रुद्रसंहिता — पार्वतीखण्डअथैकोनचत्वारिंशोऽध्यायः
Continuing his narration, Brahmā tells Nārada how, after Nārada brought word of the divine wedding-invitation, Śiva received it joyfully, honoured the seven sages who bore it, and sent Nārada, still praising his own good fortune at having been remembered, to summon Viṣṇu, the other gods, sages and Siddhas, with their wives and hosts, declaring that any who failed to come would no longer be counted his own. Nārada faithfully carried out this errand and returned to wait with Śiva, who himself awaited his guests amid his gaṇas' rejoicing; presently Viṣṇu arrived and did obeisance, followed in turn by Brahmā, Indra and the other lokapālas, sages, nāgas, Siddhas and demigods, all of whom Śiva honoured individually amid a great celebration at Kailāsa. While the assembled gods stayed on to help prepare Śiva's bridal procession, the seven Mothers dressed him in his bridegroom's array, adorning him with his own natural ornaments — the crescent moon at his crown, his third eye as a tilaka, serpents as earrings and other jewels, ash as unguent, and an elephant-hide as his silken garment — until his form shone with a beauty beyond description, at which the assembled gods, demons, nāgas, siddhas, apsarases and great sages hailed him and urged him to set out for the wedding. Praising him with fitting words, Viṣṇu asked that Śiva perform the marriage rites according to the household ritual code and set up the wedding pavilion and the nāndīmukha rite in the proper family manner. Śiva agreed and had Brahmā take charge of all the auspicious observances; many great sages beginning with Kaśyapa gathered and, at Brahmā's bidding, duly performed the protective rites, chanted Vedic hymns of blessing, and worshipped the planets to avert obstacles. His observances complete, Śiva reverenced the Brāhmaṇas, set out from Kailāsa with the gods and twice-born leading the way, and paused just beyond the mountain amid a great festival of song, music and dance held by the gods in his honour. ब्रह्माजी नारदजीको आगेकी कथा सुनाते हुए बताते हैं कि नारदजीके द्वारा विवाहकी मंगलपत्रिका मिलनेका समाचार सुनकर शिवजी अत्यन्त प्रसन्न हुए, उन्होंने पत्रिका लानेवाले सप्तर्षियोंका भरपूर सम्मान किया और अपने सौभाग्यकी सराहना करते हुए नारदजीको भी स्मरण किया। शिवजीने नारदजीसे कहा कि वे विष्णु आदि देवताओं, मुनियों तथा सिद्धोंको उनकी पत्नियों और परिवारसहित निमन्त्रण दें, और जो विवाहमें सम्मिलित नहीं होंगे उन्हें वे अपना नहीं मानेंगे। नारदजीने यह कार्य पूर्णकर शिवजीके पास प्रतीक्षा करने लगे। तत्पश्चात् विष्णु, ब्रह्मा, इन्द्र आदि लोकपाल, ऋषि, नाग, सिद्ध तथा अन्य देवगण अपने-अपने परिवारोंसहित कैलासपर आये, जिनका शिवजीने पृथक्-पृथक् सत्कार किया और वहाँ भव्य उत्सव होने लगा। इसी बीच सप्तमातृकाओंने शिवजीको दूल्हेके वेषमें सजाया—चन्द्रमाको मुकुटमें, तीसरे नेत्रको तिलकके रूपमें, सर्पोंको कुण्डल एवं आभूषणोंके रूपमें, भस्मको अंगरागके रूपमें तथा गजचर्मको दिव्य वस्त्रके रूपमें धारण कराया गया, जिससे शिवजीका रूप अवर्णनीय रूपसे सुन्दर हो गया। सभी देवता, दानव, नाग, सिद्ध, अप्सराएँ तथा महर्षि प्रसन्न होकर शिवजीसे विवाहके लिये प्रस्थान करनेकी प्रार्थना करने लगे। तब विष्णुने भक्तिपूर्वक निवेदन किया कि शिवजी गृह्यसूत्रकी विधिसे अपना विवाह-कर्म तथा मण्डपस्थापन एवं नान्दीमुख-कृत्य सम्पन्न करें, जिससे सारे लोकमें यह विधि प्रतिष्ठित हो जाय। शिवजीने यह स्वीकार करके सारा लौकिक कार्य ब्रह्माजीको सौंप दिया; कश्यप आदि अनेक महर्षियोंने विधिपूर्वक कौतुक-मंगल, वेदमन्त्रोंसे रक्षाविधान तथा ग्रहशान्तिका पूजन सम्पन्न किया। इस प्रकार सम्पूर्ण लौकिक-वैदिक कार्य पूर्णकर शिवजी ब्राह्मणोंको प्रणामकर देवताओं तथा द्विजोंको आगे करके कैलाससे बाहर निकले और वहाँ देवताओंद्वारा किये गये गान-वाद्य-नृत्यके महोत्सवके बीच प्रसन्नतापूर्वक ठहर गये।
१ विधे तात महाप्राज्ञ विष्णुशिष्य नमोऽस्तु ते। अद्भुतेयं कथाश्रावि त्वत्तोऽस्माभिः कृपानिधे॥ १
vidhe tāta mahāprājña viṣṇuśiṣya namo'stu te | adbhuteyaṃ kathāśrāvi tvatto'smābhiḥ kṛpānidhe 1 ||
हे विधाता! हे तात! हे महाप्राज्ञ! हे विष्णुके शिष्य! आपको प्रणाम है। हे कृपाके भण्डार! हमने आपसे यह अद्भुत कथा सुनी है।
O Creator, O father, greatly wise disciple of Viṣṇu, salutation to you! O treasury of compassion, we have heard this wondrous tale from you.
विधे तात महाप्राज्ञ (vidhe tāta mahāprājña) — O Creator, O father, O greatly wise oneविष्णुशिष्य नमोऽस्तु ते (viṣṇuśiṣya namo'stu te) — O disciple of Viṣṇu, salutation to youअद्भुतेयं कथाश्रावि (adbhuteyaṃ kathāśrāvi) — this wondrous tale was heardत्वत्तोऽस्माभिः कृपानिधे (tvatto'smābhiḥ kṛpānidhe) — from you by us, O treasury of compassion
२ इदानीं श्रोतुमिच्छामि चरितं शशिमौलिनः। वैवाहिकं सुमाङ्गल्यं सर्वाघौघविनाशनम्॥ २
idānīṃ śrotumicchāmi caritaṃ śaśimaulinaḥ | vaivāhikaṃ sumāṅgalyaṃ sarvāghaughavināśanam 2 ||
अब मैं चन्द्रमौलि शिवजीका चरित्र सुनना चाहता हूँ—उनकी विवाह-कथा, जो परम मंगलमयी तथा समस्त पापोंके समूहका नाश करनेवाली है।
Now I wish to hear the deeds of the moon-crested Lord — his wedding-tale, full of auspiciousness, which destroys the whole mass of sins.
इदानीं श्रोतुमिच्छामि (idānīṃ śrotumicchāmi) — now I wish to hearचरितं शशिमौलिनः (caritaṃ śaśimaulinaḥ) — the deeds of the moon-crested oneवैवाहिकं सुमाङ्गल्यं (vaivāhikaṃ sumāṅgalyaṃ) — the wedding-tale, full of auspiciousnessसर्वाघौघविनाशनम् (sarvāghaughavināśanam) — that destroys the entire mass of sins
३ किं चकार महादेवः प्राप्य मङ्गलपत्रिकाम्। तां श्रावय कथां दिव्यां शङ्करस्य परात्मनः॥ ३
kiṃ cakāra mahādevaḥ prāpya maṅgalapatrikām | tāṃ śrāvaya kathāṃ divyāṃ śaṅkarasya parātmanaḥ 3 ||
मंगलपत्रिका प्राप्तकर महादेवजीने क्या किया? परमात्मा शंकरकी वह दिव्य कथा मुझे सुनाइये।
What did the great god do on receiving the auspicious wedding-letter? Relate to me that divine story of Śaṅkara, the supreme soul.
किं चकार महादेवः (kiṃ cakāra mahādevaḥ) — what did the great god doप्राप्य मङ्गलपत्रिकाम् (prāpya maṅgalapatrikām) — upon receiving the auspicious wedding-letterतां श्रावय कथां दिव्यां (tāṃ śrāvaya kathāṃ divyāṃ) — relate that divine storyशङ्करस्य परात्मनः (śaṅkarasya parātmanaḥ) — of Śaṅkara, the supreme soul
४ शृणु वत्स महाप्राज्ञ शाङ्करं परमं यशः। यच्चकार महादेवः प्राप्य मङ्गलपत्रिकाम्॥ ४
śṛṇu vatsa mahāprājña śāṅkaraṃ paramaṃ yaśaḥ | yaccakāra mahādevaḥ prāpya maṅgalapatrikām 4 ||
हे वत्स! हे महाप्राज्ञ! शंकरजीके उस परम यशको सुनो, जो महादेवजीने मंगलपत्रिका प्राप्तकर किया।
Listen, O wise child, to this supreme glory of Śaṅkara — what the great god did upon receiving the auspicious wedding-letter.
