Born amid great splendour that dims the very lamps of her birth-chamber, the infant goddess brings joy to Himācala's household and city alike. Himavān names her Kālī, and, after Menā forbids her from taking up austerity in infancy with the word "u mā" (don't), she comes to be called Umā, and, by her kin's tradition, Pārvatī. She grows through childhood play, dearer to her father than his many sons, and in time studies the sciences with a guru, the learning of her former birth returning to her effortlessly.

O sage, by her splendour, well spreading all around the birthing-bed, the lamps of the night lost their radiance close by.
