शिवाशिरसि सिन्दूरं (śivāśirasi sindūraṃ) — vermilion, on the head/parting of Śivāvermilion, on the head/parting of Śivā·ददौ शम्भुर्द्विजाज्ञया (dadau śambhurdvijājñayā) — Śambhu applied, at the brāhmaṇas' biddingŚambhu applied, at the brāhmaṇas' bidding·तदानीं गिरिजाभिख्या (tadānīṃ girijābhikhyā) — then, [she] under the name Girijāthen, [she] under the name Girijā·अद्भुतावर्ण्या बभूव ह (adbhutāvarṇyā babhūva ha) — became indeed of wondrous, indescribable [beauty]became indeed of wondrous, indescribable [beauty]

ततो विप्राज्ञया तौ (tato viprājñayā tau) — then, by the brāhmaṇas' bidding, those twothen, by the brāhmaṇas' bidding, those two·द्वावेकासनसमास्थितौ (dvāvekāsanasamāsthitau) — the pair, seated together upon one seatthe pair, seated together upon one seat·लेभाते परमां शोभां (lebhāte paramāṃ śobhāṃ) — attained supreme beautyattained supreme beauty·भक्तचित्तमुदावहाम् (bhaktacittamudāvahām) — bringing joy to the hearts of devoteesbringing joy to the hearts of devotees

ततः स्वस्थानमागत्य (tataḥ svasthānamāgatya) — then, having come to their own placethen, having come to their own place·संस्रवप्राशनं मुदा (saṃsravaprāśanaṃ mudā) — the drinking of the saṃsrava, joyfullythe drinking of the saṃsrava, joyfully·चक्रतुस्तौ निदेशान्मे (cakratustau nideśānme) — the two of them performed, at my directionthe two of them performed, at my direction·अद्भुतलीलाकरौ मुने (adbhutalīlākarau mune) — O sage, [those two] whose sport is wondrousO sage, [those two] whose sport is wondrous

गोदानं विधिवच्छम्भुः (godānaṃ vidhivacchambhuḥ) — the gift of a cow, duly — Śambhuthe gift of a cow, duly — Śambhu·आचार्याय ददौ ततः (ācāryāya dadau tataḥ) — then gave to the preceptorthen gave to the preceptor·महादानानि च प्रीत्या (mahādānāni ca prītyā) — and the great gifts, with loveand the great gifts, with love·यानि मङ्गलदानि वै (yāni maṅgaladāni vai) — whatever are indeed auspicious giftswhatever are indeed auspicious gifts

ततः शतसुवर्णं च (tataḥ śatasuvarṇaṃ ca) — then a hundred gold [coins] eachthen a hundred gold [coins] each·विप्रेभ्यः स ददौ पृथक् (viprebhyaḥ sa dadau pṛthak) — he gave separately to the brāhmaṇashe gave separately to the brāhmaṇas·बहुभ्यो रत्नकोटीश्च (bahubhyo ratnakoṭīśca) — and to many, tens of millions of jewelsand to many, tens of millions of jewels·नानाद्रव्याण्यनेकशः (nānādravyāṇyanekaśaḥ) — and various goods, in many kindsand various goods, in many kinds

तदानीममराः सर्वे (tadānīmamarāḥ sarve) — then all the immortalsthen all the immortals·परे जीवाश्चराचराः (pare jīvāścarācarāḥ) — and the other living beings, moving and unmovingand the other living beings, moving and unmoving·मुमुदुश्चेतसातीव (mumuduścetasātīva) — rejoiced exceedingly in heartrejoiced exceedingly in heart·बभूवाति जयध्वनिः (babhūvāti jayadhvaniḥ) — and there arose an exceeding cry of victoryand there arose an exceeding cry of victory

