Sanatkumāra continues: entering the battle, Kālī let out a lion-roar that made the dānavas swoon, and again and again she gave an ill-omened peal of laughter, drank the honey-wine, and danced at the very front of the field; Ugradaṃṣṭrā, Ugradaṇḍā, and Koṭavī drank the wine there too, and the other goddesses danced and drank with her, while a great uproar of joy rose among the gods and the gaṇas. Seeing Kālī, Śaṅkhacūḍa himself advanced into the battle and gave his frightened dānavas assurance of safety. Kālī hurled a fire-weapon like the flame of dissolution, which the dānava king destroyed with the Vaiṣṇava weapon; she then loosed the Nārāyaṇa-weapon, which only grew fiercer as it found him unyielding, until, seeing it blaze, he fell prostrate and bowed to it again and again, and it was stilled. She next sent the Brahmā-weapon, consecrated with mantras; seeing it too ablaze, the dānava lord bowed and stood his ground, and so warded it off as well. Enraged, Śaṅkhacūḍa drew his bow and loosed divine weapons of his own at the goddess, who swallowed them all with her gaping mouth and roared with laughter, terrifying the dānavas; he hurled at her a spear a hundred yojanas long, which her net of divine weapons shattered into a hundred pieces, and then a Vaiṣṇava weapon at Caṇḍikā, which she nullified with the Māheśvara weapon. Thus a very long battle raged between them while gods and dānavas alike stood by only as onlookers. Then Kālī, wrathful and equal to Death itself, angrily took up the Pāśupata arrow, consecrated with mantras; but before she could loose it a bodiless voice arose from the sky, forbidding her — for even the unfailing Pāśupata could not bring death to the hero Śaṅkhacūḍa, and she should think of some other means. Heeding this, Bhadrakālī withheld that weapon, but in her hunger devoured a hundred lakh dānavas with ease, and rushed to devour Śaṅkhacūḍa himself, who held her back with a fearsome divine weapon; enraged in turn, he hurled at her a sun-bright, razor-sharp, terrible sword, which she swallowed before his very eyes as it blazed toward her. He loosed many more divine weapons, and she shattered every one into a hundred pieces as before; when she rushed again to devour him, the lord of all siddhis simply vanished. Unable to find him, Kālī shattered his chariot and slew his charioteer with a swift blow of her fist. The illusion-working Śaṅkhacūḍa then reappeared and hurled at Bhadrakālī a discus like the flame of dissolution, which she caught with ease in her left hand and, in anger, devoured with her own mouth; she then struck him with her fist in great fury, and he reeled and swooned for a moment, but on regaining his senses at once rose up and, regarding her as a mother, would not engage her in hand-to-hand combat. She seized him, whirled him around again and again, and flung him upward in her fury; he shot up and fell back down, then rose and bowed to Bhadrakālikā before mounting, with a joyful and unshaken heart, a most beautiful chariot wrought of the finest jewels. As Kālikā, still hungry, drank the blood of the dānavas she had slain, a bodiless voice again arose from the sky, telling her that a hundred thousand insolent, roaring dānava lords yet remained in the battle for her to devour — but that she must not set her mind on slaying the dānava king himself, for it was certain that this Śaṅkhacūḍa could not be slain by her. Hearing this word issued from the circle of the sky, Bhadrakālī ate and drank the flesh and blood of many dānavas, and then came into Śaṅkara's presence and related to him the whole account of the battle, in due order from beginning to end. सनत्कुमारजी आगे कहते हैं — युद्धभूमिमें पहुँचकर कालीने सिंहनाद किया, जिससे दानव मूर्च्छित हो गये; वे बार-बार अशुभ अट्टहास करती, मधुपान करतीं और रणके अग्रभागमें नृत्य करती रहीं। उग्रदंष्ट्रा, उग्रदण्डा तथा कोटवीने भी वहाँ मधुपान किया, और अन्य देवियाँ भी उनके साथ नृत्य करती हुई मधुपान करने लगीं; इससे गणों तथा देवताओंमें महान् हर्षका कोलाहल उत्पन्न हुआ। कालीको देखकर शङ्खचूड स्वयं युद्धभूमिमें आये और भयभीत दानवोंको अभयदान दिया। कालीने प्रलयाग्निकी शिखाके समान अग्न्यस्त्र चलाया, जिसे दानवराजने वैष्णवास्त्रसे नष्ट कर दिया; फिर उन्होंने नारायणास्त्र छोड़ा, जो दानवको प्रतिकूल देखकर