Chapter 52 · The Feeding of the Bridegroom's Party and Śiva's Repose · Verses 1–40

Brahmā continues his narration to Nārada: mindful of the moment, the wise Himavān had the courtyard swept, plastered, and decorated with fragrant substances, then, together with his sons and the other mountains, invited all the gods and their lords to the feast. Hearing the invitation, Śiva, together with Acyuta, went there joyfully with all the gods; Himavān duly honoured them and seated them on fine seats within the house, served them an abundance of excellent food, and with folded hands humbly entreated them to eat. The gods, led by Viṣṇu, ate with Sadāśiva placed foremost, and all the assembled hosts — gathered as one and then formed into separate rows — ate amid much laughter: Nandin, Bhṛṅgī, Vīrabhadra and his hosts; Indra and the guardians of the world; the sages, brāhmaṇas and Bhṛgu and the other ṛṣis; and the hosts of Caṇḍī, delighting in the festivity. Having eaten and rinsed their hands, Viṣṇu and the rest went each to his own dwelling to rest. Meanwhile, by Menā's command, the virtuous women devoutly entreated Śiva and lodged him amid great festivity in the house called 'Vāsa'; seated with joy on the jewelled throne Menā had given, Śambhu beheld the dwelling — ablaze with hundreds of jewelled lamps, filled with jewelled vessels and pearls, adorned with mirrors and white chowries, incomparable and divine, fashioned in every part by Viśvakarmā's craft, radiant with the majesty of Śiva's own boon and bearing the very name 'Śivaloka,' fragrant with sandal and aloe-wood and furnished with a bed of flowers, its many quarters recalling Vaikuṇṭha, Brahmaloka, the cities of the world-guardians, Kailāsa, and Indra's palace, yet surpassed by Śivaloka above them all. Beholding it with wonder, Maheśvara praised the lord of the snowy mountain and, well pleased, lay down at his ease upon a most delightful jewelled couch. Himācala meanwhile fed all his brothers and kin with love and completed the remaining rites; and so, while the mountain-lord thus laboured and the beloved lord slept, the whole night passed and morning came. At daybreak the people, filled with steady enthusiasm, struck up instruments of many kinds; the gods, headed by Viṣṇu, rose with joy, and, remembering their chosen lord, made their mounts ready, eager to depart for Kailāsa, and sent Dharma into Śiva's presence. Dharma came to the dwelling-house at Nārāyaṇa's bidding and spoke fitting words to Śaṅkara, the lord of yogins, urging him to rise and come to the Janavāsa to gladden those waiting there. Hearing this, Maheśvara laughed, looked on Dharma with a glance of kindness, rose from his couch, and, smiling, bade him go ahead, promising to follow quickly. Dharma accordingly went to the Janavāsa, and Śambhu himself was minded to go; learning this, the women came there in festivity and sang auspicious songs at the sight of his feet. Then Śambhu, following worldly custom, performed his morning rites, took leave of Menā and of the mountain-lord, and went to the Janavāsa, where a great festival broke out, O sage, with the sound of Vedic chanting and instruments of the four kinds. Having arrived at his place, Śambhu bowed to the sages, to Hari, and to me, observing worldly custom, and was in turn bowed to by the gods and the rest; cries of "Victory" and "Homage" rose up together with the auspicious sound of the Vedas, and a great and joyous uproar filled that place.
