रुद्रसंहिता — युद्धखण्डअथ सप्तत्रिंशोऽध्यायः
Defeated by the dānavas and their bodies wounded by weapons, all the hosts of the gods fled in terror and turned back for refuge to Śaṅkara, lord of the universe, crying out with faltering voice, "Save us, save us!" Seeing their defeat and hearing their fearful plea, Śaṅkara blazed up in anger; yet looking on them with a compassionate glance he granted the gods freedom from fear, and increased the strength of his own gaṇas with his own splendour. Commanded by Śiva, the great hero Skanda, son of Hara, fought fearlessly against the hosts of the dānavas, and with a heroic roar slew a hundred akṣauhiṇīs in that battle. Lotus-eyed Kālī made the dānavas' blood flow, severed their heads and devoured them, drank their blood on every side, and waged a battle terrifying to gods and dānavas alike, seizing a hundred lakh elephants in a single hand and flinging them playfully into her mouth; a thousand headless trunks danced upon the field, and a great uproar arose among the faint-hearted. Skanda again loosed a rain of arrows and felled the leaders of the asuras by the crore, so that the surviving dānavas fled in dread of death; Vṛṣaparvā, Vipracitti, Daṇḍa, and Vikampana fought against him one after another, and Mahāmārī too fought on without turning back, wounding them all with Skanda's own power, until victory came to both Mahāmārī and Skanda, kettledrums sounding in heaven and a rain of flowers falling. Seeing Skanda's terrible and wondrous battle destroying the dānavas as though it were the dissolution of primordial nature, and the calamity wrought further by Mahāmārī, Śaṅkhacūḍa grew exceedingly enraged and himself donned his armour; mounting a splendid, jewel-adorned chariot fitted with manifold weapons, he went forth amid his great heroes and, drawing his bow to the ear, made a rain of arrows so irresistible and terrifying that it brought a dreadful darkness upon the place of slaughter. All the other gods fled, save Kārttikeya alone, who stood firm at the forefront; the king rained down mountains, serpents, nāgas, and trees, so that Skanda, struck by that sight, was overwhelmed like the sun hidden by dense mist. Śaṅkhacūḍa then wrought a manifold illusion taught to him by Maya, which none of the gods or gaṇas could perceive, and with a single divine arrow cut Skanda's bow, shattered his divine chariot, cut down its guards, and reduced his peacock-mount to shreds with a divine weapon; hurling a sun-bright, deadly spear at Skanda's chest, he felled him for a moment into a swoon. Regaining consciousness, Kārtika, slayer of enemy heroes, remounted his own gem-wrought vehicle and, remembering the feet of Maheśa together with Ambikā, took up his weapons and waged a fierce battle, cutting to pieces in anger every serpent, mountain, tree, and rock that Śaṅkhacūḍa hurled, warding off the fire-weapon with the Pārjanya arrow, and with ease cutting asunder Śaṅkhacūḍa's chariot, bow, armour, mounts, and gleaming crown; Śaṅkhacūḍa, roaring again and again, hurled a sun-bright spear at Skanda's chest, plunging him into a very long swoon, from which the mighty one rose after but a moment, radiant as Hari, and struck mighty Kārtikeya with an unfailing, fate-granted spear that felled him to the earth. Kālī took him into her lap and bore him to Śiva's presence, and Śiva, by his knowledge, easily restored him to life and granted him boundless strength, so that Skanda rose again, resolved once more to return to that field. Meanwhile the mighty hero Vīrabhadra fought Śaṅkhacūḍa in battle, effortlessly cutting down every weapon the dānava loosed, and hundreds of divine missiles besides; but Śaṅkhacūḍa, growing exceedingly enraged, struck him on the chest with a spear and felled him trembling to the ground, though Vīrabhadra, lord and foremost of the gaṇas, regained consciousness in a moment, rose, and took up his bow once more. Meanwhile Kālī went again into the battle, to devour the dānavas and protect her own at Kārtikeya's wish, and the heroes followed after her, together with Nandīśvara and the rest, all the gods, gandharvas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, and serpents, with vessels of wine and hundreds of bearers of musical instruments — and once again all the warriors on both sides stood ready for battle. दानवोंसे पराजित होकर तथा शस्त्रोंसे घायल होकर देवताओंके समस्त गण भयभीत होकर भाग गये और विश्वेश्वर शङ्करकी शरणमें लौटकर विह्वल वाणीसे "त्राहि, त्राहि" पुकारने लगे। उनकी पराजय देखकर तथा भयभीत वचन सुनकर शङ्करने क्रोध प्रकट किया, किन्तु कृपादृष्टिसे देखकर देवताओंको अभय दिया और अपने गणोंके बलको अपने तेजसे बढ़ाया। शिवकी आज्ञासे हरपुत्र महावीर स्कन्दने निर्भय होकर दानवगणोंसे युद्ध किया और वीरगर्जनासहित सौ अक्षौहिणी सेनाओंका संहार कर डाला। कमललोचना कालीने दानवोंका रक्त बहाया, उनके शिर काटकर खाये, चारों ओर उनका रक्त पिया, तथा देव-दानव दोनोंको भयभीत करनेवाला युद्ध किया — करोड़ों गजेन्द्रोंको एक ही हाथसे पकड़कर लीलापूर्वक मुखमें डाल दिया; सहस्रों कबन्ध रणभूमिमें नाचने लगे और कायरोंको भयभीत करनेवाला महान् कोलाहल उठा। स्कन्दने पुनः बाणोंकी वर्षा करके करोड़ों असुरनायकोंको गिरा दिया, जिससे शेष बचे दानव मृत्युके भयसे भाग गये; वृषपर्वा, विप्रचित्ति, दण्ड