बढ़ता ही गया, यहाँतक कि उसे प्रज्वलित देखकर शङ्खचूड भूमिपर गिरकर बार-बार प्रणाम करने लगे, तब वह शान्त हुआ। इसके बाद देवीने मन्त्रपूत ब्रह्मास्त्र चलाया; उसे भी प्रज्वलित देखकर दानवेन्द्रने प्रणामकर भूमिपर खड़े होकर उसे भी निष्फल कर दिया। क्रुद्ध होकर शङ्खचूडने धनुष खींचकर देवीपर दिव्यास्त्र छोड़े, जिन्हें देवीने अपने विशाल मुखसे निगलकर अट्टहासपूर्वक गर्जना की, जिससे दानव भयभीत हो गये; उन्होंने सौ योजन लम्बी शक्ति फेंकी, जिसके देवीने दिव्यास्त्रजालसे सौ टुकड़े कर दिये, तथा चण्डिकापर वैष्णवास्त्र चलाया, जिसे देवीने माहेश्वरास्त्रसे निष्फल किया। इस प्रकार बहुत देरतक दोनोंमें युद्ध होता रहा, देवता और दानव दोनों केवल दर्शक बने रहे। तब काल-सदृश क्रुद्ध महादेवी कालीने रोषपूर्वक मन्त्रपूत पाशुपत बाण उठाया; किन्तु उसके छूटनेसे पहले ही आकाशसे एक अशरीर वाणी हुई, जिसने उन्हें रोका — क्योंकि अमोघ पाशुपतास्त्रसे भी वीर शङ्खचूडकी मृत्यु सम्भव नहीं थी, अतः उन्हें कोई अन्य उपाय सोचनेको कहा गया। यह सुनकर भद्रकालीने वह अस्त्र नहीं चलाया, परन्तु भूखसे एक करोड़ दानवोंको लीलापूर्वक खा गयीं और स्वयं शङ्खचूडको भी खानेके लिये दौड़ीं, जिन्हें उसने एक भयंकर दिव्यास्त्रसे रोक दिया; क्रुद्ध होकर उसने सूर्यके समान तेजस्वी, तीक्ष्ण तथा अत्यन्त भयंकर खड्ग चलाया, जिसे देवीने उसके देखते-देखते ही निगल लिया। उसने और भी कई दिव्यास्त्र छोड़े, जिनके देवीने पूर्ववत् सौ-सौ टुकड़े कर दिये; जब देवी पुनः उसे खानेके लिये दौड़ीं, तब सर्वसिद्धीश्वर वह अन्तर्धान हो गया। उसे न देखकर कालीने अपनी मुष्टिसे उसका रथ तोड़ डाला और सारथिको मार डाला। तब मायावी शङ्खचूड पुनः प्रकट होकर प्रलयाग्निकी शिखाके समान चक्र भद्रकालीपर चलाने लगा, जिसे देवीने बायें हाथसे सहज ही पकड़कर क्रोधपूर्वक अपने मुखसे निगल लिया; फिर उन्होंने महाक्रोधसे मुष्टिप्रहार किया, जिससे दानवेन्द्र चक्कर खाकर क्षणभर मूर्च्छित हो गये, किन्तु तुरन्त सचेत होकर उठे और देवीको माता माननेके कारण उनके साथ बाहुयुद्ध नहीं किया। देवीने उन्हें पकड़कर बार-बार घुमाया और क्रोधपूर्वक ऊपर उछाल दिया; वे ऊपर उठकर पुनः नीचे गिरे, फिर उठकर भद्रकालिकाको प्रणामकर प्रसन्नचित्त रत्ननिर्मित सुन्दर विमानपर सवार हुए, महासमरमें भी विचलित नहीं हुए। इधर क्षुधातुर कालिका दानवोंका रक्तपान कर रही थीं, इसी बीच पुनः आकाशवाणी हुई कि युद्धमें अबतक उद्धत तथा गर्जनशील एक लाख दानव शेष हैं, उन्हें आप भक्षण करें, किन्तु दानवराजके वधका विचार न करें, क्योंकि यह निश्चित है कि शङ्खचूड आपसे अवध्य है। आकाशमण्डलसे निकली इस वाणीको सुनकर भद्रकालीने अनेक दानवोंका मांस-रुधिर खाया-पिया, और फिर शङ्करके समीप आकर उन्हें युद्धका सम्पूर्ण वृत्तान्त आद्योपान्त क्रमसे सुनाया।
१ सा च गत्वा हि सङ्ग्रामं सिंहनादं चकार ह । देव्याश्च तेन नादेन मूर्च्छामापुश्च दानवाः ॥ १॥
sā ca gatvā hi saṅgrāmaṃ siṃhanādaṃ cakāra ha | devyāśca tena nādena mūrcchāmāpuśca dānavāḥ ||
वे [कालीदेवी] युद्धभूमिमें जाकर सिंहनाद करने लगीं; देवीके उस नादसे दानव मूर्च्छित हो गये।
And she [Kālī], having gone into the battle, let out a lion-roar; by that roar of the goddess the dānavas fell into a swoon.
सा च गत्वा हि सङ्ग्रामं (sā ca gatvā hi saṅgrāmaṃ) — and she, having gone into the battleसिंहनादं चकार ह (siṃhanādaṃ cakāra ha) — let out a lion-roarदेव्याश्च तेन नादेन (devyāśca tena nādena) — and by that roar of the goddessमूर्च्छामापुश्च दानवाः (mūrcchāmāpuśca dānavāḥ) — the dānavas fell into a swoon
२ अट्टाट्टहासमशिवं चकार च पुनः पुनः । तदा पपौ च माध्वीकं ननर्त रणमूर्द्धनि ॥ २॥
aṭṭāṭṭahāsamaśivaṃ cakāra ca punaḥ punaḥ | tadā papau ca mādhvīkaṃ nanarta raṇamūrddhani ||
वे बार-बार अशुभ अट्टहास करने लगीं; फिर उन्होंने माध्वीक (मधुपान) किया और युद्धके अग्रभागमें नृत्य करने लगीं।
Again and again she let out an ill-omened peal of laughter; then she drank the honey-wine and danced at the very front of the battle.
अट्टाट्टहासमशिवं (aṭṭāṭṭahāsamaśivaṃ) — an ill-omened peal upon peal of laughterचकार च पुनः पुनः (cakāra ca punaḥ punaḥ) — she made, again and againतदा पपौ च माध्वीकं (tadā papau ca mādhvīkaṃ) — then she drank a honey-wineननर्त रणमूर्द्धनि (nanarta raṇamūrddhani) — and danced at the head of the battle
३ उग्रदंष्ट्रा चोग्रदण्डा कोटवी च पपौ मधु । अन्याश्च देव्यस्तत्राजौ ननृतुर्मधु सम्पपुः ॥ ३॥
ugradaṃṣṭrā cogradaṇḍā koṭavī ca papau madhu | anyāśca devyastatrājau nanṛturmadhu sampapuḥ ||
उग्रदंष्ट्रा, उग्रदण्डा तथा कोटवी — इन्होंने वहाँ मधुपान किया; और उस समर-भूमिमें अन्य देवियोंने भी नृत्य करते हुए मधुपान किया।
Ugradaṃṣṭrā, Ugradaṇḍā, and Koṭavī drank the wine there; and the other goddesses in that battle danced and drank the wine together.
