Chapter Fifteen · Place, Time and Recipient · Verses 1–61

The sages ask Sūta to explain, in order, the worth of place, time, recipient and giving. Sūta ranks holy places tenfold, from a pure house through cow-pen, riverbank, temple, holy ford, the seven Gaṅgā-rivers, ocean-shore, mountain-peak, up to wherever the mind itself delights; ranks the four ages by the fruit an act bears; and ranks holy times — solstice, equinox, and above all a solar eclipse, whose danger to the sun is itself what makes it so fruitful to act in. He defines the true recipient (pātra) as one who himself saves from falling, sets out the ten limbs of proper food-giving and how its fruit multiplies by day of the week and number fed, prescribes which deity to hold in mind when giving to each kind of person, ranks wealth by how it was earned, catalogues twelve articles of giving proper to the twelve months and what each is thought to grant, and closes by opening sacrifice — verbal, bodily, or in whatever small way one can — to even the poorest, and promising the fruit of dharma-mindedness and knowledge to whoever hears this chapter.