तथा विकम्पन क्रमशः स्कन्दसे युद्ध करने लगे, और महामारी भी कभी पीठ न दिखाकर युद्धरत रहीं, यहाँतक कि स्कन्दकी शक्तिसे वे सब घायल हो गये और महामारी-स्कन्द दोनोंकी विजय हुई, स्वर्गमें दुन्दुभियाँ बजीं और पुष्पवृष्टि हुई। स्कन्दके इस महाघोर, अद्भुत तथा प्रकृतिके प्रलयतुल्य युद्धको तथा महामारीद्वारा किये गये उपद्रवको देखकर शङ्खचूड अत्यन्त कुपित होकर स्वयं सन्नद्ध हो गया; नाना शस्त्र-अस्त्रोंसे युक्त तथा रत्नोंसे सुसज्जित श्रेष्ठ विमानपर चढ़कर वह महावीरोंसहित आगे बढ़ा और धनुषको कानतक खींचकर ऐसी दुर्निवार्य बाणवृष्टि की कि वधस्थलमें महाघोर अन्धकार छा गया। नन्दीश्वर आदि अन्य सभी देवता भाग गये, केवल कार्त्तिकेय अकेले युद्धके अग्रभागमें डटे रहे; राजाने पर्वतों, सर्पों, नागों तथा वृक्षोंकी वृष्टि की, जिससे उस दृश्यसे आहत स्कन्द घने कुहरेसे ढके सूर्यके समान आच्छादित हो गये। तब शङ्खचूडने मयद्वारा सिखायी गयी अपनी नाना मायाका प्रयोग किया, जिसे कोई देवता या गण नहीं जान सका, और एक ही दिव्य बाणसे स्कन्दका धनुष काट दिया, उनके दिव्य रथको तोड़ दिया, रथरक्षकोंको काटा, तथा दिव्यास्त्रसे मयूरको जर्जर कर दिया; फिर सूर्यके समान तेजस्वी घातिनी शक्ति उनके वक्षपर फेंककर उन्हें क्षणभरके लिये मूर्च्छित कर दिया। चेतना पाकर परवीरघाती कार्तिकने पुनः अपने रत्ननिर्मित वाहनपर आरोहण किया और साम्बिकासहित महेशके चरणोंका स्मरण करके शस्त्र-अस्त्र लेकर घोर युद्ध किया, क्रोधवश शङ्खचूडद्वारा फेंके गये सर्पों, पर्वतों, वृक्षों तथा पत्थरोंको काट डाला, पार्जन्य बाणसे अग्न्यस्त्रका निवारण किया, तथा लीलामात्रसे शङ्खचूडके रथ, धनुष, कवच, वाहन तथा उज्ज्वल मुकुटको भी काट दिया; बार-बार गरजते हुए शङ्खचूडने सूर्यतुल्य शक्तिसे स्कन्दके वक्षपर प्रहार कर उन्हें दीर्घ मूर्च्छामें डाल दिया, जहाँसे वह महाबली मुहूर्तभरमें ही हरिके समान तेजस्वी होकर उठा और महाबली कार्तिकेयको भी अमोघ, विधिप्रदत्त शक्तिसे मारकर पृथ्वीपर गिरा दिया। कालीने उन्हें गोदमें लेकर शिवके समीप पहुँचाया, और शिवने अपने ज्ञानसे लीलापूर्वक उन्हें जीवित करके अनन्त बल प्रदान किया, जिससे स्कन्द पुनः उठकर उसी रणक्षेत्रमें जानेका विचार करने लगे। इसी बीच महाबली वीरभद्रने बलशाली शङ्खचूडसे युद्ध किया, दानवद्वारा बरसाये गये तथा सैकड़ों दिव्यास्त्रोंको लीलामात्रमें अपने बाणोंसे काट डाला; किन्तु अत्यन्त कुपित शङ्खचूडने शक्तिसे उनके वक्षपर प्रहारकर उन्हें काँपते हुए भूमिपर गिरा दिया, तथापि गणाग्रणी वीरभद्र क्षणभरमें ही चेतना पाकर उठे और पुनः धनुष ग्रहण किया। इसी बीच काली दानवोंको खानेके लिये तथा अपने पक्षकी रक्षाके लिये कार्तिकेयकी इच्छासे पुनः युद्धमें गयीं, और वीरगण नन्दीश्वर आदिसहित उनके पीछे चले — सभी देवता, गन्धर्व, यक्ष, राक्षस, नाग, अनेक मद्यपात्र तथा सैकड़ों वाद्यवाहक भी साथ हो लिये — इस प्रकार दोनों ओरके समस्त वीर पुनः युद्धके लिये उद्यत हो गये।
१ तदा देवगणाः सर्वे दानवैश्च पराजिताः । दुद्रुवुर्भयभीताश्च शस्त्रास्त्रक्षतविग्रहाः ॥ १॥
tadā devagaṇāḥ sarve dānavaiśca parājitāḥ | dudruvurbhayabhītāśca śastrāstrakṣatavigrahāḥ ||
तब देवताओंके समस्त गण दानवोंसे पराजित होकर भयभीत हो गये और शस्त्र-अस्त्रोंसे घायल शरीर लिये इधर-उधर भाग गये।
Then all the hosts of the gods, defeated by the dānavas, fled about in fear, their bodies wounded by weapons and missiles.

२ ते परावृत्य विश्वेशं शङ्करं शरणं ययुः । त्राहि त्राहीति सर्वेशेत्यूचुर्विह्वलया गिरा ॥ २॥
te parāvṛtya viśveśaṃ śaṅkaraṃ śaraṇaṃ yayuḥ | trāhi trāhīti sarveśetyūcurvihvalayā girā ||
फिर लौटकर वे विश्वेश्वर शङ्करकी शरणमें गये और विह्वल वाणीसे "त्राहि, त्राहि, हे सर्वेश!" ऐसा पुकारने लगे।
Turning back, they went for refuge to Śaṅkara, lord of the universe; with faltering voice they cried, "Save us, save us, O lord of all!"

३ दृष्ट्वा पराजयं तेषां देवादीनां स शङ्करः । सभयं वचनं श्रुत्वा कोपमुच्चैश्चकार ह ॥ ३॥
dṛṣṭvā parājayaṃ teṣāṃ devādīnāṃ sa śaṅkaraḥ | sabhayaṃ vacanaṃ śrutvā kopamuccaiścakāra ha ||
देवादिकोंकी पराजय देखकर तथा उनके भयभीत वचन सुनकर शङ्करने अत्यन्त क्रोध प्रकट किया।
Seeing the defeat of the gods and the rest, and hearing their fearful words, Śaṅkara blazed forth in great anger.
दृष्ट्वा पराजयं तेषां (dṛṣṭvā parājayaṃ teṣāṃ) — seeing their defeatदेवादीनां स शङ्करः (devādīnāṃ sa śaṅkaraḥ) — of the gods and the rest, that Śaṅkaraसभयं वचनं श्रुत्वा (sabhayaṃ vacanaṃ śrutvā) — hearing their fearful speechकोपमुच्चैश्चकार ह (kopamuccaiścakāra ha) — blazed forth in great anger
४ निरीक्ष्य स कृपादृष्ट्या देवेभ्यश्चाभयं ददौ । बलं च स्वगणानां वै वर्द्धयामास तेजसा ॥ ४॥
nirīkṣya sa kṛpādṛṣṭyā devebhyaścābhayaṃ dadau | balaṃ ca svagaṇānāṃ vai varddhayāmāsa tejasā ||
कृपादृष्टिसे देखकर उन्होंने देवताओंको अभय प्रदान किया और अपने गणोंके बलको अपने तेजसे बढ़ा दिया।
Looking upon them with a compassionate glance, he granted the gods freedom from fear, and increased the strength of his own gaṇas with his own splendour.
निरीक्ष्य स कृपादृष्ट्या (nirīkṣya sa kṛpādṛṣṭyā) — looking with a compassionate glanceदेवेभ्यश्चाभयं ददौ (devebhyaścābhayaṃ dadau) — he gave the gods freedom from fearबलं च स्वगणानां वै (balaṃ ca svagaṇānāṃ vai) — and the strength of his own gaṇasवर्द्धयामास तेजसा (varddhayāmāsa tejasā) — he increased by his splendour
५ शिवाज्ञप्तस्तदा स्कन्दो दानवानां गणैः सह । युयुधे निर्भयः सङ्ख्ये महावीरो हरात्मजः ॥ ५॥
śivājñaptastadā skando dānavānāṃ gaṇaiḥ saha | yuyudhe nirbhayaḥ saṅkhye mahāvīro harātmajaḥ ||
तब शिवकी आज्ञासे हरपुत्र महावीर स्कन्द दानवोंके गणोंके साथ निर्भय होकर युद्धमें जूझने लगे।
Then, commanded by Śiva, Skanda, the great hero, son of Hara, fought fearlessly in battle against the hosts of the dānavas.

