गृहीत्वा पार्वतीं (gṛhītvā pārvatīṃ) — by taking Pārvatīby taking Pārvatī·प्राप्तं सौभाग्यमतिदुर्लभम् (prāptaṃ saubhāgyamatidurlabham) — you have obtained a good fortune most hard to attainyou have obtained a good fortune most hard to attain·किमर्थं प्राणनाथो मे (kimarthaṃ prāṇanātho me) — why then, the lord of my lifewhy then, the lord of my life·निस्स्वार्थं भस्मसात्कृतः (nissvārthaṃ bhasmasātkṛtaḥ) — without any gain [to yourself], reduced to asheswithout any gain [to yourself], reduced to ashes

जीवय अत्र पतिं मे हि (jīvaya atra patiṃ me hi) — revive here my husbandrevive here my husband·कामव्यापारमात्मनि (kāmavyāpāramātmani) — [and] the working of desire in yourself[and] the working of desire in yourself·कुरु दूरं च सन्तापं (kuru dūraṃ ca santāpaṃ) — and drive far away the anguishand drive far away the anguish·समविश्लेषहेतुकम् (samaviśleṣahetukam) — whose cause is [this] parting that has struck us both alikewhose cause is [this] parting that has struck us both alike

विवाहोत्सव एतस्मिन् (vivāhotsava etasmin) — in this wedding-festivalin this wedding-festival·सुखिनो निखिला जनाः (sukhino nikhilā janāḥ) — all people are joyfulall people are joyful·अहमेका महेशान (ahamekā maheśāna) — I alone, O great lordI alone, O great lord·दुःखिनी स्वपतिं विना (duḥkhinī svapatiṃ vinā) — am sorrowful, without my own husbandam sorrowful, without my own husband

सनाथां कुरु मां देव (sanāthāṃ kuru māṃ deva) — make me one with a protector, O godmake me one with a protector, O god·प्रसन्नो भव शङ्कर (prasanno bhava śaṅkara) — be pleased, O Śaṅkarabe pleased, O Śaṅkara·स्वोक्तं सत्यं विधेहि त्वं (svoktaṃ satyaṃ vidhehi tvaṃ) — make your own word truemake your own word true·दीनबन्धो पर प्रभो (dīnabandho para prabho) — O friend of the lowly, O supreme lordO friend of the lowly, O supreme lord

त्वां विना कः समर्थोऽत्र (tvāṃ vinā kaḥ samartho'tra) — without you, who here is ablewithout you, who here is able·त्रैलोक्ये सचराचरे (trailokye sacarācare) — in this triple world with its moving and unmoving beingsin this triple world with its moving and unmoving beings·नाशने मम दुःखस्य (nāśane mama duḥkhasya) — in the destroying of my sorrowin the destroying of my sorrow·ज्ञात्वेति करुणां कुरु (jñātveti karuṇāṃ kuru) — knowing this, show compassionknowing this, show compassion

सोत्सवे स्वविवाहे अस्मिन् (sotsave svavivāhe asmin) — in this festive wedding of your ownin this festive wedding of your own·सर्वानन्दप्रदायिनि (sarvānandapradāyini) — which gives joy to allwhich gives joy to all·सोत्सवाम् अपि मां नाथ (sotsavām api māṃ nātha) — me too, [make] festive, O lordme too, [make] festive, O lord·कुरु दीनकृपाकर (kuru dīnakṛpākara) — O merciful one to the lowlyO merciful one to the lowly

जीविते मम नाथे हि (jīvite mama nāthe hi) — when my lord is alivewhen my lord is alive·पार्वत्या प्रियया सह (pārvatyā priyayā saha) — together with your beloved Pārvatītogether with your beloved Pārvatī·सुविहारः प्रपूर्णश्च (suvihāraḥ prapūrṇaśca) — [your] delightful sport will be utterly complete[your] delightful sport will be utterly complete·भविष्यति न संशयः (bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ) — there is no doubt of thisthere is no doubt of this

सर्वं कर्तुं समर्थोऽसि (sarvaṃ kartuṃ samartho'si) — you are able to do everythingyou are able to do everything·यतस्त्वं परमेश्वरः (yatastvaṃ parameśvaraḥ) — since you are the supreme lordsince you are the supreme lord·किं बहूक्त्यात्र सर्वेश (kiṃ bahūktyātra sarveśa) — what use is much speech here, O lord of allwhat use is much speech here, O lord of all·जीवयाशु पतिं मम (jīvayāśu patiṃ mama) — swiftly revive my husbandswiftly revive my husband

