Chapter Nineteen·Kubera's Friendship with Śiva·Verses 1–33
Brahmā tells how Kubera, born to Viśravas by Pulastya's grace in a former kalpa and already enjoying Alakā by Śiva's favour, on the passing of that kalpa performed the most fierce tapas anew at Kāśī, setting up a liṅga of Śambhu and meditating unwaveringly on oneness with Śiva until his body was reduced to skin and bone. Viśveśvara himself, with Pārvatī, then appeared before him; blinded by Śiva's radiance, Kubera begged only for the power to see him, which Śiva granted with a touch — but on opening his eyes he first beheld Umā, and, staring at her again and again in helpless wonder, burst his left eye through her displeased glance. Śiva reassures Pārvatī that the look was reverent awe at her own tapo-glory, not malice, and grants Kubera lordship of all the treasures, the guhyakas, yakṣas and kinnaras, kingship over kings, and his own eternal friendship, dwelling forever by Alakā; Pārvatī, asked in turn to bless him, decrees his one eye shall stay tawny and that he be named Kubera for his unwitting envy of her beauty. Śiva and Pārvatī then depart for their own abode, Vaiśveśvara, leaving Kailāsa — close by Alakā — as Śiva's own dwelling ever after.