६ कृत्वा क्रोधं वीरशब्दं देवो यस्तारकान्तकः । अक्षौहिणीनां शतकं समरे स जघान ह ॥ ६॥
kṛtvā krodhaṃ vīraśabdaṃ devo yastārakāntakaḥ | akṣauhiṇīnāṃ śatakaṃ samare sa jaghāna ha ||
वीरगर्जनासहित क्रोध प्रकट करके तारकान्तक उस देवने युद्धमें सौ अक्षौहिणी सेनाओंका संहार कर दिया।
Giving vent to his anger with a heroic roar, that god who was the destroyer of Tāraka slew a hundred akṣauhiṇīs in that battle.
कृत्वा क्रोधं वीरशब्दं (kṛtvā krodhaṃ vīraśabdaṃ) — giving vent to anger with a heroic roarदेवो यस्तारकान्तकः (devo yastārakāntakaḥ) — the god who was the ender of Tārakaअक्षौहिणीनां शतकं (akṣauhiṇīnāṃ śatakaṃ) — a hundred akṣauhiṇīsसमरे स जघान ह (samare sa jaghāna ha) — he slew in the battle
७ रुधिरं पातयामास काली कमललोचना । तेषां शिरांसि सञ्छिद्य बभक्ष सहसा च सा ॥ ७॥
rudhiraṃ pātayāmāsa kālī kamalalocanā | teṣāṃ śirāṃsi sañchidya babhakṣa sahasā ca sā ||
कमललोचना कालीने उनका रक्त गिरा दिया और उनके शिरोंको काटकर सहसा उन्हें खा डाला।
Lotus-eyed Kālī made their blood flow; severing their heads, she suddenly devoured them.
रुधिरं पातयामास (rudhiraṃ pātayāmāsa) — she made the blood fallकाली कमललोचना (kālī kamalalocanā) — lotus-eyed Kālīतेषां शिरांसि सञ्छिद्य (teṣāṃ śirāṃsi sañchidya) — severing their headsबभक्ष सहसा च सा (babhakṣa sahasā ca sā) — she suddenly devoured them
८ पपौ रक्तानि तेषां च दानवानां समन्ततः । युद्धं चकार विविधं सुरदानवभीषणम् ॥ ८॥
papau raktāni teṣāṃ ca dānavānāṃ samantataḥ | yuddhaṃ cakāra vividhaṃ suradānavabhīṣaṇam ||
उन दानवोंका रक्त चारों ओर पीकर उसने देव-दानव दोनोंको भयभीत करनेवाला नाना प्रकारका युद्ध किया।
She drank the blood of those dānavas on every side, and waged a battle of many kinds, terrifying to gods and dānavas alike.
पपौ रक्तानि तेषां च (papau raktāni teṣāṃ ca) — she drank their bloodदानवानां समन्ततः (dānavānāṃ samantataḥ) — of the dānavas, on every sideयुद्धं चकार विविधं (yuddhaṃ cakāra vividhaṃ) — she waged battle of many kindsसुरदानवभीषणम् (suradānavabhīṣaṇam) — terrifying to gods and dānavas
९ शतलक्षं गजेन्द्राणां दानवानां तथा रणे । समादायैकहस्तेन मुखे चिक्षेप लीलया ॥ ९॥
śatalakṣaṃ gajendrāṇāṃ dānavānāṃ tathā raṇe | samādāyaikahastena mukhe cikṣepa līlayā ||
रणमें दानवोंके करोड़ों गजेन्द्रोंको उसने एक ही हाथसे पकड़कर लीलापूर्वक अपने मुखमें डाल दिया।
Ten million elephants of the dānavas she seized in battle with a single hand, and flung playfully into her mouth.
शतलक्षं गजेन्द्राणां (śatalakṣaṃ gajendrāṇāṃ) — ten million lordly elephantsदानवानां तथा रणे (dānavānāṃ tathā raṇe) — of the dānavas, in that battleसमादायैकहस्तेन (samādāyaikahastena) — seizing them with a single handमुखे चिक्षेप लीलया (mukhe cikṣepa līlayā) — she flung into her mouth, playfully
१० कबन्धानां सहस्रं च सन्ननर्त रणे बहु । महान् कोलाहलो जातः क्लीबानां च भयङ्करः ॥ १०॥
kabandhānāṃ sahasraṃ ca sannanarta raṇe bahu | mahān kolāhalo jātaḥ klībānāṃ ca bhayaṅkaraḥ ||
सहस्रों कबन्ध रणभूमिमें बहुत नाचने लगे; कायरोंको भयभीत करनेवाला महान् कोलाहल उठ खड़ा हुआ।
A thousand headless trunks danced wildly on the battlefield; a great, terrifying uproar arose among the faint-hearted.

punaḥ skandaḥ prakupyoccaiḥ śaravarṣāṃ cakāra ha | pātayāmāsa kṣaṇataḥ koṭiśo'suranāyakān ||
स्कन्दने पुनः अत्यन्त कुपित होकर बाणोंकी वर्षा की और क्षणभरमें ही करोड़ों असुरनायकोंको गिरा दिया।
Skanda again, greatly enraged, let loose a rain of arrows; in an instant he felled the leaders of the asuras by the crore.

स्कन्दके बाणजालसे शरीर घायल हुए दानव सब भयभीत होकर भाग गये, और शेष बचे हुए मृत्युसे डरने लगे।
The dānavas, their bodies wounded by the net of Skanda's arrows, all fled in fear, the survivors then dreading death.

वृषपर्वा, विप्रचित्ति, दण्ड तथा विकम्पन — ये सब क्रमशः स्कन्दके साथ युद्ध करने लगे।
Vṛṣaparvā, Vipracitti, Daṇḍa, and Vikampana — all of these fought against Skanda, one after another in turn.
वृषपर्वा विप्रचित्तिः (vṛṣaparvā vipracittiḥ) — Vṛṣaparvā, Vipracittiदण्डश्चापि विकम्पनः (daṇḍaścāpi vikampanaḥ) — Daṇḍa, and also Vikampanaस्कन्देन युयुधुः सार्द्धं (skandena yuyudhuḥ sārddhaṃ) — fought together against Skandaतेन सर्वे क्रमेण च (tena sarve krameṇa ca) — all of them, one after another
१४ महामारी च युयुधे न बभूव पराङ्मुखी । बभूवुस्ते क्षताङ्गाश्च स्कन्दशक्तिप्रपीडिताः ॥ १४॥
mahāmārī ca yuyudhe na babhūva parāṅmukhī | babhūvuste kṣatāṅgāśca skandaśaktiprapīḍitāḥ ||
महामारी भी युद्ध करती रहीं और कभी पीठ नहीं दिखायीं; वे (वृषपर्वा आदि) स्कन्दकी शक्तिसे पीड़ित होकर घायल हो गये।
Mahāmārī too fought on and never turned her back; they became wounded in body, afflicted by the power of Skanda.

