Chapter Seventeen · The Greatness of the Pañcākṣara · Verses 1–153

The sages ask Sūta to explain the greatness of the praṇava, the six liṅgas, and the worship of Śiva's devotees. Sūta distinguishes the subtle, one-syllabled praṇava from the gross, five-syllabled pañcākṣara, and the short from the long form, giving the fruit of each count of recitation up through conquest of the elements and the ego. He describes the three kinds of Śiva-yogī — devoted to ritual action, to austerity, and to recitation — and lays out the full puraścaraṇa rite of the pañcākṣara. He then unfolds the great cosmology of the lokas: the fourteen worlds each of effect-Brahmā, effect-Viṣṇu, effect-Rudra and effect-Īśvara, Kālacakreśvara's concealing form mounted on the buffalo of adharma at the edge of time, and beyond the wheel of time the causal worlds culminating in the five-enclosure Jñāna-Kailāsa and Śivaloka itself, with its pavilions of Nandin, the five faces, and the primal liṅga. The chapter closes by declaring Śiva and his devotee to be without difference, ranking the devotee's worship above all lesser attainments, and promising the fruit of Śiva's grace to whoever hears or recites this chapter.

Great sage, declare to us in order the greatness of the praṇava, of the six liṅgas, and the worship of a devotee of Śiva, O lord.

"Pra" indeed [refers to] the great ocean of saṃsāra born of prakṛti; "nava" is a new ship [to cross it] — thus the wise know the praṇava.

"Pra" is the phenomenal world, "na" is "not", "vaḥ" is "for you" — thus they know the praṇava; and since it forcefully leads you to release, they know it as the praṇava.

The subtle is indeed for the one liberated while living, the essence of everything beneficial; the pursuit of its meaning together with the mantra continues until the dissolution of one's own body.

This, thus, is the long praṇava, lodged in the heart of yogis alone. The "ma", of the nature of these three principles, is called the short praṇava.
