श्रूयतां मुनिशार्दूल (śrūyatāṃ muniśārdūla) — "listen, O tiger among sages;"listen, O tiger among sages;·कथयाम्यद्य तद्ध्रुवम् (kathayāmyadya taddhruvam) — I shall now tell it exactly as it isI shall now tell it exactly as it is·चरितं जगदम्बाया (caritaṃ jagadambāyā) — the deed of the Mother of the universethe deed of the Mother of the universe·यज्जातं तदनन्तरम् (yajjātaṃ tadanantaram) — that came to pass right after that"that came to pass right after that"

मृदङ्गान्पटहांश्चैव (mṛdaṅgānpaṭahāṃścaiva) — mṛdaṅgas and drumsmṛdaṅgas and drums·गणाश्चावादयंस्तथा (gaṇāścāvādayaṃstathā) — the gaṇas likewise soundedthe gaṇas likewise sounded·महोत्सवं तदा चक्रुः (mahotsavaṃ tadā cakruḥ) — and then held a great celebrationand then held a great celebration·हते तस्मिन्गणाधिपे (hate tasmingaṇādhipe) — once that lord of the gaṇas had been slainonce that lord of the gaṇas had been slain

शिवोऽपि तच्छिरश्छित्वा (śivo'pi tacchiraśchitvā) — Śiva too, having severed that head,Śiva too, having severed that head,·यावद्दुःखमुपाददे (yāvadduḥkhamupādade) — was, at that very time, overcome by griefwas, at that very time, overcome by grief·तावच्च गिरिजा देवी (tāvacca girijā devī) — and at that same moment the goddess Girijāand at that same moment the goddess Girijā·चुक्रोधाति मुनीश्वर (cukrodhāti munīśvara) — became extremely enraged, O lord of sagesbecame extremely enraged, O lord of sages

किं करोमि क्व गच्छामि (kiṃ karomi kva gacchāmi) — [she cried:] "what shall I do, where shall I go?[she cried:] "what shall I do, where shall I go?·हाहा दुःखमुपागतम् (hāhā duḥkhamupāgatam) — alas, alas, grief has come upon me!alas, alas, grief has come upon me!·कथं दुःखं विनश्येत् (kathaṃ duḥkhaṃ vinaśyet) — how might this grief be destroyed?how might this grief be destroyed?·अस्या अतिदुःखं ममाधुना (asyā atiduḥkhaṃ mamādhunā) — this is now my very great sorrow"this is now my very great sorrow"

मत्सुतो नाशितश्चाद्य (matsuto nāśitaścādya) — "my son has today been destroyed"my son has today been destroyed·देवैः सर्वैर्गणैस्तथा (devaiḥ sarvairgaṇaistathā) — by all the gods and likewise the gaṇas —by all the gods and likewise the gaṇas —·सर्वांस्तान्नाशयिष्यामि (sarvāṃstānnāśayiṣyāmi) — I shall destroy all of them,I shall destroy all of them,·प्रलयं वा करोम्यहम् (pralayaṃ vā karomyaham) — or I shall bring about total destruction"or I shall bring about total destruction"

इत्येवं दुःखिता सा च (ityevaṃ duḥkhitā sā ca) — thus grieving, she,thus grieving, she,·शक्तीः शतसहस्रशः (śaktīḥ śatasahasraśaḥ) — Śaktis by the hundreds of thousands,Śaktis by the hundreds of thousands,·निर्ममे तत्क्षणं क्रुद्धा (nirmame tatkṣaṇaṃ kruddhā) — enraged, created in that very instant —enraged, created in that very instant —·सर्वलोकमहेश्वरी (sarvalokamaheśvarī) — the great goddess of all the worldsthe great goddess of all the worlds