१५ महामारीस्कन्दयोश्च विजयोऽभूत्तदा मुने । नेदुर्दुन्दुभयः स्वर्गे पुष्पवृष्टिः पपात ह ॥ १५॥
mahāmārīskandayośca vijayo'bhūttadā mune | nedurdundubhayaḥ svarge puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ papāta ha ||
हे मुने! तब महामारी और स्कन्द दोनोंकी विजय हुई; स्वर्गमें दुन्दुभियाँ बज उठीं और पुष्पवृष्टि हुई।
Then, O sage, victory belonged to both Mahāmārī and Skanda; kettledrums sounded in heaven, and a rain of flowers fell.
महामारीस्कन्दयोश्च (mahāmārīskandayośca) — of both Mahāmārī and Skandaविजयोऽभूत्तदा मुने (vijayo'bhūttadā mune) — victory came then, O sageनेदुर्दुन्दुभयः स्वर्गे (nedurdundubhayaḥ svarge) — kettledrums resounded in heavenपुष्पवृष्टिः पपात ह (puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ papāta ha) — a rain of flowers fell
१६ स्कन्दस्य समरं दृष्ट्वा महारौद्रं तमद्भुतम् । दानवानां क्षयकरं यथा प्रकृतिकल्पकम् ॥ १६॥
skandasya samaraṃ dṛṣṭvā mahāraudraṃ tamadbhutam | dānavānāṃ kṣayakaraṃ yathā prakṛtikalpakam ||
स्कन्दके उस महाघोर, अद्भुत तथा दानवोंका क्षय करनेवाले युद्धको प्रकृतिके प्रलयके समान देखकर —
Seeing Skanda's terrible and wondrous battle, destroying the dānavas as though it were the dissolution of primordial nature itself —
स्कन्दस्य समरं दृष्ट्वा (skandasya samaraṃ dṛṣṭvā) — seeing Skanda's battleमहारौद्रं तमद्भुतम् (mahāraudraṃ tamadbhutam) — that terrible and wondrous [battle]दानवानां क्षयकरं (dānavānāṃ kṣayakaraṃ) — destructive of the dānavasयथा प्रकृतिकल्पकम् (yathā prakṛtikalpakam) — as though it were the dissolution of primordial nature
१७ महामारीकृतं तच्चोपद्रवं क्षयहेतुकम् । चुकोपातीव सहसा सनद्धोऽभूत्स्वयं तदा ॥ १७॥
mahāmārīkṛtaṃ taccopadravaṃ kṣayahetukam | cukopātīva sahasā sanaddho'bhūtsvayaṃ tadā ||
तथा महामारीद्वारा किये गये क्षयकारक उपद्रवको देखकर वह अत्यन्त कुपित होकर उसी क्षण स्वयं सन्नद्ध हो गया।
— and the calamity wrought by Mahāmārī, the cause of destruction — he became exceedingly and suddenly enraged, and himself donned his armour then.
महामारीकृतं तत् (mahāmārīkṛtaṃ tat) — that, wrought by Mahāmārīउपद्रवं क्षयहेतुकम् (upadravaṃ kṣayahetukam) — the calamity, cause of destructionचुकोपातीव सहसा (cukopātīva sahasā) — became exceedingly and suddenly enragedसनद्धोऽभूत्स्वयं तदा (sanaddho'bhūtsvayaṃ tadā) — he himself donned his armour then
१८ वरं विमानमारुह्य नानाशस्त्रास्त्रसंयुतम् । अभयं सर्ववीराणां नानारत्नपरिच्छदम् ॥ १८॥
varaṃ vimānamāruhya nānāśastrāstrasaṃyutam | abhayaṃ sarvavīrāṇāṃ nānāratnaparicchadam ||
अनेक शस्त्र-अस्त्रोंसे युक्त, अपने समस्त वीरोंको निर्भय बनानेवाले तथा नाना रत्नोंसे सुसज्जित श्रेष्ठ विमानपर चढ़कर,
Mounting a splendid chariot furnished with manifold weapons and missiles, giving fearlessness to all his heroes, adorned with manifold jewels,
वरं विमानमारुह्य (varaṃ vimānamāruhya) — mounting a splendid chariotनानाशस्त्रास्त्रसंयुतम् (nānāśastrāstrasaṃyutam) — furnished with manifold weapons and missilesअभयं सर्ववीराणां (abhayaṃ sarvavīrāṇāṃ) — giving fearlessness to all his heroesनानारत्नपरिच्छदम् (nānāratnaparicchadam) — adorned with manifold jewels
१९ महावीरैः शङ्खचूडो जगाम रथमध्यतः । धनुर्विकृष्य कर्णान्तं चकार शरवर्षणम् ॥ १९॥
mahāvīraiḥ śaṅkhacūḍo jagāma rathamadhyataḥ | dhanurvikṛṣya karṇāntaṃ cakāra śaravarṣaṇam ||
महावीरोंके साथ शङ्खचूड रथोंके मध्यसे आगे बढ़े और धनुषको कानतक खींचकर बाणोंकी वर्षा करने लगे।
Śaṅkhacūḍa, amid his great heroes, went forth in the midst of his chariot-host; drawing his bow to the ear, he made a rain of arrows.
महावीरैः शङ्खचूडो (mahāvīraiḥ śaṅkhacūḍo) — Śaṅkhacūḍa, together with his great heroesजगाम रथमध्यतः (jagāma rathamadhyataḥ) — went forth from the midst of the chariotsधनुर्विकृष्य कर्णान्तं (dhanurvikṛṣya karṇāntaṃ) — drawing his bow to the earचकार शरवर्षणम् (cakāra śaravarṣaṇam) — made a rain of arrows
२० तस्य सा शरवृष्टिश्च दुर्निवार्या भयङ्करी । महाघोरान्धकारश्च वधस्थाने बभूव ह ॥ २०॥
tasya sā śaravṛṣṭiśca durnivāryā bhayaṅkarī | mahāghorāndhakāraśca vadhasthāne babhūva ha ||
उनकी वह दुर्निवार्य और भयंकर बाणवृष्टि वधस्थलमें महाघोर अन्धकाररूप हो गयी।
That rain of his arrows, irresistible and terrifying, brought a great and dreadful darkness upon the place of slaughter.
तस्य सा शरवृष्टिश्च (tasya sā śaravṛṣṭiśca) — that rain of his arrowsदुर्निवार्या भयङ्करी (durnivāryā bhayaṅkarī) — irresistible and terrifyingमहाघोरान्धकारश्च (mahāghorāndhakāraśca) — a great, dreadful darknessवधस्थाने बभूव ह (vadhasthāne babhūva ha) — arose upon the place of slaughter
२१ देवाः प्रदुद्रुवुः सर्वे येऽन्ये नन्दीश्वरादयः । एक एव कार्त्तिकेयस्तस्थौ समरमूर्द्धनि ॥ २१॥
devāḥ pradudruvuḥ sarve ye'nye nandīśvarādayaḥ | eka eva kārttikeyastasthau samaramūrddhani ||
नन्दीश्वर आदि अन्य सभी देवता भाग गये; केवल कार्त्तिकेय अकेले ही युद्धके अग्रभागमें डटे रहे।
All the other gods fled, beginning with Nandīśvara; Kārttikeya alone stood firm at the forefront of that battle.
