Brahmā continues Guṇanidhi's story: disowned, he wanders in despair and, hungry, follows a devotee's offerings into a Śiva temple on Śivarātri, meaning only to steal food once the worshippers sleep. There he relights the guttering lamp before the liṅga with a strip torn from his own cloth before eating the naivedya; fleeing, he is struck down by the city watch and dies. Yama's fearsome messengers come to bind him, but Śiva's own gaṇas intervene, and when the dispute reaches Yamarāja himself, he recognises the boy's unwitting merit — tending Śiva's lamp and eating his offering by grace — releases him to Śivaloka, and lays down for his servants an eternal law: never to touch anyone marked as Śiva's own. Guṇanidhi enjoys Śivaloka, is reborn as Dama, son of the king of Kaliṅga, rules by the one law of lighting lamps in every Śiva temple in his realm, and after death becomes Kubera himself, lord of Alakā. Brahmā closes by promising to tell next how this Kubera came to befriend Śiva.
