Chapter Fourteen · The Seven Vāras · Verses 1–46

The sages ask Sūta to explain the fire-sacrifice, the sacrifice to the gods, the sacrifice to Brahman, worship of the guru, and the satisfaction of Brahman, in order. Sūta defines each: agnihotra as the oblation offered into fire (or, for renunciates, simply their measured meal); deva-yajña as the sthālīpāka and similar rites offered with the gods in mind; brahma-yajña as the daily study of the Veda. He then tells how Mahādeva, physician of saṃsāra, at the start of creation devised the seven vāras — Sun for health, Moon for prosperity, Mars for the removal of sloth, Mercury as protector, Jupiter for nourishment and long life, Venus for enjoyment, Saturn against untimely death — with the mantra, oblation, gift and food proper to each, and closes by promising the fruit of the sacrifice to the gods to whoever hears or recites this chapter.