निर्मितास्ता नमस्कृत्य (nirmitāstā namaskṛtya) — those [Śaktis], once created, having bowedthose [Śaktis], once created, having bowed·जगदम्बां शिवां तदा (jagadambāṃ śivāṃ tadā) — to Jagadambā, Śivā, thento Jagadambā, Śivā, then·जाज्वल्यमाना ह्यवदन् (jājvalyamānā hyavadan) — blazing brightly, saidblazing brightly, said·मातरादिश्यतामिति (mātarādiśyatāmiti) — "O Mother, let your command be given""O Mother, let your command be given"

तच्छुत्वा शम्भुशक्तिः सा (tacchutvā śambhuśaktiḥ sā) — having heard this, that Śakti of Śambhu,having heard this, that Śakti of Śambhu,·प्रकृतिः क्रोधतत्परा (prakṛtiḥ krodhatatparā) — the Prakṛti, intent on wrath,the Prakṛti, intent on wrath,·प्रत्युवाच तु ताः सर्वा (pratyuvāca tu tāḥ sarvā) — replied to all of them —replied to all of them —·महामाया मुनीश्वर (mahāmāyā munīśvara) — the great Māyā, O lord of sagesthe great Māyā, O lord of sages

हे शक्तयोऽधुना देव्यो (he śaktayo'dhunā devyo) — "O Śaktis, O goddesses, now"O Śaktis, O goddesses, now·युष्माभिर्मन्निदेशतः (yuṣmābhirmannideśataḥ) — by you, at my command,by you, at my command,·प्रलयश्चात्र कर्त्तव्यः (pralayaścātra karttavyaḥ) — destruction is to be wrought here;destruction is to be wrought here;·नात्र कार्या विचारणा (nātra kāryā vicāraṇā) — no deliberation is to be made about this"no deliberation is to be made about this"

देवांश्चैव ऋषींश्चैव (devāṃścaiva ṛṣīṃścaiva) — "the gods, and likewise the sages,"the gods, and likewise the sages,·यक्षराक्षसकांस्तथा (yakṣarākṣasakāṃstathā) — and the yakṣas and rākṣasas as well —and the yakṣas and rākṣasas as well —·अस्मदीयान्परांश्चैव (asmadīyānparāṃścaiva) — whether they are ours or others',whether they are ours or others',·सख्यो भक्षत वै हठात् (sakhyo bhakṣata vai haṭhāt) — O friends, devour them all by force"O friends, devour them all by force"

तदाज्ञप्ताश्च ताः सर्वाः (tadājñaptāśca tāḥ sarvāḥ) — thus commanded, all thosethus commanded, all those·शक्तयः क्रोधतत्पराः (śaktayaḥ krodhatatparāḥ) — Śaktis, intent on wrath,Śaktis, intent on wrath,·देवादीनां च सर्वेषां (devādīnāṃ ca sarveṣāṃ) — of the gods and all the restof the gods and all the rest·संहारं कर्तुमुद्यताः (saṃhāraṃ kartumudyatāḥ) — became intent on bringing about the destructionbecame intent on bringing about the destruction

यथा च तृणसंहारम् (yathā ca tṛṇasaṃhāram) — just as the destruction of dry grassjust as the destruction of dry grass·अनलः कुरुते तथा (analaḥ kurute tathā) — is wrought by fire —is wrought by fire —·एवं ताः शक्तयः सर्वाः (evaṃ tāḥ śaktayaḥ sarvāḥ) — in just that way all those Śaktisin just that way all those Śaktis·संहारं कर्तुमुद्यताः (saṃhāraṃ kartumudyatāḥ) — were bent on bringing about destructionwere bent on bringing about destruction

गणपो वाथ विष्णुर्वा (gaṇapo vātha viṣṇurvā) — whether the lord of a gaṇa, or Viṣṇu,whether the lord of a gaṇa, or Viṣṇu,·ब्रह्मा वा शङ्करस्तथा (brahmā vā śaṅkarastathā) — or Brahmā, or likewise Śaṅkara,or Brahmā, or likewise Śaṅkara,·इन्द्रो वा यक्षराजो वा (indro vā yakṣarājo vā) — or Indra, or the king of the yakṣas,or Indra, or the king of the yakṣas,·स्कन्दो वा सूर्य एव वा (skando vā sūrya eva vā) — or Skanda, or even Sūryaor Skanda, or even Sūrya

