दृष्ट्वा मुने गिरीशस्त्वां (dṛṣṭvā mune girīśastvāṃ) — O sage, seeing you, the mountain-lordO sage, seeing you, the mountain-lord·नत्वानर्च स नारद् (natvānarca sa nārad) — bowed and honoured you, O Nāradabowed and honoured you, O Nārada·आहूय च स्वतनयां (āhūya ca svatanayāṃ) — and, calling his own daughterand, calling his own daughter·त्वदङ्घ्र्योस्तामपातयत् (tvadaṅghryostāmapātayat) — made her fall at your feetmade her fall at your feet

पुनर्नत्वा मुनीश त्वाम् (punarnatvā munīśa tvām) — bowing again to you, O lord of sagesbowing again to you, O lord of sages·उवाच हिमभूधरः (uvāca himabhūdharaḥ) — the snow-mountain spokethe snow-mountain spoke·साञ्जलिः स्वविधिं मत्वा (sāñjaliḥ svavidhiṃ matvā) — with joined palms, deeming it his own fitting dutywith joined palms, deeming it his own fitting duty·बहुसन्नतमस्तकः (bahusannatamastakaḥ) — his head bowed very lowhis head bowed very low

तच्छ्रुत्वा त्वं मुने प्राथ (tacchrutvā tvaṃ mune prātha) — hearing that, O sage, you then spokehearing that, O sage, you then spoke·महाकौतुककारकः (mahākautukakārakaḥ) — the great deviser of wondersthe great deviser of wonders·हिमाचलं शुभैर्वाक्यैः (himācalaṃ śubhairvākyaiḥ) — Himācala, with auspicious wordsHimācala, with auspicious words·हर्षयन्वाग्विशारदः (harṣayanvāgviśāradaḥ) — gladdening him, skilled in speechgladdening him, skilled in speech

स्नेहाच्छृणु गिरे वाक्यं (snehācchṛṇu gire vākyaṃ) — with affection, O mountain, hear my wordwith affection, O mountain, hear my word·मम सत्यं मृषा न हि (mama satyaṃ mṛṣā na hi) — it is true, never falseit is true, never false·करेरेखा ब्रह्मलिपिः (karerekhā brahmalipiḥ) — the line on the hand, Brahmā's writingthe line on the hand, Brahmā's writing·न मृषा भवति ध्रुवम् (na mṛṣā bhavati dhruvam) — is certainly never falseis certainly never false

तादृशोऽस्याः पतिः शैल (tādṛśo'syāḥ patiḥ śaila) — such, O mountain, will be her husbandsuch, O mountain, will be her husband·भविष्यति न संशयः (bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ) — without doubtwithout doubt·तत्रोपायं शृणु प्रीत्या (tatropāyaṃ śṛṇu prītyā) — now hear with love the remedy for thisnow hear with love the remedy for this·यं कृत्वा लप्स्यसे सुखम् (yaṃ kṛtvā lapsyase sukham) — doing which you shall attain happinessdoing which you shall attain happiness

तादृशोऽस्ति वरः शम्भुः (tādṛśo'sti varaḥ śambhuḥ) — that very bridegroom is Śambhuthat very bridegroom is Śambhu·लीलारूपधरः प्रभुः (līlārūpadharaḥ prabhuḥ) — the lord who bears such a form in playthe lord who bears such a form in play·कुलक्षणानि सर्वाणि (kulakṣaṇāni sarvāṇi) — all those family-signsall those family-signs·तत्र तुल्यानि सद्गुणैः (tatra tulyāni sadguṇaiḥ) — there are equal to virtuesthere are equal to virtues

प्रभौ दोषो न दुःखाय (prabhau doṣo na duḥkhāya) — in one who is powerful, a flaw does not bring sorrowin one who is powerful, a flaw does not bring sorrow·दुःखदोऽत्यप्रभौ हि सः (duḥkhado'tyaprabhau hi saḥ) — it is sorrow-bringing only in one utterly without powerit is sorrow-bringing only in one utterly without power·रविपावकगङ्गानां (ravipāvakagaṅgānāṃ) — of the sun, fire, and the Gaṅgāof the sun, fire, and the Gaṅgā·तत्र ज्ञेया निदर्शना (tatra jñeyā nidarśanā) — the example should be understood in this matterthe example should be understood in this matter

