ततो गिरिवरः स्नात्वा (tato girivaraḥ snātvā) — then the best of mountains, having bathedthen the best of mountains, having bathed·स्वेष्टं सम्पूज्य यत्नतः (sveṣṭaṃ sampūjya yatnataḥ) — and diligently worshipped his chosen deityand diligently worshipped his chosen deity·पौरबन्धून्समाहूय (paurabandhūnsamāhūya) — having summoned the townsfolk and kinsmenhaving summoned the townsfolk and kinsmen·जनवासं ययौ मुदा (janavāsaṃ yayau mudā) — went joyfully to the Janavāsawent joyfully to the Janavāsa

तत्र प्रभुं प्रपूज्याथ (tatra prabhuṃ prapūjyātha) — there, having duly worshipped the Lordthere, having duly worshipped the Lord·चक्रे सम्प्रार्थनां मुदा (cakre samprārthanāṃ mudā) — he joyfully made this entreatyhe joyfully made this entreaty·कियद्दिनानि सन्तिष्ठ (kiyaddināni santiṣṭha) — "stay a few days more"stay a few days more·मद्गेहे सकलैः सह (madgehe sakalaiḥ saha) — in my house, together with all [these]"in my house, together with all [these]"

विलोकनेन ते शम्भो (vilokanena te śambho) — by the sight of you, O Śambhuby the sight of you, O Śambhu·कृतार्थोऽहं न संशयः (kṛtārtho'haṃ na saṃśayaḥ) — I have become fulfilled, without doubtI have become fulfilled, without doubt·धन्यश्च यस्य मद्गेहे (dhanyaśca yasya madgehe) — and blessed am I, to whose houseand blessed am I, to whose house·आयातोऽसि सुरैः सह (āyāto'si suraiḥ saha) — you have come together with the godsyou have come together with the gods

इत्युक्त्वा बहु शैलेशः (ityuktvā bahu śaileśaḥ) — having spoken thus at length, the lord of the mountainhaving spoken thus at length, the lord of the mountain·करौ बद्ध्वा प्रणम्य च (karau baddhvā praṇamya ca) — with joined hands, and having bowedwith joined hands, and having bowed·प्रभुं निमन्त्रयामास (prabhuṃ nimantrayāmāsa) — invited the Lordinvited the Lord·सह विष्णुसुरादिभिः (saha viṣṇusurādibhiḥ) — together with Viṣṇu and the other godstogether with Viṣṇu and the other gods

अथ ते मनसा गत्वा (atha te manasā gatvā) — then they, having in mind gone [to him]then they, having in mind gone [to him]·शिव संयुतमादरात् (śiva saṃyutamādarāt) — to Śiva, joined together with reverenceto Śiva, joined together with reverence·प्रत्यूचुर्मुनयो देवा (pratyūcurmunayo devā) — the sages and the gods repliedthe sages and the gods replied·हृष्टा विष्णुसुरादिभिः (hṛṣṭā viṣṇusurādibhiḥ) — delighted, together with Viṣṇu and the other godsdelighted, together with Viṣṇu and the other gods

धन्यस्त्वं गिरिशार्दूल (dhanyastvaṃ giriśārdūla) — "blessed are you, O tiger among mountains"blessed are you, O tiger among mountains·तव कीर्तिर्महीयसी (tava kīrtirmahīyasī) — your fame is very greatyour fame is very great·त्वत्समो न त्रिलोकेषु (tvatsamo na trilokeṣu) — in the three worlds none equal to youin the three worlds none equal to you·कोऽपि पुण्यतमो जनः (ko'pi puṇyatamo janaḥ) — is there any person of greater merit"is there any person of greater merit"