सर्वेषां चैव संहारं (sarveṣāṃ caiva saṃhāraṃ) — of all of them, the destructionof all of them, the destruction·कुर्वन्ति स्म निरन्तरम् (kurvanti sma nirantaram) — they went on wreaking without pausethey went on wreaking without pause·यत्र यत्र तु दृश्येत (yatra yatra tu dṛśyeta) — wherever one might lookwherever one might look·तत्र तत्रापि शक्तयः (tatra tatrāpi śaktayaḥ) — even there, only Śaktis [were to be seen]even there, only Śaktis [were to be seen]

कराली कुब्जका खञ्जा (karālī kubjakā khañjā) — Karālī, Kubjakā, Khañjā,Karālī, Kubjakā, Khañjā,·लम्बशीर्षा ह्यनेकशः (lambaśīrṣā hyanekaśaḥ) — Lambaśīrṣā, and many others,Lambaśīrṣā, and many others,·हस्ते धृत्वा तु देवांश्च (haste dhṛtvā tu devāṃśca) — having seized the gods with their handshaving seized the gods with their hands·मुखे चैवाक्षिपंस्तदा (mukhe caivākṣipaṃstadā) — then flung them straight into their mouthsthen flung them straight into their mouths

तं संहारं तदा दृष्ट्वा (taṃ saṃhāraṃ tadā dṛṣṭvā) — having then seen that destructionhaving then seen that destruction·हरो ब्रह्मा तथा हरिः (haro brahmā tathā hariḥ) — Hara, Brahmā, and likewise Hari,Hara, Brahmā, and likewise Hari,·इन्द्रादयोऽखिला देवा (indrādayo'khilā devā) — Indra and all the other gods,Indra and all the other gods,·गणाश्च ऋषयस्तथा (gaṇāśca ṛṣayastathā) — and the gaṇas and the sages as welland the gaṇas and the sages as well

किं करिष्यति सा देवी (kiṃ kariṣyati sā devī) — [wondering] what that Goddess would do —[wondering] what that Goddess would do —·संहारं वाप्यकालतः (saṃhāraṃ vāpyakālataḥ) — would she bring about destruction even out of season?would she bring about destruction even out of season?·इति संशयमापन्ना (iti saṃśayamāpannā) — having fallen into this doubt,having fallen into this doubt,·जीवनाशा हताऽभवत् (jīvanāśā hatā'bhavat) — their hope of life was destroyedtheir hope of life was destroyed

सर्वे च मिलिताश्चेमे (sarve ca militāśceme) — "let all of us gather together;"let all of us gather together;·किं कर्त्तव्यं विचिन्त्यताम् (kiṃ karttavyaṃ vicintyatām) — let it be considered what should be done" —let it be considered what should be done" —·एवं विचारयन्तस्ते (evaṃ vicārayanteste) — thus deliberating, theythus deliberating, they·तूर्णमूचुः परस्परम् (tūrṇamūcuḥ parasparam) — spoke quickly to one anotherspoke quickly to one another

यदा च गिरिजा देवी (yadā ca girijā devī) — "only when the goddess Girijā"only when the goddess Girijā·प्रसन्ना हि भवेदिह (prasannā hi bhavediha) — becomes indeed pleased here,becomes indeed pleased here,·तदा चैव भवेत्स्वास्थ्यं (tadā caiva bhavetsvāsthyaṃ) — only then will there be well-being;only then will there be well-being;·नान्यथा कोटि यत्नतः (nānyathā koṭi yatnataḥ) — not otherwise, even by millions of efforts"not otherwise, even by millions of efforts"