शृणु वत्स महाप्राज्ञ (śṛṇu vatsa mahāprājña) — listen, O child, O greatly wise oneशाङ्करं परमं यशः (śāṅkaraṃ paramaṃ yaśaḥ) — to the supreme glory concerning Śaṅkaraयच्चकार महादेवः (yaccakāra mahādevaḥ) — to what the great god didप्राप्य मङ्गलपत्रिकाम् (prāpya maṅgalapatrikām) — upon receiving the auspicious wedding-letter
५ अथ शम्भुर्गृहीत्वा तां मुदा मङ्गलपत्रिकाम्। विजहास प्रहृष्टात्मा मानं तेषां व्यधाद्विभुः॥ ५
atha śambhurgṛhītvā tāṃ mudā maṅgalapatrikām | vijahāsa prahṛṣṭātmā mānaṃ teṣāṃ vyadhādvibhuḥ 5 ||
तब शम्भुने प्रसन्नतापूर्वक उस मंगलपत्रिकाको ग्रहण किया और हर्षित हृदयसे जोरसे हँसे तथा उन प्रभुने उन पत्रिका लानेवालोंका सम्मान किया।
Then Śambhu, taking that auspicious wedding-letter with joy, laughed aloud, his heart delighted, and the mighty Lord honoured those who bore it.
अथ शम्भुर्गृहीत्वा तां (atha śambhurgṛhītvā tāṃ) — then Śambhu, having taken thatमुदा मङ्गलपत्रिकाम् (mudā maṅgalapatrikām) — auspicious wedding-letter, with joyविजहास प्रहृष्टात्मा (vijahāsa prahṛṣṭātmā) — laughed aloud, his heart delightedमानं तेषां व्यधाद्विभुः (mānaṃ teṣāṃ vyadhādvibhuḥ) — and the mighty lord showed them honour
६ वाचयित्वा च तां सम्यग्स्वीचकार विधानतः। तज्जनान्यापयामास बहुसम्मान्य चादृतः॥ ६
vācayitvā ca tāṃ samyagsvīcakāra vidhānataḥ | tajjanānyāpayāmāsa bahusammānya cādṛtaḥ 6 ||
उस पत्रिकाको पढ़वाकर उन्होंने विधिपूर्वक उसे भलीभाँति स्वीकार किया और उन लोगोंको बहुत सम्मानित एवं आदरपूर्वक विदा किया।
Having it read out, he duly accepted it according to prescribed rule; and having honoured those messengers greatly and with respect, he sent them on their way.
वाचयित्वा च तां (vācayitvā ca tāṃ) — and having had it readसम्यग्स्वीचकार विधानतः (samyagsvīcakāra vidhānataḥ) — he duly accepted it according to prescribed ruleतज्जनान्यापयामास (tajjanānyāpayāmāsa) — he sent away those persons who brought itबहुसम्मान्य चादृतः (bahusammānya cādṛtaḥ) — having greatly honoured them, with respect
७ उवाच मुनिवर्गास्तान्कार्यं सम्यक् कृतं शुभम्। आगन्तव्यं विवाहे मे विवाहः स्वीकृतो मया॥ ७
uvāca munivargāstānkāryaṃ samyak kṛtaṃ śubham | āgantavyaṃ vivāhe me vivāhaḥ svīkṛto mayā 7 ||
उन्होंने उस मुनिसमूहसे कहा—आपलोगोंने यह मंगलकार्य भलीभाँति सम्पन्न किया है; मेरे विवाहमें आपको अवश्य आना है, क्योंकि मैंने विवाह स्वीकार कर लिया है।
He said to that group of sages, "This auspicious task has been well accomplished; you must come to my wedding, for I have accepted the marriage."
उवाच मुनिवर्गास्तान् (uvāca munivargāstān) — he said to that group of sagesकार्यं सम्यक् कृतं शुभम् (kāryaṃ samyak kṛtaṃ śubham) — the auspicious task has been well accomplishedआगन्तव्यं विवाहे मे (āgantavyaṃ vivāhe me) — you must come to my weddingविवाहः स्वीकृतो मया (vivāhaḥ svīkṛto mayā) — for I have accepted the marriage
८ इत्याकर्ण्य वचः शम्भोः प्रहृष्टास्ते प्रणम्य तम्। परिक्रम्य ययुर्धाम शंसन्तः स्वं विधिं परम्॥ ८
ityākarṇya vacaḥ śambhoḥ prahṛṣṭāste praṇamya tam | parikramya yayurdhāma śaṃsantaḥ svaṃ vidhiṃ param 8 ||
शम्भुके इन वचनोंको सुनकर वे अत्यन्त प्रसन्न हुए और उन्हें प्रणामकर तथा परिक्रमा करके अपने परम सौभाग्यकी सराहना करते हुए अपने-अपने धाम चले गये।
Hearing these words of Śambhu, they, filled with delight, bowed to him, circumambulated him, and went to their own abodes, praising their own supreme good fortune.
इत्याकर्ण्य वचः शम्भोः (ityākarṇya vacaḥ śambhoḥ) — hearing these words of Śambhuप्रहृष्टास्ते प्रणम्य तम् (prahṛṣṭāste praṇamya tam) — they, delighted, bowed to himपरिक्रम्य ययुर्धाम (parikramya yayurdhāma) — and circling him, went to their abodesशंसन्तः स्वं विधिं परम् (śaṃsantaḥ svaṃ vidhiṃ param) — praising their own supreme good fortune
९ अथ देवेश्वरः शम्भुः सामरस्त्वां मुने द्रुतम्। लौकिकाचारमाश्रित्य महालीलाकरः प्रभुः॥ ९
atha deveśvaraḥ śambhuḥ sāmarastvāṃ mune drutam | laukikācāramāśritya mahālīlākaraḥ prabhuḥ 9 ||
हे मुने! तब देवताओंके स्वामी शम्भुने, अमरगणोंसहित, लौकिकाचारका आश्रय लेकर, महालीला करनेवाले प्रभुने शीघ्र ही आपका स्मरण किया।
Then Śambhu, lord of the gods, together with the immortals, quickly thought of you, O sage — the Lord, ever the doer of great līlā, resorting to worldly custom.
NoteThis pāda leaves the finite verb of remembrance grammatically elliptical ('सामरस्त्वां मुने द्रुतम्' has no explicit verb of recollection); the sense 'quickly called you to mind' is understood from the connected narrative rather than stated outright, as printed.

१० त्वमागतः परप्रीत्या प्रशंसंस्त्वं विधिं परम्। प्रणमंश्च नतस्कन्धो विनीतात्मा कृताञ्जलिः॥ १०
tvamāgataḥ paraprītyā praśaṃsaṃstvaṃ vidhiṃ param | praṇamaṃśca nataskandho vinītātmā kṛtāñjaliḥ 10 ||
आप अत्यन्त प्रसन्नतासे अपने सौभाग्यकी प्रशंसा करते हुए, कन्धे झुकाकर प्रणाम करते हुए, विनम्र हृदयसे हाथ जोड़कर वहाँ आये।
You came, with the greatest joy, praising your own great fortune, bowing with lowered shoulders, humble of heart, your hands folded in reverence.
त्वमागतः परप्रीत्या (tvamāgataḥ paraprītyā) — you came, with the greatest joyप्रशंसंस्त्वं विधिं परम् (praśaṃsaṃstvaṃ vidhiṃ param) — praising your own great fortuneप्रणमंश्च नतस्कन्धो (praṇamaṃśca nataskandho) — and bowing, your shoulders loweredविनीतात्मा कृताञ्जलिः (vinītātmā kṛtāñjaliḥ) — humble of heart, hands folded in reverence
११ अस्तौत्सुजयशब्दानि समुच्चार्य मुहुर्मुहुः। निदेशं प्रार्थयंस्तस्य प्रशंसंस्त्वं विधिं मुने॥ ११
astautsujayaśabdāni samuccārya muhurmuhuḥ | nideśaṃ prārthayaṃstasya praśaṃsaṃstvaṃ vidhiṃ mune 11 ||
हे मुने! आपने बार-बार जय-जयकारका शब्द उच्चारणकर उनकी स्तुति की, उनकी आज्ञा चाहते हुए तथा अपने भाग्यकी सराहना करते हुए।
You praised him, uttering auspicious cries of victory again and again, seeking his command, praising your own destiny, O sage.