मङ्गलध्वनिगानं च (maṅgaladhvanigānaṃ ca) — and auspicious singing and soundand auspicious singing and sound·बभूव बहु सर्वतः (babhūva bahu sarvataḥ) — arose abundantly on every sidearose abundantly on every side·वाद्यध्वनिरभूद्रम्यो (vādyadhvanirabhūdramyo) — a delightful sound of instruments arosea delightful sound of instruments arose·सर्वानन्दप्रवर्धनः (sarvānandapravardhanaḥ) — increasing the joy of allincreasing the joy of all

हरिर्मयाथ देवाश्च (harirmayātha devāśca) — then Hari, I [Brahmā], and the godsthen Hari, I [Brahmā], and the gods·मुनयश्चापरेऽखिलाः (munayaścāpare'khilāḥ) — and the sages, and all the othersand the sages, and all the others·गिरिमामन्त्र्य सुप्रीत्या (girimāmantrya suprītyā) — having taken leave of the mountain-lord, with great affectionhaving taken leave of the mountain-lord, with great affection·स्वस्थानं प्रययुर्द्रुतम् (svasthānaṃ prayayurdrutam) — went swiftly to their own abodeswent swiftly to their own abodes

तदानीं शैलनगरे (tadānīṃ śailanagare) — then, in the city of the mountain-lordthen, in the city of the mountain-lord·स्त्रियश्च मुदिता वरम् (striyaśca muditā varam) — the women, joyfully, [leading] the excellent [couple]the women, joyfully, [leading] the excellent [couple]·शिवाशिवौ समानीय (śivāśivau samānīya) — bringing together Śivā and Śivabringing together Śivā and Śiva·ययुः कुहवरालयम् (yayuḥ kuhavarālayam) — went to the [nuptial] chamberwent to the [nuptial] chamber

लौकिकाचारमाजह्रुः (laukikācāramājahruḥ) — performed the customary folk-ritesperformed the customary folk-rites·ता स्त्रियस्तत्र चादृताः (tā striyastatra cādṛtāḥ) — those women there, with reverencethose women there, with reverence·महोत्साहो बभूवाथ (mahotsāho babhūvātha) — then a great enthusiasm arosethen a great enthusiasm arose·सर्वतः प्रमुदावहः (sarvataḥ pramudāvahaḥ) — bringing joy on every sidebringing joy on every side

अथ तास्तौ समानीय (atha tāstau samānīya) — then, bringing that pairthen, bringing that pair·दम्पती जनशंकरौ (dampatī janaśaṃkarau) — the couple, bringers of welfare to the peoplethe couple, bringers of welfare to the people·वासालयं महादिव्यं (vāsālayaṃ mahādivyaṃ) — to a great and divine dwelling-chamberto a great and divine dwelling-chamber·भवाचारं व्यधुर्मुदा (bhavācāraṃ vyadhurmudā) — they performed the customary rite of Bhava, with joythey performed the customary rite of Bhava, with joy

अथो समीपमागत्य (atho samīpamāgatya) — then, having come nearthen, having come near·शैलेन्द्रनगरस्त्रियः (śailendranagarastriyaḥ) — the women of the mountain-lord's citythe women of the mountain-lord's city·निवृत्य मङ्गलं कर्म (nivṛtya maṅgalaṃ karma) — having performed the auspicious ritehaving performed the auspicious rite·प्रापयन्दम्पती गृहम् (prāpayandampatī gṛham) — brought the couple to the housebrought the couple to the house

कृत्वा जयध्वनिं (kṛtvā jayadhvaniṃ) — having raised a cry of victoryhaving raised a cry of victory·चक्रुर्ग्रन्थिनिर्मोचनादिकम् (cakrurgranthinirmocanādikam) — they performed the untying of the [nuptial] knot and the restthey performed the untying of the [nuptial] knot and the rest·सस्मितास्सकटाक्षाश्च (sasmitāssakaṭākṣāśca) — smiling gently, with sidelong glancessmiling gently, with sidelong glances·पुलकाञ्चितविग्रहाः (pulakāñcitavigrahāḥ) — their bodies thrilled with horripilationtheir bodies thrilled with horripilation