तदित्युक्त्वा कामभस्म (tadityuktvā kāmabhasma) — having said this, [she offered] Kāma's asheshaving said this, [she offered] Kāma's ashes·ददौ सग्रन्थिबन्धनम् (dadau sagranthibandhanam) — she gave, tied up in a knot [of cloth]she gave, tied up in a knot [of cloth]·रुरोद पुरतः शम्भोः (ruroda purataḥ śambhoḥ) — she wept before Śambhushe wept before Śambhu·नाथ नाथेत्युदीर्य च (nātha nāthetyudīrya ca) — and crying out, "O lord! O lord!"and crying out, "O lord! O lord!"

रतिरोदनमाकर्ण्य (ratirodanamākarṇya) — hearing Rati's weepinghearing Rati's weeping·सरस्वत्यादयः स्त्रियः (sarasvatyādayaḥ striyaḥ) — the women headed by Sarasvatīthe women headed by Sarasvatī·रुरुदुः सकला देव्यः (ruruduḥ sakalā devyaḥ) — all the goddesses weptall the goddesses wept·प्रोचुर्दीनतरं वचः (procurdīnataraṃ vacaḥ) — and spoke most piteous wordsand spoke most piteous words

भक्तवत्सलनामा त्वं (bhaktavatsalanāmā tvaṃ) — you bear the name 'tender to your devotees'you bear the name 'tender to your devotees'·दीनबन्धुर्दयानिधिः (dīnabandhurdayānidhiḥ) — friend of the lowly, treasury of mercyfriend of the lowly, treasury of mercy·कामं जीवय सोत्साहां (kāmaṃ jīvaya sotsāhāṃ) — revive Kāma, and full of zealrevive Kāma, and full of zeal·रतिं कुरु नमोऽस्तु ते (ratiṃ kuru namo'stu te) — make Rati [again] — homage to youmake Rati [again] — homage to you

इति तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा (iti tadvacanaṃ śrutvā) — hearing this speechhearing this speech·प्रसन्नोऽभून्महेश्वरः (prasanno'bhūnmaheśvaraḥ) — Maheśvara became pleasedMaheśvara became pleased·कृपादृष्टिं चकाराशु (kṛpādṛṣṭiṃ cakārāśu) — he swiftly cast a glance of mercyhe swiftly cast a glance of mercy·करुणासागरः प्रभुः (karuṇāsāgaraḥ prabhuḥ) — the lord, an ocean of compassionthe lord, an ocean of compassion

सुधादृष्ट्या शूलभृतो (sudhādṛṣṭyā śūlabhṛto) — by the nectar-like glance of the trident-bearerby the nectar-like glance of the trident-bearer·भस्मतो निर्गतः स्मरः (bhasmato nirgataḥ smaraḥ) — Smara emerged from the ashesSmara emerged from the ashes·तद्रूपवेषचिह्नात्मा (tadrūpaveṣacihnātmā) — of that same form, guise and marksof that same form, guise and marks·सुन्दरोऽद्भुतमूर्तिमान् (sundaro'dbhutamūrtimān) — beautiful, of wondrous bodybeautiful, of wondrous body

तद्रूपं च तदाकारं (tadrūpaṃ ca tadākāraṃ) — of that same form and that same shapeof that same form and that same shape·सस्मितं सधनुश्शरम् (sasmitaṃ sadhanuśśaram) — smiling, with bow and arrowsmiling, with bow and arrow·दृष्ट्वा पतिं रतिस्तं च (dṛṣṭvā patiṃ ratistaṃ ca) — seeing her husband, Rati [bowed] to himseeing her husband, Rati [bowed] to him·प्रणनाम महेश्वरम् (praṇanāma maheśvaram) — and bowed down to Maheśvaraand bowed down to Maheśvara

