अथाष्टमोऽध्यायः
Nārada, pleased at hearing the story of Arundhatī and her earlier existence as Sandhyā, asks Brahmā what happened after Kāma married Rati and Sandhyā went off to her austerity. Brahmā confesses that Śiva's reproach of his own longing for a wife had left him envious, and that he urged Kāma to delude Śiva into taking a wife, promising him every aid. Kāma agrees, but asks Brahmā to fashion the woman who will be his weapon against Śiva. As Brahmā sits absorbed in anxious thought over how this might be done, his own sigh gives birth to Vasanta (Spring) — a beautiful, flower-adorned figure who becomes Kāma's permanent companion, together with the amorous arts and the breeze of the Malaya mountain. Kāma then sets out with Rati and Vasanta toward the place where Śiva has withdrawn.अरुन्धती तथा उसके पूर्वस्वरूप सन्ध्या की कथा सुनकर प्रसन्न हुए नारद जी ब्रह्मा जी से पूछते हैं कि कामदेव के विवाह और सन्ध्या के तपस्या हेतु जाने के बाद क्या हुआ। ब्रह्मा जी बताते हैं कि अपनी स्त्री-अभिलाषा पर शिवजी की फटकार से वे ईर्ष्यायुक्त हो गये थे, और उन्होंने कामदेव को शिवजी को मोहित कर विवाह के लिये प्रेरित करने को कहा तथा हर प्रकार की सहायता का वचन दिया। कामदेव सहमत होता है, किंतु ब्रह्मा जी से उस स्त्री को उत्पन्न करने का अनुरोध करता है, जो शिवजी के विरुद्ध उसका अस्त्र बनेगी। इस उपाय पर चिन्तामग्न ब्रह्मा जी की श्वास से वसन्त का जन्म होता है — पुष्पों से अलंकृत एक सुन्दर रूप, जो हाव-भाव की कलाओं तथा मलयानिल के साथ कामदेव का स्थायी सहचर बन जाता है। तत्पश्चात् कामदेव रति तथा वसन्त के साथ उस स्थान की ओर चल पड़ता है, जहाँ शिवजी गये हैं।