शिवोऽपि दुःखमापन्नो (śivo'pi duḥkhamāpanno) — Śiva too, fallen into sorrow,Śiva too, fallen into sorrow,·लौकिकीं गतिमाश्रितः (laukikīṃ gatimāśritaḥ) — having taken recourse to a worldly bearing,having taken recourse to a worldly bearing,·मोहयन्सकलांस्तत्र (mohayansakalāṃstatra) — while bewildering everyone therewhile bewildering everyone there·नानालीलाविशारदः (nānālīlāviśāradaḥ) — [he] who is skilled in manifold divine sports[he] who is skilled in manifold divine sports

सर्वेषां चैव देवानां (sarveṣāṃ caiva devānāṃ) — of all the gods, indeed,of all the gods, indeed,·कटिर्भग्ना यदा तदा (kaṭirbhagnā yadā tadā) — the resolve broke, whenever [it came to this] —the resolve broke, whenever [it came to this] —·शिवा क्रोधमयी साक्षाद् (śivā krodhamayī sākṣād) — Śivā, wrath incarnate,Śivā, wrath incarnate,·गन्तुं न पुर उत्सहेत् (gantuṃ na pura utsahet) — no one dared go before herno one dared go before her

स्वीयो वा परकीयो वा (svīyo vā parakīyo vā) — whether one's own or another's,whether one's own or another's,·देवो वा दानवोऽपि वा (devo vā dānavo'pi vā) — a god or even a dānava,a god or even a dānava,·गणो वापि च दिक्पालो (gaṇo vāpi ca dikpālo) — a gaṇa, or a guardian of the quarters,a gaṇa, or a guardian of the quarters,·यक्षो वा किन्नरो मुनिः (yakṣo vā kinnaro muniḥ) — a yakṣa, a kinnara, or a sagea yakṣa, a kinnara, or a sage

विष्णुर्वापि तथा ब्रह्मा (viṣṇurvāpi tathā brahmā) — or Viṣṇu, or likewise Brahmā,or Viṣṇu, or likewise Brahmā,·शङ्करश्च तथा प्रभुः (śaṅkaraśca tathā prabhuḥ) — or Śaṅkara the lord as well —or Śaṅkara the lord as well —·न कश्चिद्गिरिजाग्रे च (na kaścidgirijāgre ca) — none, before Girijā,none, before Girijā,·स्थातुं शक्तोऽभवन्मुने (sthātuṃ śakto'bhavanmune) — was able to stand, O sagewas able to stand, O sage

जाज्वल्यमानं तत्तेजः (jājvalyamānaṃ tattejaḥ) — that blazing splendour of hers,that blazing splendour of hers,·सर्वतो दाहि तेऽखिलाः (sarvato dāhi te'khilāḥ) — scorching on every side, seeing that,scorching on every side, seeing that,·दृष्ट्वा भीततरा आसन् (dṛṣṭvā bhītatarā āsan) — all of them grew exceedingly afraidall of them grew exceedingly afraid·सर्वे दूरतरं स्थिताः (sarve dūrataraṃ sthitāḥ) — and all stood at a great distanceand all stood at a great distance

एतस्मिन्समये तत्र (etasminsamaye tatra) — at this time, there,at this time, there,·नारदो दिव्यदर्शनः (nārado divyadarśanaḥ) — Nārada, of divine vision —Nārada, of divine vision —·आगतस्त्वं मुने (āgatastvaṃ mune) — you, O sage, arrivedyou, O sage, arrived·देवगणानां सुखहेतवे (devagaṇānāṃ sukhahetave) — for the sake of the happiness of the hosts of godsfor the sake of the happiness of the hosts of gods

ब्रह्माणं मां भवं विष्णुं (brahmāṇaṃ māṃ bhavaṃ viṣṇuṃ) — having bowed to me, Brahmā, to Bhava, to Viṣṇu,having bowed to me, Brahmā, to Bhava, to Viṣṇu,·शङ्करं च प्रणम्य सः (śaṅkaraṃ ca praṇamya saḥ) — and to Śaṅkara, he,and to Śaṅkara, he,·समागत्य मिलित्वोचे (samāgatya militvoce) — having come near and met [us], saidhaving come near and met [us], said·विचार्य कार्यमेव वा (vicārya kāryameva vā) — that the matter should be deliberated uponthat the matter should be deliberated upon

