Chapter 40·The Account of Śiva's Procession·Verses 1–57
Continuing his narration to Nārada, Brahmā tells how Śambhu summoned Nandin and all his gaṇas, had a portion of them stay behind to keep festivity at Kailāsa, and set out with the rest for the mountain-lord's city. Brahmā then catalogues, troop-lord by troop-lord, the vast host that departed with Śiva — Śaṅkhakarṇa, Kekarākṣa, Vikṛta, Viśākha, Pārijāta, Sarvāntaka, Vikṛtānana, Dundubha, Kapāla, Sandāraka, Kanduka, Kuṇḍaka, Viṣṭambha, Pippala, Sanādaka, Āveśana, Mahākeśa, Kuṇḍa, Parvataka, Candratāpana, Kāla, Kālaka, Mahākāla, Agnika, Agnimukha, Ādityamūrdhā, Ghanāvaha, Sannāha, Kumuda, Amogha, Kokila, Sumantra, Kākapādodara, Santānaka, Mahābala, Madhupiṅga, Nīla, Pūrṇabhadra, Caturvaktra, Karaṇa, Gaṇeśāna, Ṣaḍāsya, Cañcumukha, Saṃvartaka, Caitra, Lakulīśa, and Vīrabhadra among them — each leading his own countless myriads of gaṇas, along with Nandin's own incalculable following and Kṣetrapāla and Bhairava besides, all thousand-armed, jaṭā-crowned, crescent-adorned, rudrākṣa-wearing and ash-smeared, radiant as a crore of suns, ranging over earth, netherworld, sky and the seven heavens. He describes how Caṇḍī, Rudra's own sister, mounted on a corpse-throne, garlanded with serpents and bearing a golden jar, came forth leading her own eleven-crore-strong host of fearsome Rudra-gaṇas amid a din of ḍamarus, bherīs, conches and dundubhis that filled the three worlds; how the gods, siddhas and lokapālas followed behind the gaṇas, with Viṣṇu enthroned on Garuḍa beneath a great parasol, Brahmā himself in the procession together with the embodied Vedas, śāstras, purāṇas and āgamas, and Indra on Airāvata; how sages, śākinīs, yātudhānas, vetālas, bhūtas, pretas, piśācas, and the gandharvas Tumburu, Nārada, Hāhā and Hūhū sounded their instruments; and how the mothers of the worlds, the divine maidens, Gāyatrī, Sāvitrī, Lakṣmī and the other goddesses of the gods went along rejoicing, while Śiva himself, mounted on the crystalline bull who is Dharma incarnate, shone amid the assembled gods and great sages as he journeyed to Himālaya's house to claim Pārvatī's hand. Having thus told the joyous tale of Śambhu's departure, Brahmā tells Nārada he will now relate the true happening that followed in Himālaya's city.
