Chapter 40·The Narrative of Śaṅkhacūḍa's Slaying·Verses 1–43
Seeing his own chief warriors slain, Śaṅkhacūḍa, roused to fury, challenged Śiva to fight him directly, and hurled divine weapons and manifold, terrifying illusions at him. Śiva loosed the great Māheśvara missile, which instantly consumed all of Śaṅkhacūḍa's illusions and rendered his weapons powerless. The mighty lord then seized his trident to slay him, but a disembodied voice from the sky stayed his hand: though Śiva could destroy the universe in an instant, he must not violate the bound set by the Veda — Śaṅkhacūḍa could not die so long as the divine armour given by Hari remained on his body and so long as his wife's chastity endured. Hara agreed, and Viṣṇu, the refuge of the virtuous, came of his own will and, in the guise of an aged brāhmaṇa, approached Śaṅkhacūḍa and asked alms of him, promising to name his true request only afterward. Śaṅkhacūḍa consented, and the disguised Viṣṇu then asked for the divine armour; true to his word and ever devoted to brāhmaṇas, Śaṅkhacūḍa gave it up at once. By this device Hari took the armour, then assumed Śaṅkhacūḍa's own form and went to Tulasī, placing his seed in her womb for the sake of the gods' task. Meanwhile Śiva, urged on by his own resolve, seized the blazing trident named Vijaya — vast beyond measure, radiant as ten million suns, the very wheel of universal destruction — and hurled it upon Śaṅkhacūḍa, who was instantly reduced to ashes. The trident, its work done, returned through the sky to Śiva as swiftly as thought. The heavens resounded with drums and song, sages and gods offered praise, apsarases danced, and flowers rained upon Śiva without end; Hari, Brahmā, and Indra together praised him. By Śiva's grace, Śaṅkhacūḍa was released from his curse and restored to his true, former form. From his bones arose the race of conches, and conch-water was thereafter praised for the use of all beings except Śiva himself, being especially dear to Hari, Lakṣmī, and their kin. Having slain Śaṅkhacūḍa, Śaṅkara returned in triumph, mounted on his bull and surrounded by Umā, Skanda, and his hosts, to Śivaloka; Hari departed for Vaikuṇṭha, Kṛṣṇa grew tranquil, and the gods returned rejoicing to their own realms, while the whole world attained peace, its sky cleared and its earth made auspicious. The narrator closes by praising this account of Śiva's deed as the bestower of merit, fame, long life, enjoyment, liberation, and the fulfilment of every desire, declaring that a brāhmaṇa who hears it gains Brahmanical splendour, a kṣatriya victory, a vaiśya wealth, and a śūdra excellence.
