Chapter Nine · Kāma's Power and the Māra-gaṇas · Verses 1–63

अथ नवमोऽध्यायः

Brahmā continues his account to Nārada: Kāma, arriving at Śiva's abode with Vasanta and Rati, deluded every other creature at once, yet could make no impression on Śiva in samādhi, however many devices he tried — a cool scented breeze, his five flower-arrows, glances, blossoming trees and courting animals, even in Śiva's most vulnerable, unguarded moments. Kāma returns to Brahmā in despair, confessing he lacks the power. Brahmā, sighing in anxious thought, unwittingly gives birth from his own breath to the terrifying Māra-gaṇas, who cry out for slaughter; Kāma calms them, and Brahmā names them Māra, assigns them to accompany Kāma always, and sends Kāma out again with them for a second attempt. It too fails outright — Śiva remains utterly unmoved, though mercifully he does not burn Kāma's body. Kāma returns home once more, urging Brahmā to devise some other means, free of pride. ब्रह्मा जी नारद जी से आगे की कथा कहते हैं: कामदेव रति तथा वसन्त के साथ शिवजी के स्थान पर पहुँचकर अन्य सभी प्राणियों को तत्काल मोहित कर लेता है, किंतु समाधिस्थ शिवजी पर शीतल सुगन्धित वायु, पाँचों पुष्पबाणों, कटाक्षों, खिले वृक्षों तथा पशु-पक्षियों के हाव-भाव — इनमें से किसी भी उपाय का कोई प्रभाव नहीं पड़ता। निराश होकर कामदेव ब्रह्मा जी के पास लौटकर अपनी असमर्थता स्वीकार करता है। चिन्तामग्न होकर ब्रह्मा जी की श्वास से अनजाने ही भयंकर मारगणों का जन्म होता है, जो वध की पुकार मचाते हैं; कामदेव उन्हें शान्त करता है, और ब्रह्मा जी उनका नाम "मार" रखकर उन्हें सदा कामदेव के साथ रहने का कार्य सौंपते हैं तथा कामदेव को उनके साथ पुनः भेजते हैं। यह दूसरा प्रयत्न भी पूर्णतः विफल हो जाता है — शिवजी सर्वथा निर्विकार रहते हैं, यद्यपि दयावश वे कामदेव के शरीर को भस्म नहीं करते। कामदेव पुनः अपने आश्रम लौटकर ब्रह्मा जी से गर्वरहित होकर कोई अन्य उपाय खोजने का अनुरोध करता है।
