Brahmā continues his narration to Nārada: the gods, headed by Viṣṇu, and the sages, having completed their necessary rites, made ready to depart from Himavān's mountain. Himavān, having bathed and worshipped his chosen deity, summoned the townsfolk and his kinsmen and went joyfully to the Janavāsa, where he begged Śiva to stay some days longer in his house, saying that his very sight had made him fulfilled and blessed. Śiva agreed, and the mountain-lord invited the Lord together with Viṣṇu and the other gods; they in turn praised Himavān as blessed beyond compare, at whose door the supreme Lord himself, affectionate to his devotees, had come. They praised the incomparable delight of the Janavāsa and its food, and declared themselves blessed to have come where the goddess Śivā herself dwelt. Amid mutual praise, manifold festivity broke out with Vedic chant, songs, dancing apsarases, and lavish gifts. Himavān then invited the lord of the gods to his own house and began the feast according to due rites, lovingly bringing Śiva and his retinue in; having reverently washed the feet of Śambhu, Viṣṇu, Brahmā, and all the immortals and sages, and seated the other guests with his kinsmen inside the pavilion, he satisfied everyone with delicious foods of many kinds, while the women of the city laughingly offered playful banter. Having eaten, rinsed their hands, and taken leave, all went to their own dwellings, delighted and satisfied. On the third day too Himavān duly honoured them with gifts and reverence; on the fourth day the Caturthī rite was duly performed with purity, without which the ceremony would have remained incomplete, and festivity of song, dance, and gift-giving continued. On the fifth day the joyful gods requested the mountain-lord's leave to depart; he, with joined hands, begged them to stay yet a few days more and show him grace, and so, out of affection, kept the Lord, Viṣṇu, Brahmā, and the rest for many more days with daily honour. When many days had thus passed, the gods sent the Seven Sages to Himavān, who instructed him and Menā, fittingly and joyfully declaring the supreme truth of Śiva; through their teaching Himavān consented, and Śiva, together with the gods, went to him for leave to depart. As the Lord of the gods set out toward his own mountain with the gods, Menā wept aloud and begged him, the treasury of compassion, to cherish Śivā and forgive Pārvatī her thousand faults, telling him that her daughter was devoted to his lotus feet birth after birth, filled with tears of joy at the mere mention of devotion to him and struck mute as though dead at any censure of him. Having said this, Menā entrusted her daughter to him and, weeping loudly, swooned before the two of them; Śiva then revived her, took leave of her and of the mountain-lord, and set out on the journey amid great festivity, all the immortals following him in silence with Śiva held foremost. In a garden outside Himācala's city, the delighted gods remained with the Lord amid festivity, awaiting his return. Thus, says Brahmā to Nārada, has been told the goodly journey of Śiva together with the gods; now hear of Śiva's further journey, joined at once with the sorrow of parting and with festivity.