देवाः प्रदुद्रुवुः सर्वे (devāḥ pradudruvuḥ sarve) — all the gods fledयेऽन्ये नन्दीश्वरादयः (ye'nye nandīśvarādayaḥ) — the others, beginning with Nandīśvaraएक एव कार्त्तिकेयः (eka eva kārttikeyaḥ) — Kārttikeya aloneतस्थौ समरमूर्द्धनि (tasthau samaramūrddhani) — stood at the forefront of the battle
२२ पर्वतानां च सर्पाणां नागानां शाखिनां तथा । राजा चकार वृष्टिं च दुर्निवार्यां भयङ्करीम् ॥ २२॥
parvatānāṃ ca sarpāṇāṃ nāgānāṃ śākhināṃ tathā | rājā cakāra vṛṣṭiṃ ca durnivāryāṃ bhayaṅkarīm ||
राजा (शङ्खचूड) ने पर्वतों, सर्पों, नागों तथा वृक्षोंकी भी दुर्निवार्य और भयंकर वृष्टि कर दी।
The king made an irresistible and terrifying rain of mountains, serpents, nāgas, and trees alike.
पर्वतानां च सर्पाणां (parvatānāṃ ca sarpāṇāṃ) — of mountains and serpentsनागानां शाखिनां तथा (nāgānāṃ śākhināṃ tathā) — of nāgas, and of trees as wellराजा चकार वृष्टिं च (rājā cakāra vṛṣṭiṃ ca) — the king made a rainदुर्निवार्यां भयङ्करीम् (durnivāryāṃ bhayaṅkarīm) — irresistible and terrifying
२३ तद्दृष्ट्या प्रहतः स्कन्दो बभूव शिवनन्दनः । नीहारेण च सान्द्रेण संवृतो भास्करो यथा ॥ २३॥
taddṛṣṭyā prahataḥ skando babhūva śivanandanaḥ | nīhāreṇa ca sāndreṇa saṃvṛto bhāskaro yathā ||
उस दृश्यसे आहत शिवनन्दन स्कन्द घने कुहरेसे ढके हुए सूर्यके समान आच्छादित हो गये।
Struck by that sight, Skanda, the son of Śiva, was overwhelmed, like the sun covered over by dense mist.
तद्दृष्ट्या प्रहतः स्कन्दो (taddṛṣṭyā prahataḥ skando) — struck by that sight, Skandaबभूव शिवनन्दनः (babhūva śivanandanaḥ) — became, the son of Śivaनीहारेण च सान्द्रेण (nīhāreṇa ca sāndreṇa) — by a dense mistसंवृतो भास्करो यथा (saṃvṛto bhāskaro yathā) — overspread, like the sun
२४ नानाविधां स्वमायां च चकार मयदर्शिताम् । तां नाविदन् सुराः केऽपि गणाश्च मुनिसत्तम ॥ २४॥
nānāvidhāṃ svamāyāṃ ca cakāra mayadarśitām | tāṃ nāvidan surāḥ ke'pi gaṇāśca munisattama ||
उसने अपनी नाना प्रकारकी माया रची, जो मयद्वारा सिखायी गयी थी; हे मुनिश्रेष्ठ! उसे कोई भी देवता या गण नहीं जान सके।
He then wrought his own manifold illusion, taught to him by Maya, which none of the gods or gaṇas, O best of sages, could perceive.
नानाविधां स्वमायां च (nānāvidhāṃ svamāyāṃ ca) — his own manifold illusionचकार मयदर्शिताम् (cakāra mayadarśitām) — wrought, [as] taught by Mayaतां नाविदन् सुराः केऽपि (tāṃ nāvidan surāḥ ke'pi) — none of the gods perceived itगणाश्च मुनिसत्तम (gaṇāśca munisattama) — nor the gaṇas, O best of sages
२५ तदैव शङ्खचूडश्च महामायी महाबलः । शरेणैकेन दिव्येन धनुश्चिच्छेद तस्य वै ॥ २५॥
tadaiva śaṅkhacūḍaśca mahāmāyī mahābalaḥ | śareṇaikena divyena dhanuściccheda tasya vai ||
तभी महामायी महाबली शङ्खचूडने एक ही दिव्य बाणसे उनके (स्कन्दके) धनुषको काट दिया।
Then Śaṅkhacūḍa, mighty and great in magical power, with a single divine arrow cut asunder his [Skanda's] bow.
तदैव शङ्खचूडश्च (tadaiva śaṅkhacūḍaśca) — then Śaṅkhacūḍaमहामायी महाबलः (mahāmāyī mahābalaḥ) — great in magical power, mightyशरेणैकेन दिव्येन (śareṇaikena divyena) — with a single divine arrowधनुश्चिच्छेद तस्य वै (dhanuściccheda tasya vai) — cut his bow asunder
२६ बभञ्ज तद्रथं दिव्यं चिच्छेद रथरक्षकान् । मयूरं जर्जरीभूतं दिव्यास्त्रेण चकार सः ॥ २६॥
babhañja tadrathaṃ divyaṃ ciccheda ratharakṣakān | mayūraṃ jarjarībhūtaṃ divyāstreṇa cakāra saḥ ||
उसने उस दिव्य रथको तोड़ दिया, रथरक्षकोंको काट डाला, तथा दिव्यास्त्रसे मयूरको जर्जर कर दिया।
He shattered that divine chariot, cut down its guards, and with a divine weapon reduced the [banner-]peacock to shreds.
बभञ्ज तद्रथं दिव्यं (babhañja tadrathaṃ divyaṃ) — he shattered that divine chariotचिच्छेद रथरक्षकान् (ciccheda ratharakṣakān) — cut down its guardsमयूरं जर्जरीभूतं (mayūraṃ jarjarībhūtaṃ) — the peacock, reduced to shredsदिव्यास्त्रेण चकार सः (divyāstreṇa cakāra saḥ) — he made [it so] with a divine weapon
२७ शक्तिं चिक्षेप सूर्याभां तस्य वक्षसि घातिनीम् । मूर्च्छामवाप सहसा तत्प्रहारेण स क्षणम् ॥ २७॥
śaktiṃ cikṣepa sūryābhāṃ tasya vakṣasi ghātinīm | mūrcchāmavāpa sahasā tatprahāreṇa sa kṣaṇam ||
उसने सूर्यके समान तेजस्वी घातिनी शक्तिको उनके वक्षपर फेंका; उस प्रहारसे वे क्षणभरके लिये सहसा मूर्च्छित हो गये।
He hurled a sun-bright, deadly spear at his chest; from that blow he suddenly fell into a swoon for a moment.