उग्रदंष्ट्रा च (ugradaṃṣṭrā ca) — and Ugradaṃṣṭrāउग्रदण्डा कोटवी च (ugradaṇḍā koṭavī ca) — Ugradaṇḍā, and Koṭavīपपौ मधु (papau madhu) — drank the wineअन्याश्च देव्यस्तत्राजौ (anyāśca devyastatrājau) — and the other goddesses there in the battle
४ महान् कोलाहलो जातो गणदेवदले तदा । जहृषुर्बहुगर्जन्तः सर्वे सुरगणादयः ॥ ४॥
mahān kolāhalo jāto gaṇadevadale tadā | jahṛṣurbahugarjantaḥ sarve suragaṇādayaḥ ||
तब गणों और देवताओंके समूहमें महान् कोलाहल उत्पन्न हुआ; सभी देवता, गण आदि जोर-जोरसे गर्जना करते हुए हर्षित हुए।
Then a great uproar arose in the host of the gaṇas and the gods; all the gods, the gaṇas, and the rest rejoiced, roaring loudly.

५ दृष्ट्वा कालीं शङ्खचूडः शीघ्रमाजौ समाययौ । दानवाश्च भयं प्राप्ता राजा तेभ्योऽभयं ददौ ॥ ५॥
dṛṣṭvā kālīṃ śaṅkhacūḍaḥ śīghramājau samāyayau | dānavāśca bhayaṃ prāptā rājā tebhyo'bhayaṃ dadau ||
कालीको देखकर शङ्खचूड शीघ्र ही युद्धभूमिमें आ गये; जो दानव भयभीत हो गये थे, राजाने उन्हें अभयदान दिया।
Seeing Kālī, Śaṅkhacūḍa quickly advanced into the battle; and to the dānavas who had fallen into fear, the king [Śaṅkhacūḍa] gave assurance of safety.
दृष्ट्वा कालीं शङ्खचूडः (dṛṣṭvā kālīṃ śaṅkhacūḍaḥ) — Śaṅkhacūḍa, seeing Kālīशीघ्रमाजौ समाययौ (śīghramājau samāyayau) — quickly came into the battleदानवाश्च भयं प्राप्ता (dānavāśca bhayaṃ prāptā) — and the dānavas, who had fallen into fearराजा तेभ्योऽभयं ददौ (rājā tebhyo'bhayaṃ dadau) — the king gave them freedom from fear
६ काली चिक्षेप वह्निं च प्रलयाग्निशिखोपमम् । राजा जघान तं शीघ्रं वैष्णवाङ्कितलीलया ॥ ६॥
kālī cikṣepa vahniṃ ca pralayāgniśikhopamam | rājā jaghāna taṃ śīghraṃ vaiṣṇavāṅkitalīlayā ||
कालीने प्रलयाग्निकी शिखाके समान अग्न्यस्त्र चलाया; राजाने वैष्णवास्त्रकी लीलासे शीघ्र ही उसे नष्ट कर दिया।
Kālī hurled a fire-weapon that resembled the flame of the fire of dissolution; the king quickly destroyed it with the ease of the Vaiṣṇava weapon.

७ नारायणास्त्रं सा देवी चिक्षेप तदुपर्यरम् । वृद्धिं जगाम तच्छस्त्रं दृष्ट्वा वामं च दानवम् ॥ ७॥
nārāyaṇāstraṃ sā devī cikṣepa taduparyaram | vṛddhiṃ jagāma tacchastraṃ dṛṣṭvā vāmaṃ ca dānavam ||
उन देवीने उसपर नारायणास्त्रका प्रबल प्रहार किया; दानवको प्रतिकूल देखकर वह अस्त्र और भी बढ़ने लगा।
That goddess then hurled the Nārāyaṇa-weapon vigorously upon him; on seeing the dānava turn adverse [to it], that weapon grew ever fiercer.
नारायणास्त्रं सा देवी (nārāyaṇāstraṃ sā devī) — that goddess [then hurled] the Nārāyaṇa-weaponचिक्षेप तदुपर्यरम् (cikṣepa tadupary aram) — cast it vigorously upon himवृद्धिं जगाम तच्छस्त्रं (vṛddhiṃ jagāma tacchastraṃ) — that weapon grew in forceदृष्ट्वा वामं च दानवम् (dṛṣṭvā vāmaṃ ca dānavam) — on seeing the dānava turn perverse
८ तं दृष्ट्वा शङ्खचूडश्च प्रलयाग्निशिखोपमम् । पपात दण्डवद्भूमौ प्रणनाम पुनःपुनः ॥ ८॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvā śaṅkhacūḍaśca pralayāgniśikhopamam | papāta daṇḍavadbhūmau praṇanāma punaḥpunaḥ ||
प्रलयाग्निकी शिखाके समान उस अस्त्रको देखकर शङ्खचूड दण्डकी भाँति भूमिपर गिर पड़े और बार-बार उसे प्रणाम करने लगे।
And Śaṅkhacūḍa, seeing it resembling the flame of the fire of dissolution, fell to the ground like a staff and bowed to it again and again.
तं दृष्ट्वा शङ्खचूडश्च (taṃ dṛṣṭvā śaṅkhacūḍaśca) — and Śaṅkhacūḍa, seeing itप्रलयाग्निशिखोपमम् (pralayāgniśikhopamam) — resembling the flame of the fire of dissolutionपपात दण्डवद्भूमौ (papāta daṇḍavadbhūmau) — fell to the ground like a staffप्रणनाम पुनःपुनः (praṇanāma punaḥpunaḥ) — and bowed to it again and again
९ निवृत्तिं प्राप तच्छस्त्रं दृष्ट्वा नम्रं च दानवम् । ब्रह्मास्त्रमथ सा देवी चिक्षेप मन्त्रपूर्वकम् ॥ ९॥
nivṛttiṃ prāpa tacchastraṃ dṛṣṭvā namraṃ ca dānavam | brahmāstramatha sā devī cikṣepa mantrapūrvakam ||
Doubtful readingThe word for "that weapon" here carries a stray extra conjunct mark in the received characters; it is read as the plain and grammatically sound tacchastraṃ, matching its identical use two verses earlier, rather than as a malformed longer conjunct.
दानवको इस प्रकार विनम्र देखकर वह अस्त्र शान्त हो गया; तब उन देवीने मन्त्रपूर्वक ब्रह्मास्त्रका प्रयोग किया।
On seeing the dānava so humbled, that weapon came to rest; then the goddess hurled the Brahmā-weapon, consecrated with mantras.
