Chapter Seventeen · Gaṇeśa Restored with an Elephant's Head · Verses 1–59

Nārada asks Brahmā to relate, in full truth, what Mahādevī did after hearing of her son's slaying. Brahmā tells how, even as the gaṇas were celebrating the beheading and Śiva himself was regretting his hasty act, Girijā (Pārvatī) fell into a fury of grief, resolving to destroy the gods and the worlds unless her son was avenged; from her own body she instantly created hundreds of thousands of blazing Śaktis and, as the supreme Māyā, commanded them to devour every god, sage, yakṣa, and rākṣasa without discrimination. The Śaktis — among them the fearsome Karālī, Kubjakā, Khañjā, and Lambaśīrṣā — fell upon Gaṇapati (here a name for Kārtikeya's gaṇa-companies), Viṣṇu, Brahmā, Śaṅkara, Indra, Skanda, Sūrya, and all the rest without pause, seizing them and thrusting them into their mouths, until every god and sage despaired of life and Śiva himself, helpless before Pārvatī's blazing wrath, could not bring himself to approach her. At this crisis Nārada arrived, and after consulting with Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva, he led the great sages to Pārvatī to plead for peace; hymned again and again as Jagadambā, Śivā, Caṇḍikā, and the Ādiśakti who creates, sustains, and destroys, she remained silent and unmoved until the sages, casting themselves down before her, cried that her own consort stood right there and begged forgiveness for all. Won over at last, Caṇḍikā declared that the destruction would cease only once her son lived again and was made chief and most honoured among the gods; when this was reported back to Śiva, he ordered the gods to go north and bring the head of whatever creature they first met, to be joined to Gaṇeśa's body. The gods retrieved and washed the headless trunk, went north, and met an elephant with a single tusk; they brought its head, fixed it upon the body, and, invoking Śiva and reciting Vedic mantras over consecrated water, sprinkled it upon the corpse. At its very touch the boy started up as if from sleep, alive, handsome, elephant-faced, and radiant with a gentle countenance; all rejoiced at the sight, and led Pārvatī herself to see her living son, filling her with the greatest joy.