यस्य द्वारि महेशानः (yasya dvāri maheśānaḥ) — at whose door the great Lordat whose door the great Lord·परब्रह्म सतां गतिः (parabrahma satāṃ gatiḥ) — the supreme Brahman, the refuge of the virtuousthe supreme Brahman, the refuge of the virtuous·समागतः सदासैश्च (samāgataḥ sadāsaiśca) — has come, together with [all] his hostshas come, together with [all] his hosts·कृपया भक्तवत्सलः (kṛpayā bhaktavatsalaḥ) — out of grace, [he who is] affectionate to his devoteesout of grace, [he who is] affectionate to his devotees

जनावासोऽतिरम्यश्च (janāvāso'tiramyaśca) — "the Janavāsa is exceedingly delightful"the Janavāsa is exceedingly delightful·सम्मानो विविधः कृतः (sammāno vividhaḥ kṛtaḥ) — manifold honour has been shownmanifold honour has been shown·भोजनानि त्वपूर्वाणि (bhojanāni tvapūrvāṇi) — the meals are unprecedentedthe meals are unprecedented·न वर्ण्यानि गिरीश्वर (na varṇyāni girīśvara) — beyond description, O lord of the mountain"beyond description, O lord of the mountain"

चित्रं न खलु तत्रास्ति (citraṃ na khalu tatrāsti) — "it is indeed no wonder there"it is indeed no wonder there·यत्र देवी शिवाम्बिका (yatra devī śivāmbikā) — where the goddess, Mother Śivā, dwellswhere the goddess, Mother Śivā, dwells·परिपूर्णमशेषं च (paripūrṇamaśeṣaṃ ca) — everything there is utterly completeeverything there is utterly complete·वयं धन्या यदागताः (vayaṃ dhanyā yadāgatāḥ) — blessed are we, that we have come here"blessed are we, that we have come here"

अभून्मङ्गलगानं च (abhūnmaṅgalagānaṃ ca) — auspicious songs aroseauspicious songs arose·ननर्ताप्सरसाङ्गणः (nanartāpsarasāṅgaṇaḥ) — the apsarases danced in the courtyardthe apsarases danced in the courtyard·नुतिं चक्रुर्मागधाद्या (nutiṃ cakrurmāgadhādyā) — the bards and heralds sang eulogiesthe bards and heralds sang eulogies·द्रव्यदानमभूद् बहु (dravyadānamabhūd bahu) — and much wealth was given awayand much wealth was given away

तत आमन्त्रय देवेशं (tata āmantraya deveśaṃ) — then, having invited the lord of the godsthen, having invited the lord of the gods·स्वगेहमगमद्गिरिः (svagehamagamadgiriḥ) — the mountain went to his own housethe mountain went to his own house·भोजनोत्सवमारेभे (bhojanotsavamārebhe) — and began the feastand began the feast·नानाविधिविधानतः (nānāvidhividhānataḥ) — according to manifold rites and ordinancesaccording to manifold rites and ordinances

भोजनार्थं प्रभुं प्रीत्या (bhojanārthaṃ prabhuṃ prītyā) — lovingly, for the meal, the Lordlovingly, for the meal, the Lord·आनयामास यथोचितम् (ānayāmāsa yathocitam) — he brought, as was fittinghe brought, as was fitting·परिवारसमेतं च (parivārasametaṃ ca) — together with his retinuetogether with his retinue·सकुतूहलमीश्वरम् (sakutūhalamīśvaram) — the Lord [who came] full of curious delightthe Lord [who came] full of curious delight

प्रक्षाल्य चरणौ शम्भोः (prakṣālya caraṇau śambhoḥ) — having washed the feet of Śambhuhaving washed the feet of Śambhu·विष्णोर्मम वरादरात् (viṣṇormama varādarāt) — of Viṣṇu, and of me, with great reverenceof Viṣṇu, and of me, with great reverence·सर्वेषाममराणां च (sarveṣāmamarāṇāṃ ca) — and of all the immortalsand of all the immortals·मुनीनां च यथार्थतः (munīnāṃ ca yathārthataḥ) — and of the sages, duly and trulyand of the sages, duly and truly