कृतार्था अभूत् शिवं देवं (kṛtārthā abhūt śivaṃ devaṃ) — she became fulfilled, [and praised] the god Śivashe became fulfilled, [and praised] the god Śiva·तुष्टाव च कृताञ्जलिः (tuṣṭāva ca kṛtāñjaliḥ) — and praised him with folded handsand praised him with folded hands·प्राणनाथप्रदं पत्या (prāṇanāthapradaṃ patyā) — who had given [back] the lord of her life, together with her husbandwho had given [back] the lord of her life, together with her husband·जीवितेन पुनः पुनः (jīvitena punaḥ punaḥ) — now living, again and againnow living, again and again

कामस्य स्तुतिमाकर्ण्य (kāmasya stutimākarṇya) — hearing Kāma's praisehearing Kāma's praise·सनारीकस्य शङ्करः (sanārīkasya śaṅkaraḥ) — together with his wife — Śaṅkaratogether with his wife — Śaṅkara·प्रसन्नोऽभवदत्यन्तम् (prasanno'bhavadatyantam) — became exceedingly pleasedbecame exceedingly pleased·उवाच करुणार्द्रधीः (uvāca karuṇārdradhīḥ) — and, his mind melted with compassion, spokeand, his mind melted with compassion, spoke

प्रसन्नोऽहं तव स्तुत्या (prasanno'haṃ tava stutyā) — I am pleased by your praiseI am pleased by your praise·सनारीकस्य चित्तज (sanārīkasya cittaja) — offered together with your wife, O mind-born oneoffered together with your wife, O mind-born one·स्वयंभव वरं ब्रूहि (svayaṃbhava varaṃ brūhi) — O self-born, name your boonO self-born, name your boon·वाञ्छितं तद् ददामि ते (vāñchitaṃ tad dadāmi te) — whatever you desire, that I grant to youwhatever you desire, that I grant to you

इति शम्भुवचः श्रुत्वा (iti śambhuvacaḥ śrutvā) — hearing these words of Śambhuhearing these words of Śambhu·महानन्दः स्मरस्तदा (mahānandaḥ smarastadā) — Smara, then greatly delightedSmara, then greatly delighted·उवाच साञ्जलिर्नम्रो (uvāca sāñjalirnamro) — spoke, with folded hands, bowed lowspoke, with folded hands, bowed low·गद्गदाक्षरया गिरा (gadgadākṣarayā girā) — in a voice choked with emotionin a voice choked with emotion

देवदेव महादेव (devadeva mahādeva) — O god of gods, O great godO god of gods, O great god·करुणासागर प्रभो (karuṇāsāgara prabho) — O ocean of compassion, O lordO ocean of compassion, O lord·यदि प्रसन्नः सर्वेश (yadi prasannaḥ sarveśa) — if you are pleased, O lord of allif you are pleased, O lord of all·ममानन्दकरो भव (mamānandakaro bhava) — be the giver of my joybe the giver of my joy

क्षमस्व मेऽपराधं हि (kṣamasva me'parādhaṃ hi) — forgive my offenceforgive my offence·यत्कृतश्च पुरा प्रभो (yatkṛtaśca purā prabho) — which was committed before, O lordwhich was committed before, O lord·स्वजनेषु परां प्रीतिं (svajaneṣu parāṃ prītiṃ) — supreme love toward your own peoplesupreme love toward your own people·भक्तिं देहि स्वपादयोः (bhaktiṃ dehi svapādayoḥ) — and devotion at your own feet — grant [these]and devotion at your own feet — grant [these]

इत्याकर्ण्य स्मरवचः (ityākarṇya smaravacaḥ) — hearing Smara's wordshearing Smara's words·प्रसन्नः परमेश्वरः (prasannaḥ parameśvaraḥ) — the supreme lord, pleasedthe supreme lord, pleased·ओमित्युक्त्वाब्रवीत्तं वै (omityuktvābravīttaṃ vai) — having said "Om, so be it," spoke to himhaving said "Om, so be it," spoke to him·विहसन्करुणानिधिः (vihasankaruṇānidhiḥ) — the ocean of mercy, smilingthe ocean of mercy, smiling

हे कामाहं प्रसन्नोऽस्मि (he kāmāhaṃ prasanno'smi) — O Kāma, I am pleasedO Kāma, I am pleased·भयं त्यज महामते (bhayaṃ tyaja mahāmate) — abandon fear, O great-minded oneabandon fear, O great-minded one·गच्छ विष्णुसमीपं च (gaccha viṣṇusamīpaṃ ca) — go to the presence of Viṣṇugo to the presence of Viṣṇu·बहिःस्थाने स्थितो भव (bahiḥsthāne sthito bhava) — and remain stationed outsideand remain stationed outside