वासगेहं सम्प्रविश्य (vāsagehaṃ sampraviśya) — entering the dwelling-chamberentering the dwelling-chamber·मुमुहुः कामिनीवराः (mumuhuḥ kāminīvarāḥ) — those excellent women became enrapturedthose excellent women became enraptured·प्रशंसन्त्यः स्वभाग्यानि (praśaṃsantyaḥ svabhāgyāni) — praising their own good fortunepraising their own good fortune·पश्यन्त्यः परमेश्वरम् (paśyantyaḥ parameśvaram) — [as they were] beholding the supreme lord[as they were] beholding the supreme lord

महासुरूपवेषं च (mahāsurūpaveṣaṃ ca) — [him] of very beautiful form and attire[him] of very beautiful form and attire·सर्वलावण्यसंयुतम् (sarvalāvaṇyasaṃyutam) — endowed with every graceendowed with every grace·नवीनयौवनस्थं च (navīnayauvanasthaṃ ca) — and standing in fresh youthand standing in fresh youth·कामनीचित्तमोहनम् (kāmanīcittamohanam) — beguiling the minds of desiring womenbeguiling the minds of desiring women

ईषद्धास्यप्रसन्नास्यं (īṣaddhāsyaprasannāsyaṃ) — with a face pleasant with a faint smilewith a face pleasant with a faint smile·सकटाक्षं सुसुन्दरम् (sakaṭākṣaṃ susundaram) — with sidelong glances, most beautifulwith sidelong glances, most beautiful·सुसूक्ष्मवासो बिभ्राणं (susūkṣmavāso bibhrāṇaṃ) — wearing very fine garmentswearing very fine garments·नानारत्नविभूषितम् (nānāratnavibhūṣitam) — adorned with many kinds of jewelsadorned with many kinds of jewels

सरस्वती च लक्ष्मीश्च (sarasvatī ca lakṣmīśca) — Sarasvatī and LakṣmīSarasvatī and Lakṣmī·सावित्री जाह्नवी तथा (sāvitrī jāhnavī tathā) — Sāvitrī and likewise JāhnavīSāvitrī and likewise Jāhnavī·अदितिश्च शची चैव (aditiśca śacī caiva) — Aditi and Śacī tooAditi and Śacī too·लोपामुद्राप्यरुन्धती (lopāmudrāpyarundhatī) — and Lopāmudrā, and Arundhatīand Lopāmudrā, and Arundhatī

अहल्या तुलसी स्वाहा (ahalyā tulasī svāhā) — Ahalyā, Tulasī, SvāhāAhalyā, Tulasī, Svāhā·रोहिणी च वसुन्धरा (rohiṇī ca vasundharā) — Rohiṇī, and VasundharāRohiṇī, and Vasundharā·शतरूपा च संज्ञा च (śatarūpā ca saṃjñā ca) — Śatarūpā, and SaṃjñāŚatarūpā, and Saṃjñā·रतिरेताः सुरस्त्रियः (ratiretāḥ surastriyaḥ) — and Rati — these were the goddessesand Rati — these were the goddesses

देवकन्या नागकन्या (devakanyā nāgakanyā) — the daughters of gods, the daughters of nāgasthe daughters of gods, the daughters of nāgas·मुनिकन्या मनोहराः (munikanyā manoharāḥ) — the daughters of sages, all enchantingthe daughters of sages, all enchanting·तत्र या याः स्थितास्तासां (tatra yā yāḥ sthitāstāsāṃ) — whoever else stood there — of themwhoever else stood there — of them·सङ्ख्यां कर्तुं च कः क्षमः (saṅkhyāṃ kartuṃ ca kaḥ kṣamaḥ) — who indeed is able to make a countwho indeed is able to make a count