अस्तौत्सुजयशब्दानि (astautsujayaśabdāni) — you praised him with cries of victoryसमुच्चार्य मुहुर्मुहुः (samuccārya muhurmuhuḥ) — uttering them again and againनिदेशं प्रार्थयंस्तस्य (nideśaṃ prārthayaṃstasya) — seeking his commandप्रशंसंस्त्वं विधिं मुने (praśaṃsaṃstvaṃ vidhiṃ mune) — praising your own destiny, O sage
१२ ततः शम्भुःप्रहृष्टात्मा दर्शयँल्लौकिकीं गतिम्। उवाच मुनिवर्य त्वां प्रीणयन् शुभया गिरा॥ १२
tataḥ śambhuḥprahṛṣṭātmā darśayaṁllaukikīṃ gatim | uvāca munivarya tvāṃ prīṇayan śubhayā girā 12 ||
तब हर्षित हृदयवाले शम्भुने लौकिक व्यवहार दिखाते हुए, हे मुनिश्रेष्ठ, शुभ वाणीसे आपको प्रसन्न करते हुए आपसे कहा।
Then Śambhu, his heart delighted, displaying worldly conduct, spoke to you, O best of sages, gladdening you with auspicious words.
ततः शम्भुः प्रहृष्टात्मा (tataḥ śambhuḥ prahṛṣṭātmā) — then Śambhu, his heart delightedदर्शयँल्लौकिकीं गतिम् (darśayaṁllaukikīṃ gatim) — displaying worldly conductउवाच मुनिवर्य त्वां (uvāca munivarya tvāṃ) — spoke to you, O best of sagesप्रीणयन् शुभया गिरा (prīṇayan śubhayā girā) — gladdening you with auspicious speech
१३ प्रीत्या शृणु मुनिश्रेष्ठ ह्यस्मत्तोऽद्य वदामि ते। ब्रुवे तत्त्वां प्रियो मे यद्भक्तराजशिरोमणिः॥ १३
prītyā śṛṇu muniśreṣṭha hyasmatto'dya vadāmi te | bruve tattvāṃ priyo me yadbhaktarājaśiromaṇiḥ 13 ||
हे मुनिश्रेष्ठ! मैं जो कुछ आज आपसे कहता हूँ, उसे प्रेमपूर्वक सुनिये। मैं यह इसलिये कहता हूँ कि आप मेरे प्रिय तथा भक्तराजोंमें शिरोमणि हैं।
Listen with love, O best of sages, to what I now say to you; I tell you this because you are dear to me, being the crest-jewel among royal devotees.
प्रीत्या शृणु मुनिश्रेष्ठ (prītyā śṛṇu muniśreṣṭha) — listen with love, O best of sagesह्यस्मत्तोऽद्य वदामि ते (hyasmatto'dya vadāmi te) — to what I now say to youब्रुवे तत्त्वां प्रियो मे (bruve tattvāṃ priyo me) — I tell you this because you are dear to meयद्भक्तराजशिरोमणिः (yadbhaktarājaśiromaṇiḥ) — because you are the crest-jewel among royal devotees
१४ कृतं महत्तपो देव्या पार्वत्या तव शासनात्। तस्यै वरो मया दत्तः पतित्वे तोषितेन वै॥ १४
kṛtaṃ mahattapo devyā pārvatyā tava śāsanāt | tasyai varo mayā dattaḥ patitve toṣitena vai 14 ||
आपके ही आदेशसे देवी पार्वतीने महान् तपस्या की थी; उससे संतुष्ट होकर मैंने उन्हें पतिरूपमें प्राप्त होनेका वरदान दिया है।
By your instruction, the goddess Pārvatī performed great austerity; pleased with her, I have granted her the boon of my becoming her husband.
कृतं महत्तपो देव्या (kṛtaṃ mahattapo devyā) — great austerity was performed by the goddessपार्वत्या तव शासनात् (pārvatyā tava śāsanāt) — Pārvatī, by your instructionतस्यै वरो मया दत्तः (tasyai varo mayā dattaḥ) — a boon was given by me to herपतित्वे तोषितेन वै (patitve toṣitena vai) — being pleased, of becoming her husband
१५ करिष्येऽहं विवाहं च तस्या वश्यो हि भक्तितः। सप्तर्षिभिः साधितं च तल्लग्नं शोधितं च तैः॥ १५
kariṣye'haṃ vivāhaṃ ca tasyā vaśyo hi bhaktitaḥ | saptarṣibhiḥ sādhitaṃ ca tallagnaṃ śodhitaṃ ca taiḥ 15 ||
मैं उसकी भक्तिके वशीभूत होकर अब विवाह करूँगा; सप्तर्षियोंने सारी व्यवस्था कर दी है और विवाहका शुभ लग्न भी निश्चित कर दिया है।
I shall now perform the marriage, being subdued indeed by her devotion; the seven sages have made the arrangements and determined the auspicious hour.
करिष्येऽहं विवाहं च (kariṣye'haṃ vivāhaṃ ca) — I shall now perform the marriageतस्या वश्यो हि भक्तितः (tasyā vaśyo hi bhaktitaḥ) — being subdued indeed by her devotionसप्तर्षिभिः साधितं च (saptarṣibhiḥ sādhitaṃ ca) — the arrangement has been made by the seven sagesतल्लग्नं शोधितं च तैः (tallagnaṃ śodhitaṃ ca taiḥ) — and the auspicious hour determined by them
१६ अद्यतः सप्तमे चाह्नि तद्भविष्यति नारद। महोत्सवं करिष्यामि लौकिकीं गतिमाश्रितः॥ १६
adyataḥ saptame cāhni tadbhaviṣyati nārada | mahotsavaṃ kariṣyāmi laukikīṃ gatimāśritaḥ 16 ||
हे नारद! वह विवाह आजसे सातवें दिन होगा। मैं लोकरीतिका आश्रय लेकर एक महान् उत्सव करूँगा।
O Nārada, it will take place on the seventh day from today; I shall hold a great festival, resorting to worldly custom.
अद्यतः सप्तमे चाह्नि (adyataḥ saptame cāhni) — on the seventh day from todayतद्भविष्यति नारद (tadbhaviṣyati nārada) — that will take place, O Nāradaमहोत्सवं करिष्यामि (mahotsavaṃ kariṣyāmi) — I shall hold a great festivalलौकिकीं गतिमाश्रितः (laukikīṃ gatimāśritaḥ) — resorting to worldly custom
१७ इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य शंकरस्य परात्मनः। प्रसन्नधीः प्रभुं नत्वा तात त्वं वाक्यमब्रवीः॥ १७
iti śrutvā vacastasya śaṃkarasya parātmanaḥ | prasannadhīḥ prabhuṃ natvā tāta tvaṃ vākyamabravīḥ 17 ||
परमात्मा शंकरके ये वचन सुनकर, हे तात, प्रसन्नचित्त होकर प्रभुको प्रणामकर आपने यह वचन कहा।
Hearing these words of Śaṅkara, the supreme soul, you, O son, your mind delighted, bowed to the Lord and spoke these words.
इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य (iti śrutvā vacastasya) — hearing these words of hisशंकरस्य परात्मनः (śaṃkarasya parātmanaḥ) — of Śaṅkara, the supreme soulप्रसन्नधीः प्रभुं नत्वा (prasannadhīḥ prabhuṃ natvā) — with delighted mind, bowing to the Lordतात त्वं वाक्यमब्रवीः (tāta tvaṃ vākyamabravīḥ) — O son, you spoke these words
१८ भवतस्तु व्रतमिदं भक्तवश्यो भवान्मतः। सम्यक् कृतं च भवता पार्वतीमानसेप्सितम्॥ १८
bhavatastu vratamidaṃ bhaktavaśyo bhavānmataḥ | samyak kṛtaṃ ca bhavatā pārvatīmānasepsitam 18 ||
यह तो आपका व्रत ही है कि आप भक्तोंके अधीन माने जाते हैं; आपने पार्वतीके मनकी अभिलाषाको भलीभाँति पूर्ण किया है।
This indeed is your vow, that you are held to be subject to your devotees; well have you done what Pārvatī's heart desired.
भवतस्तु व्रतमिदं (bhavatastu vratamidaṃ) — this indeed is your vowभक्तवश्यो भवान्मतः (bhaktavaśyo bhavānmataḥ) — that you are held to be subject to your devoteesसम्यक् कृतं च भवता (samyak kṛtaṃ ca bhavatā) — and well have you doneपार्वतीमानसेप्सितम् (pārvatīmānasepsitam) — what was desired in Pārvatī's heart
१९ कार्यं मत्सदृशं किञ्चित्कथनीयं त्वया विभो। मत्वा स्वसेवकं मां हि कृपां कुरु नमोऽस्तु ते॥ १९
kāryaṃ matsadṛśaṃ kiñcitkathanīyaṃ tvayā vibho | matvā svasevakaṃ māṃ hi kṛpāṃ kuru namo'stu te 19 ||
हे विभो! मेरे योग्य जो भी कार्य हो, वह आप मुझसे कहें; मुझे अपना सेवक मानकर मुझपर कृपा कीजिये, आपको प्रणाम है।
Whatever task is suited to one like me, O mighty Lord, should be told to me by you; considering me your own servant, show me your grace — salutation to you.