शक्तिं चिक्षेप सूर्याभां (śaktiṃ cikṣepa sūryābhāṃ) — hurled a sun-bright spearतस्य वक्षसि घातिनीम् (tasya vakṣasi ghātinīm) — the deadly [spear] at his chestमूर्च्छामवाप सहसा (mūrcchāmavāpa sahasā) — he suddenly fell into a swoonतत्प्रहारेण स क्षणम् (tatprahāreṇa sa kṣaṇam) — from that blow, for a moment
२८ पुनश्च चेतनां प्राप्य कार्तिकः परवीरहा । रत्नेन्द्रसारनिर्माणमारुरोह स्ववाहनम् ॥ २८॥
punaśca cetanāṃ prāpya kārtikaḥ paravīrahā | ratnendrasāranirmāṇamāruroha svavāhanam ||
पुनः चेतना पाकर परवीरघाती कार्तिकने रत्नोंसे निर्मित अपने वाहनपर आरोहण किया।
Regaining consciousness once more, Kārtika, the slayer of hostile heroes, mounted his own vehicle, fashioned of the finest gems.
पुनश्च चेतनां प्राप्य (punaśca cetanāṃ prāpya) — regaining consciousness once moreकार्तिकः परवीरहा (kārtikaḥ paravīrahā) — Kārtika, slayer of enemy heroesरत्नेन्द्रसारनिर्माणम् (ratnendrasāranirmāṇam) — fashioned of the finest of gemsआरुरोह स्ववाहनम् (āruroha svavāhanam) — mounted his own vehicle
२९ स्मृत्वा पादौ महेशस्य साम्बिकस्य च षण्मुखः । शस्त्रास्त्राणि गृहीत्वैव चकार रणमुल्बणम् ॥ २९॥
smṛtvā pādau maheśasya sāmbikasya ca ṣaṇmukhaḥ | śastrāstrāṇi gṛhītvaiva cakāra raṇamulbaṇam ||
साम्बिकासहित महेशके चरणोंका स्मरण करके षण्मुखने शस्त्र-अस्त्र ग्रहणकर तीव्र युद्ध किया।
Remembering the feet of Maheśa together with Ambikā, the six-faced one took up his weapons and missiles and waged a fierce battle.
स्मृत्वा पादौ महेशस्य (smṛtvā pādau maheśasya) — remembering the feet of Maheśaसाम्बिकस्य च षण्मुखः (sāmbikasya ca ṣaṇmukhaḥ) — together with Ambikā, the six-faced oneशस्त्रास्त्राणि गृहीत्वैव (śastrāstrāṇi gṛhītvaiva) — taking up his weapons and missilesचकार रणमुल्बणम् (cakāra raṇamulbaṇam) — waged a fierce battle
३० सर्पांश्च पर्वतांश्चैव वृक्षांश्च प्रस्तरांस्तथा । सर्वांश्चिच्छेद कोपेन दिव्यास्त्रेण शिवात्मजः ॥ ३०॥
sarpāṃśca parvatāṃścaiva vṛkṣāṃśca prastarāṃstathā | sarvāṃściccheda kopena divyāstreṇa śivātmajaḥ ||
शिवके पुत्रने क्रोधवश दिव्यास्त्रसे सर्पों, पर्वतों, वृक्षों तथा पत्थरों — सबको काट डाला।
The son of Śiva, in anger, cut to pieces with a divine weapon all the serpents, mountains, trees, and rocks alike.
सर्पांश्च पर्वतांश्चैव (sarpāṃśca parvatāṃścaiva) — serpents and mountainsवृक्षांश्च प्रस्तरांस्तथा (vṛkṣāṃśca prastarāṃstathā) — trees, and rocks likewiseसर्वांश्चिच्छेद कोपेन (sarvāṃściccheda kopena) — cut all of them in angerदिव्यास्त्रेण शिवात्मजः (divyāstreṇa śivātmajaḥ) — with a divine weapon, the son of Śiva
३१ वह्निं निवारयामास पार्जन्येन शरेण ह । रथं धनुश्च चिच्छेद शङ्खचूडस्य लीलया ॥ ३१॥
vahniṃ nivārayāmāsa pārjanyena śareṇa ha | rathaṃ dhanuśca ciccheda śaṅkhacūḍasya līlayā ||
उसने पार्जन्य बाणसे अग्न्यस्त्रका निवारण किया, तथा लीलामात्रसे शङ्खचूडके रथ और धनुषको काट दिया।
He warded off the fire-weapon with the Pārjanya arrow, and with ease cut asunder Śaṅkhacūḍa's chariot and bow.
वह्निं निवारयामास (vahniṃ nivārayāmāsa) — he warded off the fire-weaponपार्जन्येन शरेण ह (pārjanyena śareṇa ha) — with the Pārjanya arrowरथं धनुश्च चिच्छेद (rathaṃ dhanuśca ciccheda) — cut asunder his chariot and bowशङ्खचूडस्य लीलया (śaṅkhacūḍasya līlayā) — of Śaṅkhacūḍa, with ease
३२ सन्नाहं सर्ववाहांश्च किरीटं मुकुटोज्ज्वलम् । वीरशब्दं चकारासौ जगर्ज च पुनः पुनः ॥ ३२॥
sannāhaṃ sarvavāhāṃśca kirīṭaṃ mukuṭojjvalam | vīraśabdaṃ cakārāsau jagarja ca punaḥ punaḥ ||
[उन्होंने] उनके कवच, समस्त वाहन तथा उज्ज्वल मुकुटसहित किरीटको भी काट दिया; तब वह वीरगर्जना करता हुआ बार-बार गरजा।
[He also cut] his armour and all his mounts and his gleaming, crowned diadem; and he [Śaṅkhacūḍa] let out a heroic roar, thundering again and again.
सन्नाहं सर्ववाहांश्च (sannāhaṃ sarvavāhāṃśca) — his armour and all his mountsकिरीटं मुकुटोज्ज्वलम् (kirīṭaṃ mukuṭojjvalam) — his gleaming, crowned diademवीरशब्दं चकारासौ (vīraśabdaṃ cakārāsau) — he let out a heroic roarजगर्ज च पुनः पुनः (jagarja ca punaḥ punaḥ) — and thundered again and again
३३ चिक्षेप शक्तिं सूर्याभां दानवेन्द्रस्य वक्षसि । तत्प्रहारेण सम्प्राप मूर्च्छां दीर्घतमेन च ॥ ३३॥
cikṣepa śaktiṃ sūryābhāṃ dānavendrasya vakṣasi | tatprahāreṇa samprāpa mūrcchāṃ dīrghatamena ca ||
उसने दानवेन्द्रके (शङ्खचूडके) वक्षपर सूर्यके समान शक्ति फेंकी; उस प्रहारसे वह अत्यन्त दीर्घ मूर्च्छाको प्राप्त हो गया।
He [Śaṅkhacūḍa] hurled a sun-bright spear at the chest of the lord of the dānavas [Skanda]; from that blow, he fell into a very long swoon.
