Nārada asks what became of Sandhyā after everyone went home; Brahmā tells how, seeing the desire she had unwittingly provoked in her own father and brothers, and mortified by Śiva's mockery, Sandhyā resolved to atone: she would establish, through fierce austerity, a rule against such desire arising the instant a being is born, then give up her body. She went to Mount Candrabhāga; Brahmā sent Vasiṣṭha, in another form so as not to trouble her further, to instruct her in silent worship of Śiva. Vasiṣṭha taught her the mantra and discipline of mauna-tapasyā, then vanished — this same Sandhyā, Brahmā notes, would later become Arundhatī.

'Oṃ, homage to Śaṅkara' — with Oṃ at the beginning and end, continuously, in silence — begin this austerity; hear it now as I explain it to you.

Bathing must be done in silence, and the worship of Hara too in silence. For the first two of the six-hour periods, take only water as food.

But in the third six-hour period, one should observe fasting. In this way this practice should continue for each six-hour period until the austerity is complete.

Thus, O goddess, this is called the silent austerity; it bestows the fruit of celibacy and grants every desired wish — this is true, true, without doubt.

"Then Vasiṣṭha, having sat down and duly instructed Sandhyā in this manner in the practice of austerity, addressing her rightly, the sage vanished then and there.