सर्वे सम्मन्त्रयाञ्चक्रुः (sarve sammantrayāñcakruḥ) — all [of us] gods deliberated togetherall [of us] gods deliberated together·त्वया देवा महात्मना (tvayā devā mahātmanā) — with you, O great soulwith you, O great soul·दुःखशान्तिः कथं स्याद्वै (duḥkhaśāntiḥ kathaṃ syādvai) — [on] how the ending of this sorrow might come about;[on] how the ending of this sorrow might come about;·समूचुस्तत एव ते (samūcustata eva te) — they then spoke together on that very pointthey then spoke together on that very point

यावच्च गिरिजा देवी (yāvacca girijā devī) — "so long as the goddess Girijā"so long as the goddess Girijā·कृपां नैव करिष्यति (kṛpāṃ naiva kariṣyati) — shows no mercy at all,shows no mercy at all,·तावन्नैव सुखं स्याद्वै (tāvannaiva sukhaṃ syādvai) — so long there will be no happiness;so long there will be no happiness;·नात्र कार्या विचारणा (nātra kāryā vicāraṇā) — no deliberation need be made about this"no deliberation need be made about this"

ऋषयो हि त्वदाद्याश्च (ṛṣayo hi tvadādyāśca) — then the sages, beginning with you,then the sages, beginning with you,·गतास्ते वै शिवान्तिकम् (gatāste vai śivāntikam) — went to the presence of Śivā,went to the presence of Śivā,·सर्वे प्रसादयामासुः (sarve prasādayāmāsuḥ) — and all set about propitiating [her]and all set about propitiating [her]·क्रोधशान्त्यै तदा शिवाम् (krodhaśāntyai tadā śivām) — Śivā, then, so that her wrath might be pacifiedŚivā, then, so that her wrath might be pacified

पुनः पुनः प्रणेमुश्च (punaḥ punaḥ praṇemuśca) — they bowed again and again,they bowed again and again,·स्तुत्वा स्तोत्रैरनेकशः (stutvā stotrairanekaśaḥ) — praising her with many hymns of praise,praising her with many hymns of praise,·सर्वे प्रसादयन्प्रीत्या (sarve prasādayanprītyā) — all propitiating her with affection,all propitiating her with affection,·प्रोचुर्देवगणाज्ञया (procurdevagaṇājñayā) — and spoke at the direction of the hosts of godsand spoke at the direction of the hosts of gods

जगदम्ब नमस्तुभ्यं (jagadamba namastubhyaṃ) — "O Mother of the universe, salutation to you;"O Mother of the universe, salutation to you;·शिवायै ते नमोऽस्तु ते (śivāyai te namo'stu te) — to you, Śivā, let salutation be to you;to you, Śivā, let salutation be to you;·चण्डिकायै नमस्तुभ्यं (caṇḍikāyai namastubhyaṃ) — salutation to you, Caṇḍikā;salutation to you, Caṇḍikā;·कल्याण्यै च नमोऽस्तु ते (kalyāṇyai ca namo'stu te) — and let salutation be to you, O Kalyāṇī"and let salutation be to you, O Kalyāṇī"

आदिशक्तिस्त्वमेवाम्ब (ādiśaktistvamevāmba) — "you alone, O Mother, are the primordial Śakti,"you alone, O Mother, are the primordial Śakti,·सर्वसृष्टिकरी सदा (sarvasṛṣṭikarī sadā) — ever the creatrix of all;ever the creatrix of all;·त्वमेव पालिनी शक्तिः (tvameva pālinī śaktiḥ) — you alone are the Śakti who sustains,you alone are the Śakti who sustains,·त्वमेव प्रलयङ्करी (tvameva pralayaṅkarī) — and you alone bring about dissolution"and you alone bring about dissolution"

