Chapter 54 · The Dharma of the Devoted Wife · Verses 1–83

Brahmā continues his narration to Nārada: the Seven Sages told Himavān, the lord of the mountains, to arrange without delay the fitting departure of his own daughter Pārvatī to her husband's abode. Hearing this, Himavān, realizing the sorrow of separation to come, was for a time overcome with grief out of great love, but soon regained his composure and, saying "so be it," sent word to his wife Menā. Menā, torn between joy and sorrow, set about the customary rites of her own lineage, and manifold festivity arose; she adorned Girijā with excellent jewels, garments, and the twelve traditional ornaments befitting royalty. Perceiving what was in Menā's mind, a certain virtuous brāhmaṇa's wife came forward and instructed Girijā in the supreme vow of pativratā-dharma, the discipline of a wife wholly devoted to her husband. Addressing Pārvatī with great affection, she declared that the pativratā woman is blessed beyond all others, a purifier of all worlds and destroyer of sin, who through loving service to her husband as to the Supreme Lord enjoys every happiness here and attains the auspicious state hereafter together with him; she named the great pativratās of old — Sāvitrī, Lopāmudrā, Arundhatī, Śāṇḍilyā, Śatarūpā, Anasūyā, Lakṣmī, Svadhā, Satī, Saṃjñā, Sumati, Śraddhā, Menā, Svāhā, and many others unnamed for brevity — who by this dharma alone became worshipped even by Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Hara. She taught Pārvatī, since her own husband is Śaṅkara himself, that she must always serve him with reverence, since he is the benefactor of the humble and refuge of the virtuous, and expounded at length the practical discipline of the devoted wife: to eat and sleep only after her husband, to remain modestly adorned only for him, never to utter his personal name, to bear harsh words and even blows without returning them, to attend him promptly when called, never to linger at others' doors or share her family's goods without leave, never to undertake a pilgrimage or a vow without his sanction (for the water of his feet is itself equal to every sacred tīrtha), to accept his leftover food as a great blessing, to share what she eats with gods, ancestors, guests, servants, cattle, and mendicants before herself, to remain orderly, skilful, cheerful, and free of extravagance, never to disturb him at rest, never to slight him whatever his condition — poor, sick, aged, happy, or sorrowful — to observe due seclusion and silence during her monthly courses, to look upon no man's face before her bathed husband's, to keep the marks and ornaments of marriage always upon her, to shun the company of washerwomen, courtesans, heterodox ascetics, ill-fated women, and any woman hostile to her own husband, never to remain alone, bathe unclothed, or sit upon inauspicious household objects such as the mortar, pestle, or threshold, to show no boldness except in the proper season of intimacy, to share his moods of joy and sorrow, to remain unchanged in prosperity and adversity, never to complain to him of household want, to hold him dearer than even Brahmā, Viṣṇu, or Hara, and never to answer him back in anger, take a higher seat than his, slander others, quarrel, or speak loudly or laugh before elders — but rather to welcome him home with food, water, betel, fresh garments, foot-massage, and sweet words, since a father, brother, or son gives only a measured portion, while the husband alone is the giver without measure, being at once her deity, guru, dharma, pilgrimage, and vow. She warned of the retributions that befall a wife who forsakes these duties — becoming an owl, a wildcat, a squint-eyed woman, a sow, a mute, or a filth-eating jackal in future births, and dragging down three generations each of her father's, mother's, and husband's lineages — while the true pativratā purifies with her very footstep the ground she walks on, and is sought out even by the sun, moon, wind, and waters for their own purification, and is to be worshipped, together with her husband, as the visible embodiment of Umā and Śiva, for the husband is the mantra of liberation and the wife the Veda itself, blessed together as husband and wife. The brāhmaṇa's wife further explained the fourfold classification of pativratās — the best, whose mind clings to her own husband alone even in dreams; the middling, who regards other men with the innocence due a father, brother, or son; the inferior, who abstains from wrongdoing only through intellectual knowledge of duty; and the lowest, who abstains only from fear of her husband and family's disgrace — all four nonetheless being destroyers of sin and objects of joy in this world and the next; she cited the story of how, by the power of the chastity of Atri's wife and the entreaty of the three gods, a certain brāhmaṇa slain by a boar's curse was restored to life. Concluding, she reminded Pārvatī that since she herself is the World-Mother and Śiva is her very husband, women become devoted wives simply by remembering her, so that this teaching, however superfluous before the goddess herself, was offered only in keeping with the custom of the world. Having spoken thus, the brāhmaṇa's wife bowed to Pārvatī and fell silent, and Pārvatī, the beloved of Śaṅkara, was filled with great joy.