तस्माच्छिवाय कन्यां स्वां (tasmācchivāya kanyāṃ svāṃ) — therefore, to Śiva, your own daughtertherefore, to Śiva, your own daughter·शिवां देहि विवेकतः (śivāṃ dehi vivekataḥ) — give Śivā, with discernmentgive Śivā, with discernment·शिवः सर्वेश्वरः सेव्यः (śivaḥ sarveśvaraḥ sevyaḥ) — Śiva is the lord of all, worthy of serviceŚiva is the lord of all, worthy of service·अविकारी प्रभुरव्ययः (avikārī prabhuravyayaḥ) — unchanging, an imperishable masterunchanging, an imperishable master

शीघ्रप्रसादः स शिवः (śīghraprasādaḥ sa śivaḥ) — that Śiva, swift to be pleasedthat Śiva, swift to be pleased·तां ग्रहीष्यत्यसंशयम् (tāṃ grahīṣyatyasaṃśayam) — will accept her without doubtwill accept her without doubt·तपःसाध्यो विशेषेण (tapaḥsādhyo viśeṣeṇa) — especially won by austerityespecially won by austerity·यदि कुर्याच्छिवा तपः (yadi kuryācchivā tapaḥ) — if Śivā performs austerityif Śivā performs austerity

सर्वथा सुसमर्थो हि (sarvathā susamartho hi) — in every way fully capablein every way fully capable·स शिवः सकलेश्वरः (sa śivaḥ sakaleśvaraḥ) — that Śiva, lord of allthat Śiva, lord of all·कुलिशस्यापि विध्वंसी (kuliśasyāpi vidhvaṃsī) — the destroyer even of the thunderboltthe destroyer even of the thunderbolt·ब्रह्माधीनः सुखप्रदः (brahmādhīnaḥ sukhapradaḥ) — dependent on Brahmā, the bestower of happinessdependent on Brahmā, the bestower of happiness

इत्युक्त्वा त्वं पुनस्तात (ityuktvā tvaṃ punastāta) — having said this, O dear one, againhaving said this, O dear one, again·कौतुकी ब्रह्मविन्मुने (kautukī brahmavinmune) — curious, O sage knower of Brahmancurious, O sage knower of Brahman·शैलराजमवोचो हि (śailarājamavoco hi) — you spoke to the king of mountainsyou spoke to the king of mountains·हर्षयन्वचनैः शुभैः (harṣayanvacanaiḥ śubhaiḥ) — gladdening him with auspicious wordsgladdening him with auspicious words

भाविनी दयिता शम्भोः (bhāvinī dayitā śambhoḥ) — she will become Śambhu's belovedshe will become Śambhu's beloved·सानुकूला सदा हरे (sānukūlā sadā hare) — ever favourable to Haraever favourable to Hara·महासाध्वी सुव्रता च (mahāsādhvī suvratā ca) — a great chaste woman, of good vowsa great chaste woman, of good vows·पित्रोः सुखविवर्धिनी (pitroḥ sukhavivardhinī) — the increaser of her parents' happinessthe increaser of her parents' happiness

शम्भोश्चित्तं वशे चैषा (śambhościttaṃ vaśe caiṣā) — and this woman, Śambhu's mind under controland this woman, Śambhu's mind under control·करिष्यति तपस्विनी (kariṣyati tapasvinī) — will bring, the woman of austeritywill bring, the woman of austerity·स चाप्येनामृते योषां (sa cāpyenāmṛte yoṣāṃ) — and he too, apart from this womanand he too, apart from this woman·न ह्यन्यामुद्वहिष्यति (na hyanyāmudvahiṣyati) — will indeed marry no otherwill indeed marry no other

एतयोः सदृशं प्रेम (etayoḥ sadṛśaṃ prema) — a love like that of these twoa love like that of these two·न कस्याप्येव तादृशम् (na kasyāpyeva tādṛśam) — belongs to no one else in such measurebelongs to no one else in such measure·भूतं वा भविता वापि (bhūtaṃ vā bhavitā vāpi) — it has neither existed before, nor will it come to beit has neither existed before, nor will it come to be·नाधुना च प्रवर्तते (nādhunā ca pravartate) — nor does it occur nownor does it occur now

अनयोः सुरकार्याणि (anayoḥ surakāryāṇi) — by these two, the tasks of the godsby these two, the tasks of the gods·कर्तव्यानि मृतानि च (kartavyāni mṛtāni ca) — that are to be done, and those that have lapsedthat are to be done, and those that have lapsed·यानि यानि नगश्रेष्ठ (yāni yāni nagaśreṣṭha) — whatever, O best of mountainswhatever, O best of mountains·जीवितानि पुनः पुनः (jīvitāni punaḥ punaḥ) — are to be revived again and againare to be revived again and again