कार्यं मत्सदृशं किञ्चित् (kāryaṃ matsadṛśaṃ kiñcit) — whatever task is suited to one like meकथनीयं त्वया विभो (kathanīyaṃ tvayā vibho) — should be told by you, O mighty lordमत्वा स्वसेवकं मां हि (matvā svasevakaṃ māṃ hi) — considering me indeed your own servantकृपां कुरु नमोऽस्तु ते (kṛpāṃ kuru namo'stu te) — show grace; salutation to you
२० इत्युक्तस्तु त्वया शम्भुः शंकरो भक्तवत्सलः। प्रत्युवाच प्रसन्नात्मा सादरं त्वां मुनीश्वर॥ २०
ityuktastu tvayā śambhuḥ śaṃkaro bhaktavatsalaḥ | pratyuvāca prasannātmā sādaraṃ tvāṃ munīśvara 20 ||
हे मुनीश्वर! आपके इस प्रकार कहनेपर भक्तवत्सल शंकर शम्भुने प्रसन्नचित्त होकर आपको आदरपूर्वक उत्तर दिया।
Thus addressed by you, Śambhu — Śaṅkara, ever affectionate to his devotees — his heart pleased, replied to you respectfully, O lord of sages.
इत्युक्तस्तु त्वया शम्भुः (ityuktastu tvayā śambhuḥ) — thus addressed by you, Śambhuशंकरो भक्तवत्सलः (śaṃkaro bhaktavatsalaḥ) — Śaṅkara, ever affectionate to his devoteesप्रत्युवाच प्रसन्नात्मा (pratyuvāca prasannātmā) — replied, his heart pleasedसादरं त्वां मुनीश्वर (sādaraṃ tvāṃ munīśvara) — to you respectfully, O lord of sages
२१ विष्णुप्रभृतिदेवांश्च मुनीन्सिद्धानपि ध्रुवम्। त्वं निमन्त्रय मद्वाण्या मुनेऽन्यानपि सर्वतः॥ २१
viṣṇuprabhṛtidevāṃśca munīnsiddhānapi dhruvam | tvaṃ nimantraya madvāṇyā mune'nyānapi sarvataḥ 21 ||
हे मुने! आप मेरी ओरसे विष्णु आदि देवताओं, मुनियों, सिद्धों तथा अन्य सभीको भी चारों ओर जाकर निमन्त्रण दीजिये।
Invite, O sage, in my own name, the gods beginning with Viṣṇu, the sages, the Siddhas, and indeed all others from every quarter.
विष्णुप्रभृतिदेवांश्च (viṣṇuprabhṛtidevāṃśca) — and the gods beginning with Viṣṇuमुनीन्सिद्धानपि ध्रुवम् (munīnsiddhānapi dhruvam) — the sages, and the Siddhas too, surelyत्वं निमन्त्रय मद्वाण्या (tvaṃ nimantraya madvāṇyā) — do you invite, with my own wordमुनेऽन्यानपि सर्वतः (mune'nyānapi sarvataḥ) — and others too, O sage, from every quarter
२२ सर्व आयान्तु सोत्साहाः सर्वशोभासमन्विताः। सस्त्रीसुतगणाः प्रीत्या मम शासनगौरवात्॥ २२
sarva āyāntu sotsāhāḥ sarvaśobhāsamanvitāḥ | sastrīsutagaṇāḥ prītyā mama śāsanagauravāt 22 ||
वे सब उत्साहपूर्वक, समस्त शोभासे युक्त होकर, अपनी स्त्री-पुत्र तथा गणोंसहित मेरी आज्ञाके गौरवसे प्रसन्नतापूर्वक आयें।
Let them all come with enthusiasm, adorned with every splendour, together with their wives, sons and hosts, joyfully, out of respect for my command.
सर्व आयान्तु सोत्साहाः (sarva āyāntu sotsāhāḥ) — let all come with enthusiasmसर्वशोभासमन्विताः (sarvaśobhāsamanvitāḥ) — adorned with every splendourसस्त्रीसुतगणाः प्रीत्या (sastrīsutagaṇāḥ prītyā) — together with their wives, sons and hosts, joyfullyमम शासनगौरवात् (mama śāsanagauravāt) — out of respect for my command
२३ नागमिष्यन्ति ये त्वत्र मद्विवाहोत्सवे मुने। ते स्वकीया न मन्तव्या मया देवादयः खलु॥ २३
nāgamiṣyanti ye tvatra madvivāhotsave mune | te svakīyā na mantavyā mayā devādayaḥ khalu 23 ||
हे मुने! जो लोग मेरे इस विवाहोत्सवमें यहाँ नहीं आयेंगे, चाहे वे देवता ही क्यों न हों, मैं उन्हें अपना नहीं मानूँगा।
Those who will not come here to my wedding festival, O sage — whether gods or others — I shall surely not consider them my own.
नागमिष्यन्ति ये त्वत्र (nāgamiṣyanti ye tvatra) — those who will not come hereमद्विवाहोत्सवे मुने (madvivāhotsave mune) — to my wedding festival, O sageते स्वकीया न मन्तव्या (te svakīyā na mantavyā) — they are not to be considered my ownमया देवादयः खलु (mayā devādayaḥ khalu) — by me, the gods and others indeed
२४ इतीशाज्ञां ततो धृत्वा भवान् शङ्करवल्लभः। सर्वान्निमन्त्रयामास तं तं गत्वा द्रुतं मुने॥ २४
itīśājñāṃ tato dhṛtvā bhavān śaṅkaravallabhaḥ | sarvānnimantrayāmāsa taṃ taṃ gatvā drutaṃ mune 24 ||
हे मुने! तब शिवजीकी इस आज्ञाको ग्रहणकर शंकरप्रिय आपने प्रत्येकके पास शीघ्र जाकर सबको निमन्त्रित किया।
Then, O sage, taking up this command of the Lord, you, dear to Śaṅkara, went quickly to each one and invited them all.
इतीशाज्ञां ततो धृत्वा (itīśājñāṃ tato dhṛtvā) — then, taking up this command of the Lordभवान् शङ्करवल्लभः (bhavān śaṅkaravallabhaḥ) — you, dear to Śaṅkaraसर्वान्निमन्त्रयामास (sarvānnimantrayāmāsa) — invited everyoneतं तं गत्वा द्रुतं मुने (taṃ taṃ gatvā drutaṃ mune) — going quickly to each one, O sage

Having quickly come near to Śambhu, O best of sages, you, having completed that errand, remained there, O Nārada, having received his further command.

शिवजी भी उत्कण्ठितचित्त होकर उनके आगमनकी उत्सुकतासे प्रतीक्षा करने लगे, और उनके सभी गण उत्सव मनाते हुए चारों दिशाओंमें नृत्य करने लगे।
Śiva too waited, filled with longing, eager for their arrival, while all his own gaṇas celebrated and danced in every direction.

At this very time, having arrayed his own attire, Acyuta quickly came to Kailāsa with his retinue.

२८ शिवं प्रणम्य सद्भक्त्या सदारः सदलो मुदा। तदाज्ञां प्राप्य सन्तस्थौ सुस्थाने प्रीतमानसः॥ २८
śivaṃ praṇamya sadbhaktyā sadāraḥ sadalo mudā | tadājñāṃ prāpya santasthau susthāne prītamānasaḥ 28 ||
सच्ची भक्तिसे शिवजीको प्रणामकर, अपनी पत्नी तथा परिवारसहित प्रसन्नतापूर्वक, उनकी आज्ञा प्राप्तकर वे प्रसन्नचित्त होकर उचित स्थानपर बैठ गये।
Bowing to Śiva with true devotion, together with his wife and host, joyfully, and receiving his leave, he remained in a fitting place, his mind delighted.
शिवं प्रणम्य सद्भक्त्या (śivaṃ praṇamya sadbhaktyā) — bowing to Śiva with true devotionसदारः सदलो मुदा (sadāraḥ sadalo mudā) — together with his wife and host, joyfullyतदाज्ञां प्राप्य सन्तस्थौ (tadājñāṃ prāpya santasthau) — having received his leave, he remainedसुस्थाने प्रीतमानसः (susthāne prītamānasaḥ) — in a fitting place, his mind delighted
२९ तथाहं स्वगणैराशु कैलासमगमं मुदा। प्रभुं प्रणम्यातिष्ठं वै सानन्दः स्वगणान्वितः॥ २९
tathāhaṃ svagaṇairāśu kailāsamagamaṃ mudā | prabhuṃ praṇamyātiṣṭhaṃ vai sānandaḥ svagaṇānvitaḥ 29 ||
तब मैं भी अपने गणोंसहित शीघ्र प्रसन्नतापूर्वक कैलासपर गया और प्रभुको प्रणामकर अपने गणोंसहित आनन्दित होकर वहाँ बैठ गया।
Then I too went quickly to Kailāsa with my own hosts, joyfully; and having bowed to the Lord, I remained there delighted, together with my own hosts.
