Chapter 35·The Story of Padmā and Pippalāda·Verses 1–62
Nārada asks Brahmā what Himālaya did upon hearing the story of Anaraṇya's gift of his daughter, and Brahmā narrates that Himālaya, with folded hands, again questioned Vasiṣṭha, asking what Padmā did after obtaining the aged sage Pippalāda as her husband. Vasiṣṭha tells how Pippalāda, worn out by age, lived contentedly in his forest hermitage with his young wife, whom Padmā served with perfect devotion, like Lakṣmī serving Nārāyaṇa. One day, as she went to bathe in the golden river, Dharma, disguised by his own māyā as a splendid young king, saw her and, wishing to test the sage's wife, propositioned her with flattering words, urging her to abandon her dying, aged husband for himself. Padmā spurned him fiercely, condemning any woman ruled by desire and any man enslaved by a woman as sinners shunned by gods and ancestors alike, and declared she would never forsake Pippalāda, purified by austerity, for a lustful stranger. Not knowing his true identity, and only realizing after the fact that she had, in her own manner, treated Dharma — himself the very embodiment of impartial judgment — as she would an erring son, she cursed him to decline over time. Dharma then dropped his disguise and, trembling, revealed his true form, explaining that he had come only to test her chastity and that her curse, issued in ignorance, was nonetheless a fitting chastisement, since punishment for wrongdoing is itself ordained by Śiva, whose supreme power over creation and destruction, over the elements, and over Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Maheśa he then extolled. Astonished and moved, Padmā asked why he had toyed with her, admitted her fault, and softened her curse into an ordinance: Dharma would stand complete in the Satya age but lose one leg in each successive age — Tretā, Dvāpara, and Kali — until, at the end of Kali, utterly broken, he would be made whole again with the return of Satya. Pleased with this fair resolution, Dharma blessed the still-devoted Padmā with abundant boons — a husband forever young, virtuous, and eloquent, more long-lived than Mārkaṇḍeya, wealthier than Kubera, more prosperous than Indra, equal to Viṣṇu in devotion to Śiva, to Kapila in accomplishment, to Bṛhaspati in wisdom, and to Brahmā in equanimity; lasting youth and good fortune for herself; and ten virtuous, long-lived sons surpassing their own father. Dharma then departed praising her everywhere, and Padmā lived on in joy with her husband, in time bearing sons of great merit, their household overflowing with prosperity in this world and the next. Concluding this ancient history, Vasiṣṭha urges Himālaya, now that he has heard its lesson, to abandon his stubbornness together with Menā and give his daughter Girijā, the primal Mother of the universe, to Śiva, the Father of the universe, at the rare and supremely auspicious hour soon to come — a week hence, in the month of Mārgaśīrṣa, on a fault-free Monday under benefic influences — so that he may fulfil his life's purpose. Having said this, Vasiṣṭha falls silent, remembering Śiva, lord of manifold divine sports.
