इदानीं श्रोतुमिच्छामि (idānīṃ śrotumicchāmi) — now I wish to hearnow I wish to hear·चरितं शशिमौलिनः (caritaṃ śaśimaulinaḥ) — the deeds of the moon-crested onethe deeds of the moon-crested one·वैवाहिकं सुमाङ्गल्यं (vaivāhikaṃ sumāṅgalyaṃ) — the wedding-tale, full of auspiciousnessthe wedding-tale, full of auspiciousness·सर्वाघौघविनाशनम् (sarvāghaughavināśanam) — that destroys the entire mass of sinsthat destroys the entire mass of sins

किं चकार महादेवः (kiṃ cakāra mahādevaḥ) — what did the great god dowhat did the great god do·प्राप्य मङ्गलपत्रिकाम् (prāpya maṅgalapatrikām) — upon receiving the auspicious wedding-letterupon receiving the auspicious wedding-letter·तां श्रावय कथां दिव्यां (tāṃ śrāvaya kathāṃ divyāṃ) — relate that divine storyrelate that divine story·शङ्करस्य परात्मनः (śaṅkarasya parātmanaḥ) — of Śaṅkara, the supreme soulof Śaṅkara, the supreme soul

शृणु वत्स महाप्राज्ञ (śṛṇu vatsa mahāprājña) — listen, O child, O greatly wise onelisten, O child, O greatly wise one·शाङ्करं परमं यशः (śāṅkaraṃ paramaṃ yaśaḥ) — to the supreme glory concerning Śaṅkarato the supreme glory concerning Śaṅkara·यच्चकार महादेवः (yaccakāra mahādevaḥ) — to what the great god didto what the great god did·प्राप्य मङ्गलपत्रिकाम् (prāpya maṅgalapatrikām) — upon receiving the auspicious wedding-letterupon receiving the auspicious wedding-letter

अथ शम्भुर्गृहीत्वा तां (atha śambhurgṛhītvā tāṃ) — then Śambhu, having taken thatthen Śambhu, having taken that·मुदा मङ्गलपत्रिकाम् (mudā maṅgalapatrikām) — auspicious wedding-letter, with joyauspicious wedding-letter, with joy·विजहास प्रहृष्टात्मा (vijahāsa prahṛṣṭātmā) — laughed aloud, his heart delightedlaughed aloud, his heart delighted·मानं तेषां व्यधाद्विभुः (mānaṃ teṣāṃ vyadhādvibhuḥ) — and the mighty lord showed them honourand the mighty lord showed them honour

वाचयित्वा च तां (vācayitvā ca tāṃ) — and having had it readand having had it read·सम्यग्स्वीचकार विधानतः (samyagsvīcakāra vidhānataḥ) — he duly accepted it according to prescribed rulehe duly accepted it according to prescribed rule·तज्जनान्यापयामास (tajjanānyāpayāmāsa) — he sent away those persons who brought ithe sent away those persons who brought it·बहुसम्मान्य चादृतः (bahusammānya cādṛtaḥ) — having greatly honoured them, with respecthaving greatly honoured them, with respect

उवाच मुनिवर्गास्तान् (uvāca munivargāstān) — he said to that group of sageshe said to that group of sages·कार्यं सम्यक् कृतं शुभम् (kāryaṃ samyak kṛtaṃ śubham) — the auspicious task has been well accomplishedthe auspicious task has been well accomplished·आगन्तव्यं विवाहे मे (āgantavyaṃ vivāhe me) — you must come to my weddingyou must come to my wedding·विवाहः स्वीकृतो मया (vivāhaḥ svīkṛto mayā) — for I have accepted the marriagefor I have accepted the marriage

इत्याकर्ण्य वचः शम्भोः (ityākarṇya vacaḥ śambhoḥ) — hearing these words of Śambhuhearing these words of Śambhu·प्रहृष्टास्ते प्रणम्य तम् (prahṛṣṭāste praṇamya tam) — they, delighted, bowed to himthey, delighted, bowed to him·परिक्रम्य ययुर्धाम (parikramya yayurdhāma) — and circling him, went to their abodesand circling him, went to their abodes·शंसन्तः स्वं विधिं परम् (śaṃsantaḥ svaṃ vidhiṃ param) — praising their own supreme good fortunepraising their own supreme good fortune