ताभी रत्नासने दत्ते (tābhī ratnāsane datte) — on a jewelled seat given by themon a jewelled seat given by them·तत्रोवास शिवो मुदा (tatrovāsa śivo mudā) — Śiva sat there joyfullyŚiva sat there joyfully·तमूचुः क्रमतो देव्यः (tamūcuḥ kramato devyaḥ) — the goddesses spoke to him in turnthe goddesses spoke to him in turn·सुहासं मधुरं वचः (suhāsaṃ madhuraṃ vacaḥ) — sweet words with gentle laughtersweet words with gentle laughter

प्राप्ता सती महादेव (prāptā satī mahādeva) — O Mahādeva, [your] Satī has been regainedO Mahādeva, [your] Satī has been regained·अधुना प्राणाधिका मुदा (adhunā prāṇādhikā mudā) — now, dearer than life, joyfullynow, dearer than life, joyfully·दृष्ट्वा प्रियास्यं चन्द्राभं (dṛṣṭvā priyāsyaṃ candrābhaṃ) — seeing the moon-bright face of your belovedseeing the moon-bright face of your beloved·सन्तापं त्यज कामुक (santāpaṃ tyaja kāmuka) — abandon your sorrow, O loverabandon your sorrow, O lover

कालं गमय कालेश (kālaṃ gamaya kāleśa) — O lord of time, pass your timeO lord of time, pass your time·सतीसंश्लेषपूर्वकम् (satīsaṃśleṣapūrvakam) — preceded by union with Satīpreceded by union with Satī·विश्लेषस्ते न भविता (viśleṣaste na bhavitā) — there shall be no separation for youthere shall be no separation for you·सर्वकालं समाश्रिता (sarvakālaṃ samāśritā) — [she who is] devoted [to you] for all time[she who is] devoted [to you] for all time

लज्जां विहाय देवेश (lajjāṃ vihāya deveśa) — O lord of gods, casting off shameO lord of gods, casting off shame·सतीं कृत्वा स्ववक्षसि (satīṃ kṛtvā svavakṣasi) — take Satī upon your own breasttake Satī upon your own breast·तिष्ठ तां प्रति का लज्जा (tiṣṭha tāṃ prati kā lajjā) — remain so — what shame is there toward herremain so — what shame is there toward her·प्राणा यान्ति यया विना (prāṇā yānti yayā vinā) — without whom your very life-breaths were departingwithout whom your very life-breaths were departing

भोजयित्वा सतीं शम्भो (bhojayitvā satīṃ śambho) — O Śambhu, having fed SatīO Śambhu, having fed Satī·शीघ्रं त्वं भुङ्क्ष्व मा खिदः (śīghraṃ tvaṃ bhuṅkṣva mā khidaḥ) — eat quickly yourself, be not distressedeat quickly yourself, be not distressed·तदाचम्य सकर्पूरं (tadācamya sakarpūraṃ) — then, having rinsed your mouth, [give her] camphoredthen, having rinsed your mouth, [give her] camphored·ताम्बूलं देहि सादरम् (tāmbūlaṃ dehi sādaram) — give the betel respectfullygive the betel respectfully

स्वर्णकांतिकरां धृत्वा (svarṇakāṃtikarāṃ dhṛtvā) — taking hold [of the tresses] that bring golden radiancetaking hold [of the tresses] that bring golden radiance·केशान्मार्जय योषितः (keśānmārjaya yoṣitaḥ) — arrange the hair of this womanarrange the hair of this woman·कामिन्याः स्वामिसौभाग्यसुखं (kāminyāḥ svāmisaubhāgyasukhaṃ) — the joy of good fortune from her husband, for a loving womanthe joy of good fortune from her husband, for a loving woman·नातः परं भवेत् (nātaḥ paraṃ bhavet) — there is none greater than thisthere is none greater than this

भोजनान्ते शिवे शम्भुं (bhojanānte śive śambhuṃ) — O Śivā, after the meal, to ŚambhuO Śivā, after the meal, to Śambhu·मुखशुद्ध्यर्थमादरात् (mukhaśuddhyarthamādarāt) — respectfully, for the sake of cleansing his mouthrespectfully, for the sake of cleansing his mouth·जलं देहि महाप्रीत्या (jalaṃ dehi mahāprītyā) — give water, with great lovegive water, with great love·दम्पतिप्रेम दुर्लभम् (dampatiprema durlabham) — the love between husband and wife is rarethe love between husband and wife is rare

