Chapter 38 · The Fashioning of the Pavilion · Verses 1–40

Continuing his narration to Nārada, Brahmā describes how Himavān, delighted, adorned his own city for the wedding festival, having its roads sprinkled and swept and every gateway hung with plantain-trunk pillars and mango-leaf festoons, and how, placing the illustrious Garga foremost, he arranged everything fitting and auspicious for his daughter's sake. He then summoned Viśvakarmā, who built an immense pavilion ten thousand yojanas wide, so filled with lifelike artificial lions, cranes, peacocks, dancing women, bowmen, elephants, horses, chariots and foot-soldiers, and with an image of Mahālakṣmī at the gate, that no one could tell still from moving or water from dry land. At the great gateway Viśvakarmā set a crystalline image of Nandī bearing a jewelled Puṣpaka chariot, flanked by four-tusked elephants and sun-bright horses, and fashioned artificial likenesses — true to their forms — of the lokapālas, the sages beginning with Bhṛgu, Viṣṇu with his Garuḍa-kind attendants, Brahmā himself reciting hymns amid his sons the Vedas, and Indra on Airāvata, all to bewilder the gods and sages who would come. Urged on further by Himādri, Viśvakarmā also fashioned, in mere moments, great platforms and the various worlds for the gods' lodging — Satyaloka for Brahmā, Vaikuṇṭha for Viṣṇu, a palace for Indra, dwellings for the lokapālas and for all the other immortals — and finally, having received a boon from Śiva himself, he built for him a resplendent house set in Śivaloka, adorned with the mountain-lord's own emblems. His worldly preparations complete, Himācala waited joyfully for Śambhu's arrival, and Brahmā closes his account of Himālaya, asking Nārada what more he wishes to hear.

And Viṣṇu, together with all his attendants of the Garuḍa order, was likewise fashioned as an artificial image of the most wondrous form.

Note'गरुडाख्यैः' ("named/of the class of Garuḍa") is a plural qualifier of the pārṣadas — an unusual but legible way of describing Viṣṇu's Garuḍa-kind attendants, rendered here as "of the Garuḍa order" rather than the more expected 'गरुडाद्यैः' ("beginning with Garuḍa").

kiṃ bahūktena devarṣe sarvo vai viśvakarmaṇā | himādripreritenāśu klṛptaḥ surasamājakaḥ 27 ||

Doubtful readingThe compound rendered 'हिमाद्रिप्रेरितेन' is blurred in the source print — the middle akṣara reads as something between 'ग्र' and 'द्रि', and could not be resolved with certainty even after zooming in. The reading 'हिमाद्रिप्रेरितेन' ("urged by the snow-mountain [Himālaya]") is adopted because it alone matches the accompanying Hindi gloss ('हिमालयसे प्रेरित होकर'), but the akṣara itself remains visually uncertain.