अथ देवेश्वरः शम्भुः (atha deveśvaraḥ śambhuḥ) — then Śambhu, the lord of godsthen Śambhu, the lord of gods·सामरस्त्वां मुने द्रुतम् (sāmarastvāṃ mune drutam) — together with the immortals, quickly [called to mind] you, O sagetogether with the immortals, quickly [called to mind] you, O sage·लौकिकाचारमाश्रित्य (laukikācāramāśritya) — resorting to worldly customresorting to worldly custom·महालीलाकरः प्रभुः (mahālīlākaraḥ prabhuḥ) — the Lord, ever performing great playthe Lord, ever performing great play

त्वमागतः परप्रीत्या (tvamāgataḥ paraprītyā) — you came, with the greatest joyyou came, with the greatest joy·प्रशंसंस्त्वं विधिं परम् (praśaṃsaṃstvaṃ vidhiṃ param) — praising your own great fortunepraising your own great fortune·प्रणमंश्च नतस्कन्धो (praṇamaṃśca nataskandho) — and bowing, your shoulders loweredand bowing, your shoulders lowered·विनीतात्मा कृताञ्जलिः (vinītātmā kṛtāñjaliḥ) — humble of heart, hands folded in reverencehumble of heart, hands folded in reverence

अस्तौत्सुजयशब्दानि (astautsujayaśabdāni) — you praised him with cries of victoryyou praised him with cries of victory·समुच्चार्य मुहुर्मुहुः (samuccārya muhurmuhuḥ) — uttering them again and againuttering them again and again·निदेशं प्रार्थयंस्तस्य (nideśaṃ prārthayaṃstasya) — seeking his commandseeking his command·प्रशंसंस्त्वं विधिं मुने (praśaṃsaṃstvaṃ vidhiṃ mune) — praising your own destiny, O sagepraising your own destiny, O sage

ततः शम्भुः प्रहृष्टात्मा (tataḥ śambhuḥ prahṛṣṭātmā) — then Śambhu, his heart delightedthen Śambhu, his heart delighted·दर्शयँल्लौकिकीं गतिम् (darśayaṁllaukikīṃ gatim) — displaying worldly conductdisplaying worldly conduct·उवाच मुनिवर्य त्वां (uvāca munivarya tvāṃ) — spoke to you, O best of sagesspoke to you, O best of sages·प्रीणयन् शुभया गिरा (prīṇayan śubhayā girā) — gladdening you with auspicious speechgladdening you with auspicious speech

प्रीत्या शृणु मुनिश्रेष्ठ (prītyā śṛṇu muniśreṣṭha) — listen with love, O best of sageslisten with love, O best of sages·ह्यस्मत्तोऽद्य वदामि ते (hyasmatto'dya vadāmi te) — to what I now say to youto what I now say to you·ब्रुवे तत्त्वां प्रियो मे (bruve tattvāṃ priyo me) — I tell you this because you are dear to meI tell you this because you are dear to me·यद्भक्तराजशिरोमणिः (yadbhaktarājaśiromaṇiḥ) — because you are the crest-jewel among royal devoteesbecause you are the crest-jewel among royal devotees

कृतं महत्तपो देव्या (kṛtaṃ mahattapo devyā) — great austerity was performed by the goddessgreat austerity was performed by the goddess·पार्वत्या तव शासनात् (pārvatyā tava śāsanāt) — Pārvatī, by your instructionPārvatī, by your instruction·तस्यै वरो मया दत्तः (tasyai varo mayā dattaḥ) — a boon was given by me to hera boon was given by me to her·पतित्वे तोषितेन वै (patitve toṣitena vai) — being pleased, of becoming her husbandbeing pleased, of becoming her husband

करिष्येऽहं विवाहं च (kariṣye'haṃ vivāhaṃ ca) — I shall now perform the marriageI shall now perform the marriage·तस्या वश्यो हि भक्तितः (tasyā vaśyo hi bhaktitaḥ) — being subdued indeed by her devotionbeing subdued indeed by her devotion·सप्तर्षिभिः साधितं च (saptarṣibhiḥ sādhitaṃ ca) — the arrangement has been made by the seven sagesthe arrangement has been made by the seven sages·तल्लग्नं शोधितं च तैः (tallagnaṃ śodhitaṃ ca taiḥ) — and the auspicious hour determined by themand the auspicious hour determined by them

अद्यतः सप्तमे चाह्नि (adyataḥ saptame cāhni) — on the seventh day from todayon the seventh day from today·तद्भविष्यति नारद (tadbhaviṣyati nārada) — that will take place, O Nāradathat will take place, O Nārada·महोत्सवं करिष्यामि (mahotsavaṃ kariṣyāmi) — I shall hold a great festivalI shall hold a great festival·लौकिकीं गतिमाश्रितः (laukikīṃ gatimāśritaḥ) — resorting to worldly customresorting to worldly custom

इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य (iti śrutvā vacastasya) — hearing these words of hishearing these words of his·शंकरस्य परात्मनः (śaṃkarasya parātmanaḥ) — of Śaṅkara, the supreme soulof Śaṅkara, the supreme soul·प्रसन्नधीः प्रभुं नत्वा (prasannadhīḥ prabhuṃ natvā) — with delighted mind, bowing to the Lordwith delighted mind, bowing to the Lord·तात त्वं वाक्यमब्रवीः (tāta tvaṃ vākyamabravīḥ) — O son, you spoke these wordsO son, you spoke these words

भवतस्तु व्रतमिदं (bhavatastu vratamidaṃ) — this indeed is your vowthis indeed is your vow·भक्तवश्यो भवान्मतः (bhaktavaśyo bhavānmataḥ) — that you are held to be subject to your devoteesthat you are held to be subject to your devotees·सम्यक् कृतं च भवता (samyak kṛtaṃ ca bhavatā) — and well have you doneand well have you done·पार्वतीमानसेप्सितम् (pārvatīmānasepsitam) — what was desired in Pārvatī's heartwhat was desired in Pārvatī's heart

कार्यं मत्सदृशं किञ्चित् (kāryaṃ matsadṛśaṃ kiñcit) — whatever task is suited to one like mewhatever task is suited to one like me·कथनीयं त्वया विभो (kathanīyaṃ tvayā vibho) — should be told by you, O mighty lordshould be told by you, O mighty lord·मत्वा स्वसेवकं मां हि (matvā svasevakaṃ māṃ hi) — considering me indeed your own servantconsidering me indeed your own servant·कृपां कुरु नमोऽस्तु ते (kṛpāṃ kuru namo'stu te) — show grace; salutation to youshow grace; salutation to you

इत्युक्तस्तु त्वया शम्भुः (ityuktastu tvayā śambhuḥ) — thus addressed by you, Śambhuthus addressed by you, Śambhu·शंकरो भक्तवत्सलः (śaṃkaro bhaktavatsalaḥ) — Śaṅkara, ever affectionate to his devoteesŚaṅkara, ever affectionate to his devotees·प्रत्युवाच प्रसन्नात्मा (pratyuvāca prasannātmā) — replied, his heart pleasedreplied, his heart pleased·सादरं त्वां मुनीश्वर (sādaraṃ tvāṃ munīśvara) — to you respectfully, O lord of sagesto you respectfully, O lord of sages

विष्णुप्रभृतिदेवांश्च (viṣṇuprabhṛtidevāṃśca) — and the gods beginning with Viṣṇuand the gods beginning with Viṣṇu·मुनीन्सिद्धानपि ध्रुवम् (munīnsiddhānapi dhruvam) — the sages, and the Siddhas too, surelythe sages, and the Siddhas too, surely·त्वं निमन्त्रय मद्वाण्या (tvaṃ nimantraya madvāṇyā) — do you invite, with my own worddo you invite, with my own word·मुनेऽन्यानपि सर्वतः (mune'nyānapi sarvataḥ) — and others too, O sage, from every quarterand others too, O sage, from every quarter

सर्व आयान्तु सोत्साहाः (sarva āyāntu sotsāhāḥ) — let all come with enthusiasmlet all come with enthusiasm·सर्वशोभासमन्विताः (sarvaśobhāsamanvitāḥ) — adorned with every splendouradorned with every splendour·सस्त्रीसुतगणाः प्रीत्या (sastrīsutagaṇāḥ prītyā) — together with their wives, sons and hosts, joyfullytogether with their wives, sons and hosts, joyfully·मम शासनगौरवात् (mama śāsanagauravāt) — out of respect for my commandout of respect for my command

नागमिष्यन्ति ये त्वत्र (nāgamiṣyanti ye tvatra) — those who will not come herethose who will not come here·मद्विवाहोत्सवे मुने (madvivāhotsave mune) — to my wedding festival, O sageto my wedding festival, O sage·ते स्वकीया न मन्तव्या (te svakīyā na mantavyā) — they are not to be considered my ownthey are not to be considered my own·मया देवादयः खलु (mayā devādayaḥ khalu) — by me, the gods and others indeedby me, the gods and others indeed

