Nārada again asks Brahmā when Śiva went to Kailāsa and became friends with Kubera; Brahmā answers with the story of Guṇanidhi, wayward son of the learned brāhmaṇa Yajñadatta of Kāmpilya. Well-raised and well-educated, Guṇanidhi falls into gambling behind his father's back, squandering household wealth on fellow gamblers while his devoted mother repeatedly shields him with lies, urging him in vain toward good conduct. Yajñadatta finally learns the truth when he recognises his own stolen ring on a gambler's hand, who names Guṇanidhi as its source and mocks the father for not knowing his own son. Ashamed, Yajñadatta returns home and demands the ring back from his wife, who — caught in her own web of lies over one vanished household item after another — is finally driven to offer him funerary water as for the dead, so as to disown their son. Yajñadatta declares that childlessness is better than a son who disgraces the family, and, resolved to that principle, marries again, taking a śrotriya's daughter as his second wife.
