Chapter Sixteen · Worship of the Earthen Liṅga · Verses 1–117

The sages ask Sūta for the rule of worshipping an earthen image. Sūta describes fashioning an image from river or well clay and worshipping Gaṇeśa, the sun, Viṣṇu, the Mother and Śiva's own liṅga with the sixteen offerings, then works through the fruit each offering bears (bathing, fragrance, food, incense, lamp, betel) and how worship's fruit multiplies by vāra, tithi and nakṣatra — Gaṇapati on the dark fourth, the sun in Śrāvaṇa, Viṣṇu on the twelfth, the Mother in Kārtika, Śiva on Ārdrā nights, and a whole constellation of Kṛttikā-day deities through the week. He sets out the great food-offering (mahānaivedya) built from twelve of everything, and the birth-offering (janma-naivedya) that ends rebirth when given to Śiva. The chapter closes with its philosophical heart: bindu and nāda as Śakti and Śiva, their union as the liṅga and the cause of the world, the liṅga as mother and father whose worship ends the jīva's birth-bondage, and the six liṅgas — praṇava, self-manifest, yantra, installed, portable, and the guru's own body — whose daily worship brings liberation while living.

Best of men, declare the rule for the worship of an earthen image, by which rule of worship every desire is obtained.