इतीशाज्ञां ततो धृत्वा (itīśājñāṃ tato dhṛtvā) — then, taking up this command of the Lordthen, taking up this command of the Lord·भवान् शङ्करवल्लभः (bhavān śaṅkaravallabhaḥ) — you, dear to Śaṅkarayou, dear to Śaṅkara·सर्वान्निमन्त्रयामास (sarvānnimantrayāmāsa) — invited everyoneinvited everyone·तं तं गत्वा द्रुतं मुने (taṃ taṃ gatvā drutaṃ mune) — going quickly to each one, O sagegoing quickly to each one, O sage

शिवोऽपि तस्थौ सोत्कण्ठः (śivo'pi tasthau sotkaṇṭhaḥ) — Śiva too waited, filled with longingŚiva too waited, filled with longing·तदागमनलालसः (tadāgamanalālasaḥ) — eager for their arrivaleager for their arrival·स्वगणैः सोत्सवैः सर्वैः (svagaṇaiḥ sotsavaiḥ sarvaiḥ) — with all his own hosts, celebratingwith all his own hosts, celebrating·नृत्यद्भिः सर्वतो दिशम् (nṛtyadbhiḥ sarvato diśam) — dancing in every directiondancing in every direction

एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु (etasminneva kāle tu) — at this very timeat this very time·रचयित्वा स्ववेषकम् (racayitvā svaveṣakam) — having arrayed his own attirehaving arrayed his own attire·आजगामाच्युतः शीघ्रं (ājagāmācyutaḥ śīghraṃ) — Acyuta quickly cameAcyuta quickly came·कैलासं सपरिच्छदः (kailāsaṃ saparicchadaḥ) — to Kailāsa, with his retinueto Kailāsa, with his retinue

शिवं प्रणम्य सद्भक्त्या (śivaṃ praṇamya sadbhaktyā) — bowing to Śiva with true devotionbowing to Śiva with true devotion·सदारः सदलो मुदा (sadāraḥ sadalo mudā) — together with his wife and host, joyfullytogether with his wife and host, joyfully·तदाज्ञां प्राप्य सन्तस्थौ (tadājñāṃ prāpya santasthau) — having received his leave, he remainedhaving received his leave, he remained·सुस्थाने प्रीतमानसः (susthāne prītamānasaḥ) — in a fitting place, his mind delightedin a fitting place, his mind delighted

तथाहं स्वगणैराशु (tathāhaṃ svagaṇairāśu) — then I too, quickly with my own hoststhen I too, quickly with my own hosts·कैलासमगमं मुदा (kailāsamagamaṃ mudā) — went joyfully to Kailāsawent joyfully to Kailāsa·प्रभुं प्रणम्यातिष्ठं वै (prabhuṃ praṇamyātiṣṭhaṃ vai) — and having bowed to the Lord, I remainedand having bowed to the Lord, I remained·सानन्दः स्वगणान्वितः (sānandaḥ svagaṇānvitaḥ) — delighted, together with my own hostsdelighted, together with my own hosts

इन्द्रादयो लोकपाला (indrādayo lokapālā) — the guardians of the quarters, beginning with Indrathe guardians of the quarters, beginning with Indra·आययुः सपरिच्छदाः (āyayuḥ saparicchadāḥ) — came with their retinuescame with their retinues·तथैवालंकृतास्सर्वे (tathaivālaṃkṛtāssarve) — all likewise adornedall likewise adorned·सोत्सवास्सकलत्रकाः (sotsavāssakalatrakāḥ) — joyful, together with their wivesjoyful, together with their wives

तथैवं मुनयो नागाः (tathaivaṃ munayo nāgāḥ) — likewise the sages, the nāgaslikewise the sages, the nāgas·सिद्धा उपसुरास्तथा (siddhā upasurāstathā) — the Siddhas, and the demigods toothe Siddhas, and the demigods too·आययुश्चापरेऽपीह (āyayuścāpare'pīha) — and others too came hereand others too came here·सोत्सवाः सुनिमन्त्रिताः (sotsavāḥ sunimantritāḥ) — rejoicing, duly invitedrejoicing, duly invited

महेश्वरस्तदा तत्रागतानां (maheśvarastadā tatrāgatānāṃ) — then Maheśvara, of those who had arrived therethen Maheśvara, of those who had arrived there·च पृथक् पृथक् (ca pṛthak pṛthak) — each one separatelyeach one separately·सर्वेषाममराद्यानां (sarveṣāmamarādyānāṃ) — of all of them, beginning with the immortalsof all of them, beginning with the immortals·सत्कारं व्यदधान्मुदा (satkāraṃ vyadadhānmudā) — joyfully performed the due honoursjoyfully performed the due honours