चिक्षेप शक्तिं सूर्याभां (cikṣepa śaktiṃ sūryābhāṃ) — hurled a sun-bright spearदानवेन्द्रस्य वक्षसि (dānavendrasya vakṣasi) — at the chest of the lord of dānavasतत्प्रहारेण सम्प्राप (tatprahāreṇa samprāpa) — from that blow, attainedमूर्च्छां दीर्घतमेन च (mūrcchāṃ dīrghatamena ca) — a very lengthy swoon
३४ मुहूर्तमात्रं तत्क्लेशं विनीय स महाबलः । चेतनां प्राप्य चोत्तस्थौ जगर्ज हरिवर्चसः ॥ ३४॥
muhūrtamātraṃ tatkleśaṃ vinīya sa mahābalaḥ | cetanāṃ prāpya cottasthau jagarja harivarcasaḥ ||
उस कष्टको मुहूर्तभरमें ही दूर करके वह महाबली चेतना पाकर उठ खड़ा हुआ और हरिके समान तेजस्वी होकर गरजा।
Overcoming that distress in but a short while, the mighty one, regaining consciousness, rose up and roared, radiant as Hari.
मुहूर्तमात्रं तत्क्लेशं (muhūrtamātraṃ tatkleśaṃ) — that distress, for a mere momentविनीय स महाबलः (vinīya sa mahābalaḥ) — overcoming it, that mighty oneचेतनां प्राप्य चोत्तस्थौ (cetanāṃ prāpya cottasthau) — regaining consciousness, rose upजगर्ज हरिवर्चसः (jagarja harivarcasaḥ) — roared, radiant as Hari
३५ शक्त्या जघान तं चापि कार्तिकेयं महाबलम् । स पपात महीपृष्ठेऽमोघां कुर्वन् विधिप्रदाम् ॥ ३५॥
śaktyā jaghāna taṃ cāpi kārtikeyaṃ mahābalam | sa papāta mahīpṛṣṭhe'moghāṃ kurvan vidhipradām ||
उसने महाबली कार्तिकेयको भी अमोघ, विधिप्रदत्त शक्तिसे मारा; तब वे पृथ्वीतलपर गिर पड़े।
He then struck the mighty Kārtikeya too with a spear — unfailing, granted by fate — and he [Kārtikeya] fell upon the surface of the earth.
शक्त्या जघान तं चापि (śaktyā jaghāna taṃ cāpi) — struck him too, with a spearकार्तिकेयं महाबलम् (kārtikeyaṃ mahābalam) — the mighty Kārtikeyaस पपात महीपृष्ठे (sa papāta mahīpṛṣṭhe) — he fell upon the surface of the earthअमोघां कुर्वन् विधिप्रदाम् (amoghāṃ kurvan vidhipradām) — making it unfailing, granted by fate
३६ काली गृहीत्वा तं क्रोडे निनाय शिवसन्निधौ । ज्ञानेन तं शिवश्चापि जीवयामास लीलया ॥ ३६॥
kālī gṛhītvā taṃ kroḍe nināya śivasannidhau | jñānena taṃ śivaścāpi jīvayāmāsa līlayā ||
कालीने उन्हें अपनी गोदमें लेकर शिवके समीप पहुँचाया; शिवने भी अपने ज्ञानसे लीलापूर्वक उन्हें जीवित कर दिया।
Kālī, taking him into her lap, carried him into Śiva's presence; and Śiva, by his [divine] knowledge, easily brought him back to life.
काली गृहीत्वा तं क्रोडे (kālī gṛhītvā taṃ kroḍe) — Kālī, taking him into her lapनिनाय शिवसन्निधौ (nināya śivasannidhau) — carried him into Śiva's presenceज्ञानेन तं शिवश्चापि (jñānena taṃ śivaścāpi) — and Śiva too, by his knowledgeजीवयामास लीलया (jīvayāmāsa līlayā) — brought him back to life with ease
३७ ददौ बलमनन्तं च समुत्तस्थौ प्रतापवान् । गमनाय मतिं चक्रे पुनस्तत्र शिवात्मजः ॥ ३७॥
dadau balamanantaṃ ca samuttasthau pratāpavān | gamanāya matiṃ cakre punastatra śivātmajaḥ ||
उन्होंने अनन्त बल प्रदान किया; प्रतापवान् स्कन्द उठ खड़े हुए और शिवनन्दनने पुनः वहाँ जानेका विचार किया।
He [Śiva] gave him boundless strength; the glorious one rose up, and Śiva's son resolved once more to go forth to that place.
ददौ बलमनन्तं च (dadau balamanantaṃ ca) — he gave him boundless strengthसमुत्तस्थौ प्रतापवान् (samuttasthau pratāpavān) — the glorious one rose upगमनाय मतिं चक्रे (gamanāya matiṃ cakre) — he resolved to go forthपुनस्तत्र शिवात्मजः (punastatra śivātmajaḥ) — once more there, Śiva's son
३८ एतस्मिन्नन्तरे वीरो वीरभद्रो महाबलः । शङ्खचूडेन युयुधे समरे बलशालिना ॥ ३८॥
etasminnantare vīro vīrabhadro mahābalaḥ | śaṅkhacūḍena yuyudhe samare balaśālinā ||
इसी बीच महाबली वीर वीरभद्रने रणमें बलशाली शङ्खचूडके साथ युद्ध किया।
Meanwhile the mighty hero Vīrabhadra fought in battle against the powerful Śaṅkhacūḍa.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे वीरो (etasminnantare vīro) — meanwhile, the heroवीरभद्रो महाबलः (vīrabhadro mahābalaḥ) — Vīrabhadra, of great mightशङ्खचूडेन युयुधे (śaṅkhacūḍena yuyudhe) — fought against Śaṅkhacūḍaसमरे बलशालिना (samare balaśālinā) — in battle, [against him,] the powerful one
३९ ववर्ष समरेऽस्त्राणि यानि यानि च दानवः । चिच्छेद लीलया वीरस्तानि तानि निजैः शरैः ॥ ३९॥
vavarṣa samare'strāṇi yāni yāni ca dānavaḥ | ciccheda līlayā vīrastāni tāni nijaiḥ śaraiḥ ||
युद्धमें दानवने जो-जो अस्त्र बरसाये, वीरने अपने बाणोंसे लीलामात्रमें उन सबको काट डाला।
Whatever weapons the dānava rained down in that battle, the hero effortlessly cut down each of them with his own arrows.
ववर्ष समरेऽस्त्राणि (vavarṣa samare'strāṇi) — rained weapons down in battleयानि यानि च दानवः (yāni yāni ca dānavaḥ) — whatever the dānava [loosed]चिच्छेद लीलया वीरः (ciccheda līlayā vīraḥ) — the hero cut them, with easeतानि तानि निजैः शरैः (tāni tāni nijaiḥ śaraiḥ) — each of them, with his own arrows
४० दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि शतशो मुमुचे दानवेश्वरः । तानि चिच्छेद तं बाणैर्वीरभद्रः प्रतापवान् ॥ ४०॥
divyānyastrāṇi śataśo mumuce dānaveśvaraḥ | tāni ciccheda taṃ bāṇairvīrabhadraḥ pratāpavān ||
दानवेश्वरने सैकड़ों दिव्यास्त्र छोड़े; प्रतापवान् वीरभद्रने उन सबको अपने बाणोंसे काट डाला।
The lord of the dānavas released hundreds of divine weapons; the glorious Vīrabhadra cut them all down with his arrows.
दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि शतशो (divyānyastrāṇi śataśo) — divine weapons, by the hundredsमुमुचे दानवेश्वरः (mumuce dānaveśvaraḥ) — the lord of the dānavas releasedतानि चिच्छेद तं बाणैः (tāni ciccheda taṃ bāṇaiḥ) — cut them down with arrowsवीरभद्रः प्रतापवान् (vīrabhadraḥ pratāpavān) — the glorious Vīrabhadra
४१ अथातीव चुकोपोच्चैः शङ्खचूडः प्रतापवान् । शक्त्या जघानोरसि तं स चकम्पे पपात कौ ॥ ४१॥
athātīva cukopoccaiḥ śaṅkhacūḍaḥ pratāpavān | śaktyā jaghānorasi taṃ sa cakampe papāta kau ||
तब अत्यन्त कुपित प्रतापवान् शङ्खचूडने उनके वक्षपर शक्तिसे प्रहार किया; वे काँप उठे और भूमिपर गिर पड़े।
Then the glorious Śaṅkhacūḍa, exceedingly enraged, struck him on the chest with a spear; he trembled and fell to the ground.
अथातीव चुकोपोच्चैः (athātīva cukopoccaiḥ) — then, exceedingly enragedशङ्खचूडः प्रतापवान् (śaṅkhacūḍaḥ pratāpavān) — the glorious Śaṅkhacūḍaशक्त्या जघानोरसि तं (śaktyā jaghānorasi taṃ) — struck him on the chest with a spearस चकम्पे पपात कौ (sa cakampe papāta kau) — he trembled and fell to the ground
४२ क्षणेन चेतनां प्राप्य समुत्तस्थौ गणेश्वरः । जग्राह च धनुर्भूयो वीरभद्रो गणाग्रणीः ॥ ४२॥
kṣaṇena cetanāṃ prāpya samuttasthau gaṇeśvaraḥ | jagrāha ca dhanurbhūyo vīrabhadro gaṇāgraṇīḥ ||
क्षणभरमें ही चेतना पाकर गणेश्वर पुनः उठ खड़े हुए; गणाग्रणी वीरभद्रने फिरसे धनुष ग्रहण किया।
Regaining consciousness in a moment, the lord of the gaṇas rose up again; Vīrabhadra, foremost of the gaṇas, took up his bow once more.
क्षणेन चेतनां प्राप्य (kṣaṇena cetanāṃ prāpya) — regaining consciousness in a momentसमुत्तस्थौ गणेश्वरः (samuttasthau gaṇeśvaraḥ) — the lord of the gaṇas rose upजग्राह च धनुर्भूयो (jagrāha ca dhanurbhūyo) — took up his bow once moreवीरभद्रो गणाग्रणीः (vīrabhadro gaṇāgraṇīḥ) — Vīrabhadra, foremost of the gaṇas
४३ एतस्मिन्नन्तरे काली जगाम समरं पुनः । भक्षितुं दानवान् स्वांश्च रक्षितुं कार्तिकेच्छया ॥ ४३॥
etasminnantare kālī jagāma samaraṃ punaḥ | bhakṣituṃ dānavān svāṃśca rakṣituṃ kārtikecchayā ||
इसी बीच काली दानवोंको खानेके लिये तथा अपने पक्षकी रक्षाके लिये कार्तिकेयकी इच्छासे पुनः युद्धमें गयीं।
Meanwhile Kālī went again into battle, to devour the dānavas and to protect her own, at Kārtikeya's wish.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे काली (etasminnantare kālī) — meanwhile Kālīजगाम समरं पुनः (jagāma samaraṃ punaḥ) — went again into battleभक्षितुं दानवान् स्वांश्च (bhakṣituṃ dānavān svāṃśca) — to devour the dānavas, and her own [side]रक्षितुं कार्तिकेच्छया (rakṣituṃ kārtikecchayā) — to protect, at Kārtikeya's wish
४४ वीरास्तामनुजग्मुश्च ते च नन्दीश्वरादयः । सर्वे देवाश्च गन्धर्वा यक्षा रक्षांसि पन्नगाः ॥ ४४॥
vīrāstāmanujagmuśca te ca nandīśvarādayaḥ | sarve devāśca gandharvā yakṣā rakṣāṃsi pannagāḥ ||
वीरगण उनके पीछे-पीछे चले, नन्दीश्वर आदिसहित; सभी देवता, गन्धर्व, यक्ष, राक्षस तथा नाग भी साथ गये।
The heroes followed after her, together with Nandīśvara and the others; all the gods, gandharvas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, and serpents as well.
वीरास्तामनुजग्मुश्च (vīrāstāmanujagmuśca) — the heroes followed after herते च नन्दीश्वरादयः (te ca nandīśvarādayaḥ) — together with Nandīśvara and the othersसर्वे देवाश्च गन्धर्वाः (sarve devāśca gandharvāḥ) — all the gods and gandharvasयक्षा रक्षांसि पन्नगाः (yakṣā rakṣāṃsi pannagāḥ) — yakṣas, rākṣasas, and serpents
४५ मद्यभाण्डाश्च बहुशः शतशो वाद्यवाहकाः । पुनः समुद्यताश्चासन् वीरा उभयतोऽखिलाः ॥ ४५॥
madyabhāṇḍāśca bahuśaḥ śataśo vādyavāhakāḥ | punaḥ samudyatāścāsan vīrā ubhayato'khilāḥ ||
अनेक मद्यपात्र तथा सैकड़ों वाद्यवाहक भी साथ चले; फिर दोनों ओरके समस्त वीर पुनः युद्धके लिये उद्यत हो गये।
Vessels of wine in abundance, and hundreds of bearers of musical instruments — once again all the warriors on both sides stood ready.
मद्यभाण्डाश्च बहुशः (madyabhāṇḍāśca bahuśaḥ) — vessels of wine, in abundanceशतशो वाद्यवाहकाः (śataśo vādyavāhakāḥ) — hundreds of bearers of instrumentsपुनः समुद्यताश्चासन् (punaḥ samudyatāścāsan) — once more stood readyवीरा उभयतोऽखिलाः (vīrā ubhayato'khilāḥ) — all the warriors, on both sides
इति श्रीशिवमहापुराणे द्वितीयायां रुद्रसंहितायां पञ्चमे युद्धखण्डे शङ्खचूडवधे ससैन्यशङ्खचूडयुद्धवर्णनं नाम सप्तत्रिंशोऽध्यायः॥ ३७॥
Thus ends the thirty-seventh chapter, called "The Battle with Śaṅkhacūḍa's Full Army," within the Śaṅkhacūḍa-vadha sub-narrative, in the Yuddha-khaṇḍa — the fifth section of the second Rudra-saṃhitā, in the glorious Śiva Mahāpurāṇa.
॥ इस प्रकार श्रीशिवमहापुराणके अन्तर्गत द्वितीय रुद्रसंहिताके पञ्चम युद्धखण्डमें शङ्खचूडवधके अन्तर्गत ससैन्यशङ्खचूडयुद्धवर्णन नामक सैंतीसवाँ अध्याय पूर्ण हुआ॥ ३७॥
