विधे गते स्वकं धाम (vidhe gate svakaṃ dhāma) — O Vidhi, when [I] had gone to my own abodeO Vidhi, when [I] had gone to my own abode·मयि वै दिव्यदर्शने (mayi vai divyadarśane) — I, indeed, of divine sightI, indeed, of divine sight·ततः किमभवत्तात (tataḥ kimabhavattāta) — what happened then, dear onewhat happened then, dear one·कृपया तद्वदाधुना (kṛpayā tadvadādhunā) — by your grace, tell it nowby your grace, tell it now

गते त्वयि मुने स्वर्गे (gate tvayi mune svarge) — O sage, when you had gone to heavenO sage, when you had gone to heaven·कियत्काले गते सति (kiyatkāle gate sati) — and some time had passedand some time had passed·मेना प्राप्यैकदा शैलनिकटं (menā prāpyaikadā śailanikaṭaṃ) — Menā, having once come near the mountainMenā, having once come near the mountain·प्रणनाम सा (praṇanāma sā) — bowed to himbowed to him

स्थित्वा सविनयं प्राह (sthitvā savinayaṃ prāha) — standing there, she humbly addressedstanding there, she humbly addressed·स्वनाथं गिरिकामिनी (svanāthaṃ girikāminī) — her own husband, the mountain's beloved wifeher own husband, the mountain's beloved wife·तत्र शैलाधिनाथं सा (tatra śailādhināthaṃ sā) — there, the lord of the mountain, shethere, the lord of the mountain, she·प्राणप्रियसुता सती (prāṇapriyasutā satī) — the virtuous woman whose daughter was dearer than lifethe virtuous woman whose daughter was dearer than life

मुनिवाक्यं न बुद्धं मे (munivākyaṃ na buddhaṃ me) — the sage's word I have not understoodthe sage's word I have not understood·सम्यङ् नारीस्वभावतः (samyaṅ nārīsvabhāvataḥ) — rightly, being of woman's naturerightly, being of woman's nature·विवाहं कुरु कन्यायाः (vivāhaṃ kuru kanyāyāḥ) — make the marriage of our daughtermake the marriage of our daughter·सुन्दरेण वरेण ह (sundareṇa vareṇa ha) — with a handsome bridegroomwith a handsome bridegroom

सर्वथा हि भवेत्तत्र (sarvathā hi bhavettatra) — in every way, there should bein every way, there should be·उद्वाहोऽपूर्वसुखावहः (udvāho'pūrvasukhāvahaḥ) — a marriage bringing unprecedented happinessa marriage bringing unprecedented happiness·वरश्च गिरिजायास्तु (varaśca girijāyāstu) — and let Girijā's bridegroomand let Girijā's bridegroom·सुलक्षणकुलोद्भवः (sulakṣaṇakulodbhavaḥ) — be one of good signs and noble birthbe one of good signs and noble birth

प्राणप्रिया सुता मे हि (prāṇapriyā sutā me hi) — my daughter is dearer to me than lifemy daughter is dearer to me than life·सुखिता स्याद्यथा प्रिया (sukhitā syādyathā priyā) — so that she, my beloved, may be happyso that she, my beloved, may be happy·सद्वरं प्राप्य सुप्रीता (sadvaraṃ prāpya suprītā) — having obtained a good bridegroom, well pleasedhaving obtained a good bridegroom, well pleased·तथा कुरु नमोऽस्तु ते (tathā kuru namo'stu te) — act accordingly — homage to youact accordingly — homage to you

इत्युक्त्वाश्रुमुखी मेना (ityuktvāśrumukhī menā) — having said this, Menā, her face wet with tearshaving said this, Menā, her face wet with tears·पत्यङ्घ्र्योः पतिता तदा (patyaṅghryoḥ patitā tadā) — fell then at her husband's feetfell then at her husband's feet·तामुत्थाप्य गिरिः प्राह (tāmutthāpya giriḥ prāha) — raising her up, the mountain spokeraising her up, the mountain spoke·यथावत्प्राज्ञसत्तमः (yathāvatprājñasattamaḥ) — fittingly, foremost of the wisefittingly, foremost of the wise

