Chapter Eleven · Brahmā's Hymn and the Goddess's Boon · Verses 1–51

Nārada asks Brahmā what happened once Viṣṇu had vanished. Brahmā tells how, humbled and grieving, he praised Yoganidrā — Durgā — with a devoted hymn, and she appeared before him directly in her radiant, four-armed, lion-borne form. In an extended hymn (verses 10-15) Brahmā extols her as the power underlying Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Maheśa alike, the cause of the three guṇas yet beyond them. Pleased, the goddess asks what he desires; Brahmā confesses his sorrow at Śiva's public rebuke over his lapse toward his own daughter, and begs her to become Dakṣa's daughter and delude the changeless, desireless Śiva into taking a wife, since none else — not Viṣṇu, not Lakṣmī, not Kāma, not Brahmā himself — is capable of it. Reflecting privately, the goddess is astonished that even wise Brahmā could imagine Śiva, the supreme, unqualified lord, capable of delusion; yet a devotee's boon cannot be refused, so she calls Śiva to mind, and with his sanction speaks again, now as Durgā, confirming that she alone can accomplish this. She promises to take birth as Satī, the daughter of Dakṣa, and through her own devotion make Śiva subject to her, just as Lakṣmī is to Viṣṇu, before vanishing from Brahmā's sight. Brahmā then goes and relates the whole matter to his sons.

Just as any other creature on earth remains in a woman's power, so, through devotion to me, that Hara shall become subject to a woman's will.

When she had vanished, I, the grandfather of the worlds, went to where my own sons were, and related everything to them.
