Vyāsa asks what Śiva did and said on hearing Bhadrakālī's report. Sanatkumāra recounts that Śaṅkara laughed and consoled her, then, heeding the voice from the sky and skilled in true knowledge, himself set out for battle mounted on his great bull, attended by Vīrabhadra and the rest, and accompanied by the Bhairavas and Kṣetrapālas, his own equals; reaching the field in his heroic form, he shone there like Death incarnate. Śaṅkhacūḍa, on seeing him, descended from his chariot and bowed to the ground in devotion, then remounted, donned his armour, and took up bow and arrows. A fierce hundred-year duel of arrows followed. Śaṅkhacūḍa struck Śiva's bull upon the head with sword and shield; Rudra cut both away with a single arrow. The dānava's javelin was split by Śiva's arrow, his discus pulverized by a blow of Śiva's fist, his whirled mace shattered to ash, and when he charged with an axe he was felled sportively to the ground. Reviving, Śaṅkhacūḍa remounted his chariot in splendour; Śiva sounded his ḍamaru and bowstring, blew his horn, and roared, while Mahākāla struck the earth and sky, and the Kṣetrapāla and Bhairava added their own thunderous cries, terrifying the dānavas and stirring a clamour of victory-shouts among the gaṇas as Hara challenged Śaṅkhacūḍa to stand and fight. Enraged, Dambha's son hurled a spear ablaze with garlands of fire at Rudra, which the Kṣetrapāla repelled with a meteor-flash from his own mouth. The great battle broke out anew, shaking earth, sky, mountains, and oceans; thousands of arrows were exchanged on both sides. Śambhu struck Śaṅkhacūḍa down with his trident, and when he revived he assailed Rudra afresh, multiplying his arms to cover him with ten thousand discuses, which Rudra, lord of Durgā, cut down with his own arrows. Śaṅkhacūḍa then charged with his mace at the head of his army to slay Hara; Hara severed the mace with his sword, and when Śaṅkhacūḍa seized a blazing trident in fury, Hara pierced his heart with his own trident. From the pierced heart there emerged a mighty being who cried, "Stand, stand!" — and as it issued forth, Hara, laughing, struck off the terrible head with his sword, and it fell to the ground. Kālī then devoured many asuras whose necks she crushed with her fangs; the Kṣetrapāla devoured others, and some were cut down or pierced by Bhairava's weapon; Vīrabhadra destroyed many heroes, and Nandīśvara slew many oppressors of the gods. As the many hosts of Śiva's attendants thus armed themselves in fury and destroyed the daityas and asuras, the greater part of Śaṅkhacūḍa's army perished, and many of his remaining warriors, overcome with fear, fled in rout.
