hands with his mace, leaving Śiva to marvel privately at what his gaṇas outside must be suffering. Gaṇeśa then routed the gods and their gaṇas in every direction with his mace, drawing Viṣṇu's open admiration as unequalled in splendour, valour, and strength in all the three worlds — even as Gaṇeśa hurled the same mace at him; Viṣṇu shattered it with his discus, remembering Śiva, and when Gaṇeśa flung a fragment at him too, Garuḍa seized it and rendered it harmless. The two great heroes fought on a long while, until Gaṇeśa struck Viṣṇu down with his staff; Viṣṇu, rising at once to renew the fight, gave Śiva the opening he needed — coming up from behind, Śiva severed Gaṇeśa's head with his trident, stilling both armies at once. Brahmā closes by recalling that Nārada himself then went and told the goddess everything, urging her, "do not now abandon your pride," before vanishing — Nārada, ever fond of strife, moving always at the unchanging Śambhu's own hidden intent.