तथाहं स्वगणैराशु (tathāhaṃ svagaṇairāśu) — then I too, quickly with my own hostsकैलासमगमं मुदा (kailāsamagamaṃ mudā) — went joyfully to Kailāsaप्रभुं प्रणम्यातिष्ठं वै (prabhuṃ praṇamyātiṣṭhaṃ vai) — and having bowed to the Lord, I remainedसानन्दः स्वगणान्वितः (sānandaḥ svagaṇānvitaḥ) — delighted, together with my own hosts
३० इन्द्रादयो लोकपाला आययुः सपरिच्छदाः। तथैवालंकृतास्सर्वे सोत्सवास्सकलत्रकाः॥ ३०
indrādayo lokapālā āyayuḥ saparicchadāḥ | tathaivālaṃkṛtāssarve sotsavāssakalatrakāḥ 30 ||
इन्द्र आदि लोकपाल अपने परिवारोंसहित आये, वे सभी उसी प्रकार अलंकृत तथा अपनी पत्नियोंसहित उत्सवपूर्ण थे।
The guardians of the quarters, beginning with Indra, came with their retinues, all likewise adorned, joyful, together with their wives.

३१ तथैवं मुनयो नागास्सिद्धा उपसुरास्तथा। आययुश्चापरेऽपीह सोत्सवाः सुनिमन्त्रिताः॥ ३१
tathaivaṃ munayo nāgāssiddhā upasurāstathā | āyayuścāpare'pīha sotsavāḥ sunimantritāḥ 31 ||
इसी प्रकार मुनि, नाग, सिद्ध तथा उपदेवगण भी, और अन्य लोग भी, विधिवत् निमन्त्रित होकर उत्सवपूर्वक वहाँ आये।
Likewise the sages, the nāgas, the Siddhas and the demigods, and others too, came here rejoicing, duly invited.
तथैवं मुनयो नागाः (tathaivaṃ munayo nāgāḥ) — likewise the sages, the nāgasसिद्धा उपसुरास्तथा (siddhā upasurāstathā) — the Siddhas, and the demigods tooआययुश्चापरेऽपीह (āyayuścāpare'pīha) — and others too came hereसोत्सवाः सुनिमन्त्रिताः (sotsavāḥ sunimantritāḥ) — rejoicing, duly invited
३२ महेश्वरस्तदा तत्रागतानां च पृथक् पृथक्। सर्वेषाममराद्यानां सत्कारं व्यदधान्मुदा॥ ३२
maheśvarastadā tatrāgatānāṃ ca pṛthak pṛthak | sarveṣāmamarādyānāṃ satkāraṃ vyadadhānmudā 32 ||
तब महेश्वरने वहाँ आये हुए देवता आदि सभीका प्रसन्नतापूर्वक अलग-अलग सत्कार किया।
Then Maheśvara joyfully performed the due honours, one by one, for all who had arrived there, beginning with the immortals.
महेश्वरस्तदा तत्रागतानां (maheśvarastadā tatrāgatānāṃ) — then Maheśvara, of those who had arrived thereच पृथक् पृथक् (ca pṛthak pṛthak) — each one separatelyसर्वेषाममराद्यानां (sarveṣāmamarādyānāṃ) — of all of them, beginning with the immortalsसत्कारं व्यदधान्मुदा (satkāraṃ vyadadhānmudā) — joyfully performed the due honours
३३ अथोत्सवो महानासीत्कैलासे परमोऽद्भुतः। नृत्यादिकं तदा चक्रुर्यथायोग्यं सुरस्त्रियः॥ ३३
athotsavo mahānāsītkailāse paramo'dbhutaḥ | nṛtyādikaṃ tadā cakruryathāyogyaṃ surastriyaḥ 33 ||
तब कैलासपर एक परम अद्भुत उत्सव होने लगा; देवांगनाओंने यथायोग्य नृत्य आदि प्रारम्भ कर दिया।
Then a supremely wondrous festival arose on Kailāsa; the celestial women performed dancing and other fitting entertainments.
अथोत्सवो महानासीत् (athotsavo mahānāsīt) — then a great festival aroseकैलासे परमोऽद्भुतः (kailāse paramo'dbhutaḥ) — on Kailāsa, supremely wondrousनृत्यादिकं तदा चक्रुः (nṛtyādikaṃ tadā cakruḥ) — dancing and other performances were then madeयथायोग्यं सुरस्त्रियः (yathāyogyaṃ surastriyaḥ) — fittingly, by the celestial women
३४ एतस्मिन्समये देवा विष्ण्वाद्या ये समागताः। यात्रां कारयितुं शम्भोस्तत्रोषुस्तेऽखिला मुने॥ ३४
etasminsamaye devā viṣṇvādyā ye samāgatāḥ | yātrāṃ kārayituṃ śambhostatroṣuste'khilā mune 34 ||
हे मुने! इस समय विष्णु आदि जो देवगण वहाँ एकत्र हुए थे, वे सब शम्भुकी बरात निकलवानेके लिये वहीं ठहर गये।
At this time, O sage, all the gods who had gathered, beginning with Viṣṇu, stayed there in order to help bring about Śambhu's wedding procession.
एतस्मिन्समये देवा (etasminsamaye devā) — at this time, the godsविष्ण्वाद्या ये समागताः (viṣṇvādyā ye samāgatāḥ) — who had gathered, beginning with Viṣṇuयात्रां कारयितुं शम्भोः (yātrāṃ kārayituṃ śambhoḥ) — in order to bring about Śambhu's processionतत्रोषुस्तेऽखिला मुने (tatroṣuste'khilā mune) — all of them stayed there, O sage
३५ शिवाज्ञप्तास्तदा सर्वे मदीयमिति यन्त्रिताः। शिवकार्यमिदं सर्वं चक्रिरे शिवसेवनम्॥ ३५
śivājñaptāstadā sarve madīyamiti yantritāḥ | śivakāryamidaṃ sarvaṃ cakrire śivasevanam 35 ||
तब शिवजीकी आज्ञासे प्रेरित होकर सब लोग "यह मेरा ही कार्य है" ऐसा मानकर शिवजीके इस सम्पूर्ण कार्यको शिवसेवाके रूपमें सम्पन्न करने लगे।
Then all, commanded by Śiva and bound by the thought "this is my own task," performed this entire task of Śiva's as an act of service to him.
शिवाज्ञप्तास्तदा सर्वे (śivājñaptāstadā sarve) — then all, commanded by Śivaमदीयमिति यन्त्रिताः (madīyamiti yantritāḥ) — bound by the thought 'this is my own task'शिवकार्यमिदं सर्वं (śivakāryamidaṃ sarvaṃ) — this entire task of Śiva'sचक्रिरे शिवसेवनम् (cakrire śivasevanam) — they performed as service to Śiva
३६ मातरः सप्त तास्तत्र शिवभूषाविधिं परम्। चक्रिरे च मुदा युक्ता यथायोग्यं तथा पुनः॥ ३६
mātaraḥ sapta tāstatra śivabhūṣāvidhiṃ param | cakrire ca mudā yuktā yathāyogyaṃ tathā punaḥ 36 ||
वहाँ सप्तमातृकाओंने प्रसन्नतापूर्वक मिलकर शिवजीके शृंगारकी उत्तम विधि यथायोग्य रूपसे सम्पन्न की।
There the seven Mother-goddesses, joined together with joy, duly and fittingly performed the supreme rite of adorning Śiva.
मातरः सप्त तास्तत्र (mātaraḥ sapta tāstatra) — the seven Mothers thereशिवभूषाविधिं परम् (śivabhūṣāvidhiṃ param) — the supreme rite of adorning Śivaचक्रिरे च मुदा युक्ता (cakrire ca mudā yuktā) — performed, joined with joyयथायोग्यं तथा पुनः (yathāyogyaṃ tathā punaḥ) — duly and fittingly, once more
३७ तस्य स्वाभाविको वेषो भूषाविधिरभूत्तदा। तस्येच्छया मुनिश्रेष्ठ परमेशस्य सुप्रभोः॥ ३७
tasya svābhāviko veṣo bhūṣāvidhirabhūttadā | tasyecchayā muniśreṣṭha parameśasya suprabhoḥ 37 ||
हे मुनिश्रेष्ठ! उन परम तेजस्वी परमेश्वरकी अपनी ही इच्छासे उनका स्वाभाविक वेष ही उस समय शृंगार-विधि बन गया।
O best of sages, by the will of the supreme, resplendent Lord himself, his own natural form became then the mode of his adornment.