निवृत्तिं प्राप तच्छस्त्रं (nivṛttiṃ prāpa tacchastraṃ) — that weapon came to a haltदृष्ट्वा नम्रं च दानवम् (dṛṣṭvā namraṃ ca dānavam) — on seeing the dānava humbledब्रह्मास्त्रमथ सा देवी (brahmāstramatha sā devī) — then that goddess [took up] the Brahma-weaponचिक्षेप मन्त्रपूर्वकम् (cikṣepa mantrapūrvakam) — and hurled it with mantras

taṃ dṛṣṭvā prajjvalantaṃ ca praṇamya bhuvi saṃsthitaḥ | brahmāstreṇa dānavendro vinirvāraṃ cakāra ha ||
उस प्रज्वलित ब्रह्मास्त्रको देखकर दानवेन्द्र प्रणामकर भूमिपर खड़े हो गये; इस प्रकार उन्होंने ब्रह्मास्त्रको भी निष्फल कर दिया।
Seeing it blazing forth, he bowed and stood upon the ground; thus the lord of the dānavas warded off the Brahmā-weapon.
तं दृष्ट्वा प्रज्ज्वलन्तं च (taṃ dṛṣṭvā prajjvalantaṃ ca) — seeing it blazing forthप्रणम्य भुवि संस्थितः (praṇamya bhuvi saṃsthitaḥ) — he bowed and stood upon the groundब्रह्मास्त्रेण दानवेन्द्रो (brahmāstreṇa dānavendro) — the lord of the dānavas, by [bowing to] the Brahma-weaponविनिर्वारं चकार ह (vinirvāraṃ cakāra ha) — thus warded it off

तब क्रुद्ध दानवेन्द्रने बड़े वेगसे धनुष खींचकर मन्त्रपूर्वक देवीपर दिव्यास्त्र छोड़े।
Then the wrathful lord of the dānavas, drawing his bow with great force, hurled divine weapons at the goddess, consecrated with mantras.

अपना विशाल मुख फैलाकर उन्होंने युद्धमें उन अस्त्रोंको अपना आहार बना लिया, और अट्टहासके साथ गर्जना की; इससे दानव भयभीत हो उठे।
Opening her mouth wide, she made them her food in that battle, and roared out with laughter; the dānavas fell into fear.

He hurled at Kālī a spear stretching a hundred yojanas long; the goddess, with a net of divine weapons, shattered it into a hundred pieces.

फिर उसने चण्डिकापर वैष्णवास्त्र चलाया; कालीने माहेश्वरास्त्रसे उसे निष्फल कर दिया।
And he hurled the Vaiṣṇava weapon upon Caṇḍikā; and Kālī, with the Māheśvara weapon, warded it off.
स च वैष्णवमस्त्रं च (sa ca vaiṣṇavamastraṃ ca) — and he [then hurled] the Vaiṣṇava weaponचिक्षेप चण्डिकोपरि (cikṣepa caṇḍikopari) — cast it upon Caṇḍikāमाहेश्वरेण काली च (māheśvareṇa kālī ca) — and Kālī, with the Māheśvara weaponविनिर्वारं चकार सा (vinirvāraṃ cakāra sā) — warded it off
१५ एवं चिरतरं युद्धमन्योऽन्यं सम्बभूव ह । प्रेक्षका अभवन् सर्वे देवाश्च दानवा अपि ॥ १५॥
evaṃ cirataraṃ yuddhamanyo'nyaṃ sambabhūva ha | prekṣakā abhavan sarve devāśca dānavā api ||
इस प्रकार दोनोंके बीच बहुत देरतक युद्ध होता रहा; सभी देवता तथा दानव भी केवल दर्शक बनकर रह गये।
Thus a very long battle went on between the two of them; all the gods and the dānavas alike became mere onlookers.
एवं चिरतरं युद्धम् (evaṃ cirataraṃ yuddham) — thus, for a very long time, the battleअन्योऽन्यं सम्बभूव ह (anyo'nyaṃ sambabhūva ha) — went on between the two of themप्रेक्षका अभवन् सर्वे (prekṣakā abhavan sarve) — all became mere onlookersदेवाश्च दानवा अपि (devāśca dānavā api) — the gods as well as the dānavas
१६ अथ कुद्धा महादेवी काली कालसमा रणे । जग्राह मन्त्रपूतं च शरं पाशुपतं रुषा ॥ १६॥
atha kuddhā mahādevī kālī kālasamā raṇe | jagrāha mantrapūtaṃ ca śaraṃ pāśupataṃ ruṣā ||
तब क्रुद्ध हुई महादेवी काली, जो युद्धमें कालके समान थीं, रोषपूर्वक मन्त्रसे पवित्र किया हुआ पाशुपत बाण ग्रहण करने लगीं।
Then the enraged great goddess Kālī, equal to Kāla [Death] itself in that battle, angrily took up the Pāśupata arrow, purified with mantras.
अथ कुद्धा महादेवी (atha kuddhā mahādevī) — then the enraged great goddessकाली कालसमा रणे (kālī kālasamā raṇe) — Kālī, equal to Kāla [Death] in the battleजग्राह मन्त्रपूतं च (jagrāha mantrapūtaṃ ca) — took up, purified by mantras,शरं पाशुपतं रुषा (śaraṃ pāśupataṃ ruṣā) — the Pāśupata arrow, in anger
१७ क्षेपात्पूर्वं तन्निषेद्धुं वाग्बभूवाशरीरिणी । न क्षिपास्त्रमिदं देवि शङ्खचूडाय वै रुषा ॥ १७॥
kṣepātpūrvaṃ tanniṣeddhuṃ vāgbabhūvāśarīriṇī | na kṣipāstramidaṃ devi śaṅkhacūḍāya vai ruṣā ||
उसके छोड़े जानेसे पहले ही उसे रोकनेके लिये एक अशरीर वाणी हुई — हे देवि! इस अस्त्रको आप क्रोधवश शङ्खचूडपर मत चलाइये।
Before it could be cast, a bodiless voice arose to forbid it: "Do not, O goddess, hurl this weapon at Śaṅkhacūḍa in anger.