प्रसन्ना भव देवेशि (prasannā bhava deveśi) — "be pleased, O queen of the gods;"be pleased, O queen of the gods;·शान्तिं कुरु नमोऽस्तु ते (śāntiṃ kuru namo'stu te) — grant peace — salutation be to you;grant peace — salutation be to you;·सर्वं हि विकलं देवि (sarvaṃ hi vikalaṃ devi) — for entirely distraught, O goddess,for entirely distraught, O goddess,·त्रिजगत्तव कोपतः (trijagattava kopataḥ) — is the triple world, from your wrath"is the triple world, from your wrath"

एवं स्तुता परा देवी (evaṃ stutā parā devī) — thus praised, the supreme goddess,thus praised, the supreme goddess,·ऋषिभिश्च त्वदादिभिः (ṛṣibhiśca tvadādibhiḥ) — by the sages, beginning with you,by the sages, beginning with you,·क्रुद्धदृष्ट्या तदा तांश्च (kruddhadṛṣṭyā tadā tāṃśca) — then, looking at them with an angry glance,then, looking at them with an angry glance,·किञ्चिन्नोवाच सा शिवा (kiñcinnovāca sā śivā) — that Śivā said nothing at allthat Śivā said nothing at all

वयं के च इमे देवा (vayaṃ ke ca ime devā) — "who indeed are we, and who these gods —"who indeed are we, and who these gods —·विष्णुब्रह्मादयस्तथा (viṣṇubrahmādayastathā) — Viṣṇu, Brahmā, and the rest?Viṣṇu, Brahmā, and the rest?·प्रजाश्च भवदीयाश्च (prajāśca bhavadīyāśca) — we are your own creatures,we are your own creatures,·कृताञ्जलिपुटाः स्थिताः (kṛtāñjalipuṭāḥ sthitāḥ) — standing here with joined palms"standing here with joined palms"

क्षन्तव्यश्चापराधो वै (kṣantavyaścāparādho vai) — "the offense of all of us should indeed be forgiven,"the offense of all of us should indeed be forgiven,·सर्वेषां परमेश्वरि (sarveṣāṃ parameśvari) — O supreme goddess;O supreme goddess;·सर्वे हि विकलाश्चाद्य (sarve hi vikalāścādya) — for all are today distraught —for all are today distraught —·शान्तिं तेषां शिवे कुरु (śāntiṃ teṣāṃ śive kuru) — grant them peace, O Śivā"grant them peace, O Śivā"

इत्युक्त्वा ऋषयःसर्वे (ityuktvā ṛṣayaḥsarve) — having said this, all the sages,having said this, all the sages,·सुदीनतरमाकुलाः (sudīnataramākulāḥ) — exceedingly humble and distressed,exceedingly humble and distressed,·सन्तस्थिरे चण्डिकाग्रे (santasthire caṇḍikāgre) — remained standing before Caṇḍikāremained standing before Caṇḍikā·कृताञ्जलिपुटास्तदा (kṛtāñjalipuṭāstadā) — with joined palms, thenwith joined palms, then

मत्पुत्रो यदि जीवेत (matputro yadi jīveta) — "if my son should live,"if my son should live,·तदा संहरणं न हि (tadā saṃharaṇaṃ na hi) — then there will indeed be no destruction —then there will indeed be no destruction —·यथा हि भवतां मध्ये (yathā hi bhavatāṃ madhye) — provided that, among you,provided that, among you,·पूज्योऽयं च भविष्यति (pūjyo'yaṃ ca bhaviṣyati) — he becomes one who is to be honoured"he becomes one who is to be honoured"

ते च सर्वे तथा श्रुत्वा (te ca sarve tathā śrutvā) — and they all, having heard this,and they all, having heard this,·शङ्कराय न्यवेदयन् (śaṅkarāya nyavedayan) — reported it to Śaṅkara,reported it to Śaṅkara,·नत्वा प्राञ्जलयो दीनाः (natvā prāñjalayo dīnāḥ) — having bowed, humbled, with joined palms —having bowed, humbled, with joined palms —·शक्रप्रभृतयः सुराः (śakraprabhṛtayaḥ surāḥ) — the gods, beginning with Śakra (Indra)the gods, beginning with Śakra (Indra)