परेषां च गतानां च (pareṣāṃ ca gatānāṃ ca) — and of the others who had comeand of the others who had come·गिरीशो मण्डपान्तरे (girīśo maṇḍapāntare) — the lord of the mountain, inside the pavilionthe lord of the mountain, inside the pavilion·आसयामास सुप्रीत्या (āsayāmāsa suprītyā) — seated them all with great affectionseated them all with great affection·तांस्तान्बन्धुभिरन्वितः (tāṃstānbandhubhiranvitaḥ) — accompanied by his own kinsmenaccompanied by his own kinsmen

सुरसैर्विविधान्नैश्च (surasairvividhānnaiśca) — with tasty foods of many kindswith tasty foods of many kinds·तर्पयामास तान् गिरिः (tarpayāmāsa tān giriḥ) — the mountain satisfied themthe mountain satisfied them·बुभुजुर्निखिलास्ते वै (bubhujurnikhilāste vai) — all of them ate indeedall of them ate indeed·शम्भुना विष्णुना मया (śambhunā viṣṇunā mayā) — together with Śambhu, Viṣṇu, and metogether with Śambhu, Viṣṇu, and me

तदानीं पुरनार्यश्च (tadānīṃ puranāryaśca) — at that time the women of the cityat that time the women of the city·गालीदानं व्यधुर्मुदा (gālīdānaṃ vyadhurmudā) — joyfully offered playful banterjoyfully offered playful banter·मृदुवाण्या हसन्त्यश्च (mṛduvāṇyā hasantyaśca) — laughing, with sweet speechlaughing, with sweet speech·पश्यन्त्यो यत्नतश्च तान् (paśyantyo yatnataśca tān) — and watching them attentivelyand watching them attentively

ते भुक्त्वाचम्य विधिवत् (te bhuktvācamya vidhivat) — they, having duly eaten and rinsedthey, having duly eaten and rinsed·गिरिमामन्त्र्य नारद (girimāmantrya nārada) — and, O Nārada, taken leave of the mountain-lordand, O Nārada, taken leave of the mountain-lord·स्वस्थानं प्रययुः सर्वे (svasthānaṃ prayayuḥ sarve) — all went to their own placesall went to their own places·मुदितास्तृप्तिमागताः (muditāstṛptimāgatāḥ) — delighted, having attained satisfactiondelighted, having attained satisfaction

इत्थं तृतीये घस्त्रेऽपि (itthaṃ tṛtīye ghastre'pi) — thus, on the third day alsothus, on the third day also·मानितास्तेऽभवन्मुने (mānitāste'bhavanmune) — they were honoured, O sagethey were honoured, O sage·गिरीश्वरेण विधिवत् (girīśvareṇa vidhivat) — by the lord of the mountain, dulyby the lord of the mountain, duly·दानमानादरादिभिः (dānamānādarādibhiḥ) — with gifts, honours, reverence, and the likewith gifts, honours, reverence, and the like

चतुर्थे दिवसे प्राप्ते (caturthe divase prāpte) — when the fourth day arrivedwhen the fourth day arrived·चतुर्थीकर्म शुद्धितः (caturthīkarma śuddhitaḥ) — the Caturthī rite, with due puritythe Caturthī rite, with due purity·बभूव विधिवद्येन (babhūva vidhivadyena) — was duly performed, without whichwas duly performed, without which·विना खण्डित एव सः (vinā khaṇḍita eva saḥ) — [the marriage-rite] itself would remain incomplete[the marriage-rite] itself would remain incomplete

उत्सवो विविधश्चासीत् (utsavo vividhaścāsīt) — there was manifold festivitythere was manifold festivity·साधुवादजयध्वनिः (sādhuvādajayadhvaniḥ) — with cries of "well done" and "victory"with cries of "well done" and "victory"·बहुदानं सुगानं च (bahudānaṃ sugānaṃ ca) — much giving, and sweet songmuch giving, and sweet song·नर्तनं विविधं तथा (nartanaṃ vividhaṃ tathā) — and likewise manifold dancingand likewise manifold dancing