तस्य स्वाभाविको वेषो (tasya svābhāviko veṣo) — his natural attireभूषाविधिरभूत्तदा (bhūṣāvidhirabhūttadā) — became then the mode of his adornmentतस्येच्छया मुनिश्रेष्ठ (tasyecchayā muniśreṣṭha) — by his own will, O best of sagesपरमेशस्य सुप्रभोः (parameśasya suprabhoḥ) — of the supreme, resplendent Lord
३८ चन्द्रश्च मुकुटस्थाने सान्निध्यमकरोत्तदा। लोचनं सुन्दरं ह्यासीत्तृतीयं तिलकं शुभम्॥ ३८
candraśca mukuṭasthāne sānnidhyamakarottadā | locanaṃ sundaraṃ hyāsīttṛtīyaṃ tilakaṃ śubham 38 ||
चन्द्रमाने मुकुटके स्थानपर अपना सान्निध्य किया, और उनका सुन्दर तीसरा नेत्र ही शुभ तिलकके रूपमें विराजमान हो गया।
The moon then took its place in the position of a crown, and his beautiful third eye became indeed the auspicious tilaka mark.
चन्द्रश्च मुकुटस्थाने (candraśca mukuṭasthāne) — and the moon, in the place of a crownसान्निध्यमकरोत्तदा (sānnidhyamakarottadā) — then took its placeलोचनं सुन्दरं ह्यासीत् (locanaṃ sundaraṃ hyāsīt) — the beautiful eye indeed was thereतृतीयं तिलकं शुभम् (tṛtīyaṃ tilakaṃ śubham) — the third one, [as] the auspicious tilaka
३९ कर्णाभरणरूपौ च यौ हि सर्पौ प्रकीर्तितौ। कुण्डलेऽभवतां तस्य नानारत्नान्विते मुने॥ ३९
karṇābharaṇarūpau ca yau hi sarpau prakīrtitau | kuṇḍale'bhavatāṃ tasya nānāratnānvite mune 39 ||
हे मुने! उनके दो सर्प, जिन्हें कर्णाभूषणके रूपमें कहा गया है, नाना रत्नोंसे जड़े हुएसे उनके कुण्डल बन गये।
O sage, those two serpents, it is said, became his two earrings, in the form of ear-ornaments set, as it were, with manifold gems.
कर्णाभरणरूपौ च (karṇābharaṇarūpau ca) — and in the form of ear-ornamentsयौ हि सर्पौ प्रकीर्तितौ (yau hi sarpau prakīrtitau) — those two serpents, so it is saidकुण्डलेऽभवतां तस्य (kuṇḍale'bhavatāṃ tasya) — became his two earringsनानारत्नान्विते मुने (nānāratnānvite mune) — O sage, as if set with manifold gems
४० अन्याङ्गसंस्थिताः सर्पाः तदङ्गाभरणानि च। बभूवुरतिरम्याणि नानारत्नमयानि च॥ ४०
anyāṅgasaṃsthitāḥ sarpāḥ tadaṅgābharaṇāni ca | babhūvuratiramyāṇi nānāratnamayāni ca 40 ||
उनके अंगोंपर स्थित अन्य सर्प उनके शरीरके अन्य आभूषण बन गये, जो अत्यन्त रमणीय तथा नाना रत्नोंसे बने हुएसे जान पड़ते थे।
The other serpents residing on his limbs became his other bodily ornaments, exceedingly beautiful and, as it were, made of manifold gems.

४१ विभूतिरंगरागोऽभूच्चन्दनादिसमुद्भवः। तद्दुकूलमभूद्दिव्यं गजचर्मादि सुन्दरम्॥ ४१
vibhūtiraṃgarāgo'bhūccandanādisamudbhavaḥ | taddukūlamabhūddivyaṃ gajacarmādi sundaram 41 ||
उनकी विभूति चन्दनादिसे उत्पन्न अंगरागके समान हो गयी, और उनका सुन्दर गजचर्म आदि दिव्य दुकूल-वस्त्रके समान हो गया।
The sacred ash became the fragrant unguent on his limbs, as if it had arisen from sandalwood and the like; the beautiful elephant-hide and the like became a divine silken garment.
विभूतिरंगरागोऽभूत् (vibhūtiraṃgarāgo'bhūt) — the ash became the unguent for his limbsचन्दनादिसमुद्भवः (candanādisamudbhavaḥ) — as though arisen from sandal and the likeतद्दुकूलमभूद्दिव्यं (taddukūlamabhūddivyaṃ) — that became a divine silken garmentगजचर्मादि सुन्दरम् (gajacarmādi sundaram) — the beautiful elephant-hide and the like
४२ ईदृशं सुन्दरं रूपं जातं वर्णातिदुष्करम्। ईश्वरोऽपि स्वयं साक्षादैश्वर्यं लब्धवान्स्वतः॥ ४२
īdṛśaṃ sundaraṃ rūpaṃ jātaṃ varṇātiduṣkaram | īśvaro'pi svayaṃ sākṣādaiśvaryaṃ labdhavānsvataḥ 42 ||
इस प्रकार उनका ऐसा सुन्दर रूप हो गया, जिसका वर्णन करना अत्यन्त कठिन है; साक्षात् ईश्वर होनेके कारण उन्होंने स्वयं ही यह ऐश्वर्य प्राप्त कर लिया था।
Such a beautiful form came about, exceedingly difficult to describe — for the Lord himself, in person, had obtained this splendour spontaneously, from his own being.
ईदृशं सुन्दरं रूपं (īdṛśaṃ sundaraṃ rūpaṃ) — such a beautiful formजातं वर्णातिदुष्करम् (jātaṃ varṇātiduṣkaram) — came about, exceedingly difficult to describeईश्वरोऽपि स्वयं साक्षात् (īśvaro'pi svayaṃ sākṣāt) — the Lord himself, in personऐश्वर्यं लब्धवान्स्वतः (aiśvaryaṃ labdhavānsvataḥ) — had obtained this splendour of his own accord
४३ ततश्च सर्वे सुरपक्षदानवा नागाः पतङ्गाप्सरसो महर्षयः। समेत्य सर्वे शिवसन्निधिं तदा महोत्सवाः प्रोचुरहो मुदान्विताः॥ ४३
tataśca sarve surapakṣadānavā nāgāḥ pataṅgāpsaraso maharṣayaḥ | sametya sarve śivasannidhiṃ tadā mahotsavāḥ procuraho mudānvitāḥ 43 ||
तत्पश्चात् सभी देवता, दानवगण, नाग, पक्षी, अप्सराएँ तथा महर्षिगण शिवजीके समीप एकत्र होकर अत्यन्त प्रसन्नतापूर्वक महोत्सवके साथ बोल उठे।
Then all the gods and the demon-host, the nāgas, the winged ones, the apsarases and the great sages, having gathered together before Śiva, filled with delight, cried out in great festivity.
ततश्च सर्वे सुरपक्षदानवा (tataśca sarve surapakṣadānavā) — and then all the gods and the demon hostनागाः पतङ्गाप्सरसो महर्षयः (nāgāḥ pataṅgāpsaraso maharṣayaḥ) — the nāgas, the winged ones, the apsarases and the great sagesसमेत्य सर्वे शिवसन्निधिं तदा (sametya sarve śivasannidhiṃ tadā) — all having then assembled in Śiva's presenceमहोत्सवाः प्रोचुरहो मुदान्विताः (mahotsavāḥ procuraho mudānvitāḥ) — rejoicing greatly, exclaimed, filled with delight
४४ गच्छ गच्छ महादेव विवाहार्थं महेश्वर। गिरिजाया महादेव्याः सहास्माभिः कृपां कुरु॥ ४४
gaccha gaccha mahādeva vivāhārthaṃ maheśvara | girijāyā mahādevyāḥ sahāsmābhiḥ kṛpāṃ kuru 44 ||
हे महादेव! हे महेश्वर! विवाहके लिये गिरिजा महादेवीके पास चलिये और हमपर यह कृपा कीजिये कि हमारे साथ चलें।
"Go, go, O great god, O Maheśvara, for the sake of your wedding with the great goddess Girijā — show us the favour of going with us."
गच्छ गच्छ महादेव (gaccha gaccha mahādeva) — go, go, O great godविवाहार्थं महेश्वर (vivāhārthaṃ maheśvara) — for the sake of the wedding, O Maheśvaraगिरिजाया महादेव्याः (girijāyā mahādevyāḥ) — with the great goddess Girijāसहास्माभिः कृपां कुरु (sahāsmābhiḥ kṛpāṃ kuru) — show us the favour of your company
४५ ततो विष्णुरुवाचेदं प्रस्तावसदृशं वचः। प्रणम्य शंकरं भक्त्या विज्ञानप्रीतमानसः॥ ४५
tato viṣṇuruvācedaṃ prastāvasadṛśaṃ vacaḥ | praṇamya śaṃkaraṃ bhaktyā vijñānaprītamānasaḥ 45 ||
तब विष्णुने प्रस्तावके अनुरूप ये वचन कहे; उनका मन ज्ञानसे प्रसन्न था और उन्होंने भक्तिपूर्वक शंकरको प्रणाम किया।
Then Viṣṇu, his mind delighted through true knowledge, bowed to Śaṅkara with devotion and spoke these words fitting the occasion.