क्षेपात्पूर्वं तन्निषेद्धुं (kṣepātpūrvaṃ tanniṣeddhuṃ) — before it could be cast, to forbid itवाग्बभूवाशरीरिणी (vāgbabhūvāśarīriṇī) — a bodiless voice aroseन क्षिपास्त्रमिदं देवि (na kṣipāstramidaṃ devi) — do not hurl this weapon, O goddessशङ्खचूडाय वै रुषा (śaṅkhacūḍāya vai ruṣā) — at Śaṅkhacūḍa, in anger
१८ मृत्युः पाशुपतान्नास्त्यमोघादपि च चण्डिके । शङ्खचूडस्य वीरस्योपायमन्यं विचारय ॥ १८॥
mṛtyuḥ pāśupatānnāstyamoghādapi ca caṇḍike | śaṅkhacūḍasya vīrasyopāyamanyaṃ vicāraya ||
हे चण्डिके! अमोघ पाशुपतास्त्रसे भी वीर शङ्खचूडकी मृत्यु नहीं हो सकती, अतः कोई अन्य उपाय सोचिये।
Death does not lie for the hero Śaṅkhacūḍa even from the unfailing Pāśupata, O Caṇḍikā; consider some other means."
मृत्युः पाशुपतान्नास्ति (mṛtyuḥ pāśupatānnāsti) — death does not come from the Pāśupataअमोघादपि च चण्डिके (amoghādapi ca caṇḍike) — unfailing though it is, O Caṇḍikāशङ्खचूडस्य वीरस्य (śaṅkhacūḍasya vīrasya) — for the hero Śaṅkhacūḍaउपायमन्यं विचारय (upāyamanyaṃ vicāraya) — consider some other means
१९ इत्याकर्ण्य भद्रकाली न चिक्षेप तदस्त्रकम् । शतलक्षं दानवानां जघास लीलया क्षुधा ॥ १९॥
ityākarṇya bhadrakālī na cikṣepa tadastrakam | śatalakṣaṃ dānavānāṃ jaghāsa līlayā kṣudhā ||
यह सुनकर भद्रकालीने उस अस्त्रको नहीं चलाया, किन्तु भूखसे युक्त होकर उन्होंने लीलापूर्वक एक करोड़ दानवोंको खा डाला।
Having heard this, Bhadrakālī did not hurl that weapon; but, driven by hunger, she devoured a hundred lakh dānavas with ease.
इत्याकर्ण्य भद्रकाली (ityākarṇya bhadrakālī) — having heard this, Bhadrakālīन चिक्षेप तदस्त्रकम् (na cikṣepa tadastrakam) — did not hurl that weaponशतलक्षं दानवानां (śatalakṣaṃ dānavānāṃ) — a hundred lakh dānavasजघास लीलया क्षुधा (jaghāsa līlayā kṣudhā) — she devoured with ease, in hunger
२० अत्तुं जगाम वेगेन शङ्खचूडं भयङ्करी । दिव्यास्त्रेण च रौद्रेण वारयामास दानवः ॥ २०॥
attuṃ jagāma vegena śaṅkhacūḍaṃ bhayaṅkarī | divyāstreṇa ca raudreṇa vārayāmāsa dānavaḥ ||
वे भयंकर देवी शीघ्र ही शङ्खचूडको खानेके लिये दौड़ीं; उस दानवने दिव्य रौद्रास्त्रके द्वारा उन्हें रोक दिया।
The terrifying goddess rushed swiftly to devour Śaṅkhacūḍa; the dānava held her back with a divine and fearsome weapon.
अत्तुं जगाम वेगेन (attuṃ jagāma vegena) — she rushed swiftly to devour himशङ्खचूडं भयङ्करी (śaṅkhacūḍaṃ bhayaṅkarī) — the terrifying one, [rushed at] Śaṅkhacūḍaदिव्यास्त्रेण च रौद्रेण (divyāstreṇa ca raudreṇa) — with a divine and fearsome weaponवारयामास दानवः (vārayāmāsa dānavaḥ) — the dānava held her back
२१ अथ क्रुद्धो दानवेन्द्रः खड्गं चिक्षेप सत्वरम् । ग्रीष्मसूर्योपमं तीक्ष्णधारमत्यन्तभीकरम् ॥ २१॥
atha kruddho dānavendraḥ khaḍgaṃ cikṣepa satvaram | grīṣmasūryopamaṃ tīkṣṇadhāramatyantabhīkaram ||
तब क्रुद्ध दानवेन्द्रने ग्रीष्मकालीन सूर्यके समान, तीक्ष्ण धारवाला तथा अत्यन्त भयंकर खड्ग शीघ्र ही चला दिया।
Then the wrathful lord of the dānavas swiftly hurled a sword, resembling the summer sun, sharp-edged and exceedingly fearsome.
अथ क्रुद्धो दानवेन्द्रः (atha kruddho dānavendraḥ) — then the wrathful lord of the dānavasखड्गं चिक्षेप सत्वरम् (khaḍgaṃ cikṣepa satvaram) — swiftly hurled a swordग्रीष्मसूर्योपमं (grīṣmasūryopamaṃ) — resembling the summer sunतीक्ष्णधारमत्यन्तभीकरम् (tīkṣṇadhāramatyantabhīkaram) — sharp-edged and exceedingly fearsome
२२ सा काली तं समालोक्यायान्तं प्रज्वलितं रुषा । प्रसार्य मुखमाहारं चक्रे तस्य च पश्यतः ॥ २२॥
sā kālī taṃ samālokyāyāntaṃ prajvalitaṃ ruṣā | prasārya mukhamāhāraṃ cakre tasya ca paśyataḥ ||
उस प्रज्वलित खड्गको अपनी ओर आता देखकर कालीने रोषपूर्वक मुख फैलाकर उसके देखते-देखते ही उसे खा लिया।
Watching that blazing sword coming at her, Kālī, in anger, opened her mouth and made it her food right before his very eyes.
