Sanatkumāra continues the narrative: Hara graciously and lovingly accepts the plea of all the gods, gathered earlier, to fight Tripura. Just then the goddess Śivā arrives with her two sons; astonished, Viṣṇu and the other gods bow to her, unaware of the reason for her coming, and merely raise a cry of "Victory!" The Devī, filled with wonder, affectionately draws her lord's attention to their radiant son Ṣaṇmukha at play; utterly absorbed, Maheśvara embraces and delights in Skanda, oblivious for the moment to the anxious gods who had come seeking his help. After conferring briefly with her lord, the goddess rises, and Śambhu, together with Nandī, Ṣaṇmukha, and the daughter of the mountain-king, enters his own dwelling, honoured by all the assembled gods. Left standing helplessly beside the door, the gods fall into utter distress, not knowing what to do or where to turn, each blaming his own fate; when the mighty gaṇa Kumbhodara begins driving them off with his staff, they scatter in terror, and Indra and the other divine sages collapse to the ground in despair. Gathering around Brahmā and Viṣṇu, Śiva's friends, the sages headed by Kaśyapa lament this turn of fate, until Viṣṇu consoles them, explaining that the worship of the great is never easy and that sorrow precedes any true propitiation; he teaches them a mantra built from oṃ, namaḥ, śivāya, śubhaṃ śubhaṃ, and kuru kuru, and instructs them to recite it a full ten million times with resolve, promising that Śiva will then surely grant their wish. The gods duly renew their japa under Viṣṇu and Brahmā's own recitation, and Śiva at last appears in person, pleased by their devotion, and invites them to ask for a boon. Speaking as one voice, the gods beg him to destroy the cities of Tripura and to protect them as he always has. Amused, Śiva smilingly agrees, declaring the triple city as good as destroyed, and directs Viṣṇu and Brahmā — as the appointed guardians of creation and preservation — to furnish without delay the divine chariot, charioteer, bow, and arrow they had earlier promised him, and to equip him as befits a universal sovereign for the coming war. He then extols the greatness of the very mantra he has just received, describing it as supremely meritorious, granting both worldly enjoyment and final liberation, fulfilling every desire of whoever recites, hears, or causes it to be heard with a pure heart. Rejoicing at Śiva's words — Hari and Brahmā more than any — the gods are overjoyed, and at their command Viśvakarmā at once sets about fashioning a resplendent, divine chariot composed of all the gods, for the sake of the whole universe.

Then, seeing Śivā arrived, all [the gods] headed by Viṣṇu bowed down at once, most humbly — astonished, yet their confusion now gone.

O sage, they all uttered the auspicious cry of good omen, 'Victory!' — yet, not knowing the reason for her coming, they fell silent.

Then the goddess, praised by all the gods, herself filled with wondrous curiosity, lovingly addressed her lord, who is skilled in manifold divine sports.
अथ सर्वैः स्तुता देवैः (atha sarvaiḥ stutā devaiḥ) — then, praised by all the gods,देव्यद्भुतकुतूहला (devyadbhutakutūhalā) — the goddess, filled with wondrous curiosity,उवाच स्वामिनं प्रीत्या (uvāca svāminaṃ prītyā) — lovingly addressed her lord,नानालीलाविशारदम् (nānālīlāviśāradam) — who is skilled in manifold divine sports

[The goddess said:] 'O lord, behold the six-faced one, radiant as the sun, at play — your son, O best of those blessed with sons, adorned with the finest ornaments.'
क्रीडमानं विभो पश्य (krīḍamānaṃ vibho paśya) — 'O lord, behold, at play,षण्मुखं रविसन्निभम् (ṣaṇmukhaṃ ravisannibham) — the six-faced one, radiant as the sun —पुत्रं पुत्रवतां श्रेष्ठ (putraṃ putravatāṃ śreṣṭha) — your son, O best of those who have sons,भूषितं भूषणैर्वरैः (bhūṣitaṃ bhūṣaṇairvaraiḥ) — adorned with the finest ornaments'

ityevaṃ lokamātrā ca vāgbhiḥsambodhitaśśivaḥ | na yayau tṛptimīśānaḥ piban skandānanāmṛtam 7 ||
[Sanatkumāra said:] Thus addressed with these words by the Mother of the World, Śiva the lord found no satiety, drinking in, as it were, the nectar of Skanda's face.
इत्येवं लोकमात्रा च (ityevaṃ lokamātrā ca) — thus, by the Mother of the World,वाग्भिः सम्बोधितः शिवः (vāgbhiḥ sambodhitaḥ śivaḥ) — addressed with these words, Śiva —न ययौ तृप्तिमीशानः (na yayau tṛptimīśānaḥ) — the lord did not attain satiety,पिबन् स्कन्दाननामृतम् (piban skandānanāmṛtam) — drinking in the nectar of Skanda's face
na sasmārāgatān devān nijatejonipīḍitān | skandamāliṅgya cāghrāya mumodāti maheśvaraḥ 8 ||
Doubtful readingThis edition reads निजतेजोनिपीडितान् ("oppressed by their own splendour"); an alternate reading, दैत्यतेजोनिपीडितान् ("oppressed by the demons' power"), also circulates and arguably fits the chapter's context better, since the gods have come to Śiva burdened by Tripura's power. The text here follows निजतेजोनिपीडितान्; readers should note the doubt.
He did not [even] remember the gods who had come there, oppressed by their own splendour; embracing Skanda and smelling his head, Maheśvara rejoiced greatly.

jagadambātha tatraiva sammantrya prabhuṇā ca sā | sthitvā kiñcitsamuttasthau nānālīlāviśāradā 9 ||
Then the Mother of the World, having there conferred with the Lord, remained a little while and then rose — she who is skilled in manifold divine sports.

'What is to be done? Where should we go? Who could grant us happiness?' — this 'but... but...' arose among them, and they cried, 'Alas, we are undone!'

Looking upon one another, Indra and the rest became utterly overwhelmed; cursing their own fate, they spoke distraught words.

'We are sinners,' said some gods; 'we are truly unfortunate,' said others; and yet others said, 'It is those lords of the demons who are fortunate.'

Just then, hearing their manifold cries, the mighty Kumbhodara struck the gods with his staff.
Noteकुम्भोदर is named here as one of Śiva's gaṇas, not an otherwise-identified figure; rendered here simply as a proper name.