तच्छ्रुत्वा शिरसा नत्वा (tacchrutvā śirasā natvā) — hearing this, bowing his headhearing this, bowing his head·परिक्रम्य स्तुवन्विभुम् (parikramya stuvanvibhum) — circling round the lord, praising himcircling round the lord, praising him·बहिर्गत्वा हरिं देवान् (bahirgatvā hariṃ devān) — going outside, [and saluting] Hari and the godsgoing outside, [and saluting] Hari and the gods·प्रणम्य समुपास्त सः (praṇamya samupāsta saḥ) — having bowed, he waited upon themhaving bowed, he waited upon them

कामं सम्भाष्य देवाश्च (kāmaṃ sambhāṣya devāśca) — the gods, conversing with Kāmathe gods, conversing with Kāma·ददुस्तस्मै शुभाशिषम् (dadustasmai śubhāśiṣam) — gave him their auspicious blessinggave him their auspicious blessing·विष्णवादयः प्रसन्नास्ते (viṣṇavādayaḥ prasannāste) — Viṣṇu and the rest, pleased,Viṣṇu and the rest, pleased,·प्रोचुः स्मृत्वा शिवं हृदि (procuḥ smṛtvā śivaṃ hṛdi) — spoke, having called Śiva to mind in their heartsspoke, having called Śiva to mind in their hearts

धन्यस्त्वं स्मर सन्दग्धः (dhanyastvaṃ smara sandagdhaḥ) — blessed are you, O Smara, though burntblessed are you, O Smara, though burnt·शिवेनानुग्रहीकृतः (śivenānugrahīkṛtaḥ) — made an object of grace by Śivamade an object of grace by Śiva·जीवयामास (jīvayāmāsa) — he revived [you]he revived [you]·सत्त्वांशकृपादृष्ट्याखिलेश्वरः (sattvāṃśakṛpādṛṣṭyākhileśvaraḥ) — the lord of all, by a compassionate glance [born] of a portion of his own beingthe lord of all, by a compassionate glance [born] of a portion of his own being

सुखदुःखदो न चान्योऽस्ति (sukhaduḥkhado na cānyo'sti) — there is no other giver of joy and sorrowthere is no other giver of joy and sorrow·यतः स्वकृतभुक् पुमान् (yataḥ svakṛtabhuk pumān) — since a man reaps [only] what he himself has donesince a man reaps [only] what he himself has done·काले रक्षा विवाहश्च (kāle rakṣā vivāhaśca) — protection and marriage, in their [own] time,protection and marriage, in their [own] time,·निषेकः केन वार्यते (niṣekaḥ kena vāryate) — and conception — by whom can they be preventedand conception — by whom can they be prevented

इत्युक्त्वा ते च सम्मान्य (ityuktvā te ca sammānya) — having said this, and having honouredhaving said this, and having honoured·तं सुखेनामरास्तदा (taṃ sukhenāmarāstadā) — him, those immortals then, at ease,him, those immortals then, at ease,·सन्तस्थुस्तत्र विश्वाद्याः (santasthustatra viśvādyāḥ) — remained there — the Viśvedevas and the restremained there — the Viśvedevas and the rest·सर्वे लब्धमनोरथाः (sarve labdhamanorathāḥ) — all with their desires fulfilledall with their desires fulfilled

सोऽपि प्रमुदितस्तत्र (so'pi pramuditastatra) — he too, greatly delighted, therehe too, greatly delighted, there·समुवास शिवाज्ञया (samuvāsa śivājñayā) — dwelt, by Śiva's commanddwelt, by Śiva's command·जयशब्दो नमःशब्दः (jayaśabdo namaḥśabdaḥ) — the cry of 'victory', the cry of 'homage',the cry of 'victory', the cry of 'homage',·साधुशब्दो बभूव ह (sādhuśabdo babhūva ha) — and the cry of 'well done' aroseand the cry of 'well done' arose