प्रोवाचेति सुराञ्छ्रुत्वा (provāceti surāñchrutvā) — having heard this from the gods, [he] then spoke:having heard this from the gods, [he] then spoke:·शिवश्चापि तथा पुनः (śivaścāpi tathā punaḥ) — Śiva, too, then again [said],Śiva, too, then again [said],·कर्त्तव्यं च तथा (karttavyaṃ ca tathā) — "that should be done, in such a way"that should be done, in such a way·सर्वलोकस्वास्थ्यं भवेदिह (sarvalokasvāsthyaṃ bhavediha) — that the well-being of all the worlds may come about here"that the well-being of all the worlds may come about here"

उत्तरस्यां पुनर्यात (uttarasyāṃ punaryāta) — "go again towards the north;"go again towards the north;·प्रथमं यो मिलेदिह (prathamaṃ yo milediha) — whoever is met with first here,whoever is met with first here,·तच्छिरश्च समाहृत्य (tacchiraśca samāhṛtya) — his head, having brought it back,his head, having brought it back,·योजनीयं कलेवरे (yojanīyaṃ kalevare) — is to be joined onto the [headless] body"is to be joined onto the [headless] body"

ततस्तैस्तत्कृतं सर्वं (tatastaistatkṛtaṃ sarvaṃ) — then all of that was done by them,then all of that was done by them,·शिवाज्ञाप्रतिपालकैः (śivājñāpratipālakaiḥ) — who upheld Śiva's command;who upheld Śiva's command;·कलेवरं समानीय (kalevaraṃ samānīya) — having brought the [headless] bodyhaving brought the [headless] body·प्रक्षाल्य विधिवच्च तत् (prakṣālya vidhivacca tat) — and having washed it properly according to ruleand having washed it properly according to rule

पूजयित्वा पुनस्ते वै (pūjayitvā punaste vai) — having then worshipped it, theyhaving then worshipped it, they·गताश्चोदङ्मुखास्तदा (gatāścodaṅmukhāstadā) — then went, facing the north;then went, facing the north;·प्रथमं मिलितस्तत्र (prathamaṃ militastatra) — the first one met therethe first one met there·हस्ती चाप्येकदन्तकः (hastī cāpyekadantakaḥ) — was an elephant, with but a single tuskwas an elephant, with but a single tusk

तच्छिरश्च तदा नीत्वा (tacchiraśca tadā nītvā) — and having then brought its head,and having then brought its head,·तत्र तेऽयोजयन् ध्रुवम् (tatra te'yojayan dhruvam) — they there joined it on firmly;they there joined it on firmly;·संयोज्य देवताःसर्वाः (saṃyojya devatāḥsarvāḥ) — having joined it, all the deities,having joined it, all the deities,·शिवं विष्णुं विधिं तदा (śivaṃ viṣṇuṃ vidhiṃ tadā) — [went] then to Śiva, Viṣṇu, and Vidhi (Brahmā)[went] then to Śiva, Viṣṇu, and Vidhi (Brahmā)

प्रणम्य वचनं प्रोचुः (praṇamya vacanaṃ procuḥ) — having bowed, they said these words:having bowed, they said these words:·भवदुक्तं कृतं च नः (bhavaduktaṃ kṛtaṃ ca naḥ) — "what was said by you has been done by us;"what was said by you has been done by us;·अनन्तरं च तत्कार्यं (anantaraṃ ca tatkāryaṃ) — and whatever task remains after this,and whatever task remains after this,·भवताद्भवशेषितम् (bhavatādbhavaśeṣitam) — let it be [accomplished] by you, O lord, whatever is left"let it be [accomplished] by you, O lord, whatever is left"