पञ्चमे दिवसे प्राप्ते (pañcame divase prāpte) — when the fifth day arrivedwhen the fifth day arrived·सर्वे देवा मुदान्विताः (sarve devā mudānvitāḥ) — all the gods, filled with joyall the gods, filled with joy·विज्ञप्तिं चक्रिरे शैलं (vijñaptiṃ cakrire śailaṃ) — made a request to the mountain-lordmade a request to the mountain-lord·यात्रार्थमतिप्रेमतः (yātrārthamatipremataḥ) — for their departure, out of great affectionfor their departure, out of great affection

तदाकर्ण्य गिरीशश्च (tadākarṇya girīśaśca) — having heard this, the lord of the mountainhaving heard this, the lord of the mountain·उवाच देवान् कृताञ्जलिः (uvāca devān kṛtāñjaliḥ) — said to the gods, with joined handssaid to the gods, with joined hands·कियद्दिनानि तिष्ठन्तु (kiyaddināni tiṣṭhantu) — "stay a few days more"stay a few days more·कृपां कुर्वन्तु मां सुराः (kṛpāṃ kurvantu māṃ surāḥ) — O gods, and show grace to me"O gods, and show grace to me"

इत्युक्त्वा स्नेहतस्ताँश्च (ityuktvā snehatastā~śca) — having said this, out of affection, themhaving said this, out of affection, them·प्रभुं विष्णुं च मां परान् (prabhuṃ viṣṇuṃ ca māṃ parān) — the Lord, Viṣṇu, me, and the othersthe Lord, Viṣṇu, me, and the others·वासयामास दिवसान् बहून् (vāsayāmāsa divasān bahūn) — he made stay for many dayshe made stay for many days·नित्यं समादरात् (nityaṃ samādarāt) — daily, with great reverencedaily, with great reverence

इत्थं व्यतीयुर्दिवसा बहवो (itthaṃ vyatīyurdivasā bahavo) — thus many days passedthus many days passed·वसतां च तत् (vasatāṃ ca tat) — while dwelling therewhile dwelling there·सप्तर्षीन्प्रेषयामासुः (saptarṣīnpreṣayāmāsuḥ) — then the gods sent the Seven Sagesthen the gods sent the Seven Sages·गिरीशान्ते ततः सुराः (girīśānte tataḥ surāḥ) — to the presence of the mountain-lordto the presence of the mountain-lord

ते तं सम्बोधयामासुः (te taṃ sambodhayāmāsuḥ) — they explained to himthey explained to him·मेनां च समयोचितम् (menāṃ ca samayocitam) — and to Menā, [words] fitting the occasionand to Menā, [words] fitting the occasion·शिवतत्त्वं परं प्रोचुः (śivatattvaṃ paraṃ procuḥ) — they declared the supreme truth of Śivathey declared the supreme truth of Śiva·प्रशंसन्विधिवन्मुदा (praśaṃsanvidhivanmudā) — praising it duly and joyfullypraising it duly and joyfully

अङ्गीकृतं गिरीशेन (aṅgīkṛtaṃ girīśena) — it was accepted by the lord of the mountainit was accepted by the lord of the mountain·तत्तद्बोधनतो मुने (tattadbodhanato mune) — through their several teachings, O sagethrough their several teachings, O sage·यात्रार्थमगमच्छम्भुः (yātrārthamagamacchambhuḥ) — then Śambhu, for the sake of departure, wentthen Śambhu, for the sake of departure, went·शैलेशं सामरादिकः (śaileśaṃ sāmarādikaḥ) — to the mountain-lord, together with the gods and the restto the mountain-lord, together with the gods and the rest

यात्रां कुर्वति देवेशे (yātrāṃ kurvati deveśe) — as the lord of the gods was setting outas the lord of the gods was setting out·स्वशैलं सामरे शिवे (svaśailaṃ sāmare śive) — toward his own mountain, together with the gods, that Śivatoward his own mountain, together with the gods, that Śiva·उच्चैः रुदोद सा मेना (uccaiḥ rudoda sā menā) — that Menā wept aloudthat Menā wept aloud·तमुवाच कृपानिधिम् (tamuvāca kṛpānidhim) — and spoke to him, the treasury of compassionand spoke to him, the treasury of compassion

