Chapter 38·The Dispute of Kṣuva and Dadhīci·Verses 1–63
Nārada asks why Viṣṇu, forsaking Śiva, went to Dakṣa's sacrifice and was disgraced there. Brahmā answers with the old story of Dadhīci and King Kṣuva: a quarrel over the supremacy of brāhmaṇas and kings ends with Kṣuva's vajra unable to touch Dadhīci, who has been made invulnerable by the Mahāmṛtyuñjaya mantra taught to him by Śukrācārya and won as a boon from Śiva himself. Defeated, Kṣuva turns to Viṣṇu, who admits his own powerlessness before a devotee of Rudra — and foretells his own death and revival at Dakṣa's sacrifice.

Once, over a matter of long austerity, a dispute arose between Kṣuva and Dadhīci — a dispute that grew calamitous and became famous throughout the three worlds.

Especially for Rudra's devotees, O king, there is no fear at all. Should I act against this brāhmaṇa, it would only bring sorrow, and would become, for me too, a god, grounds for his curse.

By his curse, O king of kings, my destruction will come at Dakṣa's sacrifice at the hands of the lord of the gods — and my revival as well.

Therefore, O king of kings, even with everyone gathered, no sacrifice at all will come to pass. I shall make an effort, O king of kings, for your victory over Dadhīci.

Hearing Hari's words, King Kṣuva said, 'So be it,' and remained right there, his heart eager with love for that undertaking.