सा काली तं समालोक्य (sā kālī taṃ samālokya) — that Kālī, watching itआयान्तं प्रज्वलितं रुषा (āyāntaṃ prajvalitaṃ ruṣā) — coming ablaze, in angerप्रसार्य मुखमाहारं (prasārya mukhamāhāraṃ) — opening her mouth, made it her foodचक्रे तस्य च पश्यतः (cakre tasya ca paśyataḥ) — right before his own eyes
२३ दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि चान्यानि चिच्छेद दानवेश्वरः । प्राप्तानि पूर्वतश्चक्रे शतखण्डानि तानि च ॥ २३॥
divyānyastrāṇi cānyāni ciccheda dānaveśvaraḥ | prāptāni pūrvataścakre śatakhaṇḍāni tāni ca ||
दानवेश्वरने और भी कई दिव्यास्त्रोंका प्रयोग किया, किन्तु उन्होंने भी पूर्ववत् उन सबके सौ-सौ टुकड़े कर दिये।
The lord of the dānavas loosed many other divine weapons besides; as they reached her, she reduced them all to a hundred pieces, as before.
दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि चान्यानि (divyānyastrāṇi cānyāni) — and many other divine weaponsचिच्छेद दानवेश्वरः (ciccheda dānaveśvaraḥ) — the lord of the dānavas loosedप्राप्तानि पूर्वतश्चक्रे (prāptānipūrvataścakre) — as they reached her, she made themशतखण्डानि तानि च (śatakhaṇḍāni tāni ca) — a hundred pieces, as before
२४ पुनरत्तुं महादेवी वेगतस्तं जगाम ह । सर्वसिद्धेश्वरः श्रीमानन्तर्धानं चकार सः ॥ २४॥
punarattuṃ mahādevī vegatastaṃ jagāma ha | sarvasiddheśvaraḥ śrīmānantardhānaṃ cakāra saḥ ||
महादेवी पुनः उसे खानेके लिये बड़े वेगसे उसकी ओर दौड़ीं, किन्तु समस्त सिद्धियोंके स्वामी वह श्रीमान् अन्तर्धान हो गये।
Once more the great goddess rushed at him with great speed to devour him; but he, the glorious lord of all siddhis, made himself vanish.
पुनरत्तुं महादेवी (punarattuṃ mahādevī) — again, to devour him, the great goddessवेगतस्तं जगाम ह (vegatastaṃ jagāma ha) — rushed at him with great speedसर्वसिद्धेश्वरः श्रीमान् (sarvasiddheśvaraḥ śrīmān) — the glorious lord of all siddhisअन्तर्धानं चकार सः (antardhānaṃ cakāra saḥ) — he made himself vanish
२५ वेगेन मुष्टिना काली तमदृष्ट्वा च दानवम् । बभञ्ज च रथं तस्य जघान किल सारथिम् ॥ २५॥
vegena muṣṭinā kālī tamadṛṣṭvā ca dānavam | babhañja ca rathaṃ tasya jaghāna kila sārathim ||
उस दानवको न देखकर कालीने बड़े वेगसे अपनी मुष्टिकासे उसके रथको तोड़ डाला और उसके सारथिको मार डाला।
Kālī, not finding that dānava before her, swiftly shattered his chariot with her fist and indeed slew his charioteer.
वेगेन मुष्टिना काली (vegena muṣṭinā kālī) — Kālī, with her fist, swiftlyतमदृष्ट्वा च दानवम् (tamadṛṣṭvā ca dānavam) — not seeing that dānavaबभञ्ज च रथं तस्य (babhañja ca rathaṃ tasya) — shattered his chariotजघान किल सारथिम् (jaghāna kila sārathim) — and indeed slew his charioteer
२६ अथागत्य द्रुतं मायी चक्रं चिक्षेप वेगतः । भद्रकाल्यै शङ्खचूडः प्रलयाग्निशिखोपमम् ॥ २६॥
athāgatya drutaṃ māyī cakraṃ cikṣepa vegataḥ | bhadrakālyai śaṅkhacūḍaḥ pralayāgniśikhopamam ||
इसके बाद मायावी शङ्खचूडने शीघ्र ही प्रकट होकर प्रलयाग्निकी शिखाके समान चक्रको बड़े वेगसे भद्रकालीपर चलाया।
Then the illusion-wielding Śaṅkhacūḍa, quickly returning, hurled at Bhadrakālī, with great speed, a discus resembling the flame of the fire of dissolution.
अथागत्य द्रुतं मायी (athāgatya drutaṃ māyī) — then the illusion-wielder, having quickly returnedचक्रं चिक्षेप वेगतः (cakraṃ cikṣepa vegataḥ) — hurled a discus with great speedभद्रकाल्यै शङ्खचूडः (bhadrakālyai śaṅkhacūḍaḥ) — Śaṅkhacūḍa, at Bhadrakālīप्रलयाग्निशिखोपमम् (pralayāgniśikhopamam) — resembling the flame of the fire of dissolution
२७ सा देवी तं तदा चक्रं वामहस्तेन लीलया । जग्राह स्वमुखेनैवाहारं चक्रे रुषा द्रुतम् ॥ २७॥
sā devī taṃ tadā cakraṃ vāmahastena līlayā | jagrāha svamukhenaivāhāraṃ cakre ruṣā drutam ||
तब उन देवीने उस चक्रको अपने बायें हाथसे सहज ही पकड़ लिया, और क्रोधपूर्वक अपने मुखसे ही उसे शीघ्र खा लिया।
That goddess then caught that discus with her left hand with ease, and in anger swiftly made it her food with her own mouth.
सा देवी तं तदा चक्रं (sā devī taṃ tadā cakraṃ) — that goddess then, that discus,वामहस्तेन लीलया (vāmahastena līlayā) — with her left hand, with easeजग्राह स्वमुखेनैव (jagrāha svamukhenaiva) — seized it, and with her own mouthआहारं चक्रे रुषा द्रुतम् (āhāraṃ cakre ruṣā drutam) — in anger swiftly made it her food
२८ मुष्ट्या जघान तं देवी महाकोपेन वेगतः । बभ्राम दानवेन्द्रोऽपि क्षणं मूर्च्छामवाप सः ॥ २८॥
muṣṭyā jaghāna taṃ devī mahākopena vegataḥ | babhrāma dānavendro'pi kṣaṇaṃ mūrcchāmavāpa saḥ ||
देवीने महाक्रोधसे वेगपूर्वक अपनी मुष्टिसे उसपर प्रहार किया; दानवेन्द्र भी चक्कर खाकर क्षणभरके लिये मूर्च्छित हो गये।
In great fury the goddess swiftly struck him with her fist; the lord of the dānavas reeled and fell into a swoon for a moment.