अनया कन्यया तेऽद्रे (anayā kanyayā te'dre) — through this daughter of yours, O mountainthrough this daughter of yours, O mountain·अर्धनारीश्वरो हरः (ardhanārīśvaro haraḥ) — Hara will become ArdhanārīśvaraHara will become Ardhanārīśvara·भविष्यति तथा हर्ष (bhaviṣyati tathā harṣa) — and thus, joyfullyand thus, joyfully·दिनयोर्मिलितं पुनः (dinayormilitaṃ punaḥ) — these two's union, once morethese two's union, once more

शरीरार्धं हरस्यैषा (śarīrārdhaṃ harasyaiṣā) — half the body of Hara, this onehalf the body of Hara, this one·हरिष्यति सुता तव (hariṣyati sutā tava) — your daughter will takeyour daughter will take·तपःप्रभावात्संतोष्य (tapaḥprabhāvātsaṃtoṣya) — having satisfied, by the power of austerityhaving satisfied, by the power of austerity·महेशं सकलेश्वरम् (maheśaṃ sakaleśvaram) — Maheśa, the lord of allMaheśa, the lord of all

स्वर्णगौरी सुवर्णाभा (svarṇagaurī suvarṇābhā) — golden-fair, of golden lustregolden-fair, of golden lustre·तपसा तोष्य तं हरम् (tapasā toṣya taṃ haram) — having satisfied Hara by austerityhaving satisfied Hara by austerity·विद्युद्गौरतमा चेयं (vidyudgauratamā ceyaṃ) — and this one, most fair as lightningand this one, most fair as lightning·तव पुत्री भविष्यति (tava putrī bhaviṣyati) — your daughter will becomeyour daughter will become

गौरीति नाम्ना कन्या तु (gaurīti nāmnā kanyā tu) — by the name Gaurī, this girlby the name Gaurī, this girl·ख्यातिमेषा गमिष्यति (khyātimeṣā gamiṣyati) — will attain famewill attain fame·सर्वदेवगणैः पूज्या (sarvadevagaṇaiḥ pūjyā) — worshipped by all the hosts of godsworshipped by all the hosts of gods·हरिब्रह्मादिभिस्तथा (haribrahmādibhistathā) — and likewise by Hari, Brahmā, and the restand likewise by Hari, Brahmā, and the rest

नान्यस्मै त्वमिमां (nānyasmai tvamimāṃ) — not to anyone else, you, hernot to anyone else, you, her·दातुमिहार्हसि नगोत्तम (dātumihārhasi nagottama) — should give in this matter, O best of mountainsshould give in this matter, O best of mountains·इदं चोपांशु देवानां (idaṃ copāṃśu devānāṃ) — and this, kept secret, from the godsand this, kept secret, from the gods·न प्रकाश्यं कदाचन (na prakāśyaṃ kadācana) — never to be disclosednever to be disclosed

इति तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा (iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā) — hearing this speech of yourshearing this speech of yours·देवर्षे तव नारद (devarṣe tava nārada) — O divine sage NāradaO divine sage Nārada·उवाच हिमवान्वाक्यं (uvāca himavānvākyaṃ) — Himavān spoke this wordHimavān spoke this word·मुने त्वां वाग्विशारदः (mune tvāṃ vāgviśāradaḥ) — to you, O sage, being skilled in speechto you, O sage, being skilled in speech

हे मुने नारद प्राज्ञ (he mune nārada prājña) — O sage Nārada, O wise oneO sage Nārada, O wise one·विज्ञप्तिं कांचिदेव हि (vijñaptiṃ kāṃcideva hi) — a certain request, indeeda certain request, indeed·करोमि तां शृणु प्रीत्या (karomi tāṃ śṛṇu prītyā) — I make; hear it with loveI make; hear it with love·अतस्त्वं प्रमुदमावह (atastvaṃ pramudamāvaha) — and thereupon bring yourself joyand thereupon bring yourself joy

श्रूयते त्यक्तसङ्गः (śrūyate tyaktasaṅgaḥ) — it is heard, having renounced attachmentit is heard, having renounced attachment·स महादेवो यतात्मवान् (sa mahādevo yatātmavān) — that Mahādeva, self-controlledthat Mahādeva, self-controlled·तपश्चरति सन्नित्यं (tapaścarati sannityaṃ) — practises austerity, ever, being sopractises austerity, ever, being so·देवानामप्यगोचरः (devānāmapyagocaraḥ) — beyond the sight even of the godsbeyond the sight even of the gods