अथोत्सवो महानासीत् (athotsavo mahānāsīt) — then a great festival arosethen a great festival arose·कैलासे परमोऽद्भुतः (kailāse paramo'dbhutaḥ) — on Kailāsa, supremely wondrouson Kailāsa, supremely wondrous·नृत्यादिकं तदा चक्रुः (nṛtyādikaṃ tadā cakruḥ) — dancing and other performances were then madedancing and other performances were then made·यथायोग्यं सुरस्त्रियः (yathāyogyaṃ surastriyaḥ) — fittingly, by the celestial womenfittingly, by the celestial women

कर्णाभरणरूपौ च (karṇābharaṇarūpau ca) — and in the form of ear-ornamentsand in the form of ear-ornaments·यौ हि सर्पौ प्रकीर्तितौ (yau hi sarpau prakīrtitau) — those two serpents, so it is saidthose two serpents, so it is said·कुण्डलेऽभवतां तस्य (kuṇḍale'bhavatāṃ tasya) — became his two earringsbecame his two earrings·नानारत्नान्विते मुने (nānāratnānvite mune) — O sage, as if set with manifold gemsO sage, as if set with manifold gems

अन्याङ्गसंस्थिताः सर्पाः (anyāṅgasaṃsthitāḥ sarpāḥ) — the other serpents residing on his limbsthe other serpents residing on his limbs·तदङ्गाभरणानि च (tadaṅgābharaṇāni ca) — became his other bodily ornamentsbecame his other bodily ornaments·बभूवुरतिरम्याणि (babhūvuratiramyāṇi) — they became exceedingly beautifulthey became exceedingly beautiful·नानारत्नमयानि च (nānāratnamayāni ca) — and, as it were, made of manifold gemsand, as it were, made of manifold gems

विभूतिरंगरागोऽभूत् (vibhūtiraṃgarāgo'bhūt) — the ash became the unguent for his limbsthe ash became the unguent for his limbs·चन्दनादिसमुद्भवः (candanādisamudbhavaḥ) — as though arisen from sandal and the likeas though arisen from sandal and the like·तद्दुकूलमभूद्दिव्यं (taddukūlamabhūddivyaṃ) — that became a divine silken garmentthat became a divine silken garment·गजचर्मादि सुन्दरम् (gajacarmādi sundaram) — the beautiful elephant-hide and the likethe beautiful elephant-hide and the like

ईदृशं सुन्दरं रूपं (īdṛśaṃ sundaraṃ rūpaṃ) — such a beautiful formsuch a beautiful form·जातं वर्णातिदुष्करम् (jātaṃ varṇātiduṣkaram) — came about, exceedingly difficult to describecame about, exceedingly difficult to describe·ईश्वरोऽपि स्वयं साक्षात् (īśvaro'pi svayaṃ sākṣāt) — the Lord himself, in personthe Lord himself, in person·ऐश्वर्यं लब्धवान्स्वतः (aiśvaryaṃ labdhavānsvataḥ) — had obtained this splendour of his own accordhad obtained this splendour of his own accord

ततश्च सर्वे सुरपक्षदानवा (tataśca sarve surapakṣadānavā) — and then all the gods and the demon hostand then all the gods and the demon host·नागाः पतङ्गाप्सरसो महर्षयः (nāgāḥ pataṅgāpsaraso maharṣayaḥ) — the nāgas, the winged ones, the apsarases and the great sagesthe nāgas, the winged ones, the apsarases and the great sages·समेत्य सर्वे शिवसन्निधिं तदा (sametya sarve śivasannidhiṃ tadā) — all having then assembled in Śiva's presenceall having then assembled in Śiva's presence·महोत्सवाः प्रोचुरहो मुदान्विताः (mahotsavāḥ procuraho mudānvitāḥ) — rejoicing greatly, exclaimed, filled with delightrejoicing greatly, exclaimed, filled with delight

गच्छ गच्छ महादेव (gaccha gaccha mahādeva) — go, go, O great godgo, go, O great god·विवाहार्थं महेश्वर (vivāhārthaṃ maheśvara) — for the sake of the wedding, O Maheśvarafor the sake of the wedding, O Maheśvara·गिरिजाया महादेव्याः (girijāyā mahādevyāḥ) — with the great goddess Girijāwith the great goddess Girijā·सहास्माभिः कृपां कुरु (sahāsmābhiḥ kṛpāṃ kuru) — show us the favour of your companyshow us the favour of your company