कृत्वा विलापं यद्धेतोः (kṛtvā vilāpaṃ yaddhetoḥ) — for whose sake, having lamentedfor whose sake, having lamented·शिवां कृत्वा च वक्षसि (śivāṃ kṛtvā ca vakṣasi) — and having placed Śivā upon your breastand having placed Śivā upon your breast·यो बभ्रामानिशं मोहात् (yo babhrāmāniśaṃ mohāt) — [you] who wandered ceaselessly, out of delusion[you] who wandered ceaselessly, out of delusion·का लज्जा ते प्रियां प्रति (kā lajjā te priyāṃ prati) — what shame have you toward your belovedwhat shame have you toward your beloved

व्यवहारोऽस्ति च स्त्रीणां (vyavahāro'sti ca strīṇāṃ) — it is indeed the custom of womenit is indeed the custom of women·भुक्त्वा वासगृहे शिव (bhuktvā vāsagṛhe śiva) — O Śiva, [to go] to the bedchamber after eatingO Śiva, [to go] to the bedchamber after eating·दत्त्वा शिवायै ताम्बूलं (dattvā śivāyai tāmbūlaṃ) — having given betel to Śivāhaving given betel to Śivā·शयनं कर्तुमर्हसि (śayanaṃ kartumarhasi) — you ought to go to restyou ought to go to rest

मया दत्तां सतीं (mayā dattāṃ satīṃ) — Satī, given [only after persuasion] by meSatī, given [only after persuasion] by me·मेना तुभ्यं दातुमनीप्सिता (menā tubhyaṃ dātumanīpsitā) — Menā was [at first] unwilling to give her to youMenā was [at first] unwilling to give her to you·विविधं बोधयित्वेमां (vividhaṃ bodhayitvemāṃ) — having instructed her in various wayshaving instructed her in various ways·सुरतिं कर्तुमर्हसि (suratiṃ kartumarhasi) — you ought to show her great affectionyou ought to show her great affection

वृद्धावस्थां परित्यज्य (vṛddhāvasthāṃ parityajya) — abandoning your aged appearanceabandoning your aged appearance·ह्यतीव तरुणो भव (hyatīva taruṇo bhava) — become indeed exceedingly youthfulbecome indeed exceedingly youthful·येन मेनानुमन्येत (yena menānumanyeta) — so that Menā may fully approve ofso that Menā may fully approve of·त्वां सुतार्पितमानसा (tvāṃ sutārpitamānasā) — you — she whose heart is devoted to her daughteryou — she whose heart is devoted to her daughter

सती त्वया परित्यक्ता (satī tvayā parityaktā) — Satī was forsaken by youSatī was forsaken by you·कामो दग्धः पुरा कृतः (kāmo dagdhaḥ purā kṛtaḥ) — and Kāma was, in the past, burnt [by you]and Kāma was, in the past, burnt [by you]·कथं तदा वसिष्ठश्च (kathaṃ tadā vasiṣṭhaśca) — how then [was] Vasiṣṭhahow then [was] Vasiṣṭha·प्रभो प्रस्थापितोऽधुना (prabho prasthāpito'dhunā) — O lord, now sent [to Himālaya]O lord, now sent [to Himālaya]

स्थिरो भव महादेव (sthiro bhava mahādeva) — O Mahādeva, remain steadyO Mahādeva, remain steady·स्त्रीणां वचसि साम्प्रतम् (strīṇāṃ vacasi sāmpratam) — now, under the speech of the womennow, under the speech of the women·विवाहे व्यवहारोऽस्ति (vivāhe vyavahāro'sti) — at a wedding it is customaryat a wedding it is customary·पुरन्ध्रीणां प्रगल्भता (purandhrīṇāṃ pragalbhatā) — for married women to be bold [of speech]for married women to be bold [of speech]

