Chapter 34 · The Story of Anaraṇya · Verses 1–39

Continuing his account to Himālaya, Vasiṣṭha narrates the story of King Anaraṇya, born in the line of the fourteenth Manu, Indrasāvarṇi — a devout worshipper of Śiva, lord of the seven continents, who performed a hundred sacrifices yet refused even the office of Indra when the gods offered it to him. Anaraṇya had a hundred sons and a single daughter, Padmā, dearer to him than all of them, whom he sought to marry well as she came of age. Meanwhile the sage Pippalāda, glimpsing a gandharva couple absorbed in amorous play in a place set apart for austerity, was overcome by desire, and, having later seen Padmā bathing in the Puṣpabhadrā, resolved to have her for himself despite his old age; learning from onlookers who she was, he went, still burning with desire, to beg alms at Anaraṇya's court. Received with honour, he demanded the princess outright, threatening to burn the kingdom to ashes if refused; the terrified king fell silent, and his court dissolved into weeping, as the queens swooned and the princes grieved. The royal guru and the family priest arrived and counselled the king that a daughter must eventually be given to some worthy person regardless, that no better recipient than this sage could be found in the three worlds, and that surrendering one to protect the rest — never abandoning a supplicant who has taken refuge — is an ancient and unbreakable rule of conduct. Persuaded, though wailing again and again, Anaraṇya adorned Padmā and gave her to the aged sage, who took her home rejoicing; the king himself then renounced everything and departed to the forest to practise austerities, whereupon his queen, unable to bear the double loss of husband and daughter, gave up her life, and the whole court fell into mourning. Anaraṇya, through his penance and devotion to Śiva, attained the eternal world of Śiva, while his righteous eldest son Kīrtimān succeeded him and ruled the kingdom as a father to his subjects. Concluding the exemplum, Vasiṣṭha urges Himālaya to follow Anaraṇya's example and give his own daughter to Śiva, thereby protecting his whole lineage and winning even the gods to his side.