शृणु त्वं मेनके देवि (śṛṇu tvaṃ menake devi) — hear me, O Menakā, O goddesshear me, O Menakā, O goddess·यथार्थं वच्मि तत्त्वतः (yathārthaṃ vacmi tattvataḥ) — I speak truly, according to the real matterI speak truly, according to the real matter·भ्रमं त्यज मुनेर्वाक्यं (bhramaṃ tyaja munervākyaṃ) — give up your delusion; the sage's wordgive up your delusion; the sage's word·वितथं न कदाचन (vitathaṃ na kadācana) — is never falseis never false

यदि स्नेहः सुतायास्ते (yadi snehaḥ sutāyāste) — if you have affection for your daughterif you have affection for your daughter·सुतां शिक्षय सादरम् (sutāṃ śikṣaya sādaram) — instruct her respectfullyinstruct her respectfully·तपः कुर्याच्छंकरस्य (tapaḥ kuryācchaṃkarasya) — that she may perform austerity for Śaṅkarathat she may perform austerity for Śaṅkara·सा भक्त्या स्थिरचेतसा (sā bhaktyā sthiracetasā) — with devotion and a steady mindwith devotion and a steady mind

चेत्प्रसन्नः शिवः काल्याः (cetprasannaḥ śivaḥ kālyāḥ) — if Śiva, pleased, of Kālīif Śiva, pleased, of Kālī·पाणिं गृह्णाति मेनके (pāṇiṃ gṛhṇāti menake) — takes the hand, O Menakātakes the hand, O Menakā·सर्वं भूयाच्छुभं (sarvaṃ bhūyācchubhaṃ) — all will be auspiciousall will be auspicious·नश्येन्नारदोक्तममङ्गलम् (naśyennāradoktamamaṅgalam) — and the ill omen spoken by Nārada will perishand the ill omen spoken by Nārada will perish

अमङ्गलानि सर्वाणि (amaṅgalāni sarvāṇi) — all inauspicious thingsall inauspicious things·मङ्गलानि सदा शिवे (maṅgalāni sadā śive) — become auspicious ever, near Śivabecome auspicious ever, near Śiva·तस्मात्सुतां शिवप्राप्त्यै (tasmātsutāṃ śivaprāptyai) — therefore your daughter, for attaining Śivatherefore your daughter, for attaining Śiva·तपसे शिक्षय द्रुतम् (tapase śikṣaya drutam) — instruct in austerity, quicklyinstruct in austerity, quickly

इत्याकर्ण्य गिरेर्वाक्यं (ityākarṇya girervākyaṃ) — hearing this word of the mountainhearing this word of the mountain·मेना प्रीततराभवत् (menā prītatarābhavat) — Menā became greatly pleasedMenā became greatly pleased·सुतोपकंठमगमत् (sutopakaṃṭhamagamat) — went to her daughter's sidewent to her daughter's side·उपदेष्टुं तपोरुचिम् (upadeṣṭuṃ taporucim) — to instruct her in a taste for austerityto instruct her in a taste for austerity

सुताङ्गं सुकुमारं हि (sutāṅgaṃ sukumāraṃ hi) — her daughter's very delicate limbsher daughter's very delicate limbs·दृष्ट्वातीवाथ मेनका (dṛṣṭvātīvātha menakā) — seeing, Menakā was exceedingly [distressed]seeing, Menakā was exceedingly [distressed]·विव्यथे नेत्रयुग्मे च (vivyathe netrayugme ca) — was distressed, and her two eyeswas distressed, and her two eyes·अश्रुपूर्णेऽभवतां द्रुतम् (aśrupūrṇe'bhavatāṃ drutam) — at once became filled with tearsat once became filled with tears

सुतां समुपदेष्टुं तत् (sutāṃ samupadeṣṭuṃ tat) — to instruct her daughter, thatto instruct her daughter, that·न शशाक गिरिप्रिया (na śaśāka giripriyā) — the mountain's beloved could notthe mountain's beloved could not·बुबुधे पार्वती तद्वै (bubudhe pārvatī tadvai) — Pārvatī understood that, indeedPārvatī understood that, indeed·जननीङ्गितमाशु सा (jananīṅgitamāśu sā) — her mother's intent, quicklyher mother's intent, quickly

