Chapter Twelve·Dakṣa's Vision of the Goddess·Verses 1–37
Nārada asks Brahmā how Dakṣa obtained his boon from the goddess, and how she came to be born as his daughter. Brahmā tells how Dakṣa, commanded by him, went to the shore of the Ocean of Milk and performed three thousand years of severe austerity — fasting variously on air, water and leaves — meditating upon Durgā, until she appeared before him directly in her radiant, four-armed, lion-borne form. Dakṣa praises her at length, and, pleased, she asks him to name his desire. Dakṣa explains that his lord Śiva, though born as Rudra from Brahmā, has as yet no wife, and begs the goddess herself to become his own daughter and delude the changeless, self-controlled Śiva into taking her as his bride — a wish, he says, shared by Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śiva alike, and not his alone. Smiling, and calling Śiva to mind, the goddess agrees: she will indeed be born of Dakṣa's wife, and through great effort and devotion win Śiva as her own. But she exacts from Dakṣa a solemn vow in return — that if he should ever fail to honour her, she will renounce that body outright. Having given her word, she vanishes before his eyes, and Dakṣa returns to his own hermitage, rejoicing that she will soon be born as his daughter.