स कथं ध्यानमार्गस्थः (sa kathaṃ dhyānamārgasthaḥ) — how will he, established in the path of meditationhow will he, established in the path of meditation·परब्रह्मार्पितं मनः (parabrahmārpitaṃ manaḥ) — his mind offered to the supreme Brahmanhis mind offered to the supreme Brahman·भ्रंशयिष्यति देवर्षे (bhraṃśayiṣyati devarṣe) — let it slip, O divine sagelet it slip, O divine sage·तत्र मे संशयो महान् (tatra me saṃśayo mahān) — on this I have a great doubton this I have a great doubt

अक्षरं परमं ब्रह्म (akṣaraṃ paramaṃ brahma) — the imperishable supreme Brahmanthe imperishable supreme Brahman·प्रदीपकलिकोपमम् (pradīpakalikopamam) — like the flame of a lamplike the flame of a lamp·सदाशिवाख्यं स्वं रूपं (sadāśivākhyaṃ svaṃ rūpaṃ) — his own form called Sadāśivahis own form called Sadāśiva·निर्विकारमजात्परम् (nirvikāramajātparam) — unchanging, beyond the unbornunchanging, beyond the unborn

निर्गुणं सगुणं तच्च (nirguṇaṃ saguṇaṃ tacca) — that, without qualities and with qualitiesthat, without qualities and with qualities·निर्विशेषं निरीहकम् (nirviśeṣaṃ nirīhakam) — without distinction, without strivingwithout distinction, without striving·अतः पश्यति सर्वत्र (ataḥ paśyati sarvatra) — therefore he beholds it everywheretherefore he beholds it everywhere·न तु बाह्यं निरीक्षते (na tu bāhyaṃ nirīkṣate) — but looks not upon anything externalbut looks not upon anything external

इति स श्रूयते नित्यं (iti sa śrūyate nityaṃ) — this is ever heardthis is ever heard·किन्नराणां मुखान्मुने (kinnarāṇāṃ mukhānmune) — from the mouths of the kinnaras, O sagefrom the mouths of the kinnaras, O sage·इहागतानां सुप्रीत्या (ihāgatānāṃ suprītyā) — who come here, with great affectionwho come here, with great affection·किं तन्मिथ्यावचो ध्रुवम् (kiṃ tanmithyāvaco dhruvam) — can that word certainly be falsecan that word certainly be false

विशेषतः श्रूयते स (viśeṣataḥ śrūyate sa) — in particular, it is heard that hein particular, it is heard that he·साक्षान्नाम्ना तथा हरः (sākṣānnāmnā tathā haraḥ) — Hara himself, by name, likewiseHara himself, by name, likewise·समयं कृतवान्पूर्वं (samayaṃ kṛtavānpūrvaṃ) — made a vow in the pastmade a vow in the past·तन्मया गदितं शृणु (tanmayā gaditaṃ śṛṇu) — hear it, told by mehear it, told by me

त्वामृतेऽन्यां वरये (tvāmṛte'nyāṃ varaye) — apart from you, another I shall chooseapart from you, another I shall choose·दाक्षायणि सति प्रिये (dākṣāyaṇi sati priye) — O daughter of Dakṣa, O Satī, O belovedO daughter of Dakṣa, O Satī, O beloved·भार्यार्थं न ग्रहीष्यामि (bhāryārthaṃ na grahīṣyāmi) — I shall not take her as a wifeI shall not take her as a wife·सत्यमेतद् ब्रवीमि ते (satyametad bravīmi te) — this truth I speak to youthis truth I speak to you

इति सत्या समं तेन (iti satyā samaṃ tena) — thus, with Satī, by himthus, with Satī, by him·पुरैव समयः कृतः (puraiva samayaḥ kṛtaḥ) — the vow was made long agothe vow was made long ago·तस्यां मृतायां स कथं (tasyāṃ mṛtāyāṃ sa kathaṃ) — now that she has died, how will henow that she has died, how will he·स्वयमन्यां ग्रहीष्यति (svayamanyāṃ grahīṣyati) — himself take anotherhimself take another

इत्युक्त्वा स गिरिः (ityuktvā sa giriḥ) — having said this, the mountainhaving said this, the mountain·तूष्णीमास तस्य पुरस्तव (tūṣṇīmāsa tasya purastava) — fell silent before youfell silent before you·तदाकर्ण्याथ देवर्षे (tadākarṇyātha devarṣe) — then, having heard it, O divine sagethen, having heard it, O divine sage·त्वं प्रावोचः सुतत्त्वतः (tvaṃ prāvocaḥ sutattvataḥ) — you spoke this, with true understandingyou spoke this, with true understanding