अथ सा कालिका देवी (atha sā kālikā devī) — then that goddess Kālikāthen that goddess Kālikā·सर्वज्ञा परमेश्वरी (sarvajñā parameśvarī) — the all-knowing supreme sovereignthe all-knowing supreme sovereign·उवाच जननीं सद्यः (uvāca jananīṃ sadyaḥ) — spoke to her mother at oncespoke to her mother at once·समाश्वास्य पुनः पुनः (samāśvāsya punaḥ punaḥ) — having comforted her again and againhaving comforted her again and again

मातः श्रृणु महाप्राज्ञे (mātaḥ śrṛṇu mahāprājñe) — O mother, O most wise one, hearO mother, O most wise one, hear·अद्यतनेऽजमुहूर्तके (adyatane'jamuhūrtake) — in today's Brahmā-hourin today's Brahmā-hour·रात्रौ दृष्टो मया स्वप्नः (rātrau dṛṣṭo mayā svapnaḥ) — in the night I saw a dreamin the night I saw a dream·तं वदामि कृपां कुरु (taṃ vadāmi kṛpāṃ kuru) — I shall tell it — have compassionI shall tell it — have compassion

विप्रश्चैव तपस्वी (vipraścaiva tapasvī) — a brāhmaṇa, an ascetica brāhmaṇa, an ascetic·मां सदयः प्रीतिपूर्वकम् (māṃ sadayaḥ prītipūrvakam) — me, compassionate, lovinglyme, compassionate, lovingly·उपादिदेश सुतपः कर्तुं (upādideśa sutapaḥ kartuṃ) — instructed me to perform excellent austerityinstructed me to perform excellent austerity·मातः शिवस्य वै (mātaḥ śivasya vai) — O mother, for Śiva indeedO mother, for Śiva indeed

तच्छ्रुत्वा मेनका शीघ्रं (tacchrutvā menakā śīghraṃ) — hearing this, Menakā quicklyhearing this, Menakā quickly·पतिमाहूय तत्र च (patimāhūya tatra ca) — summoned her husband theresummoned her husband there·तत्स्वप्नं कथयामास (tatsvapnaṃ kathayāmāsa) — told that dreamtold that dream·सुतादृष्टमशेषतः (sutādṛṣṭamaśeṣataḥ) — which her daughter had seen, fullywhich her daughter had seen, fully

सुतास्वप्नमथाकर्ण्य (sutāsvapnamathākarṇya) — then, hearing his daughter's dreamthen, hearing his daughter's dream·मेनकातो गिरीश्वरः (menakāto girīśvaraḥ) — from Menakā, the lord of the mountainfrom Menakā, the lord of the mountain·उवाच परमप्रीतः (uvāca paramaprītaḥ) — spoke, greatly pleasedspoke, greatly pleased·प्रियां सम्बोधयन्गिरा (priyāṃ sambodhayangirā) — addressing his beloved with wordsaddressing his beloved with words

हे प्रियेऽपररात्रान्ते (he priye'pararātrānte) — O beloved, at the end of the latter part of the nightO beloved, at the end of the latter part of the night·स्वप्नो दृष्टो मयापि हि (svapno dṛṣṭo mayāpi hi) — I too indeed saw a dreamI too indeed saw a dream·तं शृणु त्वं महाप्रीत्या (taṃ śṛṇu tvaṃ mahāprītyā) — hear it, with great lovehear it, with great love·वच्म्यहं ते समादरात् (vacmyahaṃ te samādarāt) — I shall tell it to you with reverenceI shall tell it to you with reverence