ततो विष्णुरुवाचेदं (tato viṣṇuruvācedaṃ) — then Viṣṇu spoke theseप्रस्तावसदृशं वचः (prastāvasadṛśaṃ vacaḥ) — words fitting the occasionप्रणम्य शंकरं भक्त्या (praṇamya śaṃkaraṃ bhaktyā) — bowing to Śaṅkara with devotionविज्ञानप्रीतमानसः (vijñānaprītamānasaḥ) — his mind delighted with true knowledge
४६ देवदेव महादेव शरणागतवत्सल। कार्यकर्ता स्वभक्तानां विज्ञप्तिं शृणु मे प्रभो॥ ४६
devadeva mahādeva śaraṇāgatavatsala | kāryakartā svabhaktānāṃ vijñaptiṃ śṛṇu me prabho 46 ||
हे देवदेव! हे महादेव! हे शरणागतवत्सल! आप अपने भक्तोंका कार्य सिद्ध करनेवाले हैं; हे प्रभो! मेरा निवेदन सुनिये।
O god of gods, O great god, affectionate to those who take refuge in you, doer of the tasks of your own devotees — hear my petition, O Lord.
देवदेव महादेव (devadeva mahādeva) — O god of gods, O great godशरणागतवत्सल (śaraṇāgatavatsala) — O affectionate one to those who take refugeकार्यकर्ता स्वभक्तानां (kāryakartā svabhaktānāṃ) — doer of the tasks of your own devoteesविज्ञप्तिं शृणु मे प्रभो (vijñaptiṃ śṛṇu me prabho) — hear my petition, O Lord
४७ गृह्योक्तविधिना शम्भो स्वविवाहस्य शंकर। गिरीशसुतया देव्या कर्म कर्तुमिहार्हसि॥ ४७
gṛhyoktavidhinā śambho svavivāhasya śaṃkara | girīśasutayā devyā karma kartumihārhasi 47 ||
हे शम्भो! हे शंकर! आप गृह्यसूत्रकी विधिसे गिरीशसुता देवी पार्वतीके साथ अपने विवाहका कर्म यहाँ सम्पन्न करें, यही उचित है।
O Śambhu, O Śaṅkara, you ought here to perform, by the rite prescribed in the Gṛhyasūtra, the ceremony of your own marriage to the goddess, daughter of the mountain-lord.
गृह्योक्तविधिना शम्भो (gṛhyoktavidhinā śambho) — O Śambhu, by the rite prescribed in the Gṛhyasūtraस्वविवाहस्य शंकर (svavivāhasya śaṃkara) — of your own marriage, O Śaṅkaraगिरीशसुतया देव्या (girīśasutayā devyā) — with the goddess, daughter of the mountain-lordकर्म कर्तुमिहार्हसि (karma kartumihārhasi) — you ought here to perform the rite
४८ त्वया च क्रियमाणे तु विवाहस्य विधौ हर। स एव हि तथा लोके सर्वः सुख्यातिमाप्नुयात्॥ ४८
tvayā ca kriyamāṇe tu vivāhasya vidhau hara | sa eva hi tathā loke sarvaḥ sukhyātimāpnuyāt 48 ||
हे हर! जब विवाहकी विधि आपके द्वारा सम्पन्न की जायगी, तो वही विधि सारे लोकमें सर्वत्र सुख्यातिको प्राप्त होगी।
For when the rite of marriage, O Hara, is performed by you, that very rite will thereby gain, for the whole world, an auspicious renown.
त्वया च क्रियमाणे तु (tvayā ca kriyamāṇe tu) — and when it is performed by youविवाहस्य विधौ हर (vivāhasya vidhau hara) — in the rite of marriage, O Haraस एव हि तथा लोके (sa eva hi tathā loke) — that very rite, indeed, in the worldसर्वः सुख्यातिमाप्नुयात् (sarvaḥ sukhyātimāpnuyāt) — would gain, for all, a good and famous name
४९ मण्डपस्थापनं नान्दीमुखं तत्कुलधर्मतः। कारय प्रीतितो नाथ लोके स्वं ख्यापयन् यशः॥ ४९
maṇḍapasthāpanaṃ nāndīmukhaṃ tatkuladharmataḥ | kāraya prītito nātha loke svaṃ khyāpayan yaśaḥ 49 ||
हे नाथ! अपने कुलधर्मके अनुसार मण्डपस्थापन तथा नान्दीमुख-कृत्य प्रेमपूर्वक करवाइये और लोकमें अपने यशकी घोषणा कीजिये।
O Lord, lovingly have the pavilion set up and the nāndīmukha rite performed according to family custom, proclaiming your own glory to the world.
मण्डपस्थापनं नान्दीमुखं (maṇḍapasthāpanaṃ nāndīmukhaṃ) — the setting-up of the pavilion, the nāndīmukha riteतत्कुलधर्मतः (tatkuladharmataḥ) — according to that family customकारय प्रीतितो नाथ (kāraya prītito nātha) — have it done lovingly, O Lordलोके स्वं ख्यापयन् यशः (loke svaṃ khyāpayan yaśaḥ) — proclaiming your own glory to the world
५० एवमुक्तस्तदा शम्भुर्विष्णुना परमेश्वरः। लौकिकाचारनिरतो विधिना तच्चकार सः॥ ५०
evamuktastadā śambhurviṣṇunā parameśvaraḥ | laukikācāranirato vidhinā taccakāra saḥ 50 ||
विष्णुके इस प्रकार कहनेपर, परमेश्वर शम्भुने लौकिकाचारमें तत्पर होकर उस कार्यको विधिपूर्वक सम्पन्न किया।
Thus addressed by Viṣṇu, the supreme Lord Śambhu, devoted to worldly custom, performed that rite duly, according to rule.
एवमुक्तस्तदा शम्भुः (evamuktastadā śambhuḥ) — thus addressed, then Śambhuविष्णुना परमेश्वरः (viṣṇunā parameśvaraḥ) — by Viṣṇu, the supreme Lordलौकिकाचारनिरतो (laukikācāranirato) — devoted to worldly customविधिना तच्चकार सः (vidhinā taccakāra saḥ) — he performed that duly, according to rule
५१ अहं ह्याधिकृतस्तेन सर्वमभ्युदयोचितम्। अकुर्वं मुनिभिः प्रीत्या तत्र तत्कर्म चादरात्॥ ५१
ahaṃ hyādhikṛtastena sarvamabhyudayocitam | akurvaṃ munibhiḥ prītyā tatra tatkarma cādarāt 51 ||
उन्होंने मुझे इस सम्पूर्ण मंगल-कार्यके लिये अधिकृत किया था; मैंने मुनियोंके साथ प्रेम तथा आदरपूर्वक वहाँ वह कार्य सम्पन्न किया।
For I was indeed authorized by him with everything befitting the auspicious occasion; together with the sages, I performed that rite there with love and reverence.

दधीचिरुपमन्युश्च (dadhīcirupamanyuśca) — Dadhīci and Upamanyuभरद्वाजोऽकृतव्रणः (bharadvājo'kṛtavraṇaḥ) — Bharadvāja, Akṛtavraṇaपिप्पलादोऽथ कुशिकः (pippalādo'tha kuśikaḥ) — Pippalāda, and Kuśikaकौत्सो व्यासः सशिष्यकः (kautso vyāsaḥ saśiṣyakaḥ) — Kautsa, and Vyāsa together with his disciples
५५ एते चान्ये च बहव आगताः शिवसन्निधिम्। मया सुनोदितास्तत्र चक्रुस्ते विधिवत्क्रियाम्॥ ५५
ete cānye ca bahava āgatāḥ śivasannidhim | mayā sunoditāstatra cakruste vidhivatkriyām 55 ||
ये तथा अन्य बहुत-से ऋषिगण शिवजीके समीप आये; मेरे द्वारा भलीभाँति प्रेरित होकर उन्होंने वहाँ विधिपूर्वक कर्म सम्पन्न किया।
These and many other sages came into Śiva's presence; urged on well by me, they there performed the rite according to prescribed order.
एते चान्ये च बहवः (ete cānye ca bahavaḥ) — these and many other sagesआगताः शिवसन्निधिम् (āgatāḥ śivasannidhim) — came into Śiva's presenceमया सुनोदितास्तत्र (mayā sunoditāstatra) — urged well by me thereचक्रुस्ते विधिवत्क्रियाम् (cakruste vidhivatkriyām) — they performed the rite according to prescribed order
५६ वेदोक्तविधिना सर्वे वेदवेदाङ्गपारगाः। रक्षां चक्रुर्महेशस्य कृत्वा कौतुकमङ्गलम्॥ ५६
vedoktavidhinā sarve vedavedāṅgapāragāḥ | rakṣāṃ cakrurmaheśasya kṛtvā kautukamaṅgalam 56 ||
वेद-वेदांगके पारंगत उन सबने वेदोक्त विधिसे कौतुक-मंगल सम्पन्नकर महेशकी रक्षाका विधान किया।
All of them, masters of the Vedas and their auxiliary sciences, performed protective rites for Maheśa according to Vedic prescription, having first performed the kautuka-maṅgala rite.