मुष्ट्या जघान तं देवी (muṣṭyā jaghāna taṃ devī) — the goddess struck him with her fistमहाकोपेन वेगतः (mahākopena vegataḥ) — swiftly, in great furyबभ्राम दानवेन्द्रोऽपि (babhrāma dānavendro'pi) — the lord of the dānavas reeledक्षणं मूर्च्छामवाप सः (kṣaṇaṃ mūrcchāmavāpa saḥ) — and for a moment fell into a swoon
२९ क्षणेन चेतनां प्राप्य स चोत्तस्थौ प्रतापवान् । न चक्रे बाहु युद्धं च मातृबुद्ध्या तया सह ॥ २९॥
kṣaṇena cetanāṃ prāpya sa cottasthau pratāpavān | na cakre bāhu yuddhaṃ ca mātṛbuddhyā tayā saha ||
क्षणभरमें चेतना पाकर वे प्रतापी शङ्खचूड उठ खड़े हुए; परन्तु उन्हें माता समझकर उन्होंने उनके साथ बाहुयुद्ध नहीं किया।
Regaining his senses in a moment, the mighty Śaṅkhacūḍa rose up; but, regarding her with the thought of a mother, he did not engage her in hand-to-hand combat.
क्षणेन चेतनां प्राप्य (kṣaṇena cetanāṃ prāpya) — regaining his senses in a momentस चोत्तस्थौ प्रतापवान् (sa cottasthau pratāpavān) — the mighty one rose upन चक्रे बाहुयुद्धं च (na cakre bāhuyuddhaṃ ca) — and did not engage in hand-to-hand combatमातृबुद्ध्या तया सह (mātṛbuddhyā tayā saha) — with her, regarding her as a mother
३० गृहीत्वा दानवं देवी भ्रामयित्वा पुनः पुनः । ऊर्ध्वं च प्रापयामास महाकोपेन वेगतः ॥ ३०॥
gṛhītvā dānavaṃ devī bhrāmayitvā punaḥ punaḥ | ūrdhvaṃ ca prāpayāmāsa mahākopena vegataḥ ||
देवीने उस दानवको पकड़कर बार-बार घुमाया और महाक्रोधसे वेगपूर्वक उसे ऊपरकी ओर फेंक दिया।
The goddess seized the dānava, whirled him around again and again, and, in great fury, flung him swiftly upward.
गृहीत्वा दानवं देवी (gṛhītvā dānavaṃ devī) — the goddess, having seized the dānavaभ्रामयित्वा पुनः पुनः (bhrāmayitvā punaḥ punaḥ) — whirling him around again and againऊर्ध्वं च प्रापयामास (ūrdhvaṃ ca prāpayāmāsa) — flung him upwardमहाकोपेन वेगतः (mahākopena vegataḥ) — swiftly, in great fury
३१ उत्पपात च वेगेन शङ्खचूडः प्रतापवान् । निपत्य च समुत्तस्थो प्रणम्य भद्रकालिकाम् ॥ ३१॥
utpapāta ca vegena śaṅkhacūḍaḥ pratāpavān | nipatya ca samuttastho praṇamya bhadrakālikām ||
प्रतापी शङ्खचूड बड़े वेगसे ऊपर उछल गये; फिर नीचे गिरकर वे उठे और भद्रकालिकाको प्रणाम किया।
The mighty Śaṅkhacūḍa shot upward with great speed; and having fallen back down, he rose again, bowing to Bhadrakālikā.
उत्पपात च वेगेन (utpapāta ca vegena) — and with great speed shot upwardशङ्खचूडः प्रतापवान् (śaṅkhacūḍaḥ pratāpavān) — the mighty Śaṅkhacūḍaनिपत्य च समुत्तस्थो (nipatya ca samuttastho) — and, having fallen back down, he roseप्रणम्य भद्रकालिकाम् (praṇamya bhadrakālikām) — bowing to Bhadrakālikā
३२ रत्नेन्द्रसारनिर्माणविमानं सुमनोहरम् । आरुरोह स हृष्टात्मा न भ्रान्तोऽपि महारणे ॥ ३२॥
ratnendrasāranirmāṇavimānaṃ sumanoharam | āruroha sa hṛṣṭātmā na bhrānto'pi mahāraṇe ||
वे प्रसन्नचित्त होकर रत्नोंके सारसे बने अत्यन्त सुन्दर विमानपर सवार हुए, तथा उस महासमरमें भी विचलित नहीं हुए।
He, with a joyful heart, mounted a most beautiful chariot fashioned of the finest of jewels, unshaken even amid that great battle.
रत्नेन्द्रसारनिर्माणविमानं (ratnendrasāranirmāṇavimānaṃ) — a chariot fashioned of the finest of jewelsसुमनोहरम् (sumanoharam) — exceedingly beautifulआरुरोह स हृष्टात्मा (āruroha sa hṛṣṭātmā) — he, with a joyful heart, mounted itन भ्रान्तोऽपि महारणे (na bhrānto'pi mahāraṇe) — unbewildered even in the great battle
३३ दानवानां हि क्षतजं सा पपौ कालिका क्षुधा । एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्र वाग्बभूवाशरीरिणी ॥ ३३॥
dānavānāṃ hi kṣatajaṃ sā papau kālikā kṣudhā | etasminnantare tatra vāgbabhūvāśarīriṇī ||
क्षुधातुर कालिकाने दानवोंका रक्तपान किया; इसी बीच वहाँ एक अशरीर वाणी हुई।
Kālikā, in her hunger, drank the blood of the dānavas; and in the meantime a bodiless voice arose there.