ऊचुस्ते च तदा तत्र (ūcuste ca tadā tatra) — and they then said there —and they then said there —·ब्रह्मविष्णुसुरास्तथा (brahmaviṣṇusurāstathā) — Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and the gods —Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and the gods —·प्रणम्येशं शिवं देवं (praṇamyeśaṃ śivaṃ devaṃ) — having bowed to the lord, the god Śiva,having bowed to the lord, the god Śiva,·स्वप्रभुं गुणवर्जितम् (svaprabhuṃ guṇavarjitam) — their own lord, devoid of qualitiestheir own lord, devoid of qualities

यस्मात्त्वत्तेजसःसर्वे (yasmāttvattejasaḥsarve) — "since, from your splendour, all"since, from your splendour, all·वयं जाता महात्मनः (vayaṃ jātā mahātmanaḥ) — we have been born, O great soul,we have been born, O great soul,·त्वत्तेजस्तत्समायातु (tvattejastatsamāyātu) — let that splendour of yours comelet that splendour of yours come·वेदमन्त्राभियोगतः (vedamantrābhiyogataḥ) — through the application of Vedic mantras"through the application of Vedic mantras"

इत्येवमभिमन्त्रेण (ityevamabhimantreṇa) — with this very consecrating mantra,with this very consecrating mantra,·मन्त्रितं जलमुत्तमम् (mantritaṃ jalamuttamam) — excellent water that had been consecratedexcellent water that had been consecrated·स्मृत्वा शिवं समेतास्ते (smṛtvā śivaṃ sametāste) — they, gathered together, remembering Śiva,they, gathered together, remembering Śiva,·चिक्षिपुस्तत्कलेवरे (cikṣipustatkalevare) — sprinkled onto that bodysprinkled onto that body

तज्जलस्पर्शमात्रेण (tajjalasparśamātreṇa) — by the mere touch of that water,by the mere touch of that water,·चिद्युतो जीवितो द्रुतम् (cidyuto jīvito drutam) — endowed with consciousness, he came to life at once;endowed with consciousness, he came to life at once;·तदोत्तस्थौ सुप्त इव (tadottasthau supta iva) — then he rose up, as if from sleep,then he rose up, as if from sleep,·स बालश्च शिवेच्छया (sa bālaśca śivecchayā) — that boy, by the will of Śivathat boy, by the will of Śiva

सुभगः सुन्दरतरो (subhagaḥ sundarataro) — auspicious, most handsome,auspicious, most handsome,·गजवक्त्रः सुरक्तकः (gajavaktraḥ suraktakaḥ) — elephant-faced, of a fine reddish hue,elephant-faced, of a fine reddish hue,·प्रसन्नवदनश्चाति (prasannavadanaścāti) — with a serene countenance, exceedinglywith a serene countenance, exceedingly·सुप्रभो ललिताकृतिः (suprabho lalitākṛtiḥ) — radiant, of graceful formradiant, of graceful form

तं दृष्ट्वा जीवितं बालं (taṃ dṛṣṭvā jīvitaṃ bālaṃ) — seeing that boy alive,seeing that boy alive,·शिवापुत्रं मुनीश्वर (śivāputraṃ munīśvara) — the son of Śivā, O lord of sages,the son of Śivā, O lord of sages,·सर्वे मुमुदिरे तत्र (sarve mumudire tatra) — everyone there rejoiced,everyone there rejoiced,·सर्वं दुःखं क्षयं गतम् (sarvaṃ duḥkhaṃ kṣayaṃ gatam) — and all sorrow came to an endand all sorrow came to an end

देव्यै सन्दर्शयामासुः (devyai sandarśayāmāsuḥ) — they showed [him] to the Goddess,they showed [him] to the Goddess,·सर्वे हर्षसमन्विताः (sarve harṣasamanvitāḥ) — all of them filled with joy;all of them filled with joy;·जीवितं तनयं दृष्ट्वा (jīvitaṃ tanayaṃ dṛṣṭvā) — seeing her son alive,seeing her son alive,·देवी हृष्टतराभवत् (devī hṛṣṭatarābhavat) — the Goddess became exceedingly delightedthe Goddess became exceedingly delighted