त्वत्पादाम्बुजभक्ता च (tvatpādāmbujabhaktā ca) — "devoted to your lotus feet"devoted to your lotus feet·मद्वत्सा जन्मजन्मनि (madvatsā janmajanmani) — is my child, birth after birthis my child, birth after birth·स्वप्ने ज्ञाने स्मृतिर्नास्ति (svapne jñāne smṛtirnāsti) — in dream or in waking she has no memoryin dream or in waking she has no memory·महादेवं प्रभुं विना (mahādevaṃ prabhuṃ vinā) — of any lord other than Mahādeva"of any lord other than Mahādeva"

त्वद्भक्तिश्रुतिमात्रेण (tvadbhaktiśrutimātreṇa) — "merely on hearing of devotion to you"merely on hearing of devotion to you·हर्षाश्रुपुलकान्विता (harṣāśrupulakānvitā) — she is filled with tears of joy and horripilationshe is filled with tears of joy and horripilation·त्वन्निन्दया भवेन्मौना (tvannindayā bhavenmaunā) — at censure of you she falls silentat censure of you she falls silent·मृत्युञ्जय मृता इव (mṛtyuñjaya mṛtā iva) — O Conqueror of Death, as though dead"O Conqueror of Death, as though dead"

इत्युक्त्वा मेनका तस्मै (ityuktvā menakā tasmai) — having said this, Menā, to himhaving said this, Menā, to him·समर्प्य स्वसुतां तदा (samarpya svasutāṃ tadā) — having then entrusted her own daughterhaving then entrusted her own daughter·अत्युच्चै रोदनं कृत्वा (atyuccai rodanaṃ kṛtvā) — weeping very loudlyweeping very loudly·मूर्च्छामाप तयोः पुरः (mūrcchāmāpa tayoḥ puraḥ) — fell into a swoon before the two of themfell into a swoon before the two of them

अथ ते निर्जराः सर्वे (atha te nirjarāḥ sarve) — then all those immortalsthen all those immortals·प्रभुणा स्वगणैः सह (prabhuṇā svagaṇaiḥ saha) — together with the Lord and his own hoststogether with the Lord and his own hosts·यात्रां प्रचक्रिरे तूष्णीं (yātrāṃ pracakrire tūṣṇīṃ) — set out on the journey in silenceset out on the journey in silence·गिरिम्प्रति शिवं दधुः (girimprati śivaṃ dadhuḥ) — holding Śiva foremost, toward the mountainholding Śiva foremost, toward the mountain

हिमाचलपुरीबाह्योपवने (himācalapurībāhyopavane) — in a garden outside Himācala's cityin a garden outside Himācala's city·हर्षिताः सुराः सेश्वराः (harṣitāḥ surāḥ seśvarāḥ) — the delighted gods, together with the Lordthe delighted gods, together with the Lord·सोत्सवास्तस्थुः (sotsavāstasthuḥ) — stayed on amid festivitystayed on amid festivity·पर्यैषन्त शिवागमम् (paryaiṣanta śivāgamam) — and awaited the coming [again] of Śivaand awaited the coming [again] of Śiva

इत्युक्ता शिवसद्यात्रा (ityuktā śivasadyātrā) — thus has been told the excellent journey of Śivathus has been told the excellent journey of Śiva·देवैस्सह मुनीश्वर (devaissaha munīśvara) — together with the gods, O lord of sagestogether with the gods, O lord of sages·आकर्णय शिवयात्रां (ākarṇaya śivayātrāṃ) — now hear of Śiva's [further] journeynow hear of Śiva's [further] journey·विरहोत्सवसंयुताम् (virahotsavasaṃyutām) — joined with both separation and festivityjoined with both separation and festivity