ततः शम्भुर्वासगेहे (tataḥ śambhurvāsagehe) — then Śambhu, in his dwelling-house,then Śambhu, in his dwelling-house,·वामे संस्थाप्य पार्वतीम् (vāme saṃsthāpya pārvatīm) — having seated Pārvatī on his left,having seated Pārvatī on his left,·मिष्टान्नं भोजयामास (miṣṭānnaṃ bhojayāmāsa) — fed her sweet food,fed her sweet food,·तं च सा च मुदान्विता (taṃ ca sā ca mudānvitā) — and she, delighted, fed him in turnand she, delighted, fed him in turn

अथ शम्भुर्भवाचारी (atha śambhurbhavācārī) — then Śambhu, following worldly custom,then Śambhu, following worldly custom,·तत्र कृत्यं विधाय तत् (tatra kṛtyaṃ vidhāya tat) — having there performed that rite,having there performed that rite,·मेनामामन्त्र्य शैलं च (menāmāmantrya śailaṃ ca) — having taken leave of Menā and the mountain-lord,having taken leave of Menā and the mountain-lord,·जनवासं जगाम सः (janavāsaṃ jagāma saḥ) — went to the guest-lodgingwent to the guest-lodging

महोत्सवस्तदा चासीद् (mahotsavastadā cāsīd) — then there was a great festivalthen there was a great festival·वेदध्वनिरभून्मुने (vedadhvanirabhūnmune) — and the sound of the Veda arose, O sageand the sound of the Veda arose, O sage·वाद्यानि वादयामासुः (vādyāni vādayāmāsuḥ) — instruments were playedinstruments were played·जनाश्चतुर्विधानि च (janāścaturvidhāni ca) — by the people, of the four kindsby the people, of the four kinds

शम्भुरागत्य स्वस्थानं (śambhurāgatya svasthānaṃ) — Śambhu, having come to his own place,Śambhu, having come to his own place,·ववन्दे च मुनींस्तदा (vavande ca munīṃstadā) — then bowed to the sages,then bowed to the sages,·हरिं च मां भवाचारात् (hariṃ ca māṃ bhavācārāt) — and to Hari and to me — and, by worldly custom,and to Hari and to me — and, by worldly custom,·वन्दितोऽभूत्सुरादिभिः (vandito'bhūtsurādibhiḥ) — he in turn was honoured by the gods and the resthe in turn was honoured by the gods and the rest

जयशब्दो बभूवाथ (jayaśabdo babhūvātha) — then arose the cry of 'victory'then arose the cry of 'victory'·नमश्शब्दस्तथैव च (namaśśabdastathaiva ca) — and likewise the cry of 'homage'and likewise the cry of 'homage'·वेदध्वनिश्च शुभदः (vedadhvaniśca śubhadaḥ) — and the auspicious sound of the Vedaand the auspicious sound of the Veda·सर्वविघ्नविदारणः (sarvavighnavidāraṇaḥ) — that tears apart every obstaclethat tears apart every obstacle

अथ विष्णुरहं शक्रः (atha viṣṇurahaṃ śakraḥ) — then Viṣṇu, I [Brahmā], Śakra,then Viṣṇu, I [Brahmā], Śakra,·सर्वे देवाश्च सर्षयः (sarve devāśca sarṣayaḥ) — all the gods, together with the sages,all the gods, together with the sages,·सिद्धा उपसुरा नागाः (siddhā upasurā nāgāḥ) — the siddhas, the demigods, the nāgas —the siddhas, the demigods, the nāgas —·तुष्टुवुस्ते पृथक्पृथक् (tuṣṭuvuste pṛthakpṛthak) — they praised him, each separatelythey praised him, each separately

विश्ववाद्यास्तेऽखिलास्तात (viśvavādyāste'khilāstāta) — those Viśvedevas and all the rest, O father,those Viśvedevas and all the rest, O father,·प्राप्याज्ञां परमेशितुः (prāpyājñāṃ parameśituḥ) — having received the command of the supreme lord,having received the command of the supreme lord,·अतिहृष्टाः प्रसन्नास्याः (atihṛṣṭāḥ prasannāsyāḥ) — greatly delighted, their faces joyful,greatly delighted, their faces joyful,·स्वस्थानं जग्मुरादृताः (svasthānaṃ jagmurādṛtāḥ) — went, honoured, to their own abodeswent, honoured, to their own abodes