एकस्तपस्वी परमो (ekastapasvī paramo) — a certain supreme ascetica certain supreme ascetic·नारदोक्तवराङ्गधृक् (nāradoktavarāṅgadhṛk) — bearing the bodily signs of the bridegroom spoken of by Nāradabearing the bodily signs of the bridegroom spoken of by Nārada·पुरोपकंठं सुप्रीत्या (puropakaṃṭhaṃ suprītyā) — near our city, with great delightnear our city, with great delight·तपः कर्तुं समागतः (tapaḥ kartuṃ samāgataḥ) — came to perform austeritycame to perform austerity

गृहीत्वा स्वसुतां तत्र (gṛhītvā svasutāṃ tatra) — taking my own daughter, theretaking my own daughter, there·अगमं प्रीततरोऽप्यहम् (agamaṃ prītataro'pyaham) — I too, greatly pleased, wentI too, greatly pleased, went·मया ज्ञातः स वै शम्भुः (mayā jñātaḥ sa vai śambhuḥ) — I recognised he was indeed ŚambhuI recognised he was indeed Śambhu·नारदोक्तवरः प्रभुः (nāradoktavaraḥ prabhuḥ) — the lord, the bridegroom spoken of by Nāradathe lord, the bridegroom spoken of by Nārada

सेवार्थं तस्य तनयाम् (sevārthaṃ tasya tanayām) — for his service, my daughterfor his service, my daughter·उपदिश्य तपस्विनः (upadiśya tapasvinaḥ) — having instructed, of that ascetichaving instructed, of that ascetic·तं वै प्रार्थितवांस्तस्यां (taṃ vai prārthitavāṃstasyāṃ) — I indeed entreated him regarding herI indeed entreated him regarding her·न तदाङ्गीचकार सः (na tadāṅgīcakāra saḥ) — but he did not then consentbut he did not then consent

अभूद्विवादः सुमहान् (abhūdvivādaḥ sumahān) — a very great debate arosea very great debate arose·सांख्यवेदान्तसंमतः (sāṃkhyavedāntasaṃmataḥ) — concerning what is held by Sāṅkhya and Vedāntaconcerning what is held by Sāṅkhya and Vedānta·ततस्तदाज्ञया तत्र (tatastadājñayā tatra) — then, by his command, therethen, by his command, there·संस्थितासीत्सुता मम (saṃsthitāsītsutā mama) — my daughter remained stationedmy daughter remained stationed

निधाय हृदि तं कामं (nidhāya hṛdi taṃ kāmaṃ) — holding that desire in her heartholding that desire in her heart·सिषेवे भक्तितश्च सा (siṣeve bhaktitaśca sā) — she served him with devotionshe served him with devotion·इति दृष्टं मया स्वप्नं (iti dṛṣṭaṃ mayā svapnaṃ) — this is the dream I sawthis is the dream I saw·प्रोक्तवांस्ते वरानने (proktavāṃste varānane) — I have told it to you, O fair-faced oneI have told it to you, O fair-faced one

ततो मेने कियत्कालं (tato mene kiyatkālaṃ) — therefore I think, for some timetherefore I think, for some time·परीक्ष्यं तत्फलं प्रिये (parīkṣyaṃ tatphalaṃ priye) — its outcome should be tested, O belovedits outcome should be tested, O beloved·योग्यमस्तीदमेवेह (yogyamastīdameveha) — this alone is fitting herethis alone is fitting here·बुध्यस्व त्वं मम ध्रुवम् (budhyasva tvaṃ mama dhruvam) — know this to be my firm resolveknow this to be my firm resolve

इत्युक्त्वा गिरिराजश्च (ityuktvā girirājaśca) — having said this, the king of mountainshaving said this, the king of mountains·मेनका वै मुनीश्वर (menakā vai munīśvara) — and Menakā, O lord of sagesand Menakā, O lord of sages·सन्तस्थतुः परीक्षन्तौ (santasthatuḥ parīkṣantau) — remained, testingremained, testing·तत्फलं शुद्धचेतसौ (tatphalaṃ śuddhacetasau) — that outcome, their minds purethat outcome, their minds pure