वेदोक्तविधिना सर्वे (vedoktavidhinā sarve) — all, by the rite prescribed in the Vedasवेदवेदाङ्गपारगाः (vedavedāṅgapāragāḥ) — being masters of the Vedas and their auxiliary sciencesरक्षां चक्रुर्महेशस्य (rakṣāṃ cakrurmaheśasya) — performed protective rites for Maheśaकृत्वा कौतुकमङ्गलम् (kṛtvā kautukamaṅgalam) — having performed the kautuka-maṅgala rite
५७ ऋग्यजुस्सामसूक्तैस्तु तथा नानाविधैः परैः। मङ्गलानि च भूरीणि चक्रुः प्रीत्यर्षयोऽखिलाः॥ ५७
ṛgyajussāmasūktaistu tathā nānāvidhaiḥ paraiḥ | maṅgalāni ca bhūrīṇi cakruḥ prītyarṣayo'khilāḥ 57 ||
ऋक्, यजुः तथा साम-सूक्तोंसे एवं अन्य नाना प्रकारके मन्त्रोंसे सभी ऋषियोंने प्रेमपूर्वक अनेक मंगलपाठ किये।
And with hymns of the Ṛg, Yajur and Sāma Vedas, and with various other kinds of hymns, all the sages lovingly pronounced many auspicious blessings.
ऋग्यजुस्सामसूक्तैस्तु (ṛgyajussāmasūktaistu) — and with hymns of the Ṛg, Yajur and Sāma [Vedas]तथा नानाविधैः परैः (tathā nānāvidhaiḥ paraiḥ) — and with other various kinds of hymnsमङ्गलानि च भूरीणि (maṅgalāni ca bhūrīṇi) — many auspicious blessingsचक्रुः प्रीत्यर्षयोऽखिलाः (cakruḥ prītyarṣayo'khilāḥ) — all the sages performed, with love
५८ ग्रहाणां पूजनं प्रीत्या चक्रुस्ते शम्भुना मया। मण्डलस्थसुराणां च सर्वेषां विघ्नशान्तये॥ ५८
grahāṇāṃ pūjanaṃ prītyā cakruste śambhunā mayā | maṇḍalasthasurāṇāṃ ca sarveṣāṃ vighnaśāntaye 58 ||
उन्होंने शम्भु तथा मेरे सहित प्रेमपूर्वक ग्रहोंका तथा मण्डलमें स्थित समस्त देवताओंका विघ्नशान्तिके लिये पूजन किया।
They, together with Śambhu and myself, lovingly performed the worship of the planets, and of all the gods stationed in the ritual circle, for the pacifying of obstacles.
ग्रहाणां पूजनं प्रीत्या (grahāṇāṃ pūjanaṃ prītyā) — the worship of the planets, lovinglyचक्रुस्ते शम्भुना मया (cakruste śambhunā mayā) — they performed, together with Śambhu and myselfमण्डलस्थसुराणां च (maṇḍalasthasurāṇāṃ ca) — and of the gods stationed in the ritual circleसर्वेषां विघ्नशान्तये (sarveṣāṃ vighnaśāntaye) — of all of them, for the pacifying of obstacles
५९ ततश्शिवः सुसन्तुष्टः कृत्वा सर्वं यथोचितम्। लौकिकं वैदिकं कर्म ननाम च मुदा द्विजान्॥ ५९
tataśśivaḥ susantuṣṭaḥ kṛtvā sarvaṃ yathocitam | laukikaṃ vaidikaṃ karma nanāma ca mudā dvijān 59 ||
तब शिवजीने प्रसन्न होकर लौकिक तथा वैदिक कर्म यथोचित रूपसे सम्पन्नकर हर्षपूर्वक ब्राह्मणोंको प्रणाम किया।
Then Śiva, well satisfied, having performed everything fittingly, both worldly and Vedic rites, joyfully bowed to the twice-born.

६० अथ सर्वेश्वरो विप्रान्देवान्कृत्वा पुरस्सरान्। निस्ससार मुदा तस्मात्कैलासात्पर्वतोत्तमात्॥ ६०
atha sarveśvaro viprāndevānkṛtvā purassarān | nissasāra mudā tasmātkailāsātparvatottamāt 60 ||
तब सर्वेश्वर शिवजीने ब्राह्मणों तथा देवताओंको आगे करके उस कैलास पर्वतश्रेष्ठसे प्रसन्नतापूर्वक प्रस्थान किया।
Then the lord of all, placing the Brāhmaṇas and the gods at the head, set forth joyfully from Kailāsa, the foremost of mountains.
अथ सर्वेश्वरो विप्रान् (atha sarveśvaro viprān) — then the lord of all, [placing] the Brāhmaṇasदेवान्कृत्वा पुरस्सरान् (devānkṛtvā purassarān) — and the gods in the vanguardनिस्ससार मुदा तस्मात् (nissasāra mudā tasmāt) — set forth joyfully from thatकैलासात्पर्वतोत्तमात् (kailāsātparvatottamāt) — Kailāsa, the foremost of mountains
६१ बहिः कैलासकुधराच्छम्भुस्तस्थौ मुदान्वितः। देवैः सह द्विजैश्चैव नानास्वीकारकः प्रभुः॥ ६१
bahiḥ kailāsakudharācchambhustasthau mudānvitaḥ | devaiḥ saha dvijaiścaiva nānāsvīkārakaḥ prabhuḥ 61 ||
कैलास पर्वतके बाहर शम्भुजी प्रसन्नतापूर्वक देवताओं तथा ब्राह्मणोंके साथ खड़े हो गये; वे प्रभु नाना रूप धारण करनेवाले हैं।
Outside Mount Kailāsa, Śambhu, the Lord who assumes manifold forms, stood filled with joy, together with the gods and the twice-born.
Note'नानास्वीकारकः' ('assuming manifold forms/roles') is kept as printed; it is an unusual compound, here rendered descriptively as an epithet of Śiva as the one who takes on many guises.
बहिः कैलासकुधराच्छम्भुः (bahiḥ kailāsakudharācchambhuḥ) — Śambhu, outside the mountain Kailāsaतस्थौ मुदान्वितः (tasthau mudānvitaḥ) — stood, filled with joyदेवैः सह द्विजैश्चैव (devaiḥ saha dvijaiścaiva) — together with the gods and the twice-bornनानास्वीकारकः प्रभुः (nānāsvīkārakaḥ prabhuḥ) — the Lord who assumes manifold forms
६२ तदोत्सवो महानासीत्तत्र देवादिभिः कृतः। सन्तुष्ट्यर्थं महेशस्य गानवाद्यसुनृत्यकः॥ ६२
tadotsavo mahānāsīttatra devādibhiḥ kṛtaḥ | santuṣṭyarthaṃ maheśasya gānavādyasunṛtyakaḥ 62 ||
तब वहाँ देवता आदिके द्वारा महेशकी प्रसन्नताके लिये गान, वाद्य तथा सुन्दर नृत्यसे युक्त एक महान् उत्सव हुआ।
Then a great festival arose there, made by the gods and others for the satisfaction of Maheśa, consisting of song, music, and fine dance.
तदोत्सवो महानासीत् (tadotsavo mahānāsīt) — then a great festival aroseतत्र देवादिभिः कृतः (tatra devādibhiḥ kṛtaḥ) — performed there by the gods and othersसन्तुष्ट्यर्थं महेशस्य (santuṣṭyarthaṃ maheśasya) — for the sake of Maheśa's satisfactionगानवाद्यसुनृत्यकः (gānavādyasunṛtyakaḥ) — consisting of song, music, and fine dance
इति श्रीशिवमहापुराणे द्वितीयायां रुद्रसंहितायां तृतीये पार्वतीखण्डे देवनिमन्त्रणदेवागमनशिवयात्रावर्णनं नामैकोनचत्वारिंशोऽध्यायः॥ ३९॥
Thus ends the thirty-ninth chapter, called "The Description of the Invitation of the Gods, the Arrival of the Gods, and the Setting-Out of Śiva's Procession," in the Pārvatī-khaṇḍa of the second Rudra-saṃhitā, in the glorious Śiva Mahāpurāṇa.
इस प्रकार श्रीशिवमहापुराणके अन्तर्गत द्वितीय रुद्रसंहिताके तृतीय पार्वतीखण्डमें देवनिमन्त्रण, देवागमन, शिवयात्रावर्णन नामक उनतालीसवाँ अध्याय पूर्ण हुआ॥ ३९॥