दानवानां हि क्षतजं (dānavānāṃ hi kṣatajaṃ) — the blood of the dānavasसा पपौ कालिका क्षुधा (sā papau kālikā kṣudhā) — that Kālikā, in hunger, drankएतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्र (etasminnantare tatra) — in the meantime, thereवाग्बभूवाशरीरिणी (vāgbabhūvāśarīriṇī) — a bodiless voice arose
३४ लक्षं च दानवेन्द्राणामवशिष्टं रणेऽधुना । उद्धतं गुञ्जतां सार्द्धं ततस्त्वं भुङ्क्ष्व चेश्वरि ॥ ३४॥
lakṣaṃ ca dānavendrāṇāmavaśiṣṭaṃ raṇe'dhunā | uddhataṃ guñjatāṃ sārddhaṃ tatastvaṃ bhuṅkṣva ceśvari ||
इस समय युद्धमें उद्धत तथा गर्जना करते हुए एक लाख दानवेन्द्र शेष बचे हैं; अतः हे ईश्वरि! आप उनका भक्षण कीजिये।
"A hundred thousand of the lords of the dānavas remain now in this battle, insolent and roaring together — so, O sovereign goddess, devour them.
लक्षं च दानवेन्द्राणाम् (lakṣaṃ ca dānavendrāṇām) — and a lakh of the lords of dānavasअवशिष्टं रणेऽधुना (avaśiṣṭaṃ raṇe'dhunā) — remain now in the battleउद्धतं गुञ्जतां सार्द्धं (uddhataṃ guñjatāṃ sārddhaṃ) — insolent, together with the roaring [others]ततस्त्वं भुङ्क्ष्व चेश्वरि (tatastvaṃ bhuṅkṣva ceśvari) — so, O sovereign one, devour them
३५ सङ्ग्रामे दानवेन्द्रं च हन्तुं न कुरु मानसम् । अवध्योऽयं शङ्खचूडस्तव देवीति निश्चयम् ॥ ३५॥
saṅgrāme dānavendraṃ ca hantuṃ na kuru mānasam | avadhyo'yaṃ śaṅkhacūḍastava devīti niścayam ||
परन्तु हे देवि! संग्राममें आप दानवराज (शङ्खचूड) के वधका विचार न कीजिये, यह निश्चित है कि यह शङ्खचूड आपके द्वारा अवध्य है।
But do not set your mind to slay the lord of the dānavas in this battle; this Śaṅkhacūḍa is, it is certain, O goddess, unslayable by you."
सङ्ग्रामे दानवेन्द्रं च (saṅgrāme dānavendraṃ ca) — but the lord of the dānavas, in the battle,हन्तुं न कुरु मानसम् (hantuṃ na kuru mānasam) — do not set your mind to slayअवध्योऽयं शङ्खचूडः (avadhyo'yaṃ śaṅkhacūḍaḥ) — this Śaṅkhacūḍa is unslayableतव देवीति निश्चयम् (tava devīti niścayam) — by you, O goddess — this is certain
३६ तच्छुत्वा वचनं देवी निःसृतं व्योममण्डलात् । दानवानां बहूनां च मांसं च रुधिरं तथा ॥ ३६॥
tacchutvā vacanaṃ devī niḥsṛtaṃ vyomamaṇḍalāt | dānavānāṃ bahūnāṃ ca māṃsaṃ ca rudhiraṃ tathā ||
आकाशमण्डलसे निकली हुई उस वाणीको सुनकर देवीने अनेक दानवोंका मांस तथा रुधिर ग्रहण किया।
Having heard that word, issued from the circle of the sky, the goddess [then partook of] the flesh, and likewise the blood, of many dānavas.
तच्छुत्वा वचनं देवी (tacchrutvā vacanaṃ devī) — the goddess, having heard that wordनिःसृतं व्योममण्डलात् (niḥsṛtaṃ vyomamaṇḍalāt) — issued from the circle of the skyदानवानां बहूनां च (dānavānāṃ bahūnāṃ ca) — of many dānavasमांसं च रुधिरं तथा (māṃsaṃ ca rudhiraṃ tathā) — the flesh, and likewise the blood
३७ भुक्त्वा पीत्वा भद्रकाली शङ्करान्तिकमाययौ । उवाच रणवृत्तान्तं पौर्वापर्येण सक्रमम् ॥ ३७॥
bhuktvā pītvā bhadrakālī śaṅkarāntikamāyayau | uvāca raṇavṛttāntaṃ paurvāparyeṇa sakramam ||
खा-पीकर भद्रकाली शङ्करके समीप आयीं और उन्हें युद्धका सम्पूर्ण वृत्तान्त क्रमपूर्वक कह सुनाया।
Having eaten and drunk, Bhadrakālī came into the presence of Śaṅkara and told him the account of the battle, in due order, from beginning to end.
भुक्त्वा पीत्वा भद्रकाली (bhuktvā pītvā bhadrakālī) — having eaten and drunk, Bhadrakālīशङ्करान्तिकमाययौ (śaṅkarāntikamāyayau) — came into the presence of Śaṅkaraउवाच रणवृत्तान्तं (uvāca raṇavṛttāntaṃ) — and told the account of the battleपौर्वापर्येण सक्रमम् (paurvāparyeṇa sakramam) — in due order, from beginning to end
इति श्रीशिवमहापुराणे द्वितीयायां रुद्रसंहितायां पञ्चमे युद्धखण्डे शङ्खचूडवधे कालीयुद्धवर्णनं नामाष्टत्रिंशोऽध्यायः ॥ ३८॥
Thus ends the thirty-eighth chapter, called "The Description of Kālī's Battle," within the Śaṅkhacūḍa-vadha sub-narrative, in the Yuddha-khaṇḍa — the fifth section of the second Rudra-saṃhitā, in the glorious Śiva Mahāpurāṇa.
इस प्रकार श्रीशिवमहापुराणके अन्तर्गत द्वितीय रुद्रसंहिताके पञ्चम युद्धखण्डमें शङ्खचूडवधके अन्तर्गत कालीयुद्धवर्णन नामक अड़तीसवाँ अध्याय पूर्ण हुआ॥ ३८॥