इत्थं व्यतीतेऽल्पदिने (itthaṃ vyatīte'lpadine) — thus, when but a little time had passedthus, when but a little time had passed·परमेशः सतां गतिः (parameśaḥ satāṃ gatiḥ) — the supreme lord, the refuge of the virtuousthe supreme lord, the refuge of the virtuous·सतीविरहसुव्यग्रः (satīvirahasuvyagraḥ) — greatly agitated by separation from Satīgreatly agitated by separation from Satī·भ्रमन्सर्वत्र सूतिकृत् (bhramansarvatra sūtikṛt) — wandering everywhere, the maker of creationwandering everywhere, the maker of creation

तत्राजगाम सुप्रीत्या (tatrājagāma suprītyā) — there he came with great delightthere he came with great delight·कियद्गणयुतः प्रभुः (kiyadgaṇayutaḥ prabhuḥ) — the lord, accompanied by some gaṇasthe lord, accompanied by some gaṇas·तपः कर्तुं (tapaḥ kartuṃ) — to perform austerityto perform austerity·सतीप्रेमविरहाकुलमानसः (satīpremavirahākulamānasaḥ) — his mind troubled by separation from Satī's lovehis mind troubled by separation from Satī's love

तपश्चकार स्वं तत्र (tapaścakāra svaṃ tatra) — there he performed his own austeritythere he performed his own austerity·पार्वती सेवने रता (pārvatī sevane ratā) — while Pārvatī, devoted to servicewhile Pārvatī, devoted to service·सखीभ्यां सहिता नित्यं (sakhībhyāṃ sahitā nityaṃ) — together with her two friends, evertogether with her two friends, ever·प्रसन्नार्थमभूत्तदा (prasannārthamabhūttadā) — was then occupied in pleasing himwas then occupied in pleasing him

विद्धोऽपि मार्गणैः शम्भुः (viddho'pi mārgaṇaiḥ śambhuḥ) — though pierced by arrows, Śambhuthough pierced by arrows, Śambhu·विकृतिं नाप सप्रभुः (vikṛtiṃ nāpa saprabhuḥ) — the mighty lord did not attain disturbancethe mighty lord did not attain disturbance·प्रेषितेन सुरैः (preṣitena suraiḥ) — sent by the godssent by the gods·स्वात्ममोहनार्थं स्मरेण वै (svātmamohanārthaṃ smareṇa vai) — by Kāma, for the deluding of his own selfby Kāma, for the deluding of his own self

दग्ध्वा स्मरं च तत्रैव (dagdhvā smaraṃ ca tatraiva) — having, right there, burned Kāmahaving, right there, burned Kāma·स्ववह्निनयनेन सः (svavahninayanena saḥ) — with the fire of his own eye, hewith the fire of his own eye, he·स्मृत्वा मम वचः क्रुद्धः (smṛtvā mama vacaḥ kruddhaḥ) — remembering my word, angeredremembering my word, angered·महानन्तर्दधे ततः (mahānantardadhe tataḥ) — the great one then vanished from sightthe great one then vanished from sight

लौकिकाचारमाश्रित्य (laukikācāramāśritya) — resorting to worldly customresorting to worldly custom·रुद्रो विष्णुप्रसादितः (rudro viṣṇuprasāditaḥ) — Rudra, propitiated by ViṣṇuRudra, propitiated by Viṣṇu·कालीं विवाहयामास (kālīṃ vivāhayāmāsa) — married Kālīmarried Kālī·ततोऽभूद्बहुमङ्गलम् (tato'bhūdbahumaṅgalam) — and there was much auspiciousness on that occasionand there was much auspiciousness on that occasion

इत्येतत्कथितं तात (ityetatkathitaṃ tāta) — thus, dear one, this has been toldthus, dear one, this has been told·समासाच्चरितं विभोः (samāsāccaritaṃ vibhoḥ) — in brief, the story of the mighty lordin brief, the story of the mighty lord·शंकरस्य परं दिव्यं (śaṃkarasya paraṃ divyaṃ) — of Śaṅkara, supremely divineof Śaṅkara, supremely divine·किं भूयः श्रोतुमिच्छसि (kiṃ bhūyaḥ śrotumicchasi) — what more do you wish to hearwhat more do you wish to hear
