Chapter Six·Sandhyā's Austerity and Śiva's Boons·Verses 1–62
Sandhyā completes four full yugas of silent austerity on Mount Candrabhāga; Śiva, pleased, appears before her within, without and in the sky, and grants her divine knowledge, speech and sight. Overcoming her fear, she praises him in a long hymn extolling his formless, all-pervading nature. Deeply moved, Śiva offers her a boon: she asks that no embodied being, the instant it is born, be overcome by desire, that her own progeny and husband be free of it, and that any man but her husband who looks on her with desire lose his manhood. Śiva grants all this and more — unmatched satītva, a husband who will live seven kalpas with her — then reveals that her promised end, giving up her body in fire, is to come at the sage Medhātithi's twelve-year sacrifice, where she will be reborn as his daughter, before vanishing.

O best of sons, greatly wise one, hear the great austerity performed by Sandhyā, hearing which the mass of sin is surely destroyed that very instant.

After instructing her in the nature of austerity, when Vasiṣṭha had gone to his own home, Sandhyā too, having learned the practice of austerity, attained great joy.