कामं पूरय पार्वत्याः (kāmaṃ pūraya pārvatyāḥ) — fulfil the desire of Pārvatīfulfil the desire of Pārvatī·कामशास्त्रविशारद (kāmaśāstraviśārada) — O expert in the science of loveO expert in the science of love·कुरु पारं स्वयं कामी (kuru pāraṃ svayaṃ kāmī) — being yourself desirous, cross overbeing yourself desirous, cross over·कामिनीकामसागरम् (kāminīkāmasāgaram) — the ocean of a loving woman's desirethe ocean of a loving woman's desire

जानासि भावं भावज्ञ (jānāsi bhāvaṃ bhāvajña) — you know the inner feeling, O knower of heartsyou know the inner feeling, O knower of hearts·कामार्तानां च योषिताम् (kāmārtānāṃ ca yoṣitām) — of women afflicted by desireof women afflicted by desire·न च स्वं स्वामिनं शम्भो (na ca svaṃ svāminaṃ śambho) — O Śambhu, [a woman guards] nothing of her own but her husband and lordO Śambhu, [a woman guards] nothing of her own but her husband and lord·ईश्वरं पाति सन्ततम् (īśvaraṃ pāti santatam) — whom, as her lord, she ceaselessly serveswhom, as her lord, she ceaselessly serves

भोगं दिव्यं विना भुक्त्वा (bhogaṃ divyaṃ vinā bhuktvā) — without partaking of the due enjoymentwithout partaking of the due enjoyment·न हि तुष्येत्क्षुधातुरः (na hi tuṣyetkṣudhāturaḥ) — one afflicted by hunger is indeed not satisfiedone afflicted by hunger is indeed not satisfied·येन तुष्टिर्भवेच्छंभो (yena tuṣṭirbhavecchaṃbho) — O Śambhu, by whatever brings satisfactionO Śambhu, by whatever brings satisfaction·तत्कर्तुमुचितं स्त्रियाः (tatkartumucitaṃ striyāḥ) — that is proper to do for a womanthat is proper to do for a woman

तूर्णं प्रस्थापय प्रीत्या (tūrṇaṃ prasthāpaya prītyā) — quickly send off, with lovequickly send off, with love·पार्वत्या सह शङ्करम् (pārvatyā saha śaṅkaram) — Śaṅkara, together with PārvatīŚaṅkara, together with Pārvatī·रत्नप्रदीपं ताम्बूलं (ratnapradīpaṃ tāmbūlaṃ) — a jewelled lamp, betela jewelled lamp, betel·तल्पं निर्माय निर्जने (talpaṃ nirmāya nirjane) — having prepared a bed in a secluded placehaving prepared a bed in a secluded place

स्त्रीणां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा (strīṇāṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā) — hearing that speech of the womenhearing that speech of the women·ता उवाच शिवः स्वयम् (tā uvāca śivaḥ svayam) — Śiva himself said to themŚiva himself said to them·निर्विकारश्च भगवान् (nirvikāraśca bhagavān) — the changeless lordthe changeless lord·योगीन्द्राणां गुरोर्गुरुः (yogīndrāṇāṃ gurorguruḥ) — the guru even of the guru of the great yoginsthe guru even of the guru of the great yogins

देव्यो न ब्रूत वचनम् (devyo na brūta vacanam) — O goddesses, do not speak such wordsO goddesses, do not speak such words·एवंभूतं ममान्तिकम् (evaṃbhūtaṃ mamāntikam) — of this kind, in my presenceof this kind, in my presence·जगतां मातरः साध्व्यः (jagatāṃ mātaraḥ sādhvyaḥ) — you are the virtuous mothers of the worldsyou are the virtuous mothers of the worlds·पुत्रे चपलता कथम् (putre capalatā katham) — how [can there be] frivolity toward your own sonhow [can there be] frivolity toward your own son